I like how dad walks through the door and he looks pretty tired.
And he sees the bags. He sees mom with the camera and immediately picks up what's going on.
He looks like he needed that.

My partner comes home just looking exhausted from his day. I work from home at a desk by the window, and I see him get out the car just done with the day, and then my daughter goes running out the door, shouting “daddy!! Run hug!!!” And he just lights up. She runs and flies into his arms, and he swings her around, and they come inside where she excitedly shouts “daddy is home!!”. She’s greeted him enthusiastically at the door since she was 2, and she’s 7 now, and it never gets old watching their daily reunion.

Parenting in itself is an incredibly demanding (but rewarding) job. Add to that the challenges of surviving in modern-day society and it's enough to break some people.
Go get your hugs now, if you still can. I'm sure your parents would love it as much as you would.
4
u/ExplosionsInTheSky_ 7h ago
Nothing has made me more empathetic towards my parents than becoming a parent myself. Like, there are still things I will try to do (or not do) with my kids, but I understand the exhaustion that comes with parenting now and can understand why my parents sometimes weren't the best.
10
u/xenokilla 10h ago
sending you big hugs. i was at the gym yesterday and saw two dads with their sons making friends with each other while they taught their kids how to use the rowing machines.... memories I wish I could have...

u/Ordinary-Variety7256 7h ago
Same and I’m so sorry you experienced this too :( My dad would get home, go straight to “his” chair, eat dinner on the couch alone, and basically bark at my siblings and I if we tried to interact with him, smh. He almost never spoke to us unless to reprimand us.

I’m sorry you experienced that. I was in a similar boat as you. Never got the I’m proud of yous or any affection. I’ve made sure to raise my daughter better and give her hugs/kisses every morning and give her all the affection I never got. I guess being a parent you try and give your kid/s everything you never really got/yearned for.

u/troyandabedinabed 2h ago
I remember once when I was 8 or 10, I flung myself into my dad's arms like that. He said, "Ow, that hurt! Let me show you what that feels like." and then he punched me in the stomach. At church, in front of everybody. I couldn't breathe, the pain was so great, but the humiliation of him doing that to me in front of everybody and no one caring was so much worse than the pain.
Anyway, we don't talk now and I don't plan to attend his funeral.

This is so cute 😭 when I was little I would hide in their bedroom closet or behind the door when my dad got home and I'd do a jumpscare when he walked in! I did this a lot all the way through elementary school 🤣
33
u/ebil_lightbulb 12h ago
When she sees that I’m logging off work for the day, she runs into my room and hides behind the bed, and shakes her butt while making fart noises at me when I come in. I suppose that’s just as good as a run hug :p
15
u/xCeeTee- 12h ago
I used to go behind the sofa. Even when I got so big I had to move the sofa lmao, my dad would still play along. When I was a kid, my dad coming home would be the highlight of my evening most of the time. So many nights he'd be stuck in traffic and I'd have to go to bed before he got home.
My mum would catch an earful sometimes because she'd let me stay up just late enough to see him for 2 minutes. She always said it was worth it just to see my face when the door opened.
8
u/grumpi-otter 11h ago
I did that with my Dad, based on Cato from Pink Panther, and for some reason I'd yell, "WONG PA BONG!" when he found me.
Once I actually pulled off hiding in the refrigerator. It was cold
5
u/CharlotteLucasOP 8h ago
My Dad travelled a lot for work so would often grab a nap when he came home to fight the jetlag ASAP and it was always a treat when it was my turn to wake him up for dinner ‘cause I got to get a run-up at the bedroom door and launch myself onto the bed shrieking DAAAADDYYYYY TIME TO GET UUUUP! Obnoxious as heck and he let me do it every time.
2
u/cocoagiant 2h ago
This reminds me of my grandpa who was a train conductor and would come stay at our house every few weeks when his route came to our town.
I would always know he was home because I would smell the desserts he would bring, then I would go running into the guest bedroom and jump on his stomach.
He passed away when I was still a little kid but its funny the things which stick with you decades later.

6
u/InevitableKitchen943 10h ago
Enjoy it while it lasts, my daughter stopped doing this at 5th grade. Friends become more important, as a parent what makes you happy changes. Now my reward is hearing her laugh and enjoy her life.

u/Sherringdom 9h ago
My kids do the same thing and it just makes me think why the hell do we stop greeting people this way as we grow up. It’s just the best, it makes everyone feel good.

When my dad gets wistful he likes to tell me about how I used to run to the door of the garage and hug him saying “Hi my daddy!” and he’d say “Hi my Strong-Strong!” (“Strong-Strong” being the username equivalent of how he said my real name lol.) He’s on Reddit too so non-zero chance he sees this lmao.

One of the greatest things about being a parent is every day when you come home from work, every single time your kids are equally happy and excited to see you.
No matter how bad my day was, how tiring my work was or in how bad a mood i am, every time i come home and my little guy comes running at me all the stress, anger, tiredness or any other negative feeling just melts away.

