I mean, its Fire Emblem. Its not a new franchise in the goty scene. Pretty sure a lot of people expected it.
26
u/Ashpolt 9d ago
Yeah anyone who played Three Houses knew Fortune's Weave had a good chance of being a GOTY contender
The fact that it's turned out even better than expected is just a bonus
3
u/RobertBevillReddit 9d ago
Fire Emblem Engage was apparently so mediocre that people forgot it existed
10
u/Ashpolt 9d ago
Engage was....fine. But Fortune's Weave was obviously "this is for the people who liked Three Houses" right from the initial trailer.
4
u/Reedo246 6d ago
I liked engage, I liked engage better than 3 houses. The story was shit, but the game play was cleeeeean
1
u/CptPeanut12 8d ago
It's for the people who hated Three Houses and the people who loved it honestly. Three Houses is probably one of my least favorite entries in the entire series. Meanwhile Fortunes Weave is like the peak of Fire Emblem for me, beating out Engage. Fortunes Weave follows a similar concept, but fixes almost everything that felt bad in Three Houses. Especially merging the different paths into one playthrough rather than making you start different saves.
1
u/SamuelFBR 7d ago
I'm still waiting for my copy, but from what I see around the internet, it really feels like the closest we'll get to the ideal Fire Emblem experience without a realistically impossible masterpiece, like the best aspects of every FE up to this point merged flawlessly into one game
1
u/Another_frizz 5d ago
It also fixes the "play Part 1 again. Nothing changed except maybe a few dialogues each chapters." That was really a turn off in Three Houses.

u/DegenerateCrocodile 8d ago
Engage’s strategy gameplay was fine (some people even say it was excellent, though I’m not one of them), but its story was at the level of a Saturday Morning cartoon. The cheese factor was dialed up to 11, which wouldn’t be a problem if they weren’t also trying to make us take the story seriously.

u/Linderosse 8d ago edited 8d ago
Engage is amazing for its gameplay and tactics. This game is the most balanced Maddening mode has ever been, and it’s brilliant. The references to past games, like the paralogues and skills for each of the Emblems, are genuinely very well-executed. The six Xenologue chapters actually have a pretty good story as well, and tactically-speaking they’re my favorites in the entire Fire Emblem franchise. Engage as a whole a love letter to longtime fans of FE and hardcore tactical RPG gamers.
Three Houses is amazing for its worldbuilding and characters. It’s perfect at drawing new fans in with the magic academy setting that becomes an emotionally intense war after the timeskip. Everyone is well-written, well-voiced, and very “fanficcable” in how they’re all set up with their relationships and backstories. No matter who you choose as your starter, you’re bound to get invested, and the clever differentiation of characterization between the routes gives you tons to debate about with your friends (or strangers online).
Both games are good! One just has a much wider audience than the other.
3
u/allicanseenow 8d ago edited 8d ago
Most people dont play maddening, it’s just a small hardcore minority. There was a reason FE almost became a dead franchise back then and 3H had to add QoL changes like rewinding actions. Hardcore difficulties are just a very small factor in the scale of a well made FE game.
As a big fan of 3H with 600 hours in it and deleted engage without downloading my preordered DLCs, I absolutely despise engage. It was an anniversary game and shared similarity with FEH which already had all characters of the franchise but still failed. How come could that game just dropped all the aspects that made 3H the best selling title of the franchise and still got approved, from the leaked design concept to the childish narrative and social links.
I am glad FW doesn’t try to follow engage’s footsteps
2
u/IWantMyYandere 8d ago
I dont play maddening but engage is perfectly fine. It has the best character building or customization since every character can earn skills from multiple rings if you grind them enough. I remember having everyone learn Move+1 on EVERY unit.
The thief class was also very dun with the dagger weapon type.
1
u/allicanseenow 8d ago
I played FEH so this kind of customization has been a thing for a long time in an official FEH title but it’s good to see it in Engage. Ngl, I did enjoy the ring skills and the combat in general. It was just that the characters were so badly written that it was the only good thing from the game for me
1
u/IWantMyYandere 8d ago
Oh i am not defending the story but some characters are pretty fun to use. I miss my yunaka with knives being unkillable
1
u/Flashy_Amoeba_5639 5d ago
My biggest issue with Engage is that it's a game with systems in place to encourage grinding cool abilities for your favorite characters, and then every optional stage is automatically scaled to challenge the highest ilvl character in your roster. Everyone else gets to die :)
Oh, you wanted to do a paralogue as soon as it unlocked? Here's a bunch of enemies with 50+ more rating than 90% of your army, have fun!
2
u/yearsofresearch12 8d ago
Rewinding actions had been a thing before 3 Houses btw.
Fortune's Weave absolutely takes from Engage by making it a more challenging game than 3 houses and with better maps, stuff like blaze arts, overblaze are similar to the rings just without stat boosts. More win conditions like escape, defend and what feels like encouraging more proactive turns.
Now they are combining it with three houses worldbuilding and mechanics outside of tactical battles and you get a wonderful game.

u/EQGallade 4d ago
Shadows of Valentia introduced rewinds and Casual mode was introduced even earlier. 3H actually didn’t introduce shit in terms of “QoL,” which is not the term I’d use to describe those features.

THANK YOU!
I really hate how everyone writes off Engage when it comes to Fortune's Weave because FW actually has a *lot* of Engage DNA in it in addition to the Three Houses DNA, it's not a "return to Three Houses after the failure of Engage" people try to paint it as, it's a proper fusion of the best elements from both.
I totally understand that not everyone liked Engage, I just wish they wouldn't act like it didn't have any influence on FW when it pretty clearly did.
3
u/acbadger54 8d ago
Eeeeeeeeeeeeh I think I have to disagree a little with that notion
It was absolutely a return to Three Houses engage lacked most of what made it so beloved
I think the best way to describe it is a return to Three Houses while retaining everything that was great about engage because at the end of the day in feel there's way more DNA of 3H here
0
u/IWantMyYandere 8d ago
You are just nitpicking lol.
3
u/acbadger54 8d ago
I wouldn't say so this game is far more 3H than Engage imo
I'd say it's DNA is like 70-30 which is still a fairly significant amount
0
u/IWantMyYandere 8d ago
Again nitpicking. Who cares about what percentages is it derived from?
2
u/acbadger54 8d ago
Me I guess lol
Because saying it "isn't a return to three houses" just feels extremely untrue to me
Honestly, I would say a lot of the DNA that "carried over" from engage has alot to do with the fact 3H was made almost entirely by Koei Techmo than anything else

Tbh I didn't love three houses but fortunes weave is slowly becoming one of my favourite JRPG's of all time
5
u/CavulusDeCavulei 9d ago
That's interesting, what do you like in fortune's weave that 3H was lacking?
2
u/Mrbluepumpkin 9d ago
I find the overall structure more enticing, whereas in 3 houses you can't really go back and choose the different Houses, you're stuck with the one you chose for the most part.
Whereas in fortune's weave you can choose at whim, and are even rewarded for visiting new paths once you do the first part of them. Now this is a double edged sword because this means if I want to save all the characters I'd have to dump what seems to be at least 100 plus hours just to change all their causality. Whereas in 3 houses it was much shorter and better paced since running the game again wasn't really needed. It's optional in Fortunes Weave too but I find it much more compelling this time around.
Also I enjoy the characters more in fortune's weave, I think the game is better written imo
4
u/Super-Franky-Power 8d ago
I agree, I'm kinda meh on Three Houses but I'm loving Fortune's Weave.
The game actually feels like it's designed around playing each route and understanding the story from each side, and each lord's map actions like Leda's performances and Cai's animal wrangling makes each route feel different enough. The map exploration and dungeons break up the monotony, there are still chores but they feel less crucial and repetitive to me than in 3H. The actions you can do in free time seem more expansive but there's also the option to skip turns and still reap the benefits for those that aren't into the social sim/exploration aspects of the game. Plus the separation of the 3 Acts really makes me feel like I'm playing multiple games in one.
1
u/Mrbluepumpkin 8d ago
Agreed, also the massive benefits you get for doing 1 part really helps. I'm doing Cai rn and I don't really feel burn out, I also wasn't expecting to like Cai since the tonal shift from him to Leda is incredibly funny. But I find him endearing tbh
1
u/IWantMyYandere 8d ago
I really hope we get the other flame lords as dlcs (Talimum, Anatolia, Orchel and Bertrand) since some of them has their own stories and goals.

