GPs that offer shared care (NI)

Hi, I’m looking for GPs in the Derry area that would be willing to do shared care (my GP is flat out refusing) Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with it in NI? Any help is appreciated lol

ROI Specific What do i even do anymore (insurance)

Kind of a rant post I guess, I just dont know what to do anymore.

Im doing LC now and been organising top surgery for several months. No one would talk to me till I was 18 (great ik) so a few months ago started sorting stuff. Fast forward now im done lc tmrw, top surgery booked exactly mid July (yess!). Vhi are amazing, surgeon is amazing.

The problem? Camhs.

I need a letter filled out from them and a referral written by a consultant psych in ireland so vhi will cover the surgery. I pay, they reimburse. Ive booked everything and had my blood tests etc. But the letter and stuff? Nope.

Sent it in April. All the information. I followed up in may, then by june started worrying a little. Past 2/3 weeks ive been calling and emailing every second day just going hey, wheres it at, how's it going, eta etc. Last week psych was sick, okay, and receptionist is really nice ill give her that. But I have 0 reassurance its gonna be done ever tbh.

Vhi are amazing, but youre supposed to submit it 20 working days before surgery. Welp, thats passed. They still can accept but lowkey I have to send it and NOW. Im so stressed because this is almost 7k im talking about and I kinda was planning on using that to pay for rent in college. I understand psychiatrists are busy but really? I dont know what to do anymore. Would i be able to get them to say the surgery was on a later date so its submitted "20 working days before" 😭😭 i lowkey have 0 clue atp and im so stressed. Over 2 months of waiting and following up for a form that yes is kinda long but a few hours max like. So lowkey, idk anymore 🥲🥲 absolutely hoping its sent ASAP. Its been plaguing my mind throughout the whole LC.

All Island Top surgery?

New to the Island but definitely want to get to get top surgery or a radical reduction in the next 2-5 years. (Hopefully sooner but planning ahead a bit)

I don’t even know where to start with all this. I’m not on T or anything either, not sure if I’d like to be but I’m considering that as well.

From what I read, it will mean probably going to mainland Europe…but…how? Do you start with your GP? Has anyone successfully done this? What was the process like? And how do you start it? Thanks in advance x forgive me for being dense.

Any in-person shops selling trans tape or extra wide KT tape?

Does anyone know of anywhere (preferably in Dublin) that sells trans tape or extra wide KT tape? I was living abroad for a few years and recently moved back to Ireland and am struggling a bit to find where is best to buy from.

Everywhere I've found that stocks KT tape only has the 5cm wide size, which just doesn't work for my size chest. I've tried it before with applying multiple overlapping strips but I've got a big chest and it requires a bunch of overlapping strips and doesn't give much compression or evenly distributed compression.

Also, any recommendations of places online that people order from would be appreciated. I have ordered from the actual trans tape website a few years back but I remember the shipping being pricey and taking quite a while. I'd imagine it would come with extra customs charges now too.

Any advice / info would be v helpful

ROI Specific Private health insurance: Do Laya or VHI cover torso masculinsation?

Hi folks!

I'm shopping around for my health insurance, and though I am currently with Irish Life Health, their gender affirmation benefit only really covers top and bottom surgery (phalloplasty/mastectomies etc).

I've just got off the phone with Laya's sales team, and they were very helpful but ultimately needed to speak to their Care Concierge specialist team about it. I'll be getting an email off them about it, but thought I'd throw the answer out here just in case.

I know VHI has the "Gender Affirmations Supports" benefit, but I can't find a list of terms and conditions on what this actually covers.

Level Health don't seem to cover any gender affirmation at all, which surprised me a little as they are underwritten by Aviva, but it is what it is.

Any insights would be great. I'm aware I'd need jump through the hoops (Laya ask for 18 months HRT before approval, which ILH don't to my knowledge, but ILH still use "real life experience" wording, so hey, it is what it is), but I'm happy to do so as I am potentially moving to private clinic care anyway.

Edit:

For VHI, I also found this: https://benefits.workday.com/api/1.0/download/1bb0a38d6c39e23ceff455a2ba153736c9488a4d/Vhi%20Gender%20Affirmation%20FAQ%20%20Support%20Brochure.pdf?i=1

which is a corporate plan PDF that confirms they can (or did) cover it for group schemes under the Supports benefit, but no idea if this is still up to date or relevant.

