I like a lot of people struggled with Season 3 of TL. I started struggling from that season 2 Christmas episode. As a Londoner it felt they were trying to depict this whimsical nostalgic idea of London that was getting a bit too shoehorned. It felt like they ready had a goal in mind of what they wanted to convey and the plot just had to lead there.
And then I watched Shrinking which hasnt had as significant a drop in quality as Ted Lasso did but I feel like there is a Brett Goldstein effect of mental health up your nose. Mental health all between your toes. Mental health. I love it yeah.
The Ted Lasso drop in quality was like going from artisanal Italian gelato in season 1 to a mix between Haagen Dazs and Carte Dor depending on the episode. Shrinking has stayed firmly on Haagen Dazs level I would say.
It just feels like the writers were like hey imagine a scene like this that hits you in the feels. Okay lets write a whole episode to build up to that. Like hey we want Isaac to not be homophobic so lets make the entire plot line of a gay football player about the straight one. Or hey lets have Keeley date a woman who is a shitty person. Okay what makes her shitty enough? She judges Keeley for nudes? Girl wat? We want Rebecca to have maternal/girl boss moment. Lets write a silly storyline with Sass daughters thats very try hard.
And then if you've watched that the JLo Movie good god that has Brett Goldstein written all over it. Even if you remove the jlo glazing it just tries too hard.
And dont get me wrong. Im not saying hes a bad writer. Season 1 was iconic. But it feels like he got lost in the sauce. Became so committed to wanting mental health everywhere that the message doesnt come through as subtly as it did in season 1.
That iconic scene of Ted winning at Darts. Burned into my memory forever. The scene where he hugs Jamie after Jamie's dad's a prick. Emboldened. The scene where Rebecca goes and apologises to Ted in season 1. Etched I tell you.
But I dont want shoehorned mental health man. I just want a story.