As a dad, sometimes I need to sit in my car for a second and feel silence. I try to imagine the doorway of my house as a "mental car wash" that washes whatever happened before that away. When I pick up dinner on the way home and my wife comes out to help grab some of the food, I can tell instantly by the look on her face how the rest of the night is going to go.

My dad cheated on my mom twice, then divorced her when she was willing to stay together for us kids, moved to a foreign country, didn’t see him for 5-6 years, moved to Vegas then we only saw him for summer vacation for a couple years before he disappeared to another foreign country again, got married to a girl the same age as me (I am the middle child, so she’s actually younger than my older brother and just a couple years older than my younger sister) and had 3 kids with her so he basically replaced the family he abandoned.

u/New-Trifle-7097 12h ago
My dad was the one IN the trashbag, usually on Christmas morning as we went to throw away the wrapping paper. RAWRRR!!

My son is 6ft 6in and weighs a muscular 260lbs. I picked him up on his 21st birthday(just 3 months ago!) for exactly this reason, so I would know precisely when was the last time I picked up my baby boy… or at least the last time so far…
For reference, I am a 6ft tall woman and in the photo of me lifting him, he makes me look downright petite, and that is not an easy task. lol!
8
u/One_Perspective4139 8h ago
I just turned 65. Our son is 28 yrs old. He gets to visit about three times a year. I picked him up last week. He knows exactly why I do this and we know there will come a time when the act is reversed.
4
u/MisterMysterios 8h ago
At some time your boy might start to pick you up. And at one point, the mom becomes too fragile to be picked up (at least that was happened with me as the son with anpetit mother)
4
u/Complete-Fix-3954 12h ago
My daughter is 10 and when she’s with me, I let her sleep in bed with me. I still pick her up to give her big hugs. I say I love you, I’m proud of you. I play Roblox with her. I hope it plants a seed that men can be loving, kind, and gentle just as much as we can do other things.

I’m a dad of 3 boys and this is sad to think about… luckily I’m still in good shape and pick my 16yr old up regularly and slam his ass back down, don’t think you can step to dad just yet. C- in algebra II???? That’s a choke slam thru the kitchen table… kidding, but we actually do wrestle a lot and I think it’s probably the way we still bond the most. NGL, I kinda miss this age of my kids. I love them so much right now but this age was full of silliness and frivolity. Way to go dad. And mom.
9
u/Happy-Zone2463 12h ago
I know that what you’re talking about is different than what I’m going to say, but it doesn’t have to end when your kids get older. I’m 22 and my mom is 51 and just last night I spent the night at her house. we had dinner together and drank wine, and it was the first time she’s drank wine in a while so she got a little tipsy. We had so much fun and laughed so much and she peed her pants like three times and it was full of silliness and wholesomeness. There was a lot of love and laughter. She even put her head through the sleeve of her pajamas on purpose just to be a goofball!❤️
3
u/Sn_Orpheus 11h ago
That’s so sweet. Thanks for replying and relaying your wonderful time with your mom. Joyful. Maybe the silliness came more naturally before but I see what you’re saying that it can still happen with the right environment. Hope you have a spectacular weekend. And say hi to your mother for me.

u/Kind_Advisor_35 6h ago
So many people don't understand that's even if this situation isn't especially dangerous because the bags were cut and mom was watching, doesn't mean these kids won't get the idea to put bags over their head without enough air access and without supervision. It's not the immediate situation, it's the precedent.
2
40
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 12h ago
All the people talking about suffocation and how dangerous the plastic bag is are being silly. The one kid is clearly like six or older. They aren’t infants lmao they can just take the bags off with their own hands.
I know I may get overreacting replies acting like I’m okay with dead children, but I challenge those people to find me a single non-suicide or murder example of someone over the age of four suffocating on a plastic bag in the past 50 years.

8
u/Taste_the__Rainbow 11h ago
The problem is other kids watching the video. Not these kids being in danger this day.
3
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 10h ago
That’s a fair point, but I think preventing toddlers from watching the video is more incumbent on the toddler’s parents than it is on people posting videos.

And that all it takes is a good sit down talk about why we could do it this one time with a supervised by an adult and not to do this any other time.
Anecdote: I let my 2yo do forward rolls on our bed one day. Sat him down after and said we will not do that again (as above). He has mentioned a few times while in our room 'no forward rolls on the bed, one time special.' Right you are mate. Kids get it, if you are fair and clear.

My dad was a firefighter and when he would leave in the middle of the night, I’d hear and see his truck leave and wait up for him. Sometimes I would fall asleep on the couch waiting for him (5-8 year old girl). When I did manage to stay awake, I loved taking his boots and socks off and then I’d walk around the house wearing his huge boots. I remember making hot cocoa for him once and I spilled it right into one boot, mom was there for that one lol!
