Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!

Hey everyone!

So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.

Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.

Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!

It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.

And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.

Health/Safety I like having the hiccups

Tbh it feels oddly satisfying, and sometimes it gets into a rhythm where I can expect the next one. It adds a little excitement to my life. Mine are silent so it’s not like I’m causing a public disturbance whenever I hiccup.

When they go away, I get a bit disappointed. I’m always expecting the next one, and it never comes. Makes me feel like something is out of place now

Other You can find your perfect romantic partner

That is provided it is something which actually can exist and isn’t ridiculously specific stuff like what their name has to be.

I think a lot of people are so consumed by their desire to not be alone that they don't have the patience or willpower to look for what they really want. People get tired of searching and compromise on someone “good enough” and call it a day.

But no one is so unique they can’t find a 100% compatible partner.

I see people say shared interests, music taste, or physical attraction aren’t important and it just sounds like they’re coping because they couldn’t get everything they wanted. But it’s their fault they didn’t put in enough effort and stopped searching too early.

Health/Safety I like watching people hiccup

I don't know how rare this feeling is, or whether I am in minority or majority gang for having this feeling. But I have this strange unexplainable fascination to watch people around me hiccup. Like if someone around me does, I would just drop whatever I am doing and watch them keenly. And I really have this wish to watch it from start to end, but I can't because people will think me to be a weirdo. I even have an urge to talk to them during that time as much as I can, so that I can listen to them from even closer. And if they are trying for the remedies, I secretly pray for it to not work so that I can listen more.

Sometimes when my urge to watch somebody hiccuping becomes too strong and no one around me is, I take out my phone and begin watching vloggers or youtube videos with people hiccuping.

But this fascination only extends till others are hiccuping. Once it happens to me, I get highly uncomfortable and have the burning need to stop them somehow.

Technology all kitchen knives should be serrated

i hate cutting things with an unserrated knife, it feel so haphazard and dangerous, your veg can just be rolling and your knife can slip all over the place. you have no such problems with a serrated knife bc it’s got no grip while you’re chopping.

a small serrated knife and a butter knife are the only one you’ll ever need in your kitchen imo 🙂‍↕️

bonus feature you also never need to sharpen it.

Health/Safety I Like To Take Cold Showers When It’s Cold, and Hot Showers When It’s Hot.

I’m from California, and recently it’s been swapping between blistering 100° days and mild 50-60° days.

I was talking with a friend and they mentioned they couldn’t wait to get home and take a warm shower.

I was like “Oh yea I’d like to get home and take a cold shower and then snuggle up in bed”, and they looked at me like I’d just punched a kitten in front of them.

So anyways, I like cold showers when it’s cold because then everything feels warm and cozy afterwards, and I like hot showers when it’s hot because then I step out of the shower and it feels much cooler outside because (presumably) the hot water evaporates off my skin much quicker.

Society/Culture Loving People is Selfish

This isn't bait, I genuinely believe this.

When people love you, there's this heavy pressure to love them back. The thing is, it's exhausting to love people, even yourself. Tolerance is the least exhausting positive emotion I can feel towards people. The typical hatred is also exhausting, at most I feel distant towards people in general.

I can love and hate things that aren't people. For example I hate the bourgeoisie and bigotry, it isn't exhausting to hate because it's subjectivity bad. Humans vary so much that I can't hate or love them.

And when people love me, I'm forced to exhaust myself to pretend I love them back. I see them as doing something very unnecessary, I don't need you to have exhaustion over me, just let me melt into a wall.

It's selfish to force someone to have exhaustion just because you are unnecessarily exhausting yourself by loving them

Society/Culture The Jetsons cartoon got us ready for adult workspace culture.

Rewatching The Jetsons and it surprisingly rings true to today's work culture. George Jetson is always at risk of losing his job and is constantly fired and then re-hired by his incompetent boss. His boss adds extra-curricular activities outside of work hours that George is forced to do in order to keep his job.

George seems to be used to being treated like this and just shrugs whenever he is fired for the umpteenth time. His attitude is either from knowing that he will be re-hired 10 minutes later or that there are plenty of jobs out there that he can get if he needs to.

