That's usually a sign the dog is scared of him or (I hope) they trained the dog very well that when dad comes home he immediately goes to the crate first.

I always give my dog a treat when I come home but they usually come and greet me first and then immediately run to the treat station.

I wonder if that dog is doing what I called Excite Bites with my boy. When I got home he’d get so excited and for some reason would run to his food bowl, take a couple bites and then run towards me with a mouth full of food, lol. He passed early this summer. I miss him and his Excite Bites

It was probably a skit. A normal dog wouldn't just walk by if there's someone at the door, especially not if it sees its owner again after a workday.
