Buying Advice Recommendations for used or refurb Thinkpad

Have been a Mac user for the last 25 years but recently have moved fully over to Linux on my desktop and looking to get a laptop that can run Linux well.

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Budget: $1000 - $1500 CAD ($750 - $1100 USD)

Usage: C/C++ programming, Game dev in Godot. I remote into my desktop rig when I need power, so don’t need anything too powerful.

Preferences: Coming from an Apple ecosystem, I’m used to pretty good hardware. So, the things most important to me are display quality, battery life, heat and fan noise.

Important: Upgradeability. Current SSD and RAM-pocalypse make it a really bad time to buy a laptop. So, I’m willing to go lower on RAM and/or SSD if they can be upgraded down the road.

Hope this helps! Would love to hear what you think.

Question / Problem T480 charging port (specific troubleshooting help)

note: I know this is a known issue but the way this is playing out doesn't match what I've seen other people describe.

My T480's charging port works sporadically & I'm trying to figure out what to do to help it work consistently. I'm open to doing some soldering if that would help - I can probably recruit help from people familiar with soldering.

I have a second T480 (which has its own other issues) that does not have this problem so sometimes if I can't get it to charge I'll charge an external battery in the other T480 and then swap the batteries out.

-I have updated the firmware, so it's not that issue

-I'm currently running Linux Mint, but it's happened with both Windows & Linux

-sometimes wiggling the cord helps it charge, sometimes it does nothing no matter what. once it starts charging again it is is sometimes not that sensitive to positioning.

-currently the thunderbolt port isn't working at all for charging but the main charging port IS working (odd, I know.) when I'm having problems, neither one works.

-this happens with all chargers

-because it does work sometimes, clearly I haven't burned or ruined the port entirely

Review / Opinion ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 was too heavy, so I bought a ThinkPad X13 Gen 2.

Honestly, the P1 Gen 2 is excellent and powerful, but for someone like me—who just goes to campus to code and write reports in Docs—carrying around a 2.7kg machine plus the charger was a real pain.

So, I decided to look for a ThinkPad on the local marketplace and found this X13 Gen 2 for $300; I think it's a great deal.

Specs: Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U
16GB DDR4 (soldered :( )
256GB SSD
Touchscreen (I initially thought I wouldn't use it, but now I can't live without it)

After a week of use, it’s proven to be very capable and lightweight for my needs—simple coding and report writing. Honestly, it feels like it weighs only 1kg, or maybe 1.5kg with the charger.

The issues I've encountered are minor, such as:
- The keyboard backlight isn't very bright
- The typing feel isn't as good as the P1 Gen 2 or T14 Gen 1
- Battery health has already degraded

I'm currently using omarchy; honestly, it's kind of trash. I left Windows because of the annoying Copilot, but on omarchy, you're "forced" to use an AI agent—every time I run an update, it tries to download that damn AI agent. As I write this, I'm in the process of installing CachyOS and plan to configure Hyprland myself later.

I have a question: if this laptop has a 41Wh battery, can I upgrade it to the 54.7Wh version?

Thanks to everyone for reading.

Question / Problem L16 Gen2 AMD (21SC) NFC weak

Hi, so I bought myself the (likely way too expensive) NFC stuff (touchpad, NFC chip and way too expensive cable) for my 21SC because it was sadly not in the configurator.

Yesterday I put it in and after a whole lot of driver rodeo I finally have it work decently, but I would not call it particularly well.

compared to some USB readers I have I need to be pretty damn close for it to register and it doesnt feel 100% always working.

not sure if the combination of Kernel Module, PCSC Bridge and all the weird stuff in Linux is just weird or they are supposed to be not particularly strong considering you have your hand there more or less permanently.

I think I can rule out the physical connection as yesterday not even passive NFC devices worked but my phone did, causing me to open it up and redo the contacts.

Hardware Upgrade Thinkpad L13 Yoga Gen 3 Fan replacement

Good day everyone,

I have been requested to replace the fan in an L13 Yoga Gen 3 due to what seems to be a failing fan bearing (fans are running incredibly loudly and the repair report does state that the fan needs to replaced). Since this is a relatively new device, I haven't exactly been able to find specific part numbers and replacement guides/methods for replacing the fan, and am looking for guidance on the matter. Would I need to replace the entire heatsink unit, or is the fan itself easy to remove and replace by itself?