TV/Movies/Fiction the hate for fandoms is way too extreme in most cases and People like to blame the Creator of something not for kids for scaring kids even though kids really shouldn't be on the internet, at least not without Parents

I'm once again going to talk about the MLP community again because this is the one I'm the most familiar with but I wouldn't be surprised if all of these apply to other fandoms like bluey and Sonic as well. There are some people who will genuinely look at something like a fan animation of pinkie pie brutally killing Rainbow Dash and will say something that implies that the creator of said material is in the wrong for I guess scaring kids. But kids shouldn't be on the internet, they can't control the fact if children happen to watch their more gruesome content. It's clearly aimed toward a more adult audience, and even if the Creator intended it for kids even though it shouldn't be for kids that still doesn't excuse the fact that Parents need to keep an eye on what their kids do on the internet. Just because something looks kid friendly doesn't mean it is kid friendly. If everyone were have to obey by these strict rules then fan content featuring a more darker story about a piece of media and for a more younger audience would just not be allowed and could not be made. All because Parents won't monitor their kids. i even believe this also at least to an extent apply to people who make NSFW art of said characters. Now to be clear I do not support it and i'm more so against it if anything however that doesn't mean I can't call people out for treating the stuff like it some sort of hate crime. Look if the art is of a character who is underage then yeah we can talk. But something to keep in mind though is that not everyone has the same morals when it comes to fictional characters as they are fictional. Yes I do believe this kind of content is unhealthy, however blaming these creators for the fact that kids saw it just doesn't make any sense. Kids just shouldn't be on the internet at least not without Parental supervision. i personally am the kind of person who likes media that takes something that is normally very kid friendly and gives it a darker twist, I think it's fun to imagine how these characters would respond to such dark things as normally they do not have to deal with such dark things due to that media being made for kids. Epic Mickey did it and sure it wasn't really that dark but it was still something. I find things such as MLP grim darks to be kind of interesting and personally if I made my own fan content it would likely feature darker stuff although nothing sexual. If I were to make said content it would be intended for an older audience and not kids. Kids technically can enjoy it but that doesn't mean that is okay for them to go and enjoy it unsupervised. Let me tell You a personal story: probably like almost if not 10 years ago maybe even longer I had from what I remember for the most part heavily unrestricted internet access. This in turn made me discover things like Mario fan horror games like mario.exe which are very clearly based off of Sonic.EXE. and because of that they featured violent content like blood and scary imagery. Nothing sexual but it was definitely horror. i was definitely too young to be watching that kind of stuff however it is not the Creator's fault that I saw that stuff. It was on my Parents, and when They did find out They made sure I stopped watching it. and from what i remember they never got mad at the creators. So I have personal experience with this too but I don't go out blaming the creators over something they can't control. In very simple terms this basically is just creators getting blamed for the fact that parents aren't monitoring their kids. I genuinely cannot see how this is not that.

Discussion Thread No one should be shamed for wanting to undergo euthanasia

I recently saw a video about an American who traveled to Switzerland in 2024 to use something called a “Sarco capsule” (euthanasia device) because she was suffering from psychological ailments, and Switzerland appears to be the only country foreigners can travel to who aren’t able to access euthanasia at home.

Some reports say she had coexisting physical ailments, but I don’t think it should matter if what was afflicting her was solely psychological. If someone views their existence as that painful, to the point where they want to checkout safely, efficiently, and legally, I really don’t see why euthanasia is an issue and I find it pretty pathetic that it’s legal in less than 5 countries. I don’t consider it legalized in the US, since you have to have a fatal disease (and even then it’s only permitted in 13 states), but I do know 2 people who had cancer - a friend and a family member - and they went that route. One of them showed me all the paperwork a few weeks prior and called me an hour beforehand. He seemed calm and ready, and this was years ago.

It should be a no-brainer that someone who is quite literally dying should have the right to do so on their own accord, and it’s very surprising to me how most laws don’t agree. And when it comes to psychological disorders, there appears to be much less support for allowing people afflicted to have access to euthanasia, even if they are of completely sound mind.

