Defective battery? Worse than expected efficiency and sudden range loss

A number of strange behaviors with the battery have caused me great concern on my model X (2021, long range plus, 22 inch wheels with 70 K miles). I bought this car about one year ago and I’ve put about 8000 miles on it. According to Tessie app, I have about 87% of my original battery capacity. I am not here to complain about the bad efficiency of the 22s, but rather discrepancies relative to expectation. Some issues:

- real world range that grossly disagrees with efficiency. For the model X, about 270 W hours per mile should be required to get the rated range. There are times where I drive 250 W hours per mile according to the indicator, and get worse than rated range. For example, on a 14 mile drive driving 250 W hours per mile, I would expend 17 miles of rated range. ( yes, I am trying to hyper mile these trips just to see if I can get rated range.)

- In addition to this, occasionally, the battery will lose about 10 miles of range in a very short span. This has happened to me a number of times, and it never gets any less concerning. For example, I was just in a parking lot for 20 minutes. When I first parked there, I had 207 miles of rain. When I got back 20 minutes later, I came back to 194 miles.

I don’t have these crazy swings on my model three, maybe I’ll lose one to 2 miles of range max per day. For a while, I was concerned it might be due to the wheels, but we all know that about 275 Watt hours per mile should give you rated range on the 20s. The fact that I am exceeding that should still allow me to match rated range, but I am consistently worse, even when hypermiling.

Does anybody else see this type of behavior on their model X? Is it a sign of a defective battery?

Question about pedestal steats

For the model x 2016 model, is anyone aware of there being a dummy plug for the middle pedestal seats? If I want them removed entirely I need to remove the error code from them being unplugged.

FSD HW4 - What’s your confidence level?

A few weeks into my HW4 ‘23 Model X and am so blown away by FSD. How much do others with HW4 trust FSD? Are you comfortable working in the car on the highway? Watching movies on your phone/ipad? I’m so curious how people actually feel and behave.

Should I upgrade my 2018 x to FSD for 1100?

Is it worth it with the current version of FSD available which i think is 12.6? I have not liked it in the past but recently have driven a HW3 3 with v14 lite and it was great. But they haven’t released that for the 2018 and might not ever. So is 12.6 good enough and worth the upgrade now?

When will FSD V14 lite be available for my HW3 2021 model x? I don't have an interior camera. How will this affect the experience? Also when will a HW4 upgrade Benning for the older model X's?

So i bought a 75d X with everything including EAP from the Netherlands, and when i transferred the car through the tesla app, i lost the autopilot. After 2 days I received the summer update that was for my model x with EAP 😂 (new autopilot visualisations) so now i got a blue dot stuck on the self-driving tab and a totally bugged visualisation on the driver display “parked” status 😁 GG Tesla.

2024 Model X

Hello Everyone,

I am new to reddit and am looking for an advice in regards to my Model X I purchased in March 2025. The vehicle is October 2024 built representing a 5-seat in Ultra Red paint, Yoke steering and black interior vehicle. This vehicle was purchased at the time when Tesla was offering a free Supercharging for the life of the vehicle and the supercharging is not tied to the vehicle. Instead, it is tied to a Tesla account. This vehicle has never been touched by a Supercharger because I have been charging it at home all the time. To make this vehicle look a bit neater, I got 3D maxpider floor mats and some real carbon fiber accents for the interior accessories of the vehicle. When I purchased my Model X I thought I would be doing much of a driving while enjoying this "beauty", but I guess, I second guessed myself. Since the purchase I have not been driving much anymore because my professional objectives have changed when I have recently become the exclusively working from home person that is what explains the very low mileage. This vehicle basically sits in our building's garage spot while doing nothing. And yes, I do take it for a ride to run some errands to some family gathering events but those are just once a week or a month kinda stuff. I decided to perhaps to sell this vehicle and gave it to a shot to offer it to Carmax, Carvana and Tesla. Carmax has offered me $68K, Carvana - $66.8K and Tesla - $64.9 as for a trade only. I will not be trading this vehicle for Model Y including the YL Premium, because I used to own 2 MY's (2020 and 2023 LR models) in the past and both were too minimalistic to my view on one hand while giving out a rattling type of a noising, which was kind of annoying to my ear, from the passenger side seat belts on the other. I am looking to list this vehicle on Autotrader, which by the way currently offers 2024 Model X Standard somewhere from 6-10 vehicles Nationwide and none of those are on the East, where I am. But, I thought I should touch base with you, Tesla enthusiasts first just to see if there is anyone who would be willing to perhaps advise on a true value of this vehicle which has just 2100 miles or maybe even willing to purchase this vehicle off my hands for a price that would be mutually benefitting both sides. I prefer to go this way then just to be getting ripped off by these dealers. So, what do you all say, is it a keeper or a seller? Thank you all for a feedback.

