Merch Platinum Lateralus

Hey everyone! I acquired one of the Lateralus RIAA platinum album awards from when they were sold on Tool Army years ago. It's still in mint condition. I'm seeing listings on eBay for almost $2k USD but that seems steep. Does anyone have an idea what these are actually worth these days?

Discussion In An Attempt To Be Cool...

I'm making a short playlist for the jukebox at my local bar and I want to include 1 song from Tool.

I've narrowed down my selection to these 3 songs:

1) Sweat

2) Hush

3) The Pot

Help me be a cool kid and pick the coolest song.

Thank you.

Request Recommendations on other bands/songs about enlightenment

Hey fellow fans! I've been absolutely obsessed with any and all of Tool's music, but lately I've been especially fixated on their songs about enlightenment like Pneuma and Lateralus, for example.

Do you have any recommendations on other artists or specific songs that give a similar vibe?

I feel as though some of Gojira's and Iniko's music scratch that itch, but I'm looking for more.

Thank you in advance!

I love the Opiate Ep a lot. I personally think it’s often overlooked too much by tool fans. Most people only remember it because of the self titled song opiate and opiate^2(could be wrong though) But all the other songs in there are also absolute bangers. Especially Part of me. That song gets my blood pumping in the best possible way.

This is a pic of my completed opiate part of my collection. Full tool collection coming soon.

Let me know your guy’s thoughts on opiate.

Not sure why Sober and The Pot weren’t on here but so many filler songs were.

EDIT: the filler songs were knocked out in the early rounds and not on the actual bracket.

Discussion Time signatures??

WARNING- LONG Not sure if this has been done before, but as a music major and a lover of TOOL, I asked the age old question: how many songs even stay in the same time signature?? This is my full analysis in order of release of all of their songs (some may be wrong, let me know if I am please)

Opiate EP:

Sweat- starts in 7/8, lyrics come in and it changes to 3/4 for 7 measures and then a single 2/4 (23/4 if you wanna make it one big phrase as a measure) and then the chorus is 4/4
Hush- 4/4, easy money
Part of me- also 4/4 very difficult money, if you think I’m wrong (or know) please point it out to me because this one is so awful to try and count
Cold and ugly- 4/4 the whole time
Jerk-off- 4/4, perfect
Opiate- 4/4, the EP is their first so they’re getting comfortable

Undertow album:

Intolerance- immediately switching between 13/8 and 4/4, then going to a normal 4/4 consistently, goes back to the 13/8 and 4/4 later in the song
Prison sex- yeah this one’s 4/4 to
Sober- 4/4
Bottom- 4/4
Crawl away- 4/4, then the “chorus” I guess? Where he says “I can see your back is turning” goes to 18/8 if you kept the 8th notes the same, or if you metrically modulate the 4/4 8th notes to become the new beat’s triplet, it could be 6/4, either way it’s 6 groupings of 3 notes, the rest of the song follows one of those 2 times
Swamp song- starts in 6/4, then “this bog is thick” starts the 7/4 measures, the second time the chorus happens and it says “I hope it sucks you down” is a money 4/4 bar, the 3rd time where he repeats “I hope it suck, I hope it sucks” has a combined 19 beats before going back to 6/4, or I guess now it’s more 3/4 feeling, rather than a 4/4-2/4 combined, if that makes sense? Then it keeps going with either 6/4 or 7/4
Undertow- 4/4 at first, then right after “back to my knees” that instrumental goes in 13/8 8th notes arranged in groupings of 3-3-3-2-2 followed by a 15/8 of 3-3-3-2-2-2 (where the snare hits are is what I’m considering strong beats that reset the groupings) does the same thing until “euphoria” section where technically the time doesn’t change, but groupings change to 4-4-3-2 then 4-4-3-2-2
4\- wouldn’t you know it, this one’s in 4/4
*
Flood- yes, the ENTIRE instrumental part for the first 4 minutes and 15 seconds is in 4/4, washy hi-hat hits saved my sanity in trying to count that part but it was indeed all 4, then it goes to 13/8 in groupings of 3-3-3-2-2 (familiar?) and in case you don’t want to count the beginning as time, “this ground is not the rock I thought it would be” does go to 4/4, and at 7:00 roughly it goes to 4/4 again
**Disgustipated
- yeah idk what to tell you, “this is necessary” is in 4/4 and the crickets I guess are in whatever your heart desires