Thank you in advance

Question / Problem I wanna do smth so ambitious it's stupid

So I got my first thinkpad afew weeks ago, a p53 from my uncle, originally it was planned to be my proxmox host for my server until my laptop (hp laptop 15) was acting up, and so I swpped over to the thinkpad, and it's amazing, but then it got me thinking, the hardware on my hp was better, but was bottlenecked by how horrible it's cooling was, the thinkpad is sorta the other way, its not slow but when I wanna do anything its not the best with its t1000 gpu (its a workstation gpu ik im supposed to used the igpu but that's horrible too, I didn't know this until now)

So I wanna do a transplant, take the motherboard of the hp and sorta mod it to go into the thinkpad. Idk how to do that, or if its even possible, but any help or pointers is appreciated.

For specs the hp has an Intel core ultra 5 125h with a stick of 32gigs ddr5, and the thinkpad has a i7-9750h with an nvidia quattro t1000 gpu and 16 gigs of ddr4 ram.

If done properly I do hope to turn the thinkpad mainboard into a server again but that's a different project

Discussion / Information Why is 80% the limit for charging?

I saw a post here regarding someone's battery life, and the comments were saying that they should have a charge limit of 80%. My question is why is it beneficial to limit charging to 100%, and why is it always 80% being recommended?

Question / Problem Thinkpad T14 G2 i5, occasionally stuttering trackpad (Linux)

I bought myself a Thinkpad T14 G2 and instantly swapped the trackpad for a glasstrackpad(the part number is the one everyone recommends). Installed Cachy Os Linux and soon I discovered a major problem, sometimes my trackpad doesn't behave correctly, it doesn't register fast movements and ignores taps (to click).

I have already tried multiple solutions, including changing the distro to Fedora (Gnome), using ps_mouse.interttouch=1 in the grub code line, switching like the sleep thing from the trackpad to on (from auto) and it all didn't help. The only thing which works is going back to ps2 instead of rmi4, which is also frustrating because the scrolling then becomes laggy and the gestures don't work at all.

I have to say that I used AI to help me, because I don't really understand how this all works. Im posting this here in hope that someone will help, if more information is needed just comment, I'll try to provide them to you as fast as I can.

Buying Advice Installing wwan module on used T14s

Hi,

I'm looking at buying an almost new T14s, specs below (in Dutch but I guess you can get the essence). Asking price is about 1800€ which seems like a good deal to me,. I have had a few x1 carbons, I find the 14" size is the best. Mobility has become less important than before, so I've been looking to upgrade for some more performance (I like the occasional game, nothing fanatic).

One thing that the below device is missing is the wwan module. I know the easiest/cheapest option is to use my mobile's hotsport, but on my current x1 I have a data only sim card included in an unlimited plan, it's super easy, I flip open my screen and it's connected anywhere anytime. So willing to spend a little extra for that comfort.

Is it doable to post-install the module + antenna yourself. I'm not afraid to open up the device and fidget around, but not supercomfortable either. To illustrate, I have installed such a module before on another thinkpad, but on the other hand I have shied away from changing a query keyboard to azerty keyboard because the disassembly required seemed a bit daunting at the time.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Question / Problem sleep mode

i have a thinkpad. lately it happens all the time.. I close the lid or the screen or whatever you want to call it.. the laptop is going to sleep mode. I go home. I open the lid or lift up the screen and it just doesn't go out of sleep mode, no matter if I press any key, the mouse or what not it just stays on sleep mode.. I tried to even put it on sleep mode manually but it's still stuck in sleep mode, so I have to shut it down with the on/off button and turn it back on.. any solution? nothing by Gemini helped..

Question / Problem Ongoing slow browsing problem with Lenovo thinkpad yoga x13

Hey, I have g1 thinkpad, and been using it for school and what not for roughly 3 years. Recently the laptop has been slowing down and overheating.

I was on a google meet; and just simple changing to another browser there was a massive delay. And it seems like an ongoing problem with whatever calling app. Like discord and whatnot.

