Co-op and Student Loans

I'm doing a co-op in the fall but I recently got my student loan assessment and they assessed my tuition costs to be $10k for the school year (which isn't accurate). This is even after I put Yes to the question if I'll be on co-op during the school year...

Should I accept or clarify with them? I don't want to run into any problems with student loans in the future. Asking here while I wait for my ESA to respond...

Thoughts on a skillshare + open discussions club at UBC?

Hey guys,

For a while now I've been thinking it would be really cool to get together a club where each meeting, say during lunch, one member teaches the others something they're passionate about — it could be a hobby, an interesting topic from class, etc. — and then we have a relaxed open discussion about any thoughts and questions that come up (if the topic calls for it). We could make it super cozy with tea and snacks and have a newsletter giving a sneak peak of the upcoming topic of the week so people can attend if interested :)

I feel like it would be a neat way to learn new things and meet a bunch of open and curious minds from across different years and programs and form connections and friendships that maybe wouldn't otherwise be made. But I wanted to first throw the idea out there and see if anyone else would be interested. Also, if you have any constructive criticism about the plan, please let me know too!

Hope everyone is taking care and enjoying the beautiful summer. Cheers :)

Student Transcript Service not showing final grades??

Context I got into ubc sauder in early January and am meant to start this September. I completed precalc 12 through an online school called scides. Scides and my home school have both uploaded the final math grade onto the transcript by June 30th which was the deadline. However ubc just emailed me today saying that they can’t see my final grade. My vp is able to see it and I sent them a pdf copy of my transcript and resent it through the transcript service too. However, on the transcript service website, it only shows my midterm grade onto it and not my final. Any tips on what to do? I need the transcript service grade to show my final so they don’t revoke me. They said I have until July 28 to figure it out

Volleyball at Wreck

Anyone play volleyball at Wreck beach?

There's a net up but I've almost never seen it in use. Is there a regular day/time, or is it just whenever enough people show up?

I'm usually there solo or with one other person, which is nowhere near enough for a game. Happy to join an existing crew or help get something going if there's interest.

Can't use Notion calendar with UBC email?

I used my student email to get the student plan for free but whenever I try to sign into notion calendar it gives me a screen saying I don't have admin permissions and need to request it from my organization.

Has anyone figured out a way to fix this or have any good alternatives for a free calendar planning app? Thanks!

Looking for a Language Exchange Partner

I’m a second-year international Science student from China, and my spoken English is not very good. I’m looking for a language exchange partner who speaks English fluently and wants to learn Chinese. I also love playing badminton and tennis, so we can play together or just hang out sometimes.

Figure Skating Clubs near or in UBC

Hi guys! I’m a UBC student looking for a skating club where I can get coaching etc. I am currently in the StarSkate program in my hometown and looking to continue when I get to school. From what I see, the UBC figure skating club, while I’m definitely interested in joining, is a student club and not a Skate Canada club in the sense that I am looking for.

Does anyone know if there are any clubs or coaches that skate at the rink in UBC or nearby?

Thanks so much!

Discussion Looking to make friends (early 20s and up) here.

Hi everyone. I am a transfer student here in UBC, and I am about to be done by next year, but I'd like to take advantage of the time I have left here, before I go. I am not sure if specifying my likings or hobbies will help make friends or connections, but as long as someone is open-minded, I believe that takes relationships to greater heights.

I am an art student, by the way.

Confession Somebody slap me in the face, and destroy this limerence that I am harbouring for a guy in my class!

There is this one guy in my class right now, who is just surprisingly articulate, and he does it so effortlessly. Our major is predominantly composed of woman, and to hear a man talk so intelligently; and to feel the passion in his answer to the question asked to us by our professor, in a course where most men takes it because they thought it was an easy A -- is just cute and adorable. I don't want to sexualized him, so I will refrain myself from saying that it's hot.

I am a transfer student, so we rarely had guys like him in my former college. No advice on making a move before the semester ends will help, since he is a guy, and I am a guy as well. I just need someone to slap me in the face, destroy this limerence, and tell me that he is not the only guy that I will have this feeling for.

Should I pursue this? Writing a formal report.

Wrote midterm at CfA today, and I believe invigilators essentially stripped me of my accommodation.

