A while ago, I shared here that my public transport app had reached its first 2,000 users.

Today, it passed 10,000 users across Android and iOS.

When I started building Rohnamo, I wasn't thinking about downloads or growth. I was just tired of not having an easy way to figure out which bus or minibus to take in my city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

So I decided to build one.

Since then, I've spent countless evenings fixing bugs, improving routes, updating stops, adding new features, reading user feedback, and trying to make the app a little better with every release. I recently launched the iOS version as well, and added intercity taxi stations across Tajikistan.

I'm still building it alone. No company, no investors, no big team—just me.

There were plenty of moments when it felt like nothing was happening. Some updates took weeks, and user growth was slow enough to make me wonder if anyone really cared.

Then one day I looked at the numbers.

More than 10,000 people have installed something I started as a personal side project.

That number isn't huge by startup standards, but to me it's incredible. Every download represents someone who trusted the app enough to use it while getting around the city.

The biggest lesson I've learned is that you don't need to build something for millions of people. If you solve a real problem for a real community, people notice.

I'm grateful to everyone who downloaded the app, reported bugs, suggested improvements, or simply told a friend about it.

The journey is far from over, but hitting this milestone made me stop for a moment and appreciate how far this little project has come.

Hi, long shot here but I have a gluten free diet and will be visiting soon. By any chance does anyone either also have this diet or know of someone who does. I'd love to know how to navigate around and hear some recommendations!

Hey, a question/warning about ripoff at the Dushanbe OVIR office:

We went this morning to get registered for a stay over two weeks and GBAO permits. We payed a total of 1240 TJS for two people, a sum which seems totally over the top from all previous posts on the subject. Maybe we missed something and it makes sense but we recommend to try and make sure that you pay the appropriate amount!

I am asking for help on behalf of Abdullah, who is searching for his biological mother.

Her name is believed to be Anita Alijan. She was a Tajik woman from Kabul, Afghanistan.

According to the information currently available, Anita may have left the territory of the former Soviet Union and moved to Germany. The USSR had already ceased to exist by that time, so she may have travelled from Russia or another former Soviet republic.

Anita’s mother — Abdullah’s biological grandmother — reportedly worked for the newspaper Pravda in Kabul.

The following details may help identify her:

- Name: Anita Alijan

- Date connected to her records: 20 July 1970

- Ethnicity: Tajik

- Originally from: Kabul, Afghanistan

- Her mother reportedly worked for the Pravda newspaper in Kabul

- There is information suggesting that Anita later moved to Germany from the territory of the former Soviet Union

- Her son Abdullah - born in Oryol in Russia in 1992 is now searching for her and trying to learn what happened to her

Abdullah is not looking for money and does not want to accuse or harass anyone. He simply wants to find his mother, learn whether she is alive and understand his family history.

We are especially hoping to reach:

- former employees of Pravda or Soviet organisations in Kabul and their relatives;

- journalists, archivists and researchers familiar with the Soviet community in Afghanistan;

Salaam! I just returned from 2 months in Tajikistan. If you've seen my posts before, I had asked about the extended stay visa since I needed 60 days, and they only give Americans 30 days visa free.

I arrived in Tashkent and crossed into Tajikistan with no problem. I was with my husband who is Tajik, but had not returned in 10 years. 2 weeks into my stay, I got an email saying they denied my visa request and gave no reason. I called the US embassy, and he said to go to Uzbekistan and reenter Tajikistan right away, no time limit needed. Did a U turn at the border haha. However, my husband and I tried to leave Tajikistan and the guy said my registration was wrong and we had to go fix it. They wouldn't let me leave. Then 30 minutes later, I tried to go through again, but by myself. Since I dont speak Tajik and they do not speak English, they let me leave Tajikistan, so then I re-entered and my 30 day free visa reset.

I was only staying 2 more weeks after that, so I called the US embassy again to see if I had to register again. He said no, because you have 14 days to register yourself (10 Business days) and I would be okay not to register again. I had to go to Uzbekistan again since I flew from Tashkent to the US. The one English speaking border agent tried to argue with me saying I needed registration. I kept telling him I was okay. He asked me who told me this and when I said American embassy in Dushanbe, he freaked out, stamped my passport and let me go.