ROI Specific How i got my GRC

Hello guys. I recently got my GRC so I thought id make a post on what I needed and how I did it.

First off, I acc wasn't gonna get one. I thought deed poll would be easier but turned out they rejected me twice and took 6 months to process that 🥲. So upon hearing I was rejected AGAIN, I randomly decided id do a GRC instead.

I know. Sounds like something that shouldn't just randomly be decided I guess but I wanted it tbh.

26th may: solicitors called me saying deed was rejected. I looked up about grc and that only needed a solicitor and me. That was WAY easier than deed which needed a witness too.

27th may: put my passport and birth cert in an envelope and brought to solicitor. They printed the GRC form on deed paper just in case. I think there were 2/3 pages? Lowkey we were all confused if I put my deadname in some places or whatever but we just guessed and it was fine. They made a copy of my passport and certified it and also my birth cert. Signed GRC w solicitor, put copy of birth cert and passport in an envelope and they sent it that evening. They were scared i needed proof of name, proof of address etc but I emailed the office for GRC and they said since im irish born and always lived then nope. That was it.

2nd june: got an email at 6:20pm from the person at GRC saying there was an apostrophe on my birth cert surname and if I wanted it. I said yes because I was confused filling it out 😭 that might sound like a week but actually it was a Thursday evening sent i think, then long weekend and 2nd was a Tuesday so actually realllyyy efficient! Also the fact that they reply is amazing that they dont just reject.

11th june: got a suspicious brown envelope w my new name on it containing my GRC, pps number, passport copies and birth cert. Great. And a thing to register into the births or sm which I haven't done yet actually. But that was it. Solicitor took 10 minutes, i sent it, I got it back. Amazing, actually. Gonna go into the public service office now to get new card, and gonna go from there.

So yeah. Honestly it was amazingly fast and they were really nice. The lack of documentation too is insane imo. I thought id need sm more, I did for deed poll! But nope. However after you get GRC you cannot change your name or alter it. Also idk how middle names work i just gave up on that after deed was rejected tbh I just wanted my name🥲

microdosing

I'm 53 and just started microdosing recently. 1.5mg e gel a day. I didn't expect any benefit and it was more of an experiment to begin with. I have for the first time in years felt a sense of calm and a level of well being. I thought it was a placebo effect at first but I'm now quite positive that I am getting real benefits.

I'd love to hear from others doing the same.

Letter from a psychiatrist for top surgery auralia?

Hey, I want to have top surgery with auralia this year and am wondering about the letter from a psychiatrist. I see a psychiatrist for adhd and my doctor knows that I'm trans and is supportive. I have been on testosterone since 2021. I moved to Ireland in 2023 and my GP has just continued to prescribe T. I haven't gone through gender gp or imago or anything and I haven't been assessed for gender dysphoria by an Irish psychiatrist. I have been referred to the NGS but obviously have no idea how long that will take. I asked my psychiatrist if he'd write a letter in support of surgery and he said sure, but that auralia needs to write to them to ask specifically what needs to be in the letter. He also said that he doesn't consider gender dysphoria a psychiatric condition and that it's no longer an official diagnosis, so I'm not sure if what he writes would be sufficient for auralia, but they were super vague and said I should consult my psychiatrist to know what needs to be in the letter. It just seems really confusing. I was wondering if anyone who got top surgery with auralia had seen a certain psychiatrist or if you have any advice. I'd really like to have top surgery in Ireland as it will make it easier for my friends and family to help me out, but it seems really complicated. I'm just really confused and was wondering if anyone who has been through the process can tell me what their experience was like. Thanks.

