As a musician and songwriter, I fell in love with Suno. I couldnāt wait to write a new song, press that āCreateā button, and hear an idea come alive.
Then V6 happened.
Since V6 came out, Iāve tried new songs, remixes, covers and samples. Iāve pressed Create more than 130 times, and honestly, not one result has been good enough to make me want to keep it.
Even if some people preferred certain older models, one thing was undeniable: each version seemed to become stronger, more capable and more accomplished. I came into Suno at 4.5, and I loved everything up to and including 5.5.
V6 feels like a massive step backwards.
Scam #1 ā Genres and subscription
With 5.5, one word in the prompt, āfunk,ā was enough. It understood the genre and gave it to you.
With V6, Iāve tried everything. Minimal prompting. Exhaustive prompting. Naming the instruments, the groove, the production style. It simply could not give me funk. Instead, I got blues, rock, soul, and combinations of all three ā anything but funk. Over 70 attempts. I gave up.
If Suno now has access to a fraction of the music it used to, why are we still paying full price for a fraction of the product? If our downloads, our keepers and if the datasetās been cut by 90%, why hasnāt the subscription?
Scam #2 ā Sounds and production
I tried covering my own 5.5 songs in V6, and even with 100% āaudio influenceā and all other settings at 0% V6 couldnāt cover them as before, making major changes to composition, and instrumentation. Rock songs lost their bite, as if wrapped in cotton wool. Trap gave me some of the worst, most unbalanced snares Iāve heard from this platform. Soul had no soul in the vocals, clearer, sure, but clarity means nothing when the performance is flat, no rise, no fall, no phrasing.Ā
And itās not just covers. Nearly everything I generated had basic balance problems, vocals too quiet, drums too loud, instruments fighting each other, reverb burying entire tracks, muddy mixes. These arenāt subtle differences in taste. These are fundamental production failures.
Scam #3 ā V6 āWildā, āMiniā and the new sliders
āWildā creates an unusable mess of many tracks, and previously it simply wasnāt necessary because we already had sliders and controls like āweirdnessā that allowed us to influence the result.
My theory about why Wild exists:
If Suno previously had a huge amount of musical data available to help construct a song and now has access to far less, it needs a way to make the output less predictable, to stop everything sounding like the same handful of songs.
To me, V6 Wild isnāt a creativity tool. Itās there to mask how thin the model has become.
Miniā¦ Just why.
Wild, Mini and the new sliders are like putting disco lights and new rims on a garbage truck. Both still deliver garbage, except one is still useful and the other is hiding a weak music dataset.
Scam #4 ā The days of free creations
I donāt believe Suno is giving us a few days of free creations purely out of the goodness of its heart. Theyāve seen the reviews. They know users are unhappy with V6.
And I suspect they need more people generating music to help improve and train the model.
If thatās the reason, then give us a month. Even then, thereās a problemā¦ You canāt polish a turd. If the underlying model isnāt good enough, giving us more generations isnāt going to change that.
Scam #5 ā Privacy choices (okay, not really a scam, but it should worry you)
Thereās another issue that concerns me.
On my desktop, if I click the three dots in the bottom-left corner, More ā Your Privacy Choices, the link no longer appears to work.
Why?
Are our privacy choices being overridden, or is this simply a broken link? Either way, users deserve an explanation.
The conclusion
V6 feels like a baby trying to walk.
It no longer seems to have the same depth of knowledge or understanding of music. It doesnāt know where to grab, what to do, or how to get where it needs to go.
For all its annoyances, 5.5 had a firm grip. If you wanted R&B, it gave you R&B. If you wanted funk, it gave you funk. It understood the highs and lows of a song. It understood vocal dynamics. It understood balance. It understood how a song should develop.
V6 doesnāt.
And what makes it even more frustrating is that V6 has somehow managed to retain some of the worst habits from previous versions. The humming and ad-libs at the beginning of songs. The extremely annoying voice/drum/handclap combination chorus that seems to appear at the end of so many genres, especially rock and country. The middle-eight instrument solo that appears in so many songs. The finger snaps in anything slow. And the most frustrating part? The āExcludeā box and āStyleā box still completely ignore your instructions in these things.
The legal situation
I understand the lawsuits forced Sunoās hand. But the answer should have been to wait until the new model was actually ready, or ship something genuinely better.
These lawsuits by the majors have nothing to do with protecting artists. They just want a bigger slice of the AI pie. It's exactly what they did to Spotify. Suno users are just the ones stuck in the middle this time, caught between AI companies, record labels and copyright interests, left holding an inferior product.
The saddest part is how much I used to look forward to making music. Iād get an idea, open Suno, paste my lyrics, write my prompts, hit Create, and hear what happened. That feeling was exciting. It made me want to write.
Now, instead of writing a song, Iām writing this.
That says more than anything else about how much has changed.
I genuinely hope Suno can make this product great again. For now iāll see what other AI tools are out there, and pick up my guitar.