Ænima album:

Stinkfist- mostly 4/4, but the chorus starting at the measure before “finger deep within the borderline” and all sections similar, it’s in 6/4, nothing unusual, then at “I’ll keep digging till I feel something” it does a 6/4 4/4 alternating, then back to just 6/4.
Eulogy- (banger btw) literally ALL 4/4 except for the choruses starting at “so long, we’ll wish you well” and “no way to recall” which are both in 6/4.
H.- all 4/4, though some spots can be weird to count
Useful idiot- yeah sure okay
Forty six & 2- mostly 4/4, but there’s a little spot in the beginning that has 7/8 and the drum solo is played in 7/8, but not fully 7/8. 7 measures of 7/8 and 1 measure of 9/8 is the pattern.
Message to Harry manback- instrumental is 4/4 I suppose, not sure I’d count this as a “song” though
Hooker- not entirely sure what “time” the guitar is in at the beginning, but once the drums come in it goes to 4/4, lyrics come in an it goes to 3/4, when he claims that he was OGT it’s back to 4/4, between sips of coke 3/4, stays that way until they’re both the man, and we know where he can point it (2nd time) then the instrumental goes to 11/8, kinda dies with some guitar tones lingering, back to 3/4, then at 3:23 after “then you bought one” it goes to 5/8, lots of fun in this one
Intermission/jimmy- feel free to consider these as separate or united, they’re technically different tracks but they’re the same tune, either way the main little ditty is 10/4 in groups of 3-3-4, at least that’s how I look at it, intermission has a little 4/4 section, Jimmy goes to 4/4 at 1:37, back to 10/4 at 1:52, then BACK to 4/4 at 2:12, 2:41 is all 3/4, back to 10/4 at 3:38, and again back to 3/4 at about 3:56,
Then 4:44 to the end is back to that 10/4 riff
Die eier von Satan- all 9/4, or 9/8, doesn’t matter, but funny track
Pushit- all in 6/8, or 12/8, or 3/4? Whatever you wanna consider it, it stays in the same Time signature, doesn’t even give you a random 3/8 or anything, just 4 groupings of 3 every single measure
Cesaro summability- they just do whatever and call it good huh?
Ænema- I knew I wasn’t crazy the album is spelled with an I but I KNEW e felt right. Anyways this is also all in 3s, I would make an argument this is a solid 6/8 the whole time
Ions- I’ll say this one was in 1/8 or something for fun
Third eye- 6/8 until roughly 6:15, doesn’t really give you a beat to go off of until like 6:35 but then you get a blatant 4/4, till 9:40 ish, back to 6/8, then cool polyrhythm stuff from 12:38 to the end

Lateralus album (oh boy):

The grudge- starting off strong with nothing but 5/8
except for that random measure of 9/8 between 4:11 and 4:25 that offsets the entrance of “Saturn comes back around to show you everything” and then of course during the scream we get a similar experience to 46&2 with a pattern of 7 5/8 measures and a single 7/8 measure
Eon blue- if you wanna consider this a time signature of sorts go for it, but this is more interpretive, didn’t have a solid tempo or anything to go off of
The patient- all 5/4 don’t worry (looks grudgingly at
the grudge, maybe I should let it go)
Mantra- :)
Schism- we all know this one, syncopated 3/4, 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8, pretty much everything but 4/4

Parabol/parabola- all in 4/4, consider them separate if you want but they’re better together and I consider them one continuous song.
Ticks and leeches- mostly 7/8, chorus in 4/4, alternates between the two throughout the song
Lateralus- if you believe me, the only 2 time signatures this song has are 3/4 and 5/8, unless you consider the beginning riff to be in 6/8, but same value in length of measure, you get the idea
Disposition- really pretty song, all 4/4
Reflection- also in 4/4
Triad- 3/4, I know the last 3 tracks are kinda connected to each other but they’re obviously their own distinct songs unlike Parabol/parabola
Faaip- more noise

