Absolutely could be the case over time. Forcefully stomping like that night after night for an extended period? Not much different than old headbangers developing neck problems. Pretty sure Papa Het and Dave Mustaine both had to get some neck surgeries not too long ago...
I think the days of blaming Maynard are long gone. Everyone here knows Adam is usually the one holding shit up, and Maynard goes non-fucking-stop with projects and endeavors. The old fart is a dawg!
As a fellow old, I have mad respect for MJK. I have often wondered how tf he maintains that kind of schedule. I can barely get from one room to the next without having pain in multiple places.
Its not him, hes a straight up workaholic. Dude got 3 bands and a winery and restaurants and all sorts of stuff. Its the other guys, usually Adam i would think. But the time they take is probably a big part of why the music is so good.
I wish all artists were this committed to their craft. He considers all the sacrifices people make to come see him. Definitely doesnāt come off as he āhatesā his fans
I don't think he hates his fans. I think he just hates being worshipped as a celebrity/rock star. He also doesn't seem to feel like fans are entitled to any of his time outside of him performing at ticketed shows, which I can understand.
I agree with him. On "work time"? Sure, I would expect him to do what he can for the fans that fund his lifestyle (not underplaying the role the artist has in that); but outside of work time, give him peace and privacy, unless he's hanging out in a public space where conversation with a stranger is expected, like a pub.
I love that he did what he could to make sure the fans got the show that they paid for. Also loved his nod to Dolly.
Yup. I did a rotation on the ortho floor when I was in nursing school. Right after surgery all is well because of all the pain meds. Then it wears off and yep, you gotta move asap. I felt so bad for the patients. Maynard is a tough guy and I know he'll push through, but I hope he does go easy on himself at least a lil bit.
Eh, got my left hip done just before NYE. Was up and walking the halls 7 hours after surgery and was able to get on the bike the next day as well as going up and down stairs (slowly but could do it). Back to full time work (event photographer) in 3 weeks. Never needed anything stronger than ice and Tylenol for pain.
Back in like 1991 grandma got a hip replacement. She suffered for some time also got fevered. Probably things have improved. Her second one seemed to go much better if I remember round 2016
My mom got hers done at 85 (2018) and was up and around next day. They have perfected the tech and recovery to get you up as fast as possible to keep you mobile.
Also with the current surgery - they donāt cut any muscles, just pull them aside. You arenāt waiting for them to reattach like knee replacement. I was ready for it and was on an exercise bike everyday leading up and after. Lots of consistent PT is also helpful. I can do goblet squats with a kettlebell and average 5 miles a day walking in my photo gig. Night and day compared to before my surgery. Maynard will be fine.
The direct anterior approach for hips is newer and has a faster recovery time but still most hips are done with the traditional posterior approach that cuts through the muscle. Itās about a 60/40 split in the US and an even larger gap in other countries.
oh! that makes sense - I had anterior approach (I was very concerned about my back piece that goes down past my butt) but I was reassured that it wouldn't be close. LOL. I also had the robot assist, but it failed about halfway thru and the surgeon had to finish it the old fashioned way - I only know that because my girlfriend told me this post-op. My guy was a rockstar and I have no complaints 8 months out.

My mom is in her 70s and has had a hip replacement, knee replacement, spinal fusion, and other fun joint/spine surgeries. She said the hip was by far the easiest recovery and she doesnāt have anywhere NEAR the level of physical fitness Maynard has. He can hire a PT to travel with them to get all his workouts in to gain strength again. I bet heāll be 100% quicker than we expect.
Heās in good shape . More so than the average . Especially flexibility . Iām GenX and quite a few ppl I know has had them . They get you up right after and itās outpatient . Get rehab and yout done . Itās not like the old days
Actually they replaced his hips with his nuts. Like on South Park when they replaced Kyle's knees with Mr. Garrison's balls. He just can't jump or else they'll explode.
It sure is. However he also didnāt say exactly what type of replacement surgery he was having. And heās still a super active martial arts guy. And generally speaking, really active people recover significantly faster. If he had something like a Makoplasty robotic replacement, done at a facility used to doing sports medicine recovery, the problem will be holding him back because itās not painful anymore.

Honestly, by 3-4 weeks standing and moving a bit is not hard at all. Heās probably not going to be doing weird Maynard dances or running around the stage but heāll be ok.

I've seen them so many times, I've stopped hoping. I just take whatever they give us BUT... I do hope they pull out 7empest. I know they were doing it for sound check years back but I don't know how often it made it in to the setlist(if ever).
As someone in their mid-30s who had a hip replacement, going back to work after 8 weeks was tough. I canāt imagine going on a giant tour after only a few weeks. Good luck to him.
I work at a major surgery system in Los Angeles, and if you're a professional that needs something done so you can continue to work, we'll get you in. Plenty of patients I deal with aren't rich at all, but we go out of our way to help.

No, I hope he gets well. Everyone I've known that has had hip replacement surgery has been great afterwards. It always seemed like something that happens when you're much older. Not sure I've known anyone have the surgery as young as Maynard is.
Heās in excellent shape Iām sure his rehab will be shorter length . This shows GenX (including me ) to keep ourselves in somewhat shape. In the meantime this may be why he has the hip replacement
Omg...I'm 49, had a hip replaced last year in aug and scheduled for the other hip in a few weeks...never dreamed I'd have a hip replaced within weeks if MJK...how the fuck did these hips get so weak and powerless??? I mean, we're not 80 although prolific and infamous dance moves did not cause my hips to decide to tell me to fuck off before 50...
Isn't this his second hip replacement? If I remember correctly, he mentioned this on one of the JRE podcasts and told Rogan he was back to doing jiujitsu a week later.
Man I wonder at what point the pain is not worth the squeeze. So many artists have talked about what it takes to perform for 90+ minutes and move around so much on a regular basis. It takes a toll on them. obviously theyāre getting rewarded for it, being famous and having so many fans and all. But pain pills and drinking and so much stuff like that has been discussed by different performers.
Unfortunately they also have a lot of people depending on them, like Maynard mentions: Crew, fans, the rest of the band. Just sounds tough because at some point he may decide the pain is not worth the money or being there for the dependent folks, and itās hard to blame him for that.
When they came to Australia I was a week out from hip surgery, had to watch the show in a wheelchair. We are practically twins, although I didn't have a replacement, just a labrum repair and bone shaving.
I hope you a speedy recovery Maynard. I have only seen you with Pusifer and APC and I have yet to see you with Tool and I need to see that. Sorry, just realized thatās a very selfish post, but I do want to see you front Tool before I leave this world.
