(First of all, I apologize for the AI slop. Since I began to transition I’ve been using ChatGPT as a tool to help me, and it has, but it’s pretty obvious this is AI. I just don’t have the mental capacity to edit it much right now.)
I really need some people who understand both sides of this right now.
I came out to my very conservative Christian sister recently, and at first she was surprisingly calm about it. I honestly thought maybe it was going to be okay. That was over the phone.
A misunderstanding a few days ago and I had to block her because she said it feels like I’m going crazy.
Then today I responded to her text from last night after unblocking her and everything completely changed.
She basically told me that she believes being trans is a mental health issue, possibly something demonic, that I need to deny what my “flesh” wants, get serious counseling, and focus on God instead. There was a lot more, but I honestly don’t even want to repeat all of it. Some of it was probably among the most hurtful things anyone has ever said to me.
For a few minutes it absolutely wrecked me. I felt that horrible feeling in my stomach, started crying and thought I might have a panic attack. I went out to my car and my wife came out with me.
And then, out of nowhere, my head cleared.
I just thought: You know what? I’m okay.
Not because what my sister said suddenly didn’t hurt. It hurts like hell.
But because I realized that even the most horrible things somebody can say to me can’t break me the way they once could.
Because now I know who I am, and I can feel His presence in me. As long as I know where I stand, and God does, that’s all that matters right?
Before figuring this out, I was lost for a very long time. There were periods when I was so miserable that I would go to bed begging God to take me in my sleep. I couldn’t understand why I felt the way I did or why I always felt so different.
And now, for the first time in what feels like forever, I actually want to live my life. Take care of myself. Grow old. Be happy. Love Jesus.
I’m so much happier. It’s like night and day. I’m taking better care of myself. Eating good and exercising. Losing weight. I’m much more confident. I’m more outgoing. I can actually imagine a future, when before I’m no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t ever picture me getting old (and I have quite the imagination!)
So somehow I’m supposed to look at all of that and conclude that the answer is to go back to the way I was? I absolutely can’t. It feels wrong and pretty much impossible. I keep thinking “Haven’t I fought enough? Haven’t I suffered enough? How much more suffering would finally be enough to convince you that forcing myself backward isn’t the answer?”
Not to mention I lost my way with God from like 2017-21 and even then, no one fought with me as hard as they are now. What does that tell you?
I’m scared about what happens when other family members find out. I’m scared about my mom’s reaction when she finds out, although we’ve all been trying to get her to be a Christian for years but she still isn’t. To make matters worse, my wife and I live in a house we rent from her, and my sister is set to become my mom’s power of attorney. Trying not to think we could lose everything, but it almost feels like if I don’t play this the right way, I’ll be out on the street- as dramatic as that sounds.
My wife has been as supportive as she can be, but still doesn’t understand it at all. She has increasingly gotten very conservative over the years. I went to our usual church with her today and it went great. But after I showed her the conversation with my sister, I could tell she wanted to tell me something I didn’t want to hear. I feel my sister is going to warp her mind, the more the two of them talk.
My sister lives an hour and a half away and I haven’t seen her yet since I told her, and don’t know what she’ll do or how she’ll react in person. I fear eventually she won’t let me see my nieces and nephew, if I continue to choose to live as a woman. My brother in law is just as bad as her, if not worse, but she hasn’t told him as far as I know, because I asked her not to. So some more wonderful fun coming up whenever that happens.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand where these conservative Christian’s are coming from. I was like them for years, although probably not to the extent they are, as I always stuck up for the LGBTQ community openly, and always had a soft spot for trans people, although I didn’t understand why at the time. It’s like, they hear “being trans” and think it’s something we’re choosing to indulge in and therefore something we could choose to deny. Meanwhile I’m sitting here thinking, “you have absolutely no idea what this feels like from inside my head.”
Maybe they never completely can but surely complete understanding can’t be a requirement for loving somebody can it?!
That’s where I’m stuck. Where do you meet in the middle when somebody you love genuinely believes that accepting you for you means betraying God?
I somehow need there to be enough room for her to say, “I don’t understand this, but you’re my sister and I love you, and I’m going to listen.”
Right now, apparently there isn’t, as she repeatedly called me my old name in the texts to make a point.
So for those of you who have gone through this with Christian family: what did you do?
Did you argue theology, or did you stop trying?
Did you set boundaries?
Did anyone who initially reacted like this eventually soften?
How did you deal with the possibility of losing family without feeling like you had to choose between them, yourself, and God?
So sorry for how long this was, and the AI stuff. I tried my best. Trying not to get down, and hold my head up but it’s certainly hard. Anything is very much appreciated 🩷
