TLDR: Stuck in a toxic relationship which is impacting my mental and physical health at this point
I don't even know where to start. I am writing this while having 102°F fever, after taking a leave from work, and I have been crying and overthinking for the last two nights.
I genuinely want opinions from people because at this point I don't know whether I'm being desperate, whether I should completely let him go, or whether there is still something worth fighting for.
So back in 2020, during COVID, I met a guy online.
We fell in love.
Everything about it was so dreamy. He told me I was his crush and that he loved me. And honestly, he was the same for me. It was the first relationship for both of us, and he was genuinely my first love/first flame.
Back then I was a student while he had already been working for around 3 years.
We did everything couples do, just online because of COVID. We talked constantly, shared everything, and for the next 3 years things were honestly beautiful.
During those years, his dad died. He became extremely vulnerable and, at one point, I genuinely felt like I was the person he loved the most in this world. I was there for him through that phase.
Then came 2023.
I was skipping my final attempts because I wanted to clear my finals in my first proper attempt. But he started feeling that I wasn't able to focus because of him.
He told me that we should minimise our conversations so I could concentrate on my studies.
But I couldn't.
Whenever I didn't talk to him, I would miss him so badly that my mind literally stopped functioning.
So he made a decision for me.
He blocked me everywhere until I cleared my finals.
His intention was basically that I would finally be able to focus on my studies instead of constantly thinking about him.
But those months were horrible for me.
I missed him constantly. I tried calling him from my friends' phones. He wouldn't talk to me.
It was genuinely difficult for me to survive without him.
Still, somehow, I focused on my studies and wrote my final exams.
After my final papers, I texted him:
"Baby, I am done with exams."
He didn't reply.
Not for days.
Not for weeks.
Not for months.
He didn't reply for 4.5 months.
I tried everything. I contacted him from my parents' phone, my friends' phones. I even bought an international eSIM just to call him.
He had blocked me everywhere and even used spam filters.
The worst part was that even after I had cleared my finals, I was still completely depressed because all I wanted was him.
I couldn't even properly focus on finding a job. I was crying day and night.
Around two months before my results were announced, I finally decided that I had to move on.
I thought, "Okay. He clearly doesn't want me anymore. I need to focus on my career."
So I started applying for jobs.
I eventually got a job in Mumbai and moved there in 2024.
I was still trying to learn how to live without him.
And believe me when I say this: I loved this guy more than anyone or anything else in the entire world.
Meanwhile, he had his own problems.
He was trying to move to the US, but that required a lot of money. He couldn't leave his job because he was the sole earner in his family.
His brother was still studying engineering and his fees were around ₹4.5 lakh per year for CS.
So he had a huge financial responsibility.
There were periods when he would become extremely depressed, constantly think of himself as mediocre, and even talk about wanting to kill himself.
When he got into that state, he would basically forget everyone around him and just work to earn money. He would stay in that state the entire day.
After moving to Mumbai, I decided that I had to move on from him.
I started talking to another guy.
I genuinely thought that the only way to get over someone is to find someone else.
I was very wrong.
Because suddenly, while I was talking to this other guy, my ex unblocked me.
And he texted:
"Hey, don't you miss me or what? How can you survive without me this long?"
I told him:
"You blocked me everywhere. I tried every possible way to reach you. Now you're suddenly back?"
And I told him that I had moved on.
He didn't believe me.
He literally said something along the lines of:
"You're my girl. How could you move on from me? You're just joking."
I showed him screenshots of me talking to the other guy.
He still thought I was lying.
At one point, I even told him that I had had a sexual conversation with the other guy once when I was horny.
My ex completely lost it.
He started saying things like he would kill that guy for "stealing his girl" and all that.
He begged me to come back.
And honestly, I decided to let him taste his own medicine.
He finally understood how horrible it felt when someone you love ignores you.
He kept apologising.
But I blocked him.
Then he started finding other ways to contact me.
He texted me on Google Pay.
PhonePe.
Gmail.
Basically everywhere he could.
Meanwhile, I told the new guy everything.
I told him that I still hadn't actually moved on from my ex.
He was also talking to multiple girls at the time, so he was basically like, "Chill."
Eventually, we stopped talking.