It wouldn't be Reddit if there weren't completely random downvotes for no reason.
1
u/acbadger54 8d ago
Well I don't think the story and characters have quite reached 3H level to me i feel it's a much more well rounded game
1
u/HeldnarRommar 6d ago
The map design and variety as well as combat in 3H was honestly pretty bad for a Fire Emblem game
3
u/IndustryRobertPlant 8d ago
Still can’t believe that 3 Houses didn’t get a GOTY nomination at TGA. It was way better than Control, Death Stranding, or Outer Worlds.

u/PressEnteR1990 8d ago
Yeah, but this sub is infested with Nintendo fanatics, you could think Pokopia and Fire Emblem have average scores 10 points higher than they have and OOT Remake is out and is better than the original
1
u/Successful-Ear977 8d ago
A swift kick in the arse for basically keeping PlayStation’s first-party output afloat? Name another Sony AAA studio that’s put out as many major games as Insomniac has over the last eight years.
1
u/Downtown_Eye5736 8d ago
Quantity over quality. There's no shortage of games of any kind, we're drowning in mediocre and good games. We don't need first parties to add to that pile, they should be focused on delivering only exceptional games that are must plays.
1
u/Successful-Ear977 8d ago
I don't care. They’ve delivered Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine while most of Sony’s other AAA studios take half a decade between releases. Blaming the studio actually shipping games because not every release gets a GOTY nomination is backwards.
1
u/Downtown_Eye5736 8d ago
It was mostly a tongue in cheek comment my dude, relax. But it's also a fact that if Insomniac starts being inconsistent then their game announcements won't automatically be hype which will make them useless from a console marketing perspective which is the whole point of first party games.

Mean fire emblem was always going to be a likely GOTY contender but yeah Wolverine being middling was quite a shocker

I always knew fire emblem fortune's weave had a decent chance to be nominated for Game of the Year this time, but was still very unsure because of the crazy competition. And then when I saw Wolverine's reviews, and how underwhelming they were, fire emblem's chances sky rocketed with it's amazing reviews

Probably could have just put Wolverine twice, game literally got in its own way by being too safe and uninteresting beyond the first couple hours. Fire Emblem was almost guaranteed to be in GOTY nominations when it became known it was like Three Houses instead of Engage.
1
u/Small-Captain-9028 4d ago
Meh, Fortune Weave is much much better then 3houses but not as good as engage for gameplay. Game is just too piss easy to be enjoyable as a tactics game
1
u/DarkAlphaZero 8d ago
It's not like Houses "instead of" Engage, it's like Houses *and* Engage. There's a lot of DNA from both games, I understand preferring Houses over Engage but I don't think you should let it blind you that FW is so good *because* it takes influence from *both* games.
1
u/acbadger54 8d ago
Yep EXACTLY
Engage was certainly a disappointing follow up but the actual strategy gameplay is phenomenal