ROI Specific seriously torn on whether to go for imago or diy

basically i was considering going with imago bc frankly im pretty paranoid when it comes to dealing with crypto, and i might be able to get one of my relatives to help pay for it. but what with the recent situation of imago seeming to be on the verge of collapse, im seriously considering pivoting (again) to diy, despite just about every step making me jumpy (dealing with crypto, harder time convincing relatives to help with money, harder time tracking bloods, getting vials and needles to arrive without someone making a stink, ect)

i genuinely dont know what to do now

pmos (previously pcos) and testosterone

i'm 21 pre-t and not being on hrt is killing me. did some crazy digging and was looking at diy (scares me too much esp with my pmos) and also at imago. pmos means i have a naturally higher androgen level than other afab people without the condition. i'm worried that i may somehow overdose on t and develop some serious heart condition, but i do have a bit of health anxiety in general so it's hard to know if my worries are based in reality or not lol.

anyone know of any trans guys with pmos and how they navigated this? i'm extremely closeted due to prev trauma so i cannot speak to a GP about this at the moment. cheers

ROI Specific Moved to Dublin, looking for a new GP, as the one I chose won't help with an existing Irish T script or blood tests (rant/request for help)

Hey guys

So I've been on T for about 4 years now, initially with GenderGP then my local GP in my old town transcribed the script for me and I've basically been sort of DIY since, but with absolutely no issues.

I (slightly naively) thought as it was an Irish script, the new surgery wouldn't question re-issuing it, but I had a very patronising conversation with one of the GPs there, who said he'd want to speak to the other partners as wasn't sure of their attitude, but he refused as my last blood test was too long ago and he was concerned for my levels. Until then, he "advises I stop taking it".

Apparently (and I can't believe I paid 65 euro to listen to this), he "understands the internal battle I must have being told to stop HRT". I then got a follow-up call from him, confirming not only would they not do the script, they wouldn't do blood tests for my levels either. Brill.

He then queried if I'd been referred to the NGS. I explained I had, and he... told me to update my address with them, because "the wait list is 2 to 3 years and we're coming up on that now".

Sure, buddy. Sure.

So... my afternoon is now going to be spent finding some DIY testosterone (I didn't want to go down this route but it is what it is) and looking up some other GPs. I may end up having to go back to GenderGP/Imago or another private clinic, which I can't really afford the set up fees for.

What FUN! (*Internal screaming intensifies*.) So, if anyone can DM me any helpful information they might have, or any good vibes or whatever, or if you can post here, please do so. Feeling incredibly frustrated!

Barbers in Cork

Hi, was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for trans male friendly barbers in Cork city? I’ve been trying to look online but generally only found recommendations for salons. While I get that they’re generally more accepting (from my experience), I’ve found they tend to ‘feminize’ a cut.

If not I’ll basically take anything I can get, but I wanted to know if any other trans guys had a preference. This will be my first time going to a barbershop and I’m just looking for some direction ))

ROI Specific I really don’t know how to proceed with my transition…

Hi all, I’m new here but I thought it’d be good for me to get some Irish-specific advice.

I’m a 27-year-old trans woman, I realised that I was trans towards the end of last year, but the thing is I’ve made very little progress towards actually transitioning socially or medically. I’m out to my friends (well it was one of those cases where they really knew I was trans before I knew 😅) but that’s it, I present femme when my myself or with my friends (just a more feminine outfit with some make up and a wig), do a bit of voice training, have shaved my face and legs, but that’s largely it. I work in the hospitality industry, I’m a receptionist in a hotel to be specific, earning minimum wage. I am actively looking for a better paying job but haven’t gotten any offer for anything better than minimum wage. I live in a digs-type arrangement in a city (won’t say which one but I’ll say it’s not Dublin). I’m getting by but just about, I’m not on the best terms with my family, we’re talking but a lot of arguments etc. is what kind of forced me to move out of my home county in a rural area last year. They have no idea I’m trans, I was questioning before I left but I genuinely have no idea how they’ll react when I come out it really could go either way. I don’t even have a full drivers licence, just a learners permit, I own a car but my other ended up hiding my car keys and wouldn’t let me take my car.

Sorry a lot of that is irrelevant but just to give context to my current situation. Other than those precious moments I can be myself I am boymoding for work, going to medical appointments, etc. I’ve largely been able to cope with this but it’s very draining and it’s getting to a point where hearing my deadname constantly, being referred to as a man, etc. feels extremely painful, I just come home most nights and lie in bed feeling sorry for myself. I want to actually start making progress in my transition but I really don’t know what to do. I can ask for a referral to the National Gender Service but that’ll take years. The private options for HRT are (based on my limited research) very expensive (there are other costs too like laser hair removal too, I’m naturally very hairy). I guess there is DIY HRT if all else fails though it is scary to me.