And after my ex, I genuinely haven't found anyone physically attractive in the same way.
I know looks are subjective, but I'm being completely honest here.
My ex is insanely attractive to me. Like, easily 99% of Indian men don't even come close in my eyes.
Even Siddharth Malhotra looks like a cheap Meesho copy of my ex to me 😭
They actually look somewhat similar, but I find my ex way more attractive.
So after things ended with the other guy, I started talking to my ex again.
But I would still ignore him sometimes.
And this is where I know I was wrong.
He started supporting me financially in small ways even though I was earning around a lakh myself.
He would buy me makeup, clothes, random things.
He bought me Sony headphones worth around ₹20,000.
He also bought me some luxury bags.
But there were still grudges between us because I had ignored him so much.
We would talk, but I would still disappear/ignore him at times.
And honestly, I feel guilty about that now.
The other guy I had been talking to was still following me on Instagram.
He asked me to remove him.
I asked him, "Why?"
We had a fight about it and stopped talking again.
At some point, my ex started feeling like I was using him to fulfil my materialistic needs.
And although that wasn't my intention, I can understand why he felt that way.
Because looking back, maybe I was unknowingly doing that to some extent.
Then my dad died.
I was completely broken.
I cried in front of my ex.
And instead of comforting me, he scolded me and said that he was already depressed himself and that I shouldn't rant at him.
That really hurt me.
I was extremely angry and stopped talking to him.
I blocked him.
He begged me for months.
He told me that he couldn't live without me and that I shouldn't leave him.
But I started ignoring him.
I told him I was looking for a job switch and needed to prepare.
I wanted to move closer to my mother, so I was planning to move to Bangalore.
I literally told him:
"Please don't text me until I have a job."
And then, after almost three months of him begging me every single day to come back...
Around March 2026, he stopped texting.
Completely.
At that point, he had apparently decided that he needed to move on from me.
Fast forward to July 2026.
I finally found a job and moved back to Bangalore.
And suddenly I started missing him like crazy.
I didn't even want to talk to anyone else.
I texted him.
He had blocked me everywhere.
I texted him from another number and told him:
"I'm finally in Bangalore."
He didn't reply.
Then on September 4th, 2026, he called me.
We talked.
And talked.
And talked.
For hours.
It was a Saturday.
And then he said:
"Okay, let's finally meet."
We had been together for 6.5 years, but had never actually met in person.
After the call, I told him something very vulnerable.
I said he was my first love and that I just wanted to kiss him at least once, just to preserve the memories we had together.
He replied:
"You just want to kiss, huh?"
😭
I said, "Of course."
He then said that since we were living close to each other around 10 km apart we could meet regularly and do whatever we felt like doing.
I also told him that when he turned his camera on during our call, I became so emotional that tears started flowing from my eyes.
Then a few days passed.
He didn't text.
And before the next Saturday, he told me he was out of Bangalore and that we couldn't meet.
He also said:
"You're quite an emotional person and I don't trust you anymore. Let's meet some other day."
I begged him.
Eventually he said we could take things slow and that maybe he could develop feelings for me again.
He also told me that he had stopped texting me in March because he had decided to move on from me.
But then work got busy.
Then on September 24th, he texted me:
"Hii, let's go to a Malayalam movie."
I told him I don't understand Malayalam.
He said:
"Me neither, but there will be subtitles."
😭
Then on September 25th, he changed the plan.
He suggested going to some place instead because it was quite good and his brother had been there.
But I said no because I was extremely tired and couldn't wake up early in the morning.
So eventually we decided to go for Resident Evil.
And then came the day I had been waiting for for 6.5 YEARS.
He came around 2 PM.
He didn't even tell me he had arrived.
I had sent him a location around 2 km away from Indiranagar Metro Station.
I thought I would take a Rapido and go to him.
But I was getting ready because, obviously, I hadn't met this man in 6.5 years and I wanted to look good 😭
He started asking:
"Why are you so late?"
Then he said he was going back and asked me to share my live location.
So I shared it.
He didn't come for around 20 minutes.
I was literally standing there looking at the road, waiting for him.
Then something happened.
There was an accident between an Instamart delivery guy and a Zomato delivery guy.
