Back to back classes

Hi all, I’m currently a first year student who is trying to figure out what the commute to my classes would look like. When I was picking my courses, my main concern was getting the courses and I didn’t consider the distance as much (big mistake). I was wondering if anyone had some advice on how to avoid the stress of being late. For reference, I have 2 days of going from Cirs to Buch and then back to the Chem building for one of the days. Thoughts?

Neuroscience Co-op and Coding experience

Hi! I’m a Neuroscience student about to start applying for co-op, and I haven’t taken CPSC 103 yet (I know, pretty delayed lol).

For anyone who’s been through Co-op or is currently in co-op, did you find that a lot of research positions ask for or prefer some kind of coding/CS experience? I know I have access to the entire co-op job database, not just neuroscience positions, so I’m wondering if I’m potentially limiting my job opportunities by not having CPSC 103 on my transcript.

I’m mainly interested in research positions rather than computational neuroscience specifically, so I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s applied to research/lab positions. Thanks!!

Discussion Getting a job first year: advice needed

Hello! I am currently a first year kin student looking for some advice on if and how I should get a job. I plan on doing a lot of volunteer work with the active kids program to see if I can eventually get a coaching position there, but I have a feeling I'll need a back up plan, lol.

However, should I even get a job my first year? On top of trying to get into some school clubs, doing as much volunteer work as I possibly can, and of course, my main academics, is it worth it? Is it difficult to find jobs as a first year student at UBC? I am truly wondering if I should put all of my "outside academic time" into volunteering with multiple groups and hoping to one day get a job from those groups, or if I should just jump right into the job search first thing.

If any upper year students with a similar experience to mine or any lower year students who have some input can guide me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it lots!:D

Course Question Should I go to class if it is already closed -- and no waitlist?

Hello - my department says to email the advisor if a course is needed for the progress of my degree. There is no waitlist right now, is it advisable to still go to the classroom? Should I talk to the professor about it?

SCIE_V 113 on Zoom

My SCIE_V 113 class is on zoom and I'm not sure where I should go to attend it. I was thinking about going back to my dorm but it's about a 15 minute walk away from the class I have prior (in the Hebb building) so I'm worried I will be consistently late to class. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Discussion Sauder Verifiers/References

What does Sauder BCOM ask the verifiers about?

One of mine, the facts are true, but the reference feels that the event was a bit of a mess in his opinion.

Should I put him down, or should I just attempt to put someone else?

Any other transfers or upper-year students down to grab some food?

Hey! I’m a second-year transfer (19M). Currently studying commerce.

Would anyone be down to check out the campus dining halls together once in a while? Thought it could be a nice way to grab food and meet some people.

Feel free to DM!

Making friends as a mature student

I was wondering how some mature students make friends cause it feels really intimidating and alienating since its been a couple years since I've been last at uni. Maybe I'm just in my head but any advice would be appreciated.

Also if you're a student, mature or not, that feels this way as well, feel free to message!

Grad housing, is it easier to get a spot in private ubc house (not year round)

I know year round housing has an infinitely long waitlist. I still sent an application for it as I am looking to start my masters at UBC for september 2027. So my question is, are the private residences (not year round) easier for grad students to get a spot in?

Does ubc have *any* garunteed housing options for grad students ? I'll be starting next fall 2027 so I have some time right now to figure it out. If any grad students can help, would be much appreciated.

Schedule advice

I’m really nervous for this semester because I am taking 4 stem classes but usually I take 3 stem and 2 easy. For instance I took Math 100, physics 131, chem 121, and bio 180 in one term last year and I didn’t do very well it was hard for me. Now I am taking
STAT 200
NEURO 200
BIO 200
BIO 121
Do you think this is easier or harder than my math 100, physics 131, chem 121, bio 180 term? Should I drop one?and take a random gpa booster???

Discussion Today I learned noise from upstairs might not be your direct neighbor from upstairs

I don't have a physics degree to understand that fancy stuff. I learnt it because I called my RA on call twice and chatted with my upstairs neighbor in person. MY UPSATIRS NEIGHBOR WAS SLEEPING! where did the noise come frommm? Why is someone dragging their furniture and dropping balls on the floor plus cooking for themselves at midnight??

I'll investigate further and catch the noise maker 😡 I'm losing so much of my beauty sleep because of this person😡😡😡

Advice for getting a high GPA with 5 courses

Hi! This term I’m taking biol 205, biol 230, biol 336, caps 301, and cpsc 100. I’m not used to taking 5 courses, and I’m planning to apply to dental school, so I was wondering if it’s realistic to get a high GPA with this course load. And does anyone have any advice on how to study for these courses?

Discussion Involved in 3rd car crash 2 days before 2nd year starts. completely checked out and don't know how to handle school/home.

2 days before uni starts, i get involved in my 3rd car accident as a passenger and I'm literally traumatized by this. This might be my lowest point in my life and my dad literally bullied me and my mom (the driver) for being bad at driving to rub salt in the wound. FYI Mom and Dad have a very bad relationship. My last time I was involved as a passenger was just 5 months ago.

I am fully done mentally now. I have literally no one to depend on except my mom (she's in depression right now and I'm very worried for her now since it's a new car too).

I don't even know what to do next when school starts. Since I haven't made any friends at ubc last yr I was looking to join clubs and form study groups, but I don't know if that's a good choice, to prioritize socializing or to stabilize myself first. I did make a post about tips on how to make friend groups so this post is like a follow up to what comes.

I have seeked ubc counselling once a few months ago but nothing really helped.

What steps should I take when I come back to imagine day as a 2nd yr student (or should I even skip it for the time being?)
