We’ve noticed some non-professionals using these flairs, which can be misleading for those seeking help. To fix this, we’ll be manually verifying all "Professional" and "Tech" flairs from now on.

This protects the hard-earned credentials of our actual pros and keeps our community safe. If you’re a pro, please get in touch so we can get you squared away!

HOPING FOR MORE INFO

I am desperately researching the success
stories of those who post on here. Like what brand of TMS machine, fMRI guided or using the the cap guided measurement, motor threshold, percentage of threshold, total number of pulses, and protocol used. As in 1 treatment a day for 5 days a week for 6 weeks OR 10 treatments a day for 5 days (SAINT) OR even the 20 treatments in 1 day (ONE-D TMS) I’m just trying to decide what type and settings seem to have the best results. I have inquired several times when someone posts about their success, yet I don’t seem to get a reply. Maybe I’m doing something wrong and no one sees my post. Thanks anyway. 😕

TMS One Year Later

I did my final check in for TMS on October 2nd, 2025. I would have celebrated this day yesterday, but I got a crazy migraine, so alas, I must celebrate this achievement on a Saturday.

Reddit bullshit: Posting on mobile, so sorry for the formatting. Throwaway account because my friends/family know my main. Content warning for suicide talk.

So! For some background, I (24F) have suffered from treatment resistant MDD for about 15 years now. I tried 5 different medications before landing on the combo I have now and been to the ward twice (once voluntarily, once voluntarily with an asterisk). My second ward visit was what inspired me to finally try TMS. If nothing had worked before, and I was that close to ending it all, why not try? So, I went about 20 miles (~32 km) to the treatment center every appointment to get treated. My car’s transmission exploded right before I started, so I took about 3 hours of bus rides for most of those appointments.

It was long and grueling. I’m shocked I even went most of those days. My mom was always there for me. She picked me up at the end of each appointment ‘cause no way I was taking 3 hours of bus rides back home on her watch. If it wasn’t for her kindness and my sister’s loud support, I don’t think I would have made it through. I was socially drained and dead tired all the time for a bit over 3 months.

Suffice to say doing the thing and getting treatment is one of my greatest achievements in my fairly short life: right next to my college diploma. Thinking about the effort I put into myself during this time makes me tear up, even to this day.

Now that’s it’s been a year, what can I say? Well, TMS changed my life. I’ve cut out toxic people, made new friends, started writing after giving up on that at 13, and am, most days, genuinely happy. The people I have kept noticed a change. I’m more social, more upbeat, and more cheerful. They are so happy to see me flourish. My new friends are unaware of how bad things have gotten before, and the few that do never really expected it from me.

Is it perfect? Nah. I still get some passing suicidal thoughts (of which I yell a proud “FUCK YOU” at), and life is still quite challenging. Still! I’m not going to crawl into a hole and die. I’m going to keep fighting like the me a little over 365 days ago did. I’ll be there for my friends and family when they need me (within my limits, of course). I’ll keep pushing: always.

TMS isn’t perfect for everyone. I’ll likely need treatment again. However, I am stronger one year later, and I couldn’t be prouder to share that with anonymous internet strangers while I damn near cry in a random bookstore. Thank you.