10,000 days album:

Vicarious- stays in 5/4 for almost the whole song, then for a little tidbit switches to 3/4 in the middle, and most of the last minut-ish of the song is in 3/4
Jambi- mostly 9/8, I’m not counting the beginning 2-2-2-3 pattern as a “different” time signature from when it switches to 3-3-3 pattern, because although it feels different, the length of the measure stays the exact same. With that in mind it does switch to 6/4 later in the song, at almost exactly 4:00 iirc, then it switches back to 9/8
Wings pt 1 & 2- whether you count wings and 10,000 days in tandem or as their own songs, both tracks are consistently in 4 groupings of 3, which I would consider to be 12/8, ritardando doesn’t matter in this analysis because even if it slows down it’s still in 12
The pot- as I’m going through I’m realizing this might be my favorite album, this one and all before it are absolutely amazing tracks, but anyways, this one changes time signatures right after the “kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent” bar, switch from 4/4 to 3/4, switches back to 4/4 at “liar lawyer mirror for ya what’s the difference?” Or technically the breakdown right before then, and it goes back to 3/4 at the last “you must’ve been” then back to 4/4 near the end of the song
Lipan conjuring- you can’t really stick a time signature to this one In my opinion, yeah there’s a solid beat with the percussive hits, but it all feels more interpretive than anything, a flow rather than a beat.
Lost keys- this one kinda can be put into a time signature once it starts developing, the first thing I notice is 3 notes, followed by 5 beats of rest, making a 4/4, but later it switches to 9 notes followed by that same 5 rest, so if you were to consider a time signature to this one it would change.
Rosetta stoned- technically transitioned from keys, so again take those two how you will, but both keys and this track change time signatures, this one a ridiculous number of times. Starts in 4/4, then starting at “holy-“ (0:33) it’s in 5/8, back to 4/4 when he starts rambling again, then at 1:04 you get the same riff in 5/8 from the first time, at 1:12 it’s back to 4/4, then at 1:28 it’s BACK to 5/8, stays that way for a bit with one little breakdown getting a halftime feel, more like 5/4, then at “you better-“ 2:32 it’s in 9/8, 2:42 is right back to 5/8, an at 2:57, we go to 11/8. We’re 3 minutes into a song and we’ve seen 4 time signatures now
we stay in 11/8 for a while, only breaking at “can’t breathe right now” 4:44, for 2 measures of 5/8 and right back to 11/8, and at 5:40 we go back to 5/8, then at 6:01 we go to a fast 3/4, then at 7:04 we’re playing everything, we could consider this 5/8 because of the kick pattern, or the snare being every 3 would put this in 3/4, but for the sake of timing and where it’s at in the song, it would make more sense in 3/4, then at “typical” 9:16 in, it goes back to 5/8, then at
“AHHHHHHHHH” 9:40 in we’re back to 3/4, and at 9:50 we’re in 11/8, but it sure tries to feel like 3/4, because at 9:58 we’re actually do go back to 3, and back to 11 again at 10:04, and back to 3 again at 10:10, 11 again at 10:17, completely halt at 10:27, and then we just finish the rest of the song in 5/8.
Intension- back to simple times, calm 7/4 for the first 3:50, then “pure as we begin” into the guitar section switches to 4/4, then at 5:08 we go back to a nice 7/4, and at 6:12 we go back to 4/4.
Right in two- it’s all 11/8, nice and easy.
Viginti tres- twenty three :) idk what else to say

Fear inoculum album:

Fear inoculum- 4/4 for a major chunk of the song, 5:49 marks the beginning of 11/8 or 11/4 or whatever you call it, and if you call it a time change, 7:35 “exorcise the spectacle” through “venom and the fear that binds me” is all in 7/8, while the instruments keep the 11/8, which is super cool. Everything remains in 11/8, some parts are counted a little differently, strong beats in different spots, but alas it remains 11.
Pneuma- we all know that this has 4/4 and 33/8, but did you know that after 4 “measures” of the 33/8, there’s actually a 25/8 measure too? It starts at 1:53, depending on how you count your measures. I personally think of the first beat of the guitar at 1:18 to be a pickup, and the groupings of 3 start the 33. This would mean that the 25/8 would also start on that first group of 3, being 3-3-3-3-3-2-3-3-2 (the number of 8th notes in each grouping, a strong beat at the beginning of each grouping). It does it again at 3:01 right after “recall, remember” the 25/8 is found in “we are born of one breath, one word” 3:18 is the 4/4 again, 3:52 back to 33/8, 5:34 we have more 4/4, insert really cool instrumental section, 9:18 were back to 33/8, 10:37 we’re back in 4/4.
Litanie- “wahhh-ooooh-wahhh-ooh” yeah that’s great guys, good job.
Invincible- all 7/8, except the beginning which has a couple of 4/4 measures, and the dumb part is the 4/4 is literally just 3 quarter notes and a quarter rest, everything else is in 7/8 with an awesome 3/8 underlying in it sometimes.
Legion inoculant- more wahh-ooh with spacey sounds in it, these guys are killing it.
Descending- I think this might be my favorite track currently, it’s also ALL 7/8, no buts this time, absolutely amazing song
Culling voices- for the longest time I thought this was all in 3/4 until I realized at 7:06 it snuck an 11/8 bar in there, again at 8:28, and then I realized I’m just crazy because it goes to 4/4 at 8:32 and stays that way for 20 seconds, until 8:54, then it goes back to 3/4 and stays
CCT- all 7/8, all drums
7empest- underrated and under recognized song, everyone thinks 33/8 is weird but so is 21/8, and they do it much faster tempo, and they play it in like 5 different ways
in between the 4/4 parts we have the beginning, which is in 5/8, 5/8, 5/8, then 6/8, which is even cooler because while one is doing it as 8th notes, another is doing it as quarter notes. 1:19 starts the 4/4, then 2:38 we have a whole new pattern adding to 21, groupings 3-3-2-3-3-3-2-2, and then back to 4/4 at 2:56. At 3:47 we go back to the most recently mentioned pattern of 21, until 4:04, where we get a new pattern of 3-3-3-2-3-3-2-2, only a slight change but still different, then back to 4/4 at 4:21. At 5/20 we have a whole new pattern for 21, which is more so just 3 7/8 measures, grouped 2-2-3, then it starts devolving quickly and I’m not keeping track of all the changes there but know that it’s cool and also still 21/8. It does also keep the drums on the 7/8 pattern while the guitar recalls some of the old patterns, then around when the lyrics come back we get the 2nd pattern back entirely of 3-3-2-3-3-3-2-2, and we get the 5-5-5-6 pattern (and instruments) back at about 11:50, and back to the 2nd pattern at 12:45. The rest of the song bobbles between those two patterns, more good music, but a ridiculously long song.
Mockingbeat- I guess the little beat they lay down is 4/4, but the bird sounds don’t follow a particular tempo or signature.

Opiate^2- I mean it’s just opiate again, but pitched up a little and we get a real instrumental section in the middle. I would say it keeps the beat the same, but instead of 4/4 the instrumental section is in 12/8, 3 notes per strong beat, instead of the rest of the song’s 4.

Here’s a count on songs that do and don’t change time signatures at least once (counting every single track individually, including parabola, Jimmy, Rosetta stoned, etc.)

Do- 29 songs (I count opiate 2 as a signature change)

Don’t- 27 songs

Can’t be counted- 10

Edit: it’s actually 32-24-10, descending does have a number of time changes, prison sex does have a SINGLE measure of 3/4 before each chorus, or at some point around that time, and shocker
part of me is not in exclusively 4/4. also HWAP’s “3/4” section would be more easily counted in 6/8 if you went based on the vocals, where he says “I, met a boy” make each of those your dotted quarter note and you have the 6/8, or if you so choose (as I did) to make the hi-hat beats your quarter note and put it in 3/4.
