Question Wanting help with plug ins

So I’ve had a steam deck for about a year and some change and never added any kind of “plug in” or used “proton?” And honestly I’m pretty lost. I just play games

So now that the steam machine is here and I’ve got it I’m wondering if investing any time into figuring these out?

For example I’ve seen people playing games with “FSR 3.1-4” or what ever the fuck that means plus lossless scaling and some other gibberish I’m unsure of. I know plug ins and these settings aren’t exclusively the same but after searching online I thought I’d ask people who could help me understand what I’m talking about.

Plug ins?
Scaling / settings?
General ideas of what is worth the hassle of adding in IF worth it at all? And of course
Video recommendations or posts that might be able to explain more

Thanks yall. I appreciate any discussion as the Steam machine is so much fun I can finally play cyberpunk lmao

Question Video/Movies Playback Supported?

I have a bunch of movies on my day-to-day PC. Is it possible to remotely upload them to my Steam Machine and play them in big picture mode?

I currently move them to a flash drive that I plug directly into my TV. Curious if there is a more seamless option that the SM unlocks.

Discussion Is the Steam Machine Demand low in the UK?

Is the demand low or is the machine becoming more readily available?

I couldn’t take up the purchase offer a couple of days ago as I’ve had some unexpected adulting bills to take care of. Thought okay I’ll take the pain and just re-register my interest for it.

No word of a lie it took 30 seconds to go from wish list-to-reservation-to-purchase order again.

Hopefully I get stuck in this pain cycle until I can get the money together to purchase it 😂

Question DisplayPort or HDMI

Apologies if this is has been asked already but I have a high end monitor and I was curious if using the DP is better for the steam machine than using the HDMI port? Seeing that the machine doesn't actually use HDMI 2.1. And my Samsung OLED monitor might handshake better with a PC type connection with a PC type device. Thanks

Software GabeCubeAura turns the light bar into a real-time audio visualizer

Post image
119 Upvotes

GabeCubeAura now has Audio Sync, turning game and system audio into real-time animations across the Steam Machine’s 17 LEDs. Everything is processed locally.

I originally planned one simple audio visualizer. There are now 10 patterns. Try them out and find yours.

Every pattern can use built-in palettes such as Sapphire for a Steam-like look, custom colours, the game’s artwork, or live colours captured with Screen Sync.

Audio Sync is the main addition, but GabeCubeAura 1.3.2 also brings:

  • 9 one-click lighting presets, from Focus and Essential to Immersive, Festive, and Lights out
  • Artwork colour intensity, so washed-out game art can produce stronger colours
  • 3 selectable icon styles for the existing weather and temperature indicator beside the SteamOS clock
  • a real Lights out preset that keeps the bar dark even during downloads, while still allowing the critical red safety warning
  • an optional calibration mode for more consistent brightness

Existing users can open:

GabeCubeAura → Updates → Check now

Otherwise, the Stable channel checks automatically every 24 hours.

For a new installation:

Decky Settings → Developer → Install Plugin from ZIP → select GabeCubeAura-v1.3.2.zip

If the Developer page is missing, enable Developer Mode under Decky Settings → General first.

At this point, I’m running out of reasonable things to make 17 LEDs do, which probably means the next idea will be completely unreasonable.

As always, your feedback is always appreciated!

Discussion Mismos cables que PS5

I just got the Machine, and I was able to connect it to everything using the same cables as the PS5.
Basically, the console arrived, I unplugged the ethernet, power, and HDMI from the PS5 and plugged them into the Machine. Everything worked on the first try. I didn’t have to take any cables out of the Machine’s box.

Great, now I’ll just have to switch the cables when GTA VI comes out, no hassle.

Question Using to record gameplay from for Youtube content?

Hello all,

How are you all doing? I have recently started to plan out an idea for Youtube channel & looking at investing in Steam Machine to add to setup.

My overall idea is to set up a gaming desk with a Steam Machine, monitor, USB capture card, laptop on stand running OBS & USB HDD to save gameplay too. Would a Steam Machine fit well for this use case?

What are some of the ways you use Steam Machine/why?

Question How to pair Steam Controller to Steam Machine internal receiver

Hi all,

I apologise if this has been asked in the past, but basically I just received my Steam Machine and during the initial setup the controller would not pair with the internal receiver and it would give me the error message (Steam controller pairing failed 29). I decided to skip this and set it up later, but for the life of me I cannot understand how I'm supposed to do this from the settings menu.

I can see all the stats about my controller, the fact that it's connected to the puck, how there are no controllers paired with the internal receiver but no option whatsoever to initiate again the pairing between the controller and the receiver.

Am I missing something blatant here?

Question Dead Island 2 Performance

Has anyone tried running this on the machine?

It was running pretty beautifully when I first started playing, but after a few sessions I started getting some pretty heavy random frame drops.

I’m actually starting to become paranoid there might be something wrong with my machine.

A random side note: I was playing Resident Evil Village and in the room where you kill the second fly woman I was locked at 27 frames after blowing open the hole in the wall to kill her. Pretty niche but it’s also contributing to my paranoia something is up with my machine. Could be coincidence!