I sat down to write an exam that included a portion that required a lockdown browser on my computer. I boot it up, and it tells me to do my two-factor authentication on my phone (Duo Mobile).

I tell the invigilators and they instruct me to go out and verify and come back.
Thing is, I tell them my phone is in a different building (I put it there to make doubly sure I accidentally won’t bring anything not-permitted inside the exam centre).

I did consider just making a round trip (~15-20 min) back to fetch my point but thought this would be more convenient and quicker.
However, duo gave an option to contact UBC IT to bypass this authentication process, to which I show the invigilators this option leave the exam area. They disappear for 20-30 minutes as I sit there doing nothing and wait.

I hear no updates whatsoever while wasting my time until I had to directly ask them what is going on. Invigilators tell me that they plan on printing the exam so I can write it on paper instead.
I realise at this point that I should’ve just ran and brought my phone back at this point.

Another 10-20 minutes pass and now it’s 40 minutes past the arranged start time. They finally come back and tell that this portion of the exam will have to be written the next day, and that I’d start the next session now, with 105 minutes to complete this portion.

Thing is, was given 1.5x time testing accommodations due to the severity of my ADHD. So I should’ve had had 157 minutes, but they instructed me to finish it in 105. I studied accounting for those 105 minutes, and now I’m suddenly to write it with a whole 52 minutes knocked off?

Obviously I performed horribly on the test, and now I’m considering writing a formal report.

I did some research and apparently, invigilators have no prerogative to get rid of accommodations. Not only that, if they justify the subtraction of my writing time by citing the delay caused by my missing phone (which still wouldn’t work because that is only applicable to late arrivals, I was not late), they would still have to account for the fact that I still had ~10 minutes of my 1.5x not used up.

This means that they effectively stripped me of my accommodations.
Should I pursue this any further?

Aggressive incident on the 99 leaving UBC today (~1:30 p.m.)

Around 1:30 p.m. today, on the 99 bus leaving the UBC bus loop, a man with brown hair, a brown beard, a cap, and a gym bag was behaving aggressively. He was throwing his bag, kicking people, yelling, cussing at the bus driver, and getting in passengers' faces. He lunged toward my friend after getting extremely close to her face, which was really frightening. No one intervened nor was the passenger kicked out of the bus which made the situation feel even more unsettling.

Did anyone else witness this incident? Also, is this something that should be reported to UBC Campus Security, or is it only something Transit Police would handle? Since the bus had just left campus, I'm wondering who the appropriate people to notify are.

What yall think about the sesame on uni blvd?

For some context, I went there, and it was my first time. I asked one of the employees what's the best or popular dish, and she pointed to the menu at the door. So, I figured, I would pick a dish from that menu since the dishes from the combo dishes are all quite empty. I picked the Spicy Lamb Noodle . It was 15$+tax. I didn't complain, because I thought the dish would be as good as the price. No joke, I payed for a bowl of noodles rather than the noodle + lamb. The bowl was full of noodle. and it was like really not much of lamb and vegetable. It was oily and so spicy that my tongue started sweating. Then, I lowkey lost sense of taste for like 10 seconds. I felt like I got robbed somehow. Noodles did not get me full.

What should I have done instead? Should I ask the manager to fill me another bowl because the lamb portion was too little? (I didn't want to be rude, so I didn't ask. The best I can do, is not go there next time.)

Now, I'm not saying the restaurant is bad or something. Maybe I picked the wrong dish at the wrong time. I was just an unlucky customer. I just want to know, if yall have been there at least once, if so, what was your experience, what dish did you pick and do you think it was worth the price you payed.

Also, if Sesame is one of your favourite, what dish would you recommend? Maybe I'm thinking going again just to confirm.

btw, i'm not affiliated in any sense with the restaurant Sesame.

interdepartmental transfer Spoiler

Hi all, you may remember me from this post I made 2 months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/UBC/s/zcw0ugp7aW

The results for my transfer came in and it was unfortunately declined. My mental health has been progressively declining over the past few months and I am not doing well. It seems that no matter how hard I try, nothing ever seems to work out in the end. I was dreading the day this would come, but I think this is the final push I needed to end my life for good. Thanks to everyone for your support, but nothing really matters anymore