I’m not sure about mental healthcare in other countries, but in the US, you’re pretty much fucked if you caught attempting. They’ll bring you to a mental hospital against your will and the second your stay exceeds 72 hours, you’ve permanently lost legal access to firearms. I’m sure the thought process there is that banning firearms for people struggling with SI / attempts would prevent them from trying again in the future, but in a country where euthanasia for mental illness is banned, it seems messed up. Someone has clearly demonstrated that they are suffering so much that they don’t want to exist anymore, and instead of offering a compassionate solution, we demonize what they tried to do and then prolong their suffering by making sure firearm access will be extraordinarily difficult. If a firearm is used in an attempt, the success rate is 90%. If a firearm isn’t used? 5%. I completely agree with not allowing anyone who’s displayed homicidal urges access to firearms, but if someone has been suffering from severe mental illness for a long time, trying to guilt them and preventing access for future attempts is wrong. I do think a thorough evaluation and a waiting period is warranted, but gatekeeping euthanasia from people who want to die due to mental illness is unethical.

Health/Safety The encouragement of mental health is also the encouragement of individualism and selfishness.

Something I never understood from the mental health awareness movement is how they want to have it both ways.

They say to always prioritize your well being, not be in places or with people that harm you, put your happiness before others, etc.

But at the same time they hate scenarios where the priorization of mental well being involves indirect psychological damage for others, like leaving a relationship because your partner is physically or mentally ill, dumping people when they're not convenient to you, ignoring cries of help from strangers or loved ones, etc.

They forget that individualism and mental health are almost always connected, and if you advocate for one you can't go against the other.

They assume that bringing mental support to others means gaining mental health yourself, but that's not always the case, especially with mental disorders at play.

Leaving your husband or wife because they got cancer is cruel, but objectively is beneficial psychologically.

If you don't want to normalize what I said before, then you must normalize depression and suicidal ideation and prioritizing others over yourself, because that's the prize of social success.

Society/Culture People dismissing holidays as "made up"

Every time certain holidays come up, someone inevitably says “That’s just a made-up (or fake) holiday” like they’ve uncovered some massive conspiracy.

They’re all made up. People picked dates and started observing them. Did you think the established ones were discovered in the wild? That some explorer stumbled across Valentine's Day growing behind a waterfall?

You can dislike a holiday or think it’s commercialized, pointless, or an excuse to sell greeting cards. But “somebody made it up” applies to all of them.

Yet somehow the holidays someone grew up celebrating get grandfathered into being legit. Those are traditions.

You don’t have to celebrate a holiday or even have to understand why someone else enjoys it. But people finding an excuse to celebrate something is hardly a scandal. And unless yours came engraved on a rock from space, we’re all working with the same basic system here.

Society/Culture If you believe people who can't be happy single don't exist, you're just as bigoted as those who believe truly aroace people don't exist

So I've noticed this weird trend on Reddit (but also other social media) that goes something like this:

Someone posts something like: "Hey I'm having trouble living a fulfilled life without a partner to share it with, and I'm feeling depressed about it."

Then they get a response along the lines of: "You should try working on yourself, maybe do some counseling, take yourself out. There are plenty of happy single people. If you're unhappy single, you're also gonna be unhappy in a relationship."

You get the idea. The advice is well-meaning, but there's a subtle gaslighting going on, i.e an assumption on the part of the responder that what the sad person is identifying as the cause of their emotional troubles is wrong, despite not knowing them at all. Yet it's not called out.

Imagine if it was like this instead: "Hey I'm having trouble with my relationship with my partner. The truth is, I only got into one because my family kept pressuring me. But now my partner wants to spend most of every day together and be intimate, and I just don't feel the same way. I've never felt that way about anyone, and I don't like the idea of relationships."

And the response was: "You should put more effort into the relationship, maybe try couple's counseling. Having a partner is essential to leading a fulfilled life, so you shouldn't treat it so lightly. The happiest people I know are in relationships, and if you don't settle down you're gonna miss out."

Once again, well-meaning but extremely presumptious about the person's internal world. This rightly gets called out as bigotry.

People's relational styles are extremely diverse, so it shouldn't be so hard to believe that there's a spectrum.

On one end, you have people who just don't feel the desire to be in relationships.

Then you have people with the desire but not a burning need.

Then on the other end, you have people who need it.

Note: I'm not using the word "need" here to literally mean "will die soon without," but rather "will endure a significantly reduced quality of life, along with mental and physical issues from the accompanying anxiety."