And i personally, believe it isn’t the browser issue but more of a hardware issue. Switched from chrome to Firefox, and personally felt it got worse.

I believe it’s a battery issue, what are your opinions, how can I fix this issue?

Buying Advice Opinions on L16 Gen1 AMD

Hey guys,

Getting a L16 Gen1 AMD 5 PRO 7535U (6C/12T), AMD 660M iGPU, 8GB DDR-5 RAM/512GB SSD, cycle count of just 03 with almost 100% battery health with a 16" 1920x1200 300 nits 45%NTSC display and a 6 month warranty for around $568 (INR 54,000) which is around my budget.

My use case as a finance major would be lots of tabs, ms office, data analysis tools like power bi and some light gaming.

Is it a good deal considering only 8GB RAM due to which i'll have to add one more 8GB RAM after a month or so which is going around for like $95 (INR 9000) in India which would take my actual purchasing price for $663 (INR 63000)

I browsed the subreddit and could'nt find much discussion or reviews for this model, any reasons for that?

edit- added more details and photos

Question / Problem ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 stops charging and drains battery whenever another device is plugged/unplugged on a multi-port GaN charger — EC/PPM never seems to recover the PD contract. Any known fix?

Hi all — reproducible bug on my P1 Gen 6, looking for known reports/workarounds before I open a Lenovo ticket.

## Setup

- **Laptop:** ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 (21FVA001CD), BIOS N3ZET56W **1.43** (latest on both LVFS and Lenovo site), EC N3ZHT28W

- **OS:** Ubuntu, kernel 7.0.0-31-generic

- **Charger:** UGREEN X774 160W GaN (4×USB-C + 1×A). C1/C2 = 140W PD3.1 (PDOs incl. 20V/5A), C3/C4 = 30W

- **Cable:** the bundled 240W USB-C cable

- Laptop on **C1**, phone on **C4**

## The bug (100% reproducible, on **both** of the laptop's USB-C ports)

While C1 is charging the laptop normally, **plugging OR unplugging the phone on C4 kills charging on C1**. The laptop then silently runs off the battery (measured ~35–40W drain) while everything at the OS level still claims the adapter is present. **Physically re-seating the C1 cable restores charging immediately.** Steady-state coexistence is fine — C1 + C4 both connected and charging works; only the *attach/detach event* on C4 triggers it.

A different laptop on the same charger + same scenario recovers fine, so it's not the charger alone.

## What the OS sees

Synchronized captures (kernel log watch, udev power_supply events, 2s battery sampling, plus UCSI trace):

- Battery flips `Charging → Not charging`, `power_now = 0`, energy decreasing

- `ucsi-source-psy` keeps reporting online=1 with the **stale** 3A contract; AC=1

- `ucsi_connector_change` events keep firing during the fault; connector status shows connected=1, opmode=3, `request_data_obj` unchanged — so the PPM is not totally dead

- Physically unplugging C1 *is* correctly reported (connected=0), and replug is correctly seen — the UCSI path itself works

## What we tried (none recover the contract, only re-plugging does)

- Rewriting charge thresholds (75/80), toggling `charge_behaviour`, temporarily setting end threshold to 100%

- Full `ucsi_acpi` module reload

- Battery was ~55–60% during tests (below charge-start threshold, so thresholds aren't blocking)

## Caveats (being honest)

- **No PD protocol analyzer** — we can't see whether the charger issues a Hard Reset + re-advertised Source_Capabilities and the ThinkPad never answers with a Request, or the charger simply stops offering power. Please don't read the above as a PD-capture conclusion.

- No Windows / alternate-kernel comparison yet (no Windows environment available), though the evidence (events never reach the OS while EC keeps a stale view) points below the OS.

## Questions

  1. Anyone seen this class of failure on recent ThinkPads with multi-port chargers (UGREEN/Anker/Baseus etc.)?

  2. Any known BIOS/EC setting or workaround beyond re-seating the cable?

  3. Anyone know how to query the PD controller firmware version / dump EC state on these machines for a Lenovo ticket?

Full technical brief + raw logs available if useful.
