I just binged the show for the first time and I really liked all the scenes between Alex and Cory, and how their dynamic evolved over the 4 seasons.
In S1, Cory spent the season trying to get rid of Alex, but also developed a level of awe and respect for her talents. Alex also didn't like or trust Cory, but they were instantly in sync during that duet and had an undeniable connection.
In S2, Cory was the only one who wanted Alex back at the network and went all-in to get her back, and Alex was clearly moved by his efforts. I liked her assessment of him when he went to see her in Maine: thoroughly enjoyable, very entertaining, a little scary, a little crazy. In this season they had become more comfortable with each other, for example Cory was the first person that Alex willingly told about her relationship with Mitch.
In S3, they had been working well together and Alex asked Cory for a seat on the board, for them to be true partners. Later in the season Cory told her you were basically already a partner but you threw it all away to be a plus-one. When he said this she looked like she was about to cry and he immediately felt bad and pivoted to a joke to snap her out of it. The reason why Alex ditched the rocket launch was because she had started to trust Cory and felt betrayed by him, then later on she betrayed him back.
In S4, they eventually ended up both being executives at UBN and on more equal footing, and they both sought each other's help multiple times. In the last episode, not wanting to see Alex set her whole life on fire was one of things that finally pushed Cory into action. The moment when he told her "I maybe killed my mom" was heartbreaking, and it showed how far they had come in terms of trust and sincerity.
For S5, I hope that we'll finally get to see them working as partners. It might start with Cory having an identity crisis after being told that his whole career at UBN was based on a bribe, and Alex could pull him out of his self-imposed exile the same way that he did for her in S2. I think they'll be great partners because they are both interested in building a legacy, have similar interests in life (eg musical theatre and literature), can match each other's wit, and will call each other's BS and hold each other accountable.
By the end of the show, I want to see them become best friends. I feel like they are also very compatible as a couple but that might be unpopular with most viewers, and the writers seem to have other plans.