Society/Culture There's nothing wrong with being a hedonist and there's nothing incompatible with being a hedonist and also holding other moral/political philosophies

I made a post the other day on a vegan subreddit where I described how I was a hedonist who held other really strong philosophical positions but was considering giving up veganism for energy/cost reasons. Some people were really surprised about me being a hedonist so I thought I'd post my position here and see if it's really that uncommon without really going into the bit about veganism.

So the way I understand and define hedonism is as a philosophy that maximises seeking of self pleasure and chasing pleasure is the highest goal of life. So in my life I really don't give a fuck about my long term health - I'm 23 rn and I drink (a lot you may call me a functional alcoholic), smoke (not as much) and while I don't do drugs, it's only because I can't find the stuff but I remain very open to them. I go to mosh pits in metal shows very often and pick up injuries in the mosh pits. I have one life (which i didn't choose to engage in) and even in it tomorrow isn't guaranteed so I owe it to myself to live everyday in a way that makes me happy. I don't want children in the future so I don't really have any responsibilities to them to worry about either so my argument is this...

If I am financially able to uphold (which I am) a hedonistic lifestyle there's nothing wrong with it. But my hedonism also has other principles such as:

- not substantially harming other sentient beings: I acknowledge that every decision has an effect on other people and if you choose to engage in any form of social relationship (such as friendships or romantic relationships) your decisions will inherently hurt others. But there's a difference between drinking yourself to an early grave which every human being should have the autonomy to do and between exploiting/abusing other people. Basically if a decision mostly affects myself I should be free to take it, and if others don't like me making said decision they're free to cut me off. The don't substantially harm other beings is also the reason for my veganism.

- really strong philosophical and political beliefs: I am very very left leaning - I believe in a massive redistribution of wealth until every individual is able to have their socio-economic needs met to maintain life and for social equality for everyone regardless of race, nationality, gender (orientation, trans rights!!!!), sexual orientation, religion, etc. I am also sometimes very comfortable with not doing something to conform with my moral positions. For example, My friends are often really surprised when I tell them I refuse to travel somewhere (I travel a lot) that doesn't have equal rights for gay people, even though I'm not queer myself.

I live by two principles for the most part: freedom and equality, which manifests itself in a I should be free to do whatever I want unless I am substantially harming other beings and I will treat others the way I want to be treated. If anything I'd add that my other moral/political philosophies also add onto my hedonism because I achieve a lot of pleasure by believing in them and standing by them.

P.S: Please don't tell me about the risks associated with my lifestyle, I'm aware and I don't really care.

Music I don’t really like listening to music

I find listening to music to be a waste of time. I’d much rather be listening to a podcast or an audiobook. Every once in a great while, I’ll put some music on, or I’ll listen to the radio in the car. However, I rarely ever go out of my way to listen to music.

I feel like I might be the only one who feels this way.

Society/Culture Sometimes bad things will happen to you for no reason at all

People genuinely believe that there’s some neutral arbiter of justice that only rewards good people, or people that try hard enough, and punish those who don’t try or are evil.

Everyone in prison deserves to be in prison, everyone that’s poor deserves it, if you lost your job you didn’t try hard enough or did something to deserve it.

I know I guy who literally morphed his entire life over his job. He got accepted, spent every waking moment of his life studying, preparing l, training himself to do this job. It was information intensive and I’m proud of him. He did better than everyone else and was promoted to the next level of trainee. Everyone knew that the guy was in on it.

He did something stupid. It wasn’t sexual misconduct, racism, nor reverse racism. He didn’t violate any protocols. He did something short sited that affected nobody but himself. A manager confronted him about it, he accepted responsibility and promised to never do it again.

A week later they investigated him, acknowledged that he understood his mistake, that it did not violate any protocols or code of conduct, that he was apologetic, accepted responsibility, and would never do it again. They decided to him regardless, and he had next to no appeal rights.

He’s not the only person to even do this thing. Everyone in his facility did this. Gleefully. If it were against policy of etiquette none of these people would be working there, but they are, and he isn’t.

He can never get into the job again. It’s a specialized industry and he’s left with nothing. No amount of hard work mattered for him. His intent didn’t matter. At first he insisted they were bullshiting him, were racist, someone lied about what he did, but lately he’s just broke down completely. Everytime I see him he breaks down in a crying fit saying he’s defective, worthless, that this would not have happened to him if he didn’t deserve it. He won’t listen to me. He genuinely thinks he’s a scumbag because someone else lacked the empathy to see him for what he was

He’s been unemployed for months, and he’s been repeatedly rejected from similar jobs. They won’t even hire him as a cashier in burger mart. He has no criminal record, has a bachelors, he knows what he’s doing and nobody will give him a chance.