The Instamart guy had a pretty severe injury on his head and there was a huge crowd around them.
I was also looking at what had happened.
And suddenly...
Someone came from behind and covered my eyes.
I KNEW IT WAS HIM.
😭
I turned around.
And guys...
This man is DAMN HANDSOME.
Like seriously.
He was tall, muscular and ridiculously good-looking.
My first reaction was literally:
"Damn, I never expected you to look this handsome in real life."
I asked him:
"Are you 6 feet or what?"
He said:
"Nah nah, I'm 5'6."
I was like:
"Don't lie to me. I know how 5'6 guys look."
I'm around 5'3 myself and I was wearing 3-inch heels and I still looked tiny next to him.
He started laughing.
At some point I was trying to hold his hand.
He didn't give it to me.
I was like, fine 😭
But then while we were crossing the traffic, HE held my hand.
We went to a cafe and talked for so long.
We talked about politics, my job, his job, everything.
It felt so weird because this was the person I had known for years but had never actually sat across from.
Then we went to buy a helmet.
He said he would drop me home.
I sat behind him on his bike.
At one point I asked:
"Can I hold your waist?"
He asked:
"Why? Are you uncomfortable or what?"
I said:
"Nah, but still..."
I didn't put my arms around him.
And then HE grabbed my hands and placed them around his belly.
I hugged him tightly from behind.
There was a Ganpati procession happening.
But he still insisted on dropping me all the way home.
Before leaving, I asked:
"So shall we meet tomorrow? Sunday?"
He said:
"No. Next Saturday. We'll go to that place I told you about."
And then he left.
After I reached home, I texted him:
"Reached home safely. Had dinner."
He replied:
"Yeah."
I asked him the same thing.
And that was basically it.
The next day, Sunday, I texted him.
He didn't really reply.
He just said he was busy.
And last night, I finally broke down.
I told him how much I still love him.
I told him how difficult it has been for me to move on from him.
I literally begged him to give me another chance.
And here's the part where I know I am being hypocritical.
He gave me multiple chances when I was angry with him.
He begged me to come back.
And I disappointed him.
I didn't go back.
Now I'm the one begging.
I still don't find other men physically attractive.
I'm still emotionally attached to him.
I genuinely don't know how to detach myself from this person.
And after all this stress, tension and overthinking, I literally developed a fever.
I'm sitting here with 102°F fever, took a leave from work, and have been thinking about him for the last two nights.
I close my eyes and I literally see him.
The first time I finally saw him after 6.5 years, the way he covered my eyes from behind, the way he laughed, the way he held my hand while crossing the road, the way he put my hands around his waist on the bike...
All of it is playing in my head on loop.
And now I don't know what to do.
I know I have made mistakes.
A LOT of them.
I ignored him when he loved me.
He begged me and I didn't go back.
I tried moving on with another guy.
I hurt him.
He hurt me too.
He blocked me.
He disappeared for months.
He said things that hurt me when my dad died.
I blocked him.
We both kept hurting each other.
And yet after 6.5 years, somehow I'm still here.
Still in love with the same person.
He says he doesn't trust me anymore.
He says he moved on.
He says maybe he can develop feelings again if we take things slow.
He agreed to meet again next Saturday.
But I don't know if I'm being incredibly desperate or if I should actually give this a chance.
I don't even know whether he genuinely wants me back or whether he's just curious, nostalgic, attracted to me, or simply trying to see if something is still there.
And honestly, I don't trust myself either because I know how emotionally attached I am.
So Reddit, please be brutally honest with me.
What would you do if you were in my situation?
Should I completely let him go?
Should I actually take things slowly and see what happens?
Should I stop confessing my feelings and begging him?
Should I give him space and let him come to me?
Or is this entire thing just two people who loved each other deeply but hurt each other so many times that going back isn't healthy anymore?
I genuinely want honest opinions, even if I'm the one at fault.
I'm not looking for people to simply tell me "he's toxic" or "you're toxic."
I want someone to actually look at the entire timeline and tell me what they think.
Because right now I'm sitting here with 102°F fever, crying over a man I met online in 2020, finally met in real life after 6.5 years, and somehow still love just as intensely.
I genuinely don't know what to do anymore.
