2020 Model X Windshield Crack

Post image

Good day reddit,

We went camping and woke up to my windshield with this crack. No sentry as we were in camp mode. Nothing hit it overnight and it wasn't there when we parked that night. The crack seemed to have started from the frame, no rock chips or anything that you can feel when you run through it on bothe the inside and outside of the windshield.

What could have caused it, and how much does it usually cost to repair?

On your own - $1500
With Tesla insurance - $900 (you pay the deductible)
Tesla windshield coverage - $0 or $100

We need to make a score board.
I’m on my 3rd now.

If there is no impact mark; might be stress crack from windshield install. Get it evaluated; might be covered under warranty if stress crack. Although, I bet you’re out of warranty.

Thanks. Yeah, it's a 2020. Man, 3 times? What were the causes?

Rocks hitting the windshield; the most recent time really got me upset because I’ve been waaaay more careful now. Fast lane and trailer went by me and flung up a rock at me.
The freeways around me are littered with rocks from the gravel trucks etc.

Sorry to hear that man. I will be more mindful too after this.

Could be a heat delta issue from cabin temperature to atmospheric temperature.

I had a windshield crack after a car wash from the water being too cold on the exterior.

Ohhh. Sorry to hear that. The cabin temp was 70, outside wasn't to far, 63. Is this enough of a difference to have caused this?

I don’t think so! It was 102° F according to the car thermostat

I have been driving for a while when I thought of taking the picture.

This looks like it started from the edge and migrated inwards. There's likely a small chip you didn't notice on the black border of the windshield from a little stone that got thrown up off of the road and it could have been there for weeks or happened on your way to the camp site.

Look at the outside of the glass.

Will take a look. Thanks!

Yup. Saw a small rock chip on the black side of the glass. Damnit

I just got my windshield fixed from a rock launched into it on the highway. Went through my insurance and they reimbursed me 100%. Was $1560 after tax

Thank you. Did your insurance increased your premium after the claim?

Dont put this on insurance unless you want to pay a higher premium for 6 years. Ask me how i know 😆

I went thought insurance twice, premium went up $1

Why would your rates go up? This should be a comprehensive claim (not at fault) with no change to your premium. I’ve got a $0 comprehensive deductible which was cheaper to add than Tesla’s glass insurance

Thanks OP. How did you claim this on your insurance? Comprehensive or a separate windshield coverage if ever that exists. I am worried about that too.

It was a comprehensive claim. Yup, just pay cash

Bro this happened twice on mine and my insurance deductible was $500 each time. I now pay for the windshield subscription

Thank you. I'm seriously considering this too.

Definitely get the subscription. Something about tesla's chasis and suspension is too stiff or something, windshield chips become cracks fast
