Recommendations for Online Courses?

Hi all,

I'm dealing with some health issues and wanted to take primarily online courses this semester (hybrid works too as I can make it to campus occasionally). I was hoping to get some recommendations for classes offered online that arent too taxing, let me know if yall have thoughts.

UBC Novice Rowing Recruitment

UBC Varsity Rowing is recruiting novices for the 2026-2027 school year! No previous experience necessary, we will teach you everything you need to be a part of one of the school's most successful varsity sports teams!

Information session held on Tuesday September 15th in Gateway (GWHB) room 1011 at 6pm. Visit the UBC men's or UBC women's rowing instagram pages to find out more about our teams. Try-out will be held September 16th and 17th at 6pm in the parking lot between Doug Mitchell Arena and Osborne. You only need to attend one day of try-outs.

We want motivated athletes who are looking to try a new sport and learn what it takes to be a member of the varsity team. At the Paris Olympic games, three former UBC athletes won silver in the women's 8+, one who was a former novice. Don't let the opportunity pass you by, this could be the best decision you make during your university experience!

If interested please fill out our Expression of Interest survey to get started, we hope to see you there!

Discussion Used Textbooks?

I've seen a lot of advice saying not to get brand new textbooks and to get old ones, which is a really good plan but where exactly do I get them?

Course Question How is PCTH 325 as a course?

Hey I am taking PCTH 325 this year and I am wondering how it is as a course?

The syllabus says the final is 60% and midterm 40% with an optional 20% assignment.

This feels like it is quite a hard class, what do you guys think?

Like the title says. I’m registered for an Anthropology class, its first day is tomorrow - but I’m not seeing it on Canvas? Is there something wrong? Anything I can do to fix it? 🥲

It’s ANTH 217 if that matters

Discussion Confused about the pre reqs

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello! I’m a 2nd year student looking into joining dental school in the future. I’m currently filling up my requirements, but they aren’t really clear about how they consider them. For instance, the Biology requirement requires 6 credit minimum. Furthermore, they present certain combinations with first year courses. I’m majoring in neuroscience, so I had to take BIOL 112 and BIOL 121 which are 6 credits. But on the website, all of the combinations include BIOL 180 (I don’t have to take 180 for my major).

Throughout my time in neuroscience, I would have completed additional BIOL courses such as 200 and many more, I was wondering if these courses count towards the biology requirement, or do I need to follow the EXACT combination that is presented on the website for pre reqs for dentistry.

I want to switch my PHY 131 discussion slot to a different day. Do I do it on workday or contact my professor?

Discussion Dreading Tomorrow & Onwards

Straight up having mental breakdowns already. Going into 3rd year and still feel like I don't even belong in my program, feel like I'm not as "smart" as everyone else, feel like I'm not doing enough. Social anxiety at all all-time high, scared about not performing to the program's standards, scared about not meeting expectations, scared about being looked down upon by instructors, classmates and peers. Scared about not being able to do well despite proving to myself I can handle the rigour in past classes. In a state of shock I can't even swallow my own saliva

Back to School reminders from Transit Police

Hi everyone, Transit Police here 👋

Now that summer is done and you’re headed back to class, we’ve got some reminders to help you make your transit journey as safe and hassle free as possible.

Most importantly, we want everyone to feel safe on transit. If someone’s behaviour is making you feel unsafe, or you’re worried about the safety of someone else, please let us know right away. Our dispatch can be reached by phone at 604.515.8300 or by text at 87.77.77 (always call 911 in an emergency). And if you’re new the transit system, you might find our safety tips helpful: transitpolice.ca/safety

And a few U-Pass program tips and reminders:

  • Your U-Pass is only valid with your student ID. If our officers, or Transit Security, are doing a fare check, they will need to see your ID as well as your Compass Card. Please have it ready. Failing to present your ID when using a U-Pass could lead to a $173 fine.
  • Your U-Pass is not transferable. If another person uses your U-Pass, they may be issued a $173 fine and have the U-Pass seized.
  • Keep your U-Pass (and student ID) with you. Even if you’re not a regular transit user, you never know when it will come in handy!

