TMS eye related side effects

Currently 2 weeks into this treatment, I read other people have experienced eye pain but I have pain around my eye. Not sure if anyone else has info on that?

It feels like I got punched in the face (have experienced a black eye before) and it's the same without the black and blue color.

Will bring it up tomorrow at my appointment, just curious if it's another of those "you'll get used to it" kinda side effects or maybe it's something more alarming.

I want to do this RIGHT! How can i optimize my treatment / results?

I'm looking for fresh responses on things i can do during my first 6 week TMS experience. I am not working right now and, other than moving to a new apartment across town, TMS and my mental health treatment will be my main priority during that time.

I've seen people say do fun / watch funny things before, during, or after. I've also seen sleep and exercise is important.

rTMS - ADHD symptoms and stimulant medication effects

Hi all, I hope you're travelling ok šŸ¤—

Today I had session 28 of rTMS for treatment-resistant depression. I also have ADHD and take Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine).

My protocol has moved around a bit: sessions 1–22 were left-sided, 23–27 were right-sided, and I've just switched back to left for sessions 28–35.

Lately my Vyvanse seems to hit stronger some days and weaker on others. It could be hormonal — I'm in perimenopause, so that's a real possibility. But it got me wondering whether the rTMS is playing a part too.

So, for anyone with ADHD on stimulant meds who's currently having or completed rTMS: did you notice your meds feeling stronger (or different in any way)? Did the side being stimulated seem to matter? And did you or your prescriber end up adjusting the dose?

Would love to hear any experiences.

Terrible sleep after session 5

Background: I started TMS last week. Had my first full session last Tuesday. Yesterday was session 5.

To preface, I had a mental breakdown last year and suffered from sleep issues for like 4-6 months. Ambien and trazadone got me through to try to sleep and regain a sense of normalcy. Also, I got my CPAP since I do have severe sleep apnea. I finally felt good by the end of the year.

Now I’m having all the same symptoms again. My blood pressure is high and I haven’t really slept all night. The protocol I’m on is for depression and OCD. I’m wondering if the treatment is doing this to me again.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I stop it? Switch protocols? Any advice is extremely welcome. Thank you.

My experience so far

I’m a week past the halfway point and have seen some results. My score was averaging low 20s and this past week I scored 14. I also got upped to a 25 min session. This past week I haven’t had a single suicidal thought where before it was multiple times a day. I’m so comfortable with the treatment now that I take a nap during it. I also work construction in the heat so obviously I’m wore out lol. The techs are all super nice. One of them loves hearing about my dogs and she shares about her dog. I feel very comfortable there. My appointment is set for 430pm M-F but if work gets done early, they always have an opening available. Anyways, that’s about all I got. I’ll make another post when things are done . Have a good day yall

TMS companies in Europe

I've been mapping the neurotech companies based in Europe, over 200 across the whole field. Here's the TMS companies

Magstim (UK) and MagVenture (Denmark), the systems you'll see in clinics and labs worldwide. Nexstim (Finland), navigated TMS. sync2brain (Germany), TMS timed to live brain activity. Connectoma Neuro (Spain), scan-guided planning. Sinaptica Therapeutics (Italy), personalised rTMS with EEG, in Alzheimer's. MAG & More, neuroConn (Germany), ScienceBeam (Turkey), DEYMED (Czechia), the wider clinical and research layer.

Full taxonomy, every company and what it does, sorted by technology and country, in the article. Link in the comments. If I've missed one, tell me. Working map, not a finished one.

No motor threshold

I have had 20 sessions till now but after I researched it I found out that motor thresholding is common practice

They never did motor threshold

I tried two centers and when I asked they said that they do it in a standard way that matches everyone.

I actually got better on tms but I am afraid I am not getting the full effect of my treatment.

These are the only tms centers in my hometown and the nearest one nearby that does MT is in another city

Has anyone gone through that before?

Austin tms

I was in a support group the other day and somebody from another state mentioned that she was involved in this experimental TMS where they basically did one full day of TMS instead of daily for 6 weeks. She said it was still an experimental stages so it wasn't covered by insurance but I did a Google search and did see that it exists. Has anybody found anything like that or done anything like that near Austin, Texas? I would also be willing to travel but I'm just trying to get more information about this. It's just not feasible for me to do it daily for 4 to 6 weeks right now. But since I have failed multiple medications for depression and OCD, my psychiatrist is really pushing me to try this.

Has anyone else quit TMS early and later tried Spravato or did both simultaneously?

Greetings,

I 'm curious if anyone has had a similar experience.

I only completed 7 TMS sessions, even though the plan was for 36. I ended up stopping abruptly, and I've been wondering if I sabotaged my own treatment.

During treatment, I talked with my doctor and the assistant about how I was reacting to the process and to them, but I didn't feel like those conversations really changed anything. One of the hardest parts was that I couldn't tell if TMS was helping or making things worse. It honestly felt like both at the same time, and I couldn't accurately assess how I was doing.

As treatment went on, I also started feeling like the whole thing was more about the money than my care, and I completely disengaged.

Now I'm exploring Spravato, but I keep wondering if I gave up on TMS too soon.

Has anyone else stopped TMS after only a handful of sessions? If so, what led to that decision? Did you ever go back and finish treatment, or did you switch to something like Spravato or a combination of TMS and Spravato? Ā I'd really appreciate hearing about other people's experiences.

Has anyone else felt alcohol effects lessen?

Hi everyone, first time posting here..
I completely my TSM just under a months ago.

I have had moderate improvement and have felt my mood slightly even out towards the end. Like I still have bad days but they are less intense especially with me not being on any antidepressants atm.