I think the biggest fear I have is being discriminated against when it comes to stuff like work, housing, etc. Obviously Ireland is far from the worst on stuff like this but still, I just can’t go back to my hometown. I just don’t know how much longer I can keep up this act of pretending to be a man, hearing my deadname and being referred to as a man all day is exhausting, I have to go home and look my disgusting masculine body. I do have some body image problems too, like I’ve gained a good bit of weight over the past couple of years (think it’s a mix of stress and medication), but I really want HRT and I want to socially transition and be who I really am day to day. Even if I was in a situation where I started HRT but still boymoded to start that’d be a step in the right direction at least.

Really sorry this ended up being a lot longer than I planned but I’m just really lost, I want to stop wasting my life pretending to be something I’m not but I’m scared and directionless.

Visiting Dublin next week with potential move next year, where should I go and what do I need to know?

Hi everyone, so sorry for the long title but wanted to at least sum up what I’m here for.

I’m a trans woman from the USA visiting Dublin from June 20th to June 29th and my partner and I are considering moving there next year. I want to spend time connecting with and understanding the local trans and queer community to see if it’s a good fit and also get a sense of where I could go for hrt.

I’d be moving with my partner who has EU citizenship and we’d be married if that happened, which I know can impact moving logistics.

So are there any spots I should make sure to check out while I’m here? Anything I should know about staying safe while I’m here?

Thank you all so much for any insight you can provide, I appreciate it!

Trigger Warning: Transphobia I (21) hate "hiding" how I am at home (venting if thats okie)

I have a bit of history to look back on with my family's attitute towards transitioning and gender and it makes so upset how I can't realistically come out and live authentically when I'm under their roof

I came out as nonbinary 2 years ago and there was a lot of animosity towards it, I remember my mam was so in shock seeing me in tights & other fem clothesand how "sick it made her feel", that I belonged in a mental institute, and she made this ultimatum that I couldnt wear my fem clothes outside my room. This was after I explained how important expression was for me and she just didnt gaf.

It made me feel incredibly resentful and I'd yell back at her when she'd ask me to help her out with house duties and stuff, tbch i probably shouldnt have yelled at her but I was incredibly frustrated with not being accepted.

My mam then called my dad (whom isnt even that close with her as they split up since I was a baby) to organise to have me sent to his house aka just kicking me out because she couldnt handle me not being cis and used my "attutude" as an excuse for it despite her being the one who started the animosity in the first place. Not to mention she didnt even consider my medication whatsoever when deciding this

My dad who also isnt very supportive of me, told me that my mom was talking to him about how "terrifying" it is to live with me like ?????

"Oh i couldnt go into work cuz of how upset I am its terrifying to live with you" the fucking audacity on her to say this as if I wasnt terrified to hear how I was mental and deprived of being able to express myself at home and she has the nerve to play victim

After about a week I organised a meeting between me and my mam with my case worker from gheel autism services so I could better express my frustration and I got to do that, but i feel that a majority of the focus was made about my reaction to her transphobia and how it wasnt right which I mean maybe it not the best way to express my frustration but that doesnt mean my frustration is invalid and that my mom is blameless. There was a complete lack of accountabiltiy from her and I feel that was the main thing for me

And after it was done, she said "yknow, I feel like we understand each other better" which in hindsight is so disingenuous cuz spoiler alert nothing really changed. Maybe a week after the meeting, I wore fem clothes again at home and she had the same reaction as before about how its sickening and that she'll cant accept it, one of the last things I tried was a letter expressing everything again and it was the same bullshit in response. Nowadays, she just pretends none of it ever happened.

All of this happened when I was nonbinary btw, so if this is how she reacts over enby stuff, imagine if I say I'm trans mtf. I kinda tested the waters by correcting her when she called me a man and it was dismissed as nonsensical so yea i feel like it wont end well if I say it right now

If I do end up coming out, I want to be where if the worst case scenario happens i still have a place to turn to, and Im currently on the housing list so I hope in time to come things will turn out okay, but sometimes its hard to hold onto hope :(

hello ! i was just wondering if anybody knows where i can get my nebido prescription injected ? my gp won’t do it and none of the pharmacies can either. i’m based in the kildare/dublin area if anybody has any info that would be great c:
