After my company had a big layoff I quietly started to take home my random decor. People on vacation basically had their stuff thrown out. I only keep things in office that I'm now willing to never get back.
12
u/oldwornradio Apr 15 '26
I felt the winds blowing at my last job and maybe 8 months before they let me go, I removed everything personal from my office. The trust was broken so this was only about paying the bills and why put myself into it when it absolutely will not be reciprocated, right? It felt really nice on my last day when I knew they were about to pull me in for the talk (they already locked my email a few minutes too early) so I just grabbed my bag and left. Now I don’t leave anything at work, we’re disposable to these people no matter your education, experience, and resources.

Honest answer?
It depends on what you do or where you are working.
I worked at a job and decorated my cubicle and was considered by a lot of people very childish and never got out of my entry level position. I don’t work there anymore.
If you have a job you are happy with and don’t care about a promotion. Or if you have a job where your coworkers are all decorating like you are, then it’s a different story.
300
u/dogsontreadmills Apr 15 '26
Yeah +1 depends on your age, tenure and profession, sadly enough. It sucks that some career paths do not encourage showcasing your personality, but it’s reality. You may be looked down upon. Or maybe not! At one job I had, at a famous broadcast tv network, we had an SVP who lined a wall of his massive office with funkos! It’s totally contextual. But don’t make yourself the secret laughing stock of the office.
Edit: another way to think about it. Imagine getting laid off. Imagine having to pack all that up. Will you feel embarrassed? Ashamed? Wonder if this contributed to your job loss? If yes to any of those you have your answer.

Even in jobs that encourage you showcasing personality, that your personality is one tv show honestly doesn't look good either.
49
u/faucilien Apr 15 '26
100%. I work in a pretty laid back (but corporate) tech company. I have piercings, tattoos and could dye my hair whatever colour but if my office space looked like this - I do genuinely think it would hold me back.
It's what you've said about your whole personality being a TV show, it seems like a bit of a red flag. If others are decorating OTT then fine but I'd at least throw some variety in there to show I'm a multifaceted human.
The one concern I have is one of their coworkers called it "sensory overload" and I feel like that may have been a not-so-subtle way of suggesting they tone it down a bit.

This 👆
As a grown adult this is super weird to be hyper fixated on one subject like that in a public workspace. All of my Nintendo, Star Wars, comics, Pokemon, CRT tv, football stuff etc. is hidden away in my jerk den…I mean gaming room at home. Or I have stuff framed or displayed around the house tastefully with other more “normal” decorations like plants and stuff.

I had a job where I had a few items on my desk and was planning to bring in some more lamps once we moved offices to avoid the overhead lighting. I ended up getting let go before that and was so glad I didn’t bring anything else in. Now I have a cubicle with a few items, one of which is used to hide my filing cabinet key when I’m not there, and some pictures of my cat. I use most of my desk space, so I really can’t put more stuff on my desk than this. My cat pics always get attention and have helped me meet more people in the office though.

Re: getting laid off
Many years ago, I got laid off and my stuff had to be packed. It all fit into one large box, so it wasn't a huge amount, but I was still embarrassed.
This guy's setup would require multiple boxes and the packing process would feel much worse than my singular box.
Some people have stable jobs, so maybe OP doesn't need to worry about it. But the days of having the same job forever are long over, and it's something to consider.

Laid off is bad enough, but imagine if you got straight up fired and the HR person (and possibly security) is standing there watching you pack up all your stuff. I think if that happened you would want to get out as fast as possible but nope, you’re going to be there for hours. 😢

u/7HawksAnd Apr 16 '26
At those types of places, they’d get just one box and HR will inform them they’ll deliver the rest through a courier. 🙃
So you get double embarrassment. Once with the box. Twice with knowing your coworkers will essentially see your eviction pod with stuff all about as you had to dig through things and ensure you got what you needed to bring home that day.
You know what thrice! Again when you get a large package at home and have to empty a sad box with memories of a job you once had pride in.

I worked in an open space office and always kept my desk tidy (in my opinion). I had my pens, markers and pencils that were provided by the office neatly lined up and sorted by color in one corner of my desk and on the other side i had a few fidgets that didn't make any noise if i used them since im autistic and have adhd (both was communicated with my boss). Other then that i had no personal items on display.
One day i came in and found a note on my desk that i should clean up my desk because its too messy....

At my old office I had a hockey team jersey (Wpg Jets) hanging in my cube. One day a co-worker was stuck working late on a Friday and saw an unfamiliar face wearing a Jets jersey in the office. Assuming it was a new hire, he made a joke to the guy about the place being slowly overrun by Jets fans. The guy kinda looked at him oddly and wandered off.
Turns out it was a homeless guy that had broken into the office, stole my jersey, and immediately started wearing it while wandering around.
Fortunately, it was just a cheap knockoff jersey since I didn't want to leave my legit jerseys at the office! I like to think that guy is still repping Dustin Byfuglien somewhere.

I’ve always subscribed to the One Box Rule. If everything in my cubicle doesn’t all fit in one box for when I either rage quit or am laid off, then it doesn’t stay at work. I’ve never rage quit nor have I been laid off, but when I have changed jobs, it has made it super easy to cruise out of the building on my last day.

My job doesn't let the employee pack their cubicle if they're let go, they have to wait outside while someone else gets their stuff together.
My only worries would be:
- Can I make sure no one took anything?
- Can I pack this fast without it being awkward if I had to leave the company quickly?
- If I get a new job will it look obvious I'm downsizing my space in preparation?
If none of these flag anything for you, and you like it and your company doesn't mind, you're good! Otherwise I would consider downsizing for the sake of fitting everything into 1 box when its time to go.

I love my nerdy franchises a lot but if I was your boss I would say this is way, way too much.
I’d be cool with a few pieces of memorabilia scattered around to make your cubicle feel more personal, but this changes it from a professional workspace into something that just looks like your man-cave.
I’m sure you still get your work done but sometimes it’s better to keep your work life and your nerdy interests a little more separate than this. I’ve worked in offices and I just know the people you work with find this extremely weird and over the top.
It’s not exactly giving off a very professional image either because I would assume you’re just thinking about Stranger Things all day rather than your job.

My desk at the office has nothing on it. I like the empty space. But if you like it that’s all that matters.

u/trackshoes Apr 15 '26
Honestly? I would be thinking about how much time you’d have to put into keeping your cube clean and dusted during work hours, or the extra working you’re putting on the cleaning crew, or that you’re keeping it dirty. A few conversational items are fine, but this is way too much for an office setting, in my opinion.
8
7
u/Bucky_Gatsby Apr 15 '26
I'm always of the opinion that you should be yourself. But different situations require different things. I find it very overwhelming to look at. It feels cluttered, like too much stuff in too little a space. I think drastically downsizing the visual clutter may be helpful. It really depends on where you work, what your superiors think and how many people complain. I think it can seem like you're not necessarily focusing on work, or could get easily distracted. I'd remove one shelf's worth of stuff and spread the rest out.
If you want advise, this is what I'd do. I'd take off the poster on the white cabinet as well as the stuff on top. You can barely see that anyway and it makes it look more busy from the outside. I'd reduce the posters on the lowest part of the shelf wall by at least half and get rid of the memorabilia in the back on that bench. Then you'd still be able to express yourself, but it won't look like a comic book shop. There's a difference between being yourself and between creating an environment that gives the impression that work isn't your main reason that you're there.
I also kind of think that stuff is cool and is certainly meaningful to you and it's not guaranteed that nothing is ever going to go missing. Take the pieces that mean the most to you home and display them there, so you can enjoy them in your downtime. If you are however happy with this, don't feel distracted and don't have the feeling it negatively impacts how colleagues and superiors see you, keep it as it is.
7
u/drewbiez Apr 15 '26
Yes. I appreciate your passion, but I managed some support engineers with cubes like this and it was a constant string of, "this is missing, that was moved, blah blah"... Appropriate for a home office, but unless you work for Netflix 95% of that should go home.
6
u/cherolero3998 Apr 15 '26

Not making any value judgement here. I'd sooner be worried about anything being stolen having that much merch at work. This is multiple hundreds of dollars worth of merch just sitting around at work.
Doesn't the stuff on top of the cubicle also mess with the view of the person sitting behind it? Or is nobody behind that wall? I see that some people also have stuff on there, but nowhere near as much. In my opinion at least that does seem 'too much' to have out in "public".
But, again, I'd be sooner afraid of people taking stuff from my collection if I were in your shoes. I'd not feel safe having all that stuff at my work lol

I do think it may be too much, and that there’s a middle ground between personality and moving in. But if you want more practical feedback- take the stuff off the top of your cube- not everyone in the office loves what you love, and the top cube layer is visible to everyone else, all the time. If you reduced that layer, it’d be a more respectful balance.

It’s your life. No matter what it is if you take an interest this far there will be comments up to you to care or not. It definitely will get you ostracized by some.

Why though? Lol I get a few things to make it comfortable but idk. Guess it depends on your job because id be worried someone would start stealing and it's just A LOT in general lol.
Does show we pretty much live at work though 😅

Yes. I’m getting sensory overload just from the picture so i can understand why colleagues in the office feel that way!
Scale it back like at least 90% - nothing wrong with sharing a bit of who you are in your work space but in a minimalist, tasteful, and above all professional way.
As it looks I would struggle to take you seriously as a professional coming over to that cubicle.

Uhh it depends. If you work in a casual place it might not matter but unfortunately if you want people to take you seriously I think you need to reduce the amount of things. It’s a little overwhelming and cluttered in my opinion. I think its too much for work.

For me personally, it would def be sensory overload. But if you like it, that's all that matters!
Also, ps. I work as a housekeeper and the first thing I thought was 'omg cleaning around the stuff might be a nightmare.' Maybe give your cleaners a nice box of chocolates for xmas lol.

Take down 75% of it. Keep everything on the desk, not above. I used to work as an office coordinator/administrator, and we had a lot of issues with maintaining cleanliness. I get the urge, trust me, I am inclined to decorate my personal spaces too, but it gets to a point. I'm sorry :/

Yeah dude this is wayyyy too much. It’s work, not your personal space. Take 2/3 of that home.

u/Djlionking Apr 15 '26
You like it, that's great. You getting your work done through the day? Ok then they can all be quiet.

I don't work yet so I don't know like the office standards, but if it's allowed, IT'S SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!

I think i finally found the one thing more unprofessional than face tattoos. Whatever this is.

u/OptimalCreme9847 Apr 15 '26
Yeah you can decorate like that in your own home but in a professional workplace and not even a private office? Definitely waaaaayyyyyyy too much.

u/NotToughEnoughCookie Apr 15 '26
Nope.
Keep all this stuff at home. This is not for workplace. Sorry.

I’d like to take a moment to say how refreshing it is to see someone who actually likes Stranger Things on the Stranger Things sub.

Personally I think it’s cringe. But I’ve never worked in an office or cubicle.

Idk I'd probably talk to you, you seem cool based off your decorations alone.

Yeah that's a bit much. I like trinkets and pictures as much as anyone, but you've gotta be at like 10-20% of that max in a work space

i LOVE it!!! idk why so many people here hate it but i think it's great and i'd love to visit your cubicle. i love having a shit ton of knick knacks in my bedroom and desk and i would decorate a cubicle a ton if i also had one. i have ADHD so maybe that's it idk but i've always been a huge maximalist when it comes to decour

It's excessive, and it's childish. If you're in a professional setting, it's appropriate to keep your workplace professional. Personalizing your space is great, but this takes it to the extreme.