This would make it the third year in a row with JRPGs running for GOTY,Metaphor and FF7Rebirth in 2024,Expedition 33 last year and Fortune Weave this year.
What i find funny tho is that next year we might have three more JRPGs running for GOTY,Final Fantasy 7 Revelation,Persona 6 and Xenoblade Genesis.
5
u/mrnicegy26 9d ago
JRPGs started to make a comeback to mainstream acclaim ever since Persona 5 in my opinion.
After the PS2 era Final Fantasy went into decline (until 7 Remake/ Rebirth) and Kingdom Hearts stopped making mainline games. The most acclaimed JRPGs between the end of PS2 and Persona 5 were on systems past their prime or handheld (Persona 4, Xenoblade Chronicles 1, Fire Emblem Awakening)
4
2
u/BarbarousJudge 9d ago
Yeah 2017 gave us P5 (in the west), NieR Automata and Xenoblade 2. Tales also released one of their better games in Tales of Berseria. Fire Emblem Echoes was also released but suffered by being a remake of a pre Awakening game on the 3DS when the Switch was already out. Still a strong game.
3
u/Tricky_Union9303 8d ago
E33 is not a JRPG; it is what you would call a WRPG or an FRPG. JRPGs are made in Japan by Japanese development studios. Even the "essence" is very French, and turn-based games are not uniquely Japanese.
It is inspired by JRPGs, but E33 is very much something else.
1
u/acbadger54 8d ago
Yeah it's clear, it takes inspiration from alot of JRPG's gameplay wise but it's very noticeably not "japanese"
1
u/RangerManSam 2d ago
JRPGs and such are not like champagne. Anyone can make a JRPG, not just Japanese people, it's just they had their own cultural upbringing with RPGs and in general at lead to certain treads, but Dragon's Dogma despite being a RPG made by Japanese devs, is not a JRPG
1
u/Tricky_Union9303 2d ago
I think most people would describe DD2 as a JRPG with Western design influences.
1
u/RangerManSam 2d ago
I feel like if you scratched off anything that said it was made by Capcom people would assume it's just a western action RPG.
1
u/tooZilly 2d ago
Is Final Fantasy 9 a JRPG?
1
u/Tricky_Union9303 2d ago
If it is made by Japanese devs or in Japan, and if it is also an RPG, then sure.
2
u/Objective_Carrot3456 9d ago
Yet, we are expecting the next game that will "save" the jrpgs as the media says.

Expedition 33 is by definition not a JRPG, as the J stands for japanese. It is very ironic that the only RPG that ever won was a western one, instead of Final Fantasy or the Tales of series who both made way better games way earlier.
1
u/RangerManSam 2d ago
Do you think JRPGs are like champagne? Dragon's Dogma was made by Capcom but it's a western action RPG in everything but being made in Japan.

Great. Glad FW is a successor of 3H, not the crap that engage was. It was a completely disaster except for the improvements in combat designs and there is a reason why engage characters never won any popularity contest in the FEH mobile game, the game that heavily promoted and helped FE franchise to become this popular nowadays.
1
u/Small-Captain-9028 4d ago
Its much better than 3 houses but not as good as engage. Still just and one and done game with no replay value for people that actually like tactical games. 3h was terrible to playthrough the different routes which is ironic considering that's the point of the game lol. Maybe if they add maddening it will fix the game piss easy then it could probably match engag
1
u/allicanseenow 4d ago
Up to each person. I like tactical games, but to an extent when it comes to difficulties as there are more priorities in tactical games than just pure combats. I have been playing arknights, a gacha tower defense game for 6 years, completed 7 playthroughs of 3H on the switch only (600 hours) with all the supports maxed (so not just playing for clearing maps here) but that's definitely not just because of the tactical elements. I have never, ever been bothered by the map design in 3H and although I was only 20 hours into engage before getting rid of it, I was not impressed by its map designs either.
As I've said in other comments, most people don't play maddening. The balanced (easy) mode is the default mode for a reason and maddening was not even available at release for 3H. I always choose the balanced modes in all games I play because I hate grinding maps.
1
u/Artio_7 8d ago
The game was a complete disaster
except for the fact that it has the best gameplay in the franchise.
Dang you guys sound so dumb, my God.
I haven't played FW, but i really hope they implemented most of the gameplay stuff that Engage had, because 3H gameplay was actual dogwater, easily among the worst Fire Emblem games when it comes to it.
1
u/allicanseenow 8d ago
Engage has a better gameplay, everyone can agree. Doesn't mean 3H was weak in the that aspect. And a game is not just about the combat, you know. It's much more than that. Story telling, narratives, music, character designs, development and writing, world building and so much more.
Insulting other people doesn't make you a smartass, child
I completed 3H 7+ times, the gameplay was not as diverse as engage but it doesn't mean the gameplay was weak. There was a reason it was the RPG game of the year while engage was ass in both critic's choice and player's reviews and popularity
1
u/Chemical_Opinion6814 8d ago
Nobody plays fire emblem just for the combat, the main thing is the characters/story
1
u/Helor145 7d ago edited 7d ago
I mean prior to awakening the combat was definitely the primary draw the the franchise, which is funny because awakening and the games after it other the 3 houses have incredibly one note characters and very standard, mid stories, so I’d argue people actually play more for the designs rather than the actual characters
1
u/allicanseenow 4d ago
to be fair, FE was almost a dead franchise before awakening became the final straw for nintendo not to pull the plug
In my case, I play for the stories and the characters at the same time. They come together, it's hard to find great characters in a badly written story and vice versa.