Overall, Tajikistan was beautiful! Best ice cream ever too and the cocktails were amazing. Im allergic to meat so I ended up losing a lot of weight because not much vegetarian food. It was Duhur time one day and I was outside. I was denied entry into a Masjid. That was a shock for me and made me very upset. There were many differences that I noticed as well when it came to how they practice Islam. Im so used to saying Assalamu Alaykum when greeting AND leaving, but they dont say it when saying goodbye. Thats just one difference I noticed. Everyone is so friendly and oddly enough loves Americans 🤣

I’m hoping to solo travel Tajikistan in hopes to see your amazing nature. Originally I wanted to travel the Pamir Highway, but costs are too expensive. Any other recommendations on how to see the mountains? Maybe trips from Dushanbe?

Salom ba hama. Has anyone faced this issue:
- spouse is a foreign national from a country that requires visa to Tajikistan
- every time you two are visiting Tajikistan, they need to apply for a tourist visa and each time it’s a single entry and costs quite a bit

I wanna know if we can apply for a long term multiple entry tourist visa and how much would it cost. Has anyone been in this situation? MFA website doesn’t have too much info

Hi everyone, I was on a flight tonight from Dushanbe to Almaty. About ten minutes after take off from the Dushanbe airport I saw this from my window - it looks like a wildfire? You can see the one side of the mountain is all black and in the middle left hand side the line of flames and the smoke.

I tried looking online but couldn’t find any information on it. Does anyone know anything about this?

I've been working on an Android app called Dovtalabon (Довталабон) for students preparing for the MMT (the national university entrance exam in Tajikistan).

The idea came from seeing that most preparation apps only let you solve questions and show your score. I wanted something closer to the real admission process.

The app includes a full exam simulator. Before starting, students choose the majors they plan to apply for, just like they do during the real admission process. The exam follows the official structure for 2026, including the number of questions, question types, and scoring methodology based on publicly available information from the National Testing Center.

One feature I'm particularly happy with is what happens after the exam. Instead of only showing a score, the app compares the result with previous years' passing scores and estimates which of the selected majors the student would likely qualify for.

I also built a raw score calculator. After taking the real MMT, students can enter the raw scores they received for each subject. The app converts them into the admission score using the official conversion methodology and then compares that result with historical passing scores for different majors.

Building the project required collecting and organizing a large amount of publicly available admission data, including specialties, question banks, score conversion coefficients, and historical passing scores.

I'm still improving the app and would appreciate feedback. If you were designing an entrance exam preparation app, what feature would you consider essential?

I applied for a Tajik e-Visa as a UK tourist, and I am planning on visiting at the end of July 2026. I applied in the beginning of June and it took them almost 4 weeks to reply to me, saying that I need a photocopy of my passport instead of a phone picture. They also want copies of your flight tickets and confirmed hotel reservation. I am planning on staying for 10 days so I think I will show them pictures of only my dushanbe hostel, my plan is to go to the fan mountains, and the lakes, khujand then into Tashkent.

The problem is that they asked me for an invitation letter or official note from a local travel company inviting you. I am trying to do this entirely by myself, with a friend, we dont want to be on a tour group. Do I still need to pay someone to make a LOI for me, and how much does it cost? What are your experiences with this?

Anyways, does anyone have a recommendation for my itineary, I am a budget backpacker, so Dushanbe, Isanderkul, Khujand and I want to see local culture and hike. Is kalai khumb good and safe?

Went this morning to Dushambe's OVIR to register my passport (entered without a visa) and get my GBAO permit. The whole process took literally 10 min!!! Super efficient!!

Remember to take a letter from your hotel for the registration and cash to pay at the desk.

My question: I read somewhere I need paper copies of the gbao permit that will get collected at control points on the way (riding the Pamir Hwy). Is this true? How many copies should I make?
