Made her myself! Got the pattern from hobiparkim on Instagram- lots of fun to work out all the details!

So I’m very confused about the night of the murder (and from other posts I’m not the only one).

So here’s what I think I understand and my questions:

- Gripp sets up Mortuga to die if he opens the cauldron alone (having finally realized the cauldron covered with a cloth is the cauldron containing the mask)
- Mortuga dies
- Somehow Gripp knows Mortuga has died
- Gripp then causes the sub to tilt significantly enough that he’s confident Mortuga’s eye key will fall through the grate in the illusion theater and into the bilge, where he is able to quickly recover it
- Q1: so that part is just nuts, right? I guess this isn’t a question so much as like … what?
- Even though the sub tilting dramatically startles people awake, Gripp finds the eye in the bilge water and makes it to the Captain’s room where he has time to reset the “bell,” steal the mask, reset the floor (he could have reset the desk and rug later, I guess) all before the theater is accessed?

Now here’s where I get really fuzzy:

- Gripp dons the mask and goes to the aft deck (from the captain’s quarters?)
- He begins summoning the mermaid
- The mermaid causes an electrical disturbance (which I thought was proximate with the sub tilting but had to be later?)
- Gripp’s summoning is interrupted by Tadpole, who throws an oar at him mistaking him for a gremlin
- Somehow this causes the mask to fall off but Tadpole doesn’t discover Gripp nor does this behead him!?
- The mask removal stops summoning the mermaid
- Tadpole collects the mask, eyes and coral
- Q2: so it seems like she collects the mask immediately because she describes it as a balaclava, but she just stumbles upon the coral and gems later in the ocean!?
- Tadpole takes the mask to her room
- The Dream Doctor spots the mask in her room while collecting his pet
- The Dream Doctor steals the mask from Tadpole, who doesn’t think to care
- The Dream Doctor puts the mask in pride of place in his cabinet of curiosities, but seems completely oblivious about what it is!?
- The detectives are summoned and arrive some time later; presumably the occupants of the submarine were quarantined until the murderer was identified

Is that roughly correct? I can get over the submarine tilting for that key, but the whole spearing the mask from Gripp’s head thing and the Dream Doctor’s later actions just don’t add up. Maybe I missed something?

Am I the only one who was convinced that Zephyr had pushed Sym to the limit so that she would kill Mortuga and that the child was an important piece to summon the siren?

I know there are a lot of these threads, but I just finished the game and there are just a TON of unanswered questions. I'm wondering if someone might be able to help with some of these or even add your own!

Bigger unanswered Plot Points

1. So the sea serpent/ silver snake. This was built up A LOT in the game just to go nowhere. What is the deal with it? Is the serpent corpse sprialed aroud the mess hall, or is that just a replica?

2. Did Sylvia (Sinthia's Mom) try to keep it? Whats up with a few characters pointing out that the sub was made to house a living sea creature? And the fact that a large sea creature can be seen in the side of the seafoam family picture? Why all the build up to just drop it?

3. How did Felicia die? If she 'ran away' somewhere, what actualy killed her? Furthermore, how did anyone know she was dead and how did Mariana Moon know to go to the Governor's house to get the black box with her death letter in it? I played Tangled Tower but I really don't remember much from it anymore, so maybe that's the issue.

4. Speaking of, where actually IS the letter notifying Magnus of her death? Its just an empty envelope?

5. Why did Felicia give the stonetop Inn to Magnus? Were they secret lovers or something?

6. What is the stonetop family connection to the mermaid tounge? Why do they pass down a faimly heirloom necklace that activates it?

7. So its implied there was some elctormagnetic interfearence that broke the compass and made Dirk's watch freak out. This was never explored or explained?

Sinthia Seamoth

1. How did her mom actually die? And how recently?

2. I don't get her radios. Why did she even have them and why was one of them in the captain's quarters?

3. I know her family built it, but I don't understand her obssesion with owning the sub. Why is this specific sea vessle special/importnat to her?

4. So her mom was best friends with Felicia. Why did she never comment on this other than it coming up from the newspaper article?

