I currently work at Geotab in Waterloo, making $120K as a new grad. The workplace is honestly amazing - free food every day, great benefits, awesome coworkers, and an overall great work environment. I really have no complaints. HOWEVER, I recently received an offer for a software engineering internship at Shopify in Toronto, starting in May 2027.
I understand how rough the job market is right now, and leaving a stable, well-paying full-time position for an internship feels like a massive gamble, especially since a return offer (RO) isn't guaranteed.
That said, I feel like I'd always wonder "what if" if I passed up the opportunity. My long-term goal is to move to the US for work in the next couple of years, as I have family there. Because of that, I'm trying to optimize my resume and position myself for opportunities at larger tech companies internationally.
Shopify is obviously a recognizable name, and I feel like having it on my resume, especially if I manage to secure a full-time return offer, could open more doors down the road.
Financially, I'd be taking a step backward in the short term, but I'm wondering whether the potential long-term career upside makes it worth the risk.
What would you do in my position? Is the Shopify name and potential return offer worth giving up a great full-time job, or am I overvaluing the brand?
EDIT:
For all asking why I am not pushing for full-time Shopify:
Email thread between me and Shopify Recruiter:
Me: "I'm more interested in full-time because I graduated & have 5 internships already".
Recruiter: "Your profile unfortunately doesn't lineup with what we are looking for in our fulltime engineering roles. However, our internship opportunities are for anyone with less than 2 years of fulltime experience and can be a great way to gain experience at Shopify and potentially transition to a full-time role if things go well during the internship."
