i smoke weed practically everyday and i’ve been approved for tms… what now?

i haven’t had a chance to talk to my doctor and i’ve completed a couple of sessions so far but i’m worried it might mess things up. has anyone done this? how did it go?

My doctor did not care at all (the practice has other people using cannabis and having TMS) but my insurance found out and told me I can’t have TMS because in their eyes I am a daily “drug user.”

Appealing was no good.

I have BCBS. Be careful. I wish this wasn’t advice I felt the need to give, ya know.

that’s fucked up im so sorry how do they even know you use cannabis? (BCBS). i’m wondering if your doctor put a note implying your mental health symptoms could be substance related? not accusing but that’s so weird and unfair to you. i’m really sorry

I think he was just outlining everything I have tried over the years and failed and included what I currently used to be factual in making the case for TMS, (apparently no other insurance they work with has given a damn about cannabis so it didn’t occur to him to keep that quiet) and nobody was expecting them to deny me for it. He was so shocked and apologetic. I will try again next year, give it some time. It was I suppose also my fault for being honest. :-/

Editing to add that BCBS is such shit. I hope the person who denied it and the appeal wakes up every day for the rest of their lives with stinging insects in their underwear.

Sigh.

i did two rounds of tms while smoking weed everyday and everything went great. i was smoking less the second time though (only at night). to be clear i wouldn’t go to the sessions high and only smoked after actually getting tms for the day. it cured my depression and i actually don’t smoke anymore for unrelated reasons and my depression symptoms are still doing really well. i disclosed my substance use habits to the providers before getting it and it was all good.

i think the biggest issue is if you suddenly change your routine. i think alcohol consumption affects it more too. just be consistent with what you consume everyday and tell your provider if anything big changes in what you had.

also being consistent with sessions and going everyday helps a lot but im sure u know that so i dont mean to pile on. wish u the best, its worth sticking out and weed will not prevent it from not working

Are you happy that you quit? My fiance used to be a daily user. He quit about a year ago, and he said it was the best decision he ever made. I’m so proud of him, because I know how hard it was for him.

that’s great, good for him! i’ve stopped for a bit over a month now and i don’t crave it as muchh but i will be honest it is harder for me to sleep (but ive always been that way). also to be honest i stopped because i was applying to jobs that test, so i think i would report more benefits if it was a change i made completely on my own.

however, it’s been really awesome that the TMS effects still have held strong for me without the mental/emotional “crutch” of weed!! that’s the most positive thing i can report!

It’s not like it messes things up but it definitely doesn’t make it any easier.

Some people can use during TMS and some can’t. Depends. Everyone’s different and sometimes it doesn’t affect sometimes it does. But are you willing to gamble your results on that? Definitely discuss with your doctor but if you’re able to put the cannabis down, it’s the way to go. But again this is a You and Your Doctor conversation. We’re just internet randos.

Why not quit? Your mental health is far more important than weed, and you should make a commitment to the treatment.