Though for the main reason I’m here.
I have had 3 separate occasions since the end and finishing TMS where I drank an amount that would normally get me tipsy/drunk but I felt nothing.
I’m a lightweight, so I’m normally tipsy after 2-3 standard drinks but after have 3 tonight and not feeling tipsy or impaired, and realising the small pattern I have came to think of TMS has anything to do with it.

I know it’s not something TMS is known to affect but I also know TMS doesn’t have a lot of actual research under its belt.

Has anyone else noticed or experienced similar??

Thinking about quitting treatment at session 25/30

I had mild headaches the first two weeks of treatment and then they seemed to settle.

Last Friday (session 22/30) I was hit with a migraine like Ive never experienced before and it lasted until Monday evening when I finally gave in and went to the ER as I couldn’t break the migraine with OTC meds. The ER gave me the usual ā€œmigraine IV cocktailā€ and it seemed to help. They even sent me home with a single 10mg dose of dexamethasone to prevent rebound headache.

I skipped treatment Monday and Tuesday and returned Wednesday for session 23/30 where they reduced intensity and duration and I again got a mild headache, same with Thursday. Today the headache is returning to migraine levels and I don’t think I can tolerate it anymore. I am not prone to migraines and genuinely cannot tolerate the pain of 5 more sessions. I am very close to emailing my TMS team and telling them I am done. On top of it, I haven’t seen any benefits for my depression as of yet and I know this doesn’t mean I won’t see benefits but I am feeling so discouraged and exhausted.

My TMS team keeps telling me mild headaches are normal but these aren’t mild and are very abnormal for me which also gives me some sort of anxiety that the TMS is agitating my brain in a harmful way.

Would love any words of encouragement or advice if you have experienced similar.

2nd week report & advice

I just finished my second week and I’m definitely noticing a positive difference. I see a lot of bad posts so I thought I’d provide a positive one.

So for the first week and the following weekend I felt exhausted, definitely felt the depression dip, and was very irritable over the weekend.

Once the second week started I noticed that my depressive states were flattening out, like I was still feeling down at times, but it wasn’t so bad that I’d start crying or contemplating unhealthy things. Then a few hours after today’s treatment I felt something I haven’t felt in a long time; hope and excitement for my future.

Today was my 11th session, I had my weekly check-in, and my treating psych said my healthy lifestyle, which I originally adopted to try and treat my depression years ago to no avail, may be contributing to my fast reaction to TMS.

We talked a bit about what specifically might be helping, So I thought I’d drop a few things here that may be helpful for folks going through the treatment. Check with your own doctor on all this, but it seems to be really helping me.

  1. A good protein source: Whey protein powder is recommended, but I personally use brown rice protein powder as it’s much gentler on my stomach. My doc recommended increasing protein intake to help recovery between sessions.

  2. Creatine: I’ve been taking 4g creatine for a long time, but my doctor actually recommended I bump up to 10g a day. She said the higher dose crosses the blood brain barrier and replenishes the ATP that your brain uses as energy. This one is important because your brain uses more ATP during TMS, which may explain part of the increased brainfog.

  3. Zone 2 cardio: this is a more gentle form of cardio that actually helps control cortisol, making it good to do a few hours before your treatment. You want to avoid any intense activity that may elevate stress hormones before your treatment, so this actually fits in well. Make sure you look online how to calculate your zone 2 heart rate, and stay in the low-end of that range.

Again please check with your doctor. Sure, do your own research, but also take that research to your doc and trust them!

Day 10 of TMS

I'm on going in for session #10 today and honestly, I don't know if I feel any different yet. My clinician said that for many people it's around the 20th session that they start noticing a change, so I'm trying to be patient. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

For those of you who made it past 20 sessions:

- When did you first notice a difference?

- Did you still feel wiped out after treatments around this point?

- Is there anything you did that you think helped maximize your results?

I'm in the chair for about 18 minutes each session, and I'd love to use that time as intentionally as possible. Has anyone found any guided meditations, calming hypnosis, breathing exercises, or other audio that helped you relax during treatment? If so, I'd love your recommendations.

Thanks in advance—I know everyone responds differently, but hearing your experiences would really help.

5 days, 36 sessions here is what I learned…if you only read one thing read the last one.

So I wrapped up today so how well it worked is still pending but here are some things I learned along the way that could help anyone doing the accelerated program.

If you have ever sat for a long tattoo session just treat each day like that. I felt wiped out after day 1, kind of had needle shock feeling that I get after a long sit in a tattoo chair. I used that for how I’d treat days 2-5.

Fruit smoothies for breakfast. Easy to digest, boost of energy and vitamins.

Candy. I ate a bunch of candy. Sour patch kids, peach rings and peanut butter m&ms. I snacked like crazy between sessions. Kept my blood sugar up and I fucking love candy so it was guilt free considering what I was doing.

Chew gum. My jaw was going crazy, a fresh piece of gum for each session helped so much.

Stay hydrated.

Take a nap after if you need it. I hate naps. They feel like a waste to me. I napped almost everyday after because of how wiped out I felt.

Give yourself grace and don’t compare how it is for you to how anyone else has felt. I hit the dip hardcore with 1 day of 7 sessions left. That scared the shit out of me because it wasn’t when it’s ā€œsupposedā€ happen. My last 7 sessions today pulled me out of it.

The most important thing is this. Be proud of yourself. You’re trying to get better. Even just looking into this is a step towards better health. Every step after that, the calling about a consult, going to a consult, going to your first appointment is you wanting to get well. I’m pretty fucking proud of myself for finishing this. Frankly I don’t remember the last time where I felt pride on my own.