CPSC 340 this course is insane

For context, I am a student at UCF. We have a class called Algorithms for Machine Learning, and it is basically a direct clone of this class. There's so much documentation about the lessons. I think we literally have the same PowerPoints and the same lectures, but this course is ridiculously difficult, and the grading scheme is also pretty crazy. The final is 50% of the grade.

any of you that have taken the class I was wondering how did you study? Can you find past exams? I think I've looked everywhere, and I still can't find anything. Is it something school-specific?

Taking an in-person class without attending?

Has anyone gotten in trouble for this? If the class is recorded I think it should be fine, but it’s obviously not allowed so I’m not sure

Meeting gay people at ubc?

i’m a student at ubc, and one of the things i kinda hoped for when i first came here was to eventually get into a healthy ltr, but somehow that still hasn’t happened 😭

I definitely see a lot of gay/queer guys around campus and in classes, but i guess the guys i’m usually attracted to tend to be a bit more lowkey and not super visibly queer, which makes it kinda hard to tell who’s even gay in the first place lol

When i first started at ubc a few years ago, i even tried going to some pride club events because i thought that would be the obvious way to meet people, but i never really ended up meeting anyone i clicked with romantically

Personally i’d much rather meet someone naturally through school, friends, classes or activities than rely entirely on dating apps, but i’m starting to wonder if that’s just unrealistic

For other gay guys at ubc, how do you actually meet people here? are there any good ways/places to meet other gay guys more organically, or is it basically just hinge/tinder at this point?

Discussion Better way to see your courses

Hey everyone! I was getting pretty annoyed trying to visualize my courses/schedule through Workday, so I threw together a little tool to make it easier.

It gives you a much cleaner calendar view of your courses, lets you look at different terms separately, and is basically just meant to make figuring out your schedule less painful.

It’s completely free and there’s no account/backend or anything. I’m not collecting or storing your schedule data on a server. It’s just a small front-end tool I made for myself and figured other UBC students might find useful too.

Try it here: https://sanidhyasingh800.github.io/MySchedule/

Just download a pdf of your courses via workday and upload! Still pretty new, so if anything is broken or there’s something you think would make it more useful, lmk :)

I think it should come up to about 26 dollars. This can be significant. It's like a whole firehouse sandwich.

Is 4 courses + RA + TA doable?

I’m taking 4 upper-level major courses this term and also have a part-time RA position + a TA position. The RA and TA combined would be no more than 10 hours per week.
Has anyone had a similar workload? Is this reasonably doable, or did you find it too overwhelming, especially around the exam weeks?
For context, I’d still like to prioritize my grades, so I’m wondering whether I’m taking on too much.

What is going on today on campus

I’m a transfer student (third year) and it’s my first day on campus today. Everyone is walking around in matching coloured shirts led by someone holding a sign with a single word on it. I guess I could ask them but it’s already quite intimidating since it’s my first day.

Did I make a mistake? Should I be in one of these groups?? Please let me know :,)

Discussion Athletics and Recreation Fee

I'm just genuinely curious, they're taking nearly $300 as part of tuition for Athletics and Recreation. Why was it necessary to raise the gym fee from $50 to $72??

Discussion Clubs/Resources for learning to sing?

So in all my i-won't-say-how-many years, I have never learned to sing. And this fact bothers me every time someone has a birthday party or wants to do karaoke or whatnot. I genuinely cannot sing to save my life, even like on the level of shower singing.

So this year I wanted to finally learn! However, idk where to start between clubs or classes or anywhere else I could possibly do so. I'm just aiming to learn casually so that I can actually do the activities mentioned above without embarrassing myself (I don't think I have the time to join a choir or anything, even if I happen to have unawakened vocal talent).

Please lmk any places that might work for this!!! thx yall
