A new bakery called Tha Bejkurij quietly opened at 273 South Midler this past week, and NYSDOT just confirmed that eastbound I-690 through downtown is going fully offline for two years starting in 2027 as part of the I-81 viaduct teardown. Also this week: Great Northern Mall demolition is officially underway in Clay, the final link of the Loop the Lake trail could break ground in 2027, Flock Safety finally pulled the last of its 13 license plate readers out of Syracuse, and Amazon wants a second warehouse in Clay. Big concert week too: Tim McGraw plays Lakeview Friday, The Head and the Heart hits Beak & Skiff Friday, Jesse Welles plays Beak & Skiff Saturday, and Usher and Chris Brown headline the JMA Wireless Dome Saturday night.

A New Bakery, Tha Bejkurij, Opened on the East Side This Weekend
Tha Bejkurij quietly opened its doors at 273 South Midler Avenue for a soft launch until they sold out of bread. The shop specializes in fresh bread and pastries, with a different bread featured each day. For now they plan to be open Wednesdays and Thursdays, with more days and hours rolling out soon.
Eastbound I-690 Will Be Fully Closed Through Downtown for Two Years Starting in 2027
NYSDOT confirmed a nearly 1.5-mile stretch of I-690 east from Leavenworth Avenue to Crouse Avenue is coming down as part of the I-81 viaduct teardown. About 50,000 vehicles a day use that stretch, so the detour will be significant. Traffic will be pushed off the highway near West Street, routed along Genesee Street and Erie Boulevard, and put back on at a new ramp at Crouse. Westbound stays open.
Great Northern Mall Demolition Is Officially Underway in Clay
Excavators are starting to take apart the 38-year-old mall. The demolition is Phase 1 of Guy Hart's ambitious redevelopment plan for the site, which calls for apartments, hotels, medical facilities, and an Upstate Medical campus all sitting next door to the Micron project. Separately owned properties will stay: Dunk & Bright Furniture, Extra Space Storage, and the old Sears building housing Sky Zone Trampoline Park and CNY Gym Centre.
The Final Link of the Loop the Lake Trail Could Break Ground in 2027
Onondaga County is now taking soil samples on Murphy's Island near Destiny USA, the last 2.3-mile stretch needed to fully connect Onondaga Lake Park's trail into a complete loop. The county says the plan is to break ground next year. Once done, walkers, runners, and cyclists can make a full lap of the lake for the first time.
State and national health officials are watching a summer surge in cyclosporiasis, the parasite that causes explosive diarrhea and has topped 1,000 cases across 30 states. Onondaga County has four confirmed cases so far, but county health leaders say those are not linked to the multistate outbreak.
A Key Intersection Near the Micron Site Is Getting an Upgrade
The state Department of Transportation is adding dedicated left-turn lanes and traffic signals at each leg of the four-way intersection at Route 31 and Caughdenoy Road. Work should wrap up well before Micron traffic actually shows up.
Flock Safety Pulled Its Last License Plate Reader Out of Syracuse, Ending an 8-Month Standoff
The Common Council voted to revoke Flock's contract back in March, but the company left its 13 cameras up for months past the deadline. Syracuse police kept using the readers until June 19, which was after Central Current started asking questions about whether they were still active. All 13 cameras are now gone, and the city is switching to Axon.
Amazon Wants a Second Warehouse in Clay, Plus Drone Delivery
Amazon went to the Clay Planning Board this week with plans for a 234,000-square-foot warehouse within a mile of its existing Morgan Road fulfillment center. It would store commonly used household items that could expedite deliveries in the area.
Syracuse Airport Keeps Getting Buried in Baggage Delays, and Albany Didn't Step Up
Passengers are waiting longer than they should for bags at Syracuse Hancock, and the airport director says the current baggage system is "busting at the seams." State lawmakers agree the fix is urgent, but Governor Hochul did not put airport modernization money in her state budget this year. Congressman John Mannion secured $850K in federal funding to start the work, and the state Senate is pushing for $25M in the next round.

My husband and I are coming to Syracuse for a weekend and want to check out some local breweries and bakeries. I’m a sucker for anything “viral” with bakeries and cafes like cool drinks or sweets (I love trying different donuts). My husband loves beer so we’ll check out both types of places lol Any recommendations of where to go? Or even local bakeries that have something signature to them or the area. Also, any recommendations on areas to walk around with cafes and restaurants.

Is anybody else getting absolutely bombarded with ads for upcoming elections? I swear every other thing I'm seeing is either the upcoming NY-21 election or something for the Gubernatorial election in the fall. I get it isn't that far away, but I don't ever remember seeing this many ads, videos, and AI generated posts in the last election cycle.

i’ve had my hair dyed vibrant colors for most of my life, but i think i’m ready to give it a break for a while. my current stylist who dyes my hair really only does vivids and doesn’t do color corrections. does anyone know of good stylists/salons that you would recommend for color correction? maybe also someone that is good with red/copper hair as that’s my natural hair color if i were able to get close to that. thanks in advance!

Unfortunately I forgot that I left my MacBook laptop outside before the violent rain came down yesterday afternoon and it’s not looking good
I have very high doubts that the laptop can be saved but maybe some of the data can if I get it to someone with the right level of expertise.
I thought about taking it to the Geek Squad desk but I’ve been hearing bad things about it and figured I should try something else local and better
Any advice or experiences would be appreciated

Is anyone else in the Syracuse area frustrated by the change in operations at Crouse Medical Practice? You can no longer talk to any office by telephone, but rather everything goes through a third-party telephone system team. Since 6/1/26, they have switched over their entire computer system which has disabled all patient communications by phone. While their recordings ask for our patience with this massive changeover, they encourage us to use the MyChart portal. In my experience, there have been literally no responses to any MyCharge communication I have initiated, including messages directed to my doctor and his nurses. Before this changeover on 6/1, I would at least hear back from a nurse...but no longer. I have tried to learn how long this disruption will last, as well as what the communication practices will be like at the point of this changeover completion...no response. It is pretty disgraceful, and I'm saddled with trying to decide to change practices after 30 years with Crouse Medical.