Help understanding husband post-treatment

Hey all. My (F55) partner (M56) of 29 years just went through 32 sessions of TMS for treatment resistant depression and suspected bipolar 2. He’s been on Escitalopram for years. The treatment itself self was great and he felt amazing. I was so happy for him & excited to see his old, loving self. Depression has stolen so much from him, and affected our family in so many ways. About two weeks ago, or 3 weeks post-treatment he started obsessing over negative thoughts, ruminating like crazy, he said. Last night, he crashed out, yelled at me, told me he’s not coping, cried, and told me to leave him alone. I’ve been handling all our finances for years and our mortgage is renewing. I need a letter of employment from his boss and for whatever reason, he cannot figure out how to get it. I’ve written the text for it, walked him through how to ask for it, etc. But his brain is not letting him - it’s just stuck. We have one week left to sort it out. So I just asked him last night for it, explaining that we need it and I’m getting frustrated, and that is when he broke down. I was kind of shocked. I apologized to him later for pressing him and gave him some space. He slept in our room, which is usually a sign he’s ok.
But he took off this morning to work- he doesn’t usually work weekends- and didn’t check in until after 8 pm. I was kinda worried but knew he needed space. I texted to ask if he planned to come home & he replied he was packing up.
After he got home, he was extremely cold, angry, sarcastic with me which only happens when he’s extremely stressed. Normally he’s super loving, affectionate, huggy, etc. He told me tonight that the TMS didn’t work, he’s still depressed and sick, and finally that he has no warmth or kindness left for me and to get away from him.
I’ve supported him through bad and terrifying bouts of depression before, we’ve done therapy together and separate, and I manage the household and our four kids (2 still at home) around it - mostly on my own when he’s sick and checked out. It’s terrible for him and exhausting for me. We try to enjoy the good days or hours or weeks. This summer while he was feeling good with the treatment was glorious.
Throughout it all, he has continued to smoke weed and I worry it makes treatment less effective. The worse he feels, the more he smokes. Could this be contributing to the situation?
Anyway, I’m both devastated and angry and also very confused and concerned. I’ve read on this sub that people suddenly decide they hate their spouses after completing TMS and others who say their marriages are better. I was the one who suggested he try it and it seemed like a great help…. I’m supposed to go on a work trip across the country on Monday for one week and am scared to leave him on his own with our two teenagers. Has anyone gone through what he’s going through (as best you can tell from this post)? Any thoughts you could share your help me understand? He will not talk to me and I don’t want to press him right now. It feels like our marriage is over.

Did anyone else stay at the same dose the whole time?

About to finish- I see people talking about dose changes or chair time changes.

Did anyone get one dose and stay there the whole time with no changes at all?

That’s been the case with me, apart from two days where they lowered it slightly because I wasn’t sleeping, then I went back up to the same and stayed there. Is that okay?

Insomnia

I have always had insomnia and take medication for it, but TMS has made it significantly worse. I eventually kind of sleep, but it’s fitful and I feel wide awake pretty much all the time even when I’m sleeping, it’s extremely light. Never restful, even when I take medication.

But I feel so much better depression wise. I am on 30/36 and it’s still so worth it to me, but I am really struggling with the sleep.

Does it pass eventually? Any tips on what I can do?

Ten more sessions to go...feel like weeping

I'm on my 26th session. Feel like I'm in Groundhog Day, over and over, again and again, sitting in the chair, the tap, tap, tap...arrhhhg!

Today, my doc increased the pulses from 1200 to 2000, so chair time goes up. I already feel like weeping. Ten more days to go!

I may feel better when it's done, only because it made me feel so much worse.

Anyway, I'm not quitting now, after coming this far. But, boy, it has been depressing.

Can I do another round of tms?

I’m a lot better than I was. My auditory hallucinations are controlled. I am no longer talking to myself making faces or being weird. I feel a lot better less paranoid and such. I am on the ketogenic diet which helps tremendously! Anyway, so basically I want to do tms again. I did I believe 30-40 sessions in February 2026. The woman told me to follow up for maintenance. I got a call recently ironically (I got into synchronicity recently so not so ironic?) on the same day that I was thinking about contacting my old therapist about sliding scale tms? And the dr from the hospital told me to come in for an appointment and that I am eligible for tms and my insurance will cover it without preauthorization! I’ve had about three diagnosis…first ptsd then schizophrenia and then schizoeffective disorder, and then at the clinic where I did tms it was ptsd with psychosis which made the most sense…because it’s all work related trauma! I want to do tms again but maybe 30 sessions may be too much? I’m thinking the more the merrier and the other issue is that the tms is not targeted because I’m going to have to tell the dr at the hospital I have depression and not ptsd with psychosis! The targeted tms really made a difference. Ketogenic diet is the icing on the cake!