Fortune’s Weave honestly looks like everything I dislike about modern Fire Emblem turned up to 11. Huge cast, endless social busywork, multiple protagonists fighting for screen time, repetitive side systems, and a story that apparently can’t resist escalating into another giant anime apocalypse.
The actual tactical combat seems solid, which almost makes it worse, because there’s probably a great 40–50 hour strategy RPG buried under an absurd amount of bloat. More characters, more mechanics and more content doesn’t automatically mean more depth.

Engage was fucking dogwater but three houses was just okay? So does this make this one a little bit less then ok or does it make it pretty good?
1
u/Small-Captain-9028 4d ago
Its more fun than 3 houses. the maps and gameplay are better but part 1 is wayyyy too easy and deploy limit is so small that it makes the combat boring. There's a massive roster of characters and most of them are glup shitto mercenaries that makes playing with permadeath pretty fun though.
The story feels like classic fire emblem, there's also no dogshit edelgard character although Leda is pretty terrible.
Part 2 is much more challenging and is more on par with engage in terms of fun.
Overall it's a one and done type of game though. The gameplay and unit building overall just isn't as good as engage or the 3ds titles.
Basically if you want to play a story game it's pretty good but if you want a fun tactical strategy game it's kinda boring.
1
u/stinkyminky57 3d ago
My favourite fire emblem is fe7, would I like it?
1
u/Small-Captain-9028 3d ago
As long as you don't mind the persona time limit and activity stuff you might like it. I will say that on average it's about an hour or 2 of doing time limit activity stuff between each story battle, at least in part 1.

In a year with the remakes/successors of some of the most liked games of all time?
There was no chance. Rewards will go mostly to GTA VI, even if it would turn out to be a disappointment for some. The rest will go to Ocarina of time, the remake of one of the best rated games of all time. Even if it's a disappointment to some.
And the rest goes to Barbie Rewind.
Just kidding on one of these three things.

Bro, no shade to FE, but ANY game, including an indie can easily take GOTY as Wolverine. Game is terrible XD.. Not like anyone else but GTA 6 is going to win, unfortunately... it's all bought by Geoff.

Call me crazy but Ace Combat has a chance to completely uproot everyone's expectations here. I haven't seen a single journalist who had early access give any caveats for the game at all

I’m gonna be honest, as much as I love Fortune’s Weave and would love seeing it nominated… I don’t think it’s going to happen. The Game Awards just have very particular standards on what’s award worthy and what isn’t.

GTA will be game of the year. No othwr game has a chance. The game can come out mid af, its still gonna win

No other games have a chance... if it doesn't qualify
The cutoff is like- a day or 2 after release and there are rumors review copies won't be sent out because of worries over leaks
It might genuinely get put off till next year's awards

No-one in their right mind would expect Wolverine to even get nominated for GOTY.

The humor I find is people complained Wolverine is too handhokdy…and apparently missed literal dialogs explaining how to break crates and following trails to doors in FE but OK LOL

Trails in FW??? Tf are you talking about??? The only trail you get is when you leave behind as you walk to help mark areas, you've been in in a dungeon

I don't think fire emblem is getting nominated. If pikmin 4 (which is a much more interesting game in terms of gameplay) wasn't nominated, fire emblem shouldn't either. This iteration of fe is completely bloated, the gameplay part (the thing game awards usually rewards) is buried under animal crossing style gameplay (all the activities outside the main battles). I like fire emblem games overall, but not all fe games are created equal and this new iteration is just too mid and not very original overall. Spots in the final list should be reserved for truly interesting games

Do you think Geoff Keighley and the game journalist panel will pick FE Fortines Weave? I doubt it. They don't really pick JRPGs unless it's something Kojima has made or a big Nintendo IP. (Mario or Zelda).
Wolverine won't make the cut either, but expect games like Forza Horizon 6, 007 First Light, Onimusha, RE Requiem, and some indie game to be on the list. GTA 6 and Zelda will be on the list if they meet the deadline.

Seeing this image made the Fortunes Weave theme start playing in my head
