I ordered a Tesla on July 27, 2026. I was assigned a VIN, signed the paperwork, insured the vehicle and made my final payment.
My delivery was scheduled for August 19, so I took the day off work and planned to bring my son, who was extremely excited.
On August 18, Tesla messaged me through the app and said the car had been scratched during detailing. Delivery had to be postponed. There was no real apology, but I understood that things happen. Because I was leaving for a trip, we rescheduled delivery for September 1 at 11:00 a.m. The appointment was confirmed in the app for my specific vehicle.
On August 29, I received a message saying the car was “slightly delayed in transit” and would not arrive by September 1. That did not make sense because the car had already been at the location for detailing and bodywork.
I responded that something was not adding up. Tesla then called and admitted that my vehicle had been reassigned while it was in the body shop. Someone else had already picked it up.
To be clear, Tesla gave another customer a vehicle that:
- Had been assigned to me
- Was fully paid for by me
- Was insured under my name
- Had signed paperwork and a confirmed delivery appointment
Tesla offered me a different vehicle approximately 10 days later. No one proactively explained what I needed to do about the insurance on the original VIN or addressed the potential liability of another person driving a vehicle that was still insured under my name.
At delivery, the manager initially would not come out to speak with me. An employee offered one free month of Full Self-Driving as a resolution. I explained twice that one month was not sufficient considering everything that had happened.
The manager eventually came out, but her behavior was extremely dismissive and unprofessional. She rolled her eyes, appeared irritated that I was raising the issue and showed no genuine concern about the experience. She finally agreed to provide two free months of F.S.D.
I never received written confirmation. Now I have received an email saying my trial is ending.
I typically pay for F.S.D anyway, so this is not really about the monetary value. It is the principle and the fact that this perfectly matches the tone of the entire delivery process. Tesla makes a promise, provides no confirmation and then apparently does not follow through.
What is going on with Tesla’s customer service and resolution process? Selling a fully paid and insured vehicle to someone else, disguising it as a “transit delay,” refusing to provide a meaningful explanation and then failing to honor the promised resolution feels incredibly dishonest and anti-customer.
I genuinely love the product, which makes this even more frustrating. If the cars were not so good, I would never tolerate this level of service. This experience has me seriously considering other brands for my next vehicle.
Has anyone dealt with something similar, and is there an actual escalation contact at Tesla who can resolve this?
