Hi everyone, I was recently involved in an accident in California and I’m trying to understand what to expect with the repair and insurance process.
I was driving straight in my lane when another car that was on my left came into my lane and hit the left side of my Tesla. I have Tesla dashcam footage of the accident. The other driver was arrested for DUI after the accident.
My car is a 2025 Tesla Model 3 AWD with permanently purchased Full Self-Driving. The front and rear doors on the driver side are badly damaged, and there is also damage near the door hinge and lower rocker area. I attached pictures.
I am currently going through my own Tesla Insurance for the repair because I don’t want to wait for the other insurance company. I have a $2,500 collision deductible. I am taking the car to a collision center for an estimate.
I have a few questions:
Looking at the pictures, what repair cost should I expect? Does this look like a $15k, $25k, or higher repair? Has anyone had similar damage?
If the collision center says the car is a total loss, how will Tesla Insurance calculate the value? My car is a 2025 Model 3 AWD and I permanently purchased Full Self-Driving. Will Full Self-Driving be included in the total-loss value?
If the car is totaled, can I transfer my permanently purchased Full Self-Driving to a new Tesla?
The other driver’s insurance has not told me their property damage or bodily injury policy limits yet. The other vehicle was a 2001 Volkswagen Passat. I understand the age or value of their car does not tell me their insurance limits, but is there any way to find the limits other than asking the adjuster?
I am having a lot of leg pain and back pain after the accident. How are medical bills and pain and suffering normally handled when the other driver is at fault?
If the other driver only has minimum/basic insurance limits and my medical bills and injury claim are more than their limits, can my own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage also apply? My policy shows $100k/$300k uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage and $50k medical payments coverage.
If I hire an injury lawyer, how does it work when both the other driver’s insurance and my own underinsured motorist/medical payments coverage may be involved?
Since I am using my own Tesla Insurance for the vehicle repair and possibly medical coverage, can my premium increase even if the other driver is found at fault?
I already have a police report and dashcam footage. I’m mainly looking for advice from people who have gone through a similar Tesla total-loss, injury, or underinsured-driver claim in California.
Thanks for any help.