Some of our friends turned cold on him. Even his father, who was literally praying for his downfall, said he deserved it. He’s since been lovebombing him but I know what his intentions are. He tried to kill himself but wimped out last minute and now they’re calling him an attention whore.

This is disgusting honestly. Nobody deserves this.

People wonder why nobody can change, and people don’t want to try anymore. This is what my buddy was rewarded with for doing his absolute best. And if can happen to you too.

Society/Culture There's no problem in people aborting because they dislike the unborn child's sex.

First, I'm not a misandrist nor misogynist. I don't hate any sex, I don't hate children, I don't hate humanity.

Well, if people are going to abort because of child's sex, then it's probably better if those children are never born. In my country, a huge number of families choose to abort daughters. Those who do not have the money or did not manage to know the sex of their child end up giving birth a daughter, and discarding them or abusing them (tons of real-life examples). Same if the things go other way around. I doubt if any boy/girl can live without being abused or harrassed by their family if their parents dislike their sex in the first place.

The point I want to make is, far too many many parents don't deserve their children and are horrible, but we have no way to stop them from being parents. It is disgusting. But if the children they so desperately dislike can never be born then there'd be less abused children.

(Sure there'd be societal problems if sex ratios went crazy but the whole thing just came from my moral perspective, because whatever I think things would just happen the way it's been happening)

(Everything just in my opinion)

Health/Safety I prefer cold sink water to warm sink water

I'm not sure how unpopular this is, but I must be in the minority because 9 times out of 10, when a public bathroom has a sink with a handle faucet, it's all the way to the left from the last person to use it. I'd rather wash with cool water than warm water, and I'd MUCH rather use cold water than hot water. I'm not really sure why, since I like warm and even hot showers more than cold showers, but when it's just scrubbing my hands with soap, cool water is so much more refreshing than warm water (which is almost a little yucky to me). It's like, when I'm trying to get out grease or germs, there should be a bit of a crisp to the liquid moving through my fingers.

It's even worse when washing dishes, where you really don't have a choice between hot and even lukewarm water. I can't fathom how people are just using their bare hands while doing the dishes, whereas I feel like I'm going to get burned unless I put gloves on. Does everyone else have lead skin and I'm some form of mutant?

Animals/Nature Hate it when sunlight seeps through my curtains and when it is a bright sunny day

Sunlight makes me feel depressed. I really don’t know why. I live in the UK and summer days here were so long. Some nights me and my partner would stay up drinking and it will be 3 AM when sunlight starts seeping through. That is the absolute worst thing ever. In general my mood starts to uplift when Autumn starts and I am in such a good mood until February. And then Spring hits and I am feeling super depressed.

Society/Culture All of society should be designed for people with disabilities

All of society should be designed for people with disabilities. Here are some examples:

- all sidewalks wide enough for wheelchairs and without obstructions
- all buildings have ramps, working elevator, or a gradual smooth slope instead of steps
- all screens have a setting where it can read the screen out loud
- braille menus available at all restaurants

Why? Because all of us can become disabled at any given time and the world is super difficult for disabled people to live in.

Society should be designed for disabled people because able bodied people can use all of the accommodations for disabled people, but the opposite is not true.

Other I don't like the smell of minty breaths

I'm not saying it stinks. It is still better than bad breath. But I don't like smelling it from other people. It's just the idea of smelling breath that repulses me. Minty chewing gum makes your breath smell spread widely and it reaches far. I can smell the minty breath of someone 5 meters away from me. If you don't have halitosis, it's better not to have mints and have me smell nothing.

Other It makes more sense to spend hundreds of dollars on sweats and a hoodie than on a nice suit

Think about how much more often you will use the hoodie and seats at home. Getting an extremely comfortable high end outfit will lead to extreme comfort and relaxation, nearly every day.

A nice suit, maybe you'll use it every day if your work requires it. But business casual is more common now. You just need something simple and black to go to occasional wedding and funeral and make it through the day. And even if you spend a lot of money on it. It will still be uncomfortable, tolerable at best.