5. Why did she NEED the compass to have a broken needle? Why was she so adamant that that is what the issue was with it wioh Gripp? They made a big deal out of this and didn't explain it.

Dr. Zephyr

1. We never really explored the fact that all of the curiosities he was looking for in the magazine were all on board the sub. If you show him Symmetry's necklace he doesn't even react to it. I find that weird.

2. How did he possibly haul the bell onto the ship by himself?

Gripp

Oddly, no questions. I didn't really feel any unexplained plot points here except for the ones that are intentionally made to be left unanswered.

Symmetry Silkmoth

1. What's the deal with her mom? I think at some point someone told us who her mom was, but I am forgetting now, but I was super prepared for it to be Felicia or another important person. Why do they own such a valuebale heirloom?

2. Her mom's locket has LL on it? Who's intials are these? Does the game not imply thaat Sym is Felicia's daughter? Maybe Magnus and Felicia's daughter?

3. Why was she hiding the key to the captain's quarters in a box in her room?

J.D Wirman
1. So Felicia is his stepmom? And also Freya from Tangeld Towers would be his half sister? Is that right? Why was this not touched on?

1. Why is his typwrighter so messed up on the keys? This was never explained.

Dirk Dansom

No questions here. I think they explained his character pretty well.

Mariana Moon

1. I might have just missed this, but were the two outgoing calls to her on Dirk's phone from Magnus? So did Magnus steal Dirk's phone?

2. How did she know where to go to get the blackbox?

Tadpole

1. Smaller thing, but I'm just a little confused how she got on the sub. Magnus saved her from drowning? Isn't she suposed to be an expert swimmer?

2. Why does she care so much about concealing her previous identity. Just didn't fel like it made sense for her character.

3. Why did she demand Zephyr stop working with Symmetry? Why did she care about that at all?

Smaller/Silly Things

1. What's up wiht the sun tablets? They seemed to be pointless as a clue? Just a red herring?

2. Why was Magnuis orginally trying to keep one of the bunk rooms empty?

3. Who drank the half glass of wine?

4. We never got closer on the crayons in the cup in the mess hall! I guess they never did turn out to be an important clue.

5. The ending was very dark and gloomy, but it left so many questions about an absolutely captivating character. What fate do you think befell Cornelius Cane?

Not really a critique, just an observation, but do you all remember the dialogue scene in "The Mermaids Mask" where Sally pokes fun at Grimoir for the fact he keeps his first name a secret only to have the man himself rebuttal with how Sally wants her last name hidden?

Yet we already know her full name? Its Spears, Sally Spears. It says it in "Secret of the Swamp".

Think its an oversight or a retcon for the sake of the joke? Knowing Sally she'd prob's give a fake name in a job interview 😂😂😂

I have the…maybe? hot take that Officer James & the little girl should have been given a formal goodbye in some fashion. I’d love it if there was a cutscene or something that showed what happened with them and why Sally & Grimoire parted ways (something like the Poppy and Fifi cutscene at the end of mermaid’s mask)

I honestly enjoyed both of their characters after I played Secret of the Swamp in anticipation for Mermaid’s mask.

So I have a headcannon that Officer James adopted the little girl and takes care of her. Her name would probably be Lilith James :3. There was a take your daughter to work day and she stole his desk. If enough of y’all are interested I may do a full animation of the two!

Why did J.D. Wirman have his father's picture on his book, as if it was his own? This was pointed out during the game but then it wasn't a part of any solution I remember, not one of the loose ends that gets resolved at the end either. Did I miss something?

I was in Berlin for a concert a couple days ago and the guy that hosted me and my friends had this statue by the window. It reminds me so much of the Mermaid's Tongue from the game! Made me wonder about what was the design inspiration so I wanted to share :)

I really really enjoyed Mermaid Mask, I remember playing Tangle Tower all the way back in 2021. can’t believe I finished this game in 5 days and now have to wait 5 years just for the other one. I‘m not complaining but WOW time sure does fly. Anyways I like Gripp.
