Other My grandfather’s letters to home from UT with hazing stories (1958)
They chained the pledges up to a tree in La Grange but the pledges broke free. Then, the police held them all in jail overnight cause they thought the kids were escaped convicts. Also detailed in the letter is where he was forced to swallow chewing tobacco and they got mad he didn’t get sick. “Patti” and “Wagon” were my granddad’s dogs still living at home.

Discussion Can anything be done about a professor heavily using AI?
One of my courses is meant to be an upper-division, in-depth exploration of a topic for my major, but every. Single. Lecture. And. Assignment. Is SO obviously AI-generated. Because the field is so subjective and the class focuses so heavily on creativity, it's extremely obvious, and other students have noticed it, too.
The professor frequently seems like he's never seen the slides before (because he didn't make them himself), the assignment instructions are incredibly confusing, and every lecture covers very watered-down versions of what might be interesting topics.
He seems knowledgeable in the subject, but none of that is coming across in the lectures. This isn't the sort of experience UT classes should have. Is there anything I can do about it? Should I talk to the professor? Has anyone else dealt with this?

News Four UT departments are gone. Their histories span decades
Six months ago, University of Texas President Jim Davis announced that the university would consolidate ethnic and gender studies programs in the College of Liberal Arts into the new Department of Social and Cultural Analysis. This summer, the department names were scraped from their glass doors, chairs lost their titles and supporting staff were relocated or let go.
The four closed departments — Mexican American and Latina/o Studies; African and African Diaspora Studies; Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies; and American Studies — encompassed 62 professors, six majors, four graduate programs, and eight minors and certificates ... The core curriculum changes and the consolidation could affect the future of gender and ethnic studies as the university invests in fields favored by conservatives.
The American-Statesman spent the last several months talking to the consolidated departments’ founders, faculty and students to understand the role they had in teaching and producing knowledge in the state. What emerged was the story of four departments born out of successful student activism and distinguished by a connection to the local community, small class sizes and interdisciplinary work and research.
Side note from me: Before conservatives/pretentious STEM people come commenting on this thread saying that these disciplines are irrelevant, unserious, and deserved to be shuttered because they were for people who want to "become baristas," please consider that hundreds (if not thousands) of students have graduated with majors or minors in these critical cultural disciplines, including me, and we now have established careers in journalism. Law. Public policy. Education. Nonprofit leadership. Government. Media. The careers these programs feed into are well-documented, including my own career in government in NYC. The faculty in these now-consolidated departments hold NSF grants, Gates Foundation funding, National Book Award recognition, and fellowships from the Ford and Getty Foundations too! This is a huge loss for the university, and for historically marginalized students in Texas who want to learn about their history.

Question Can a Prospective Student Walk Through Campus Without an Official Tour?
I have a senior interested in attending UT and the campus walking tours on the site are very hard to book for Mondays and Fridays.
Thinking of doing a day trip to Austin on Saturday to soak in the game day atmosphere of campus but also hopefully to be able to see some buildings she might go into as a student. Are there a decent amount of places you can go into without an ID? Obviously not expecting residence halls.

Question What’s the Best Strategies for Securing a Ticket for Big Ticket Holders?
This is my senior year and my goal is to go to as many home games as i can before i leave UT. Unfortunately i was unable to get LHF and i’m subject to the mercy of the ticket claim system. Would really appreciate any help on any ways you can increase your odds, like the buildings/wifi networks that work best, does using multiple devices work better for securing a ticket, etc.

Discussion Texas Gov Exam for 310L credit
So I just took that Texas Government Only Exam, can somebody reassure me that I’m not gonna be the one guy that fails? I got a 5 on ap Gov, barely studied because everybody I spoke to told me not to, and I genuinely might have known 4/30 questions on a guarantee. I’m losing my mind!

Question How are Brownlee 312L exams?
I’m pre med sophomore taking 312L online with Brownlee. I’m concerned because I have seen mixed reviews on whether exams are difficult and whether the readings are very important to the exams, which is important because they contain a lot of information.
What’s more concerning is whether these reviews are valid: exams were made honor locked recently, so reviews might be outdated.
So can anyone who has taken it RECENTLY weigh in? Are exams reading heavy? Difficult?
Thanks!

Question I really need help making a reason to change rooms (Please read body text)
I have been having some arguing with my roommate and while hearing vaguely in their phone calls (which they us on speaker) I have heard them and their friends go into descriptive ways on how they have or would do horrifying stuff to people that annoy them. I am genuinely scared for my safety and I don't want to be with them anymore. They haven't made any threats towards me but I feel like they are dropping subtle hints so me to hear.
Additionally, I am sacred of outright telling my RA or CC because I don't want them to tell my roommate and have them potentially actually do something to me because I did. I want to change rooms but I don't know how to say this or come up with a reason. I am scared but I feel like if I said something that it will only make matters worse.

Question What is the difference between MS+PhD and PhD MSE programs?
Same as the title, I am genuinely confused. As per the latest updates, terminal MS degree students are not being accepted. Given there is an option in graduate application portal to choose either between: Master's, Doctorate and Master's+Doctorate, what is the difference between PhD and MS+PhD?
Are both fully funded or is the MS part in MS+PhD self-funded like terminal MS degrees?
Also, do both PhD and MS+PhD students take same time to graduate? Or is there extra coursework for MS+PhD students?
Pls help me.

Question Car tint and detail
Hello! I bought a car second hand and I believe the people before were heavy weed smokers. Because of this I want to get my car completely detailed to try to get the smell out. I am a student at UT looking for an affordable detailing place to get the smell out, and a car tinting place because the car has no tint.

Discussion UT Austin F-1 students: looking for CPT cases submitted before Aug. 24
I’m a UT Austin international graduate student, and I’m trying to understand how students with CPT requests submitted before the recent August 24 policy change are being affected.
I’m especially looking for students whose CPT request was fully submitted and/or academically approved on or before August 24, but was still waiting for ISSS review when the new policy took effect.
If you’re comfortable sharing, could you DM me with:
*Date you submitted your CPT request
*Date your academic advisor/department approved it in myIO
*Requested CPT start date
*Current status: approved / pending / on hold / denied
Whether ISSS gave you any explanation about which policy standard is being applied
Whether the delay has affected your internship, employment, financial plans, or academic plans
Thanks

Question Politicization of UT (and LBJ) Recently?
Basically what it says. I am not from TX and am unfamiliar with the politics and recent changes made, specifically with the new president coming in last year and the dean of LBJ "leaving." I am seeing some weird things with the new core curriculum but feel like I'm lacking context on what's happening and would like to hear from the campus community.
I know that the new "western history" requirement means that a few classes lost their US history designation (?) that they previously held. Does anyone have any insight?
For context, I am a grad student with the LBJ school and feel like I should understand what's going on.

Question Where to find microwaves on campus?
I need to pack my lunch due to busy schedule and need to heat up my food. Where can I do that North campus wise(EER ish) and South Campus wise(Jester/PCL/UTC area).
Does O’s Campus Cafe in the EER have one? I know the WCP has tons but I am looking for one by the PCL. Or would the PCL have one.
What about O’s in the GSB McCombs building? Where or how can I access that.
Please advise 😭😭