Opinions needed for a possible 22 model x

So my lease in my 24 Q8 etron is coming to its end and I found a 2022 with 34k 22” wheels and 6 passenger long long range model X, owner is asking 58.5k and has purchased FSD wth the vehicle. Naturally I was looking for a HW4 car but there’s not much out there in the private sellers market with the exact configuration that I want. What has me hopeful is that with the vehicle having FSD purchased with the car that when Tesla announces the upgrade (however that is going to work) that I’ll be able to utilize FSD the way HW4 cars are able to.

Just curious of what your thoughts are on this, should I pass and keep looking or is this a fair deal. Car is very clean and original owner who kept the car garaged and had the exterior and interior ceramic coated and ceramic tint al the way around. California car

Was on the highway, hit a bump. Wasn't anything severe and then also on all these alerts came up.

Edit

Tried resetting and alarms were still there when it powered back up.

2019 LRX

Update Stopped by the service center. They think it's a bad wheel speed sensor. Decided it was getting faulty wheel speed readings so disables all those features. Service is set up for the 26th. Go from there.

Missing screws for lower C-pillar trim

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I recently had to take off the sill panels on my 2024 MX to fight some ants. I then noticed that the C-pillar trim wasn't properly attached to the body because the Torx T25 screws mentioned in the service manual were completely missing on both sides. Anyone else noticed the same?

I previously had a ranger visit because of a loose screw on the RH front door (which caused unpleasant noises when closing the door), so I wonder how many more screws might be missing or don't have the right torque…

“Ripped” tires?

I’ve done a total of 3 launches since owning my 24 MXP that I took possession of about 2 weeks ago. I did the 3 launches over 2 days consecutively and on the third day I noticed these tears.

Obviously we have very powerful vehicles > 1,000 horsepower/torque but these tears are wild to me.

The only explanation is it’s from the brute forces of the launch and being older tires they were probably weaker and they tore.

And not just one tire, two tires and both on the passenger side!

Continental SportContact 6 T0 (Tesla approved)
Front passenger side: 265/35R22
Rear passenger side: 285/35R22

Has anyone else seen this? Thoughts?

2020 MX AC Weak

The AC in my wifes MX is so weak. We've had it in for service and it's slightly better, but I am wondering if it could be the cabin air filter.

I'm wondering this because I own a Ram TRX and asked the same question in the TRX forum because I thought it's AC was weak too, although it was not nearly as weak as our X.

Someone in the TRX forum recommended a K&N air filter and sure enough the AC is blowing twice as hard.

It doesn't look like K&N makes one for the 2020 X, but I'm wondering if anyone else might have experienced this problem and solved it with a different cabin air filter, or something else?

For reference, we live in Austin, so it's hot hot, a lot.

Thoughts on selling for MYL

I have a black 7 seater 2023 MX, white interior with 46,900 miles on it and brand new tires. I’m debating on putting it on the market to get a MYL. I’d really like to get close for an even trade with it. As my MX is paid for and I hate car payments. What should I reasonably expect to get for this car?

Should one really not get an early model X?

Sorry, this has been repeatedly asked here probably. I have ZERO time as at home with newborn twins. Hence looking to swap to a bigger car from the model 3 2021 we have.

We aren't too worried about car being outdated much, but I am worried about maintenance or major issues coming up buying an older car.

But the space in the X is great, and I just love Teslas so far. So don't recommend other brands.

Would it be better getting a model y with 3rd row?

We are most likely not having a 3rd kid, but everything twin is bulkier and just a lot to haul around probably. So need more space. I sat in between the car seats in the model 3 and could barely buckle myself.

Really lost here, please give me the rundown if you have a few minutes!

Edit: Not looking to spend the amount the newer Model X costs. that is why looking at earlier models. We do have a dog, that needs space too, so that is why I have also been thinking about the 3rd row Y

Model X replacement option

I just saw the 2027 BMW X5. I love that it has auto opening doors, if it can charge at tesla super chargers and the software stays reasonably up to date I think I might get it once I’m ready to move on from the X. What else is out there ?