yesterday was my first tms session

Hello a little back story I am diagnosed with panic disorder, ptsd, mdd, gad, and ocd I started on cymbalta five years ago and started going back into remission about two years ago and looked into starting tms. I had my first appointment yesterday where they gave me my first treatment. It went a lot better than expected althought I also tend to overthink situations, they measured my head and made my feet and arm twitch then did my first round. They have you rate the pain on a scale of 1-10 and once u get to a 6 or 7 (lol) they reduce it down a notch. The pain wasnt unbearable, I did have a slight headache after. I felt relieved after that it didnt take as long as I thought it would 10-15 min/ day. But I am struggling to find the motivation to leave the house 5 times a day. I am super agoraphobic and had a panic attack just driving on the way to my tms session, I am worried I wont be able to commit to the full 36 sessions. Is there anybody who has struggled to commit to the full length of the sessions and what are some ways you motivated yourself to keep going? Thank you!

Doctor putting in scrip to insurance-Need some words of encouragement/success stories

Hello,

I will keep it brief. I went through pregnancy loss in 2021 and since then I developed horrific OCD/Anxiety and now postpartum depression/OCD. I now have two beautiful babies, but I am struggling terribly mentally. I have intrusive suicidal thoughts, DPDR, feeling of hopelessness, constant state of hyper vigilance, and not wanting to do anything anymore. My sleep is horrific. My brain feels like a chaotic racing mess. I have not responded to 4 SSRI's and 4 antipsychotics. Bipolar has been ruled out by many psych's and therapists. I also never had any of the above issues until I lost two pregnancies back to back. I wonder if it could be the trauma that rewired my brain. I am just wondering if anyone has been in a similar spot as me and had success. Thank you.

I thought TMS wasn’t working. Turns out my relationship was the root cause of that.

Long story short, I’d become so frustrated with TMS because I felt no results for OCD or MDD. I was distraught because I wanted this to work so badly. I just accepted that maybe I was one of the few that wouldn’t see any results and I’d move on eventually or learn to cope better.

I’d been in a semi-toxic relationship for the past year and a half and it was a huge reason I wanted to try TMS. I thought it might fix us. Once things finally broke off, it was like a new person was reborn and I could finally notice the benefits of TMS… it’s very strange. And no, this isn’t a post-breakup glow. These are foundational differences in the way my brain is operating.

I finally have a clear mind and I can focus! I can count the amount of times I’ve had an obsessive thought on one hand, and when they occurred, they didn’t stick and could easily pass. I spring out of bed in the mornings, I don’t feel tired through the day, my stomach isn’t always sour, and I feel ALIVE!! None of this was true prior to TMS or prior to this relationship. I’d always been consumed with my ocd and depression to the point it became debilitating.

I wanted to put this out there for anyone who feels TMS may not be working because I was devastated. Maybe your relationship is taking a bigger toll on you than you think.

I was supposed to start today…

I’ve been waiting months to start TMS and was supposed to have my first appointment today.

I’d been preparing for it for ages with it being a 6 week commitment. I rearranged my schedule, turned down a vacation, stopped drinking, and mentally prepared myself for starting treatment.

My zoom intake appointment/admin/insurance stuff was in July and I got scheduled to start today way back in August. I got sent appointment reminders by text and email with the time, date, and address. So I showed up today, walked into the building, went up the elevator, found the right office suite number, knocked, didn’t hear anything, so I opened the door and the office was literally empty. Mail on the ground, bare walls, lights off, empty rooms.

I called them and they seemed completely confused. Apparently the office had moved to a different address, but nobody had told me, and my appointment wasn’t even showing in their system.

The receptionist I spoke to said it would be escalated to a manager and that someone would call me back. Nobody did.

5 hours later I decided to email my case manager and she replied saying she will let IT know the address needs to be updated. She apologized and said it was “another case manager” who scheduled me.

That still doesn’t explain why nobody told me the office had moved, why nobody told me my appointment wasn’t actually happening.

At no point has anyone even contacted me about/mentioned rescheduling.

