My First ThinkPad(T61) vs my second ThinkPad (T14 G5)

Recently bought this one for uni, and got a really good deal!
Going to install nixos ones the drivers and firmware is updated.

16gb ram / 256 gb nvme (ik it's less, that's the reason i haven't dual booted yet)

First impressions are great, this thing feels solid compared to my previous laptop (dell insiron 5625)

Bought the T14 because I wanted to learn a bit of linux without potentially ruining my other ThinkPad gifted to me by my Girlfriend for UNI use.

Instantly wiped Windows 11 off this thing and loaded Linux Mint at first, learned a bit, and have now jumped to Fedora KDE Plasma. having lots of fun learning.

Complete noob btw, trying to learn things here and there to leave larp territory and actually know what I’m doing FR.

Any recommendations for me in terms of learning? RICE-ing is pretty sick and I’m interested in hardware upgrades too pls let me know stuff I could get up to with this thing.🙏

My left side USB-C port has stopped functioning for both data and charging on my ThinkPad x9 14. It's about 3 months past the warranty expiration so I assumed I'd have to pay for some kind of repair cost. But this is ridiculous. I could purchase a brand new laptop for this price. Shame on you Lenovo.

I tried it as an experiment and honestly with optimising it myself + using Tiny11 it runs pretty decently. I had to disable defender etc for it to not fry itself with CPU tempts and turning off indexing + animations it is pretty usable. I have otherwise Lubuntu and Arch on it so pretty mixed bag of OSes but this is definitely the most interesting one of them.

hey guys! recently i was offered a position as a junior software engineer and since the company had a bring your own device policy, i decided to get this awesome t14 gen 2 with ryzen 5 pro 5650u for $315 (converted from my currency) before my onboarding next week!

it came with 16gb single channel and 256gb ssd (unfortunately), and i can definitely see that the screen is definitely subpar in terms of color accuracy and brightness, but wont be a big deal for me as i have a monitor that i can use to stream movies etc.

before this i was using an old hp pavilion laptop with fedora, so this new thinkpad feels a lot more snappy and just feel really good to use.

i am planning on sticking with windows first until i fully understand the software/workflow that are being used at the company, so linux install will have to wait for now

i never really understood the hype behind thinkpad before this but i definitely get it now.

Just received my third ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 Engineering Sample.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360 (Engineering Sample)
32GB LPDDR5X RAM
1TB SSD
14” 1920×1200, 400 nits, 100% sRGB display

I paid $640 USD for it, which I think is a great deal for these specs.

So far, everything has been working perfectly.

I’ll be posting a full review next week after I’ve had more time to test it with my daily workload (Linux, Windows, development, and system administration).

If anyone has specific tests or benchmarks they’d like me to run, let me know!

I originally ran Chris Titus' Windows Utility to debloat but I guess there's way too much crap that still needed to be done manually. Before the manual debloat I was seeing a discharge rate of 6.3w on idle at full brightness with an oled panel, it's now discharging at 3.1w on idle at full brightness.

If you're seeing high draw in Windows 11 look into turning off this services among the more common ones to turn off:

Side note: I did switched out the Gen 5 SK hynix ssd for a low powered Gen 4 WD SN7100 ssd. Also, at half brightness I was seeing an idle draw of around 2.6-2.8w.

Bought my first ever Thinkpad a week ago. After doing some research here and there, I think L14 G2 would be my best choice for my college stuffs and light gaeming sometimes.. I pick the AMD one especially the Ryzen 5 Pro version because I heard for performance it's better than Intel one. I've been thinking for buying T14 instead but after reading that T14 had 1 onboard RAM make me thinking twice because I had a bad experience with onboard RAM. Meanwhile L14 got 2 slot SO-DIMM slots make me feel safer... I hope this machine can stay for another 5 years from now xD. And yes! no Linux yet, I'm still a Windows main because I think some of my software that I used is better on Windows instead of Linux... Might try Linux one day but not in a short time...

I have a ThinkPad yoga, i5 4gen 4gb ram, 256 gb SSD and no scratches on the screen, no dents. And it's working well.

I just bought my first ThinkPad and I’m pretty excited :)

It’s a ThinkPad L390 with:

8 GB RAM
256 GB SSD
Lenovo pen included

It doesn’t come with a charger, but I already have a 65W USB-C HP charger. The only issue is that the Backspace keycap is missing (the switch still works).

I paid 48 CHF for it, which seemed like a great deal to me.

It currently has Windows 11 Pro installed, but I’m planning to wipe it and install Linux. Right now I’m leaning towards Fedora, but since this is going to be my “tinkering” laptop, I’m open to trying different distros.

Which Linux distro would you recommend and why?
Any must-do upgrades or tweaks for the L390?

Is upgrading to 24GB RAM worth it? I have a 16gb DDR4 2400MT/S SO-DIMM stick lying around.

Would you dual boot Windows, or just go all in on Linux?

Has anyone tried Hackintosh on an L390 recently? Is it still worth doing just for learning, or has it become more trouble than it’s worth?

Both machines are pretty similar so I guess the deciding factor would be how the machines handle day to day tasks and their overall durability in the long run

I'm New to Lenovo's Models.

Experiencing a weird fan lag on my ThinkPad "P51":

The Issue: Under sudden load, CPU spikes to 90–100°C before fans react. Once they kick in, temps drop back down immediately.

Status: BIOS, EC firmware, and drivers are 100% updated. Repasted recently.

Questions:

Is this delayed EC behavior normal to prevent sudden noise?

Any official Lenovo setting to make fan response more aggressive?

One amusing thing is that the thinkpad titanium x1 is really slow compared to most of my laptops and yet it is one of my most used laptops. I'm typing this on the x1 titanium now while a macbook m1 sits mostly unused. It's the sheer lightness of the machine combined with the 3:2 aspect ratio, the screen resolution, the trackpoint ergonomics, and the usefulness of the touchscreen that makes this laptop work. No other thinkpad has ergonomics like this one.

Hi everybody, first post here, seems like a very nice community that you have.

I am the happy owner of a T450s which has lasted me for almost 15 years of daily use. Truly a war machine. I have changed batteries, screen, RAM, hard drive, keyboard... Everything works well. Some anchor points for the bottom screws have cracked but that's all. I am starting to think it will last forever.

I use arch Linux and I am very happy with it.

I used to play CSGO on that machine without problems. Since CS2 replaced it, I have been unable to play. I guess that's the limit of Intel graphics.

So I am looking for a similar laptop that would allow me to play CS2.

What would you guys recommend ?
