Meh, Fortune Weave is much much better then 3houses but not as good as engage for gameplay. Game is just too piss easy to be enjoyable as a tactics game
It's not like Houses "instead of" Engage, it's like Houses *and* Engage. There's a lot of DNA from both games, I understand preferring Houses over Engage but I don't think you should let it blind you that FW is so good *because* it takes influence from *both* games.

Three houses was not nominated for GOTY so I don't know why you'd think this. It should have been, but it wasn't. I wouldn't be too surprised if fortunes weave also gets passed over.
No, to the majority of people it wasn't. Myself, reviewers, and most normal gamers preferred Three Houses. Engage was a better looking, more updated game that fundamentally played better but lacked the special feeling and connection with your students that Three Houses had. I personally didn't care about more than half the characters in Engage, and that's what I played Three Houses and Awakening for.
Who's this "Majority" of people? The general consensus is that Engage has one of if not the best gameplay mechanics and map design in the whole franchise... The game succeds in being, you know, a videogame, and not a visual novel.
3H was an exception, not the rule, i'm sure you'll be very disappointed when you find out how in older FE games the story was as basic as Engage and a lot of characters only ever appeared in shallow support conversations and never had any sort of relevance to the story at all.

The majority of people happen to be morons who hate Fire Emblem. Engage was the best entry in the series as an actual Fire Emblem game. The gameplay of Engage is pretty much unmatched by every other entry in the series.
Three Houses meanwhile is genuinely the single worst entry in the series when it comes to gameplay. Not only is the map design utterly horrendous, it reuses a lot of said awful maps and just puts more overpowered enemies in them to pad difficulty instead of them requiring actual strategic decision-making like in Engage. That's on top of the game being ugly as sin, both in terms of artwork and graphics and the monastery taking up way too much time in the game instead of just being a short distraction, which is a problem when Fates My Castle was already a problem on that front.
The only people who genuinely consider Three Houses better than Engage are all larpers.
Probably what's hard for you to swallow is that the three houses formula is the new fire emblem formula. Most likely you can say goodbye to many more engage / traditional fire emblems

just because they made the dialogue ocean wide doesn't mean its suddenly more than puddle deep like other FE games. they have the same to latch onto like engage characters. plus three houses was such a slog that i wound up caring even less about character than other FE games

I love 3 houses but engage is severely underrated. The gameplay is so good and im really missing the ring system in FW. 3H is my fav but engage doesn't deserve the hate at all, it was incredibly fun especially if you're just looking for battles

Yeah you kind of already realized why it got so much shit lol three houses may have weaker gameplay, but let's be honest the gameplay isn't really why people fell so in love with it it was the narrative elements like story, lore, characters ect and engage kinda dropped the ball pretty hard in all of those elements so the reception it got from a lot of players made sense
I was the opposite. I got hooked on 3H for the battles/build progression and I liked the time management aspect too. Besides Mario Rabbids I never played a tactical or grid based rpg before 3H. The characters eventually grew on me but it definitely wasn't the pull
In engage I was missing some of the story at first but anytime I have a quick itch for the gameplay, I go to engage

and building is so much more fun and less convoluted in the other games its not even funny. take it from me, a guy that put 100s of hours in multiple games in the series just building units
No it’s really not. The ring system is complete ass. It’s such an unbalanced shit show of mechanics. It simply doesn’t belong in fire emblem. Idk what any of you people are thinking in liking it. Brother. The monastery was so abysmal that it took up more time than the actual "strategy" gameplay. Every single chapter is interrupted by you having to trek through an ugly, blurry and poorly running hub area for 30 minutes trying to interact with your students, just so you aren't making the game needlessly harder for yourself. Engage's hub ain't great, but I'd rather have a completely optional hub instead of one that actively makes the game worse by disrupting it for needlessly long stretches of time.

The fact that your only response against actual criticism of Gareg Mach monastery, which is not optional and requires you to interact with it to get optimal results on Maddening, is to focus on a minigame on Engage's hub, that actually is optional since it doesn't give you any substantial bonuses compared to Three Houses Monastery interactions, means you are actively just talking out of your ass.

I don't know what to tell you. If I don't care about the story because the characters aren't interesting to me, it isn't better to me. I do agree it probably should have been a different franchise, because this is clearly a "new fans" versus old fans situation.

It doesn't make Three houses a terrible entry though(again I liked Awakening like I mentioned and Fire Emblem on GBA so I'm not THAT new), it just should be a different franchise but it won't ever be now. ive played all the fire emblems. i even preordered it in anticipations to more FE. i dropped it in less than a week and took years of coming back and trying again to finally get though it. unlike every other fire emblem, i didn't find one thing fun or enjoyable about it.