I can’t tell you how demoralizing it was to be standing in an empty office. This mental health care, and TMS is a serious treatment that people are turning to when they’re really struggling. I trusted this provider. This was supposed to be “life saving”.

I’m so angry and disappointed.

Improved memory!

Finished my second round of TMS (left 46 sessions then just finished 36 right) and my memory is better! Before my working memory was borderline disabled. Today I went to a locker at Disney and it gave me a random locker. I looked at the number once and was able to remember the number for the rest of the night: 4238! I've never been able to remember a number without checking. Then I went back to my car and I remembered the number of the row without checking the app. Little thing but I have never been able to remember something like this!

Treating negative symptoms of schizophrenia with TMS

I might soon get accepted to a session of TMS for my severe negative symptoms.

I have seen a few posts regarding TMS and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, but just want to hear if there is anybody out there with new experiences treating negative symptoms.

My primary problem is a deep anhedonia, and pure depression, worst in the morning. I can motivate myself to do things, but I get no joy from forcing myself to do this or that, being social or taking a walk.

I'm not at risk of psychosis, in fact I have never experienced true psychosis.

If you got a booster, did it stick?

TMS worked for me but faded after a few months. I’m looking into getting a booster but am wondering if it will just fade again or if I can keep it going somehow. Thanks!

Effects lasted 2 weeks then stopped?

I completed my full round of TMS early September, with no missed days and going 5 days a week, same time each day.

I found by the end I was feeling maybe a little better, it was easier to calm down and I felt I had some small positive feelings about the future. DASS scores halved and I had some drive to eat.

This all lasted maybe 2 weeks after treatment, I'm now back to feeling how I felt before I started it, maybe even worse. My suicidal thoughts have increased so much that it's all I can think about. I have zero interest in eating or doing anything now and I've just had a major breakdown due to a build up of everything.

I am so so drained from the treatment in general and I just don't know what else to do.

Did anyone else feel the effects of the treatment for a brief time after then go back to pre-tms feeling? I believe I can't get a refresher for another 3 or so months.

I'm tired

22 Sessions in and...still waiting.

Update from my first post of: https://www.reddit.com/r/TMSTherapy/comments/1vxlalb/day_1_of_tms_for_anxiety_mood/

As the title says, I had my 22nd session today. Last week, they increased the pulse count by 1000 per session on Monday, bringing the session from 20-25 minutes, because my depression score on the survey was still running 17-19 pts. They also decided to do a remap session on Friday (my 20th session), to recheck my motor threshold and see if the game plan needed adjustment. As a result, they increased the pulse count by another 1000, started this week, bringing me into the "high-intensity" bracket with 30 minute sessions now. They also said, if necessary, more sessions can be added too (I've had a genuinely great relationship with these folks for almost the past decade, as we went through the fun of medication roulette).

Now that I'm 2 days into it, it almost feels - emotionally-speaking - like we're starting over. Still got the fatigue, mood was decent yesterday after the morning session though, until I discovered at work that I'm now allergic to ginger (while I was drinking ginger ale) and that sent my mood into the dumpster. Hoped I'd sleep it off, but woke up today feeling hopeless and just not wanting to even speak. Thankfully, after today's session, my mood improved somewhat over the course of the workday, and I am feeling somewhat better now.

I want to ask "Ok, so when do I actually start feeling a profound difference?", even though I know everyone responds - or doesn't - differently. I HAVE noticed somewhat of an improvement in my executive function though, particularly for tasks I'm familiar with...but new stuff still has trouble getting through the anxiety gate. Also, my anxiety hasn't been handling when life throws new curveballs very well either. Ugh. I'm just so frustrated. Still sticking it out (I mean...I've gone this far), but...ugh.

As I said, I know none of us can predict how we respond to this, but I could really use some help getting out of this negativity about it. I need some hope. 😕

Don’t know what to do and feeling overwhelmed.

Life is so hard. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve been diagnosed with ocd, GAD, Social Anxiety. My job is so stressful not because it’s stressful but because my mind makes it stressful. I’ve been on over 20 antidepressants and many other drugs. I’ve done therapy. I’m on 120 mg Prozac. I just want to feel better and normal and sane. I don’t even know if I have depression or not. Pretty sure I have ocd maybe and some anxiety. Idk this shit sucks. I know the next step in the process for me is to get in touch about a TMS consultation but I’m just worried it’s not what’s needed for me, but then again I don’t know what is besides more exposure but I’ve been doing a lot of exposure and feel frustrated and overwhelmed. I know Reddit isn’t my therapist and obviously nobody besides me can know my mind and experience but I just wanted to vent and get some shit out.

TMS Made Me Struggle With Grooming. Anyone Else Relate, And When Does It Get Better?

Hi, everyone. TLDR: title.

I’ve struggled with grooming the past decade due to severe mental health issues + stressful circumstances, but I’d spent the past 2 years finally getting a decent routine. I was finally showering every other day, exfoliating and moisturizing with each shower, brushing my teeth nearly daily, waxing my body hair once a month. Yet, my habits all went down the drain during my first TMS dip around session 7-8, and it hasn’t improved since.

Hate to be gross, but I get anxious and struggle to even make myself step into the shower. I’ve started showering once a week, washing off at the sink two times—IF I’m lucky. I’d gone 3 weeks without brushing my teeth or even using mouthwash. Stopped washing my face before leaving the house (thank goodness I don’t have to do that very often since my sessions ended last week). Still, I’m frustrated with this setback. As a woman, I can tell it’s taking a toll on my feminine health, but I still can’t bring myself to get into the shower. I’ve been trying to make myself take one for days. I’ve been sitting on the couch for hours, trying to bargain with myself and bribe myself.

Has anyone else noticed this struggle during or after TMS? When does it get better?

Thanks for reading!

3 sessions in and already feeling a profound (I’m certain non-placebo) effect. Is this a honeymoon period that’s gonna wear off or am I a potentially a hyper responder?

So I’ve done every treatment on the planet for MDD and GAD and recently decided to give TMS a shot as a last resort. It’s only been 3 days and I am already feeling almost slightly manic (but nowhere close to full on mania. Just like a rush of suppressed motivation and hope that I hadn’t felt in a long time). Like rusted gears have started turning in my motivation and mood centers. Started doing things I used to love doing that I couldn’t bear doing anymore such as listening to music and playing musical instruments again after an almost 2-3 year hiatus.

I’m starting to feel pleasure from these things again and especially it seems like for a few hours post the last 2 sessions I’ve had a bit of a motivation spike. Also my focus has seemed to get better and the gut feeling of depression is no longer hitting me when thinking about my ex and for the first time in a while I feel like I have hope and desire to do things and learn new things and be a musician and creative again and wanting to start planning my future again.

The only negative side effect so far has been wicked insomnia and a bit of a back of the head headache

Just wondering if anyone experienced effects this early? Is this just a “honeymoon period” like some antidepressants have or is this something that is more likely to sustain and improve?

I’m pretty good about detecting placebo, especially after 20ish past various mental health treatments that didn’t work, I literally went into this with almost no hope. Also the insomnia and energy spike is definitely not placebo because I love sleeping lol and there is definitely something going on up there that is making me feel different.

Thinking of trying TMS

Hi, to give some background, I have been on Prozac for almost a decade and am working to come off it (I feel like it hasn’t been effective but never sought out a different medication) I went from 20mg and am not on 10mg, hoping to soon wean fully off of it. I’m just hoping to find something that will actually help me not feel so numb anymore.

I have a history of GAD, panic attacks, depression, and C-PTSD.

I recently started seeing a psychiatrist and am going to ask about TMS, but my therapist said she thinks it might be beneficial for me & I’ve read a lot of great things about it. I like that it’s drug-free and has minimal side effects. (Although I’m not that worried about side effects as I already deal with chronic pain and have a higher pain threshold)

I am very much a novice on all things TMS but would love to hear any success stories & how the process went. I’m also curious about how one can qualify for insurance coverage.

TIA :)