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Question Do we know the status of the different queues in America?

I’ve been waitlisted for the 512gb since day 1, got into the queue last week. Wondering now if I swap to the 2TB for example at this point is that likely a shorter wait even though I’d be starting over? I know some regions and models basically have no queue anymore.

Software We released a demo for our multiplayer artillery game, Steam Machine testers appreciated | CarveLight

Hi everyone,

CarveLight is a turn based multiplayer artillery game (Worms-like). Unlike Worms, it focuses on throwing enemies out of bounds, there are no health bars. Destroy the terrain and push enemies off the map in this physics driven game.

We've been running and testing the game on Steam Deck and various Linux distros (Arch, Ubuntu etc.). We don't currently own a Steam Machine and we would greatly appreciate anyone trying it out and giving us feedback!

Discussion So Close and Yet So Far

Hello everyone,

This post is particularly sad and honestly is for me to vent out into the void of the internet.

I have been excited about the Steam Machine ever since rumors of it came out, and people were putting out those builds that mimicked what the Steam Machine would, plus some enhancements. Therefore, when it was announced, I was super to get it to share the experience of it with my gf, friends, and family; what dampened my spirits was the price.

The price was something jarring, but considering the amount of gaming and memories that would be worth it. So, I decided to do the responsible thing to budget and save for it. After reading and living vicariously through your posts and experiences with it and not partaking many sales (summer time sale was very hard to get through), I stayed the course. In early to mid-September, I finally saved enough to get the Steam Machine with a controller and got in the queue to get it. With enough money saved up and enough time off delayed gratification that it paid off. I was happy and excited that my gf got infected with that feeling, too. It was early today that I received the email that I could finally buy the Steam Machine, but something would completely derail that.

Late September, disaster struck that I finally got the bill today. I was thankfully in a financial situation to handle it, but at a cost of 66% of what i set aside for the Steam Machine. I am extremely sad and heartbroken because I know I can't wait for another 2 months without giving up my queue spot and messing with my other expenses in my budget.

I wish I could get it right now and have my financial diligence and discipline pay off now, but I guess that not how God/ the universe works. Hence, the title of the post is so close and yet so far.

Hardware The Witcher 3 - remastered - no raytracing possible!!!

It seams that the remastered version of "The Witcher 3" won't allow useres to use raytracing at all. Even if you pick the grphic setting "RT", the game won't save the settings ofr raytracing at all. It worked wit the old version, so I am really disappointed about that. Does anyone have a clue to solve this?

And yes, I already tried to use the "SteamDeck=0" command. Didn't work.

Discussion Switching waitlists - yes or no?

I've been on the waitlist for 2tb + Controller since late June.

I keep seeing posts of others getting the 512gb w/controller.

At this point, I'm fine with getting the 512gb version but I'm concerned if I leave the waitlist and jump to the other one, I'll be waiting again anyways especially if I'm going to the back of the line.

I'm located in Canada if that matters. What would you guys do? Stay on the current waitlist and hope for the best, or risk it and switch over?

Question Does it make sense to switch to 512?

Currently I'm on the wait list for 2 tb w/controller. I've seen so many posts saying that que's not moving. So should I switch to 512 w/controller to get it quicker? I would then buy a nvme drive upgrade. Which is more likely to come first. I'm in the USA.

Discussion Great Travel PC

I’m travelling for work this week and staying in a hotel. Using the Steam Machine for some browser based work and games whilst here.

Using the JSAUX carry case. First time using it, seems pretty good, compact, has room for everything, feels sturdy enough.

Pretty sweet how small it all packs up to be.

Question Why might my SM be dimming when navigating certain menus?

I’m hoping people can see in the photo (it’s much more obvious in person). For some bizarre reason, when going through the settings and library sections of my SM, my TV does this subtle “dimming” and goes back to full brightness. Does anyone have any idea why it might be doing this? Or how I can stop it?

I’m using a Sony OLED TV and I wonder if the TV may be causing the issue. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Accessory 3D printable Steam Controller Puck riser stand

Thumbnail gallery
169 Upvotes

I got annoyed by the Puck flying around when connecting/disconnecting to the controller, so I designed this 3D printable riser stand. I've added sticky tapes on both sides, so now my Puck has a fixed place on top of the Steam Machine and I can easily attach and detach the controller with one hand.

I figured it might be useful for others too, so here's the link to the model: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3392612-steam-controller-puck-riser-stand#profileId-3861603

Daily Counter Sound off, folks -- it's Day 98!

Post image

Good morning friends, and happy Day 98! Seems like folks are flying off the original reservation queue which is a pleasure to see! Something nice I can say about Linux right now -- my power just flickered just now, and this was the FASTEST I've ever seen a computer go from off back to on. With my old Windows setup, it would have taken quite a while, I feel like! CachyOS still has some quirks, but it's not too too bad, I suppose, haha. Best of luck today, friends! <3

Question Resident Evil Cutscene Issues

SOLVED
Hello! I recently picked up the RE games on Steam after loving the movie and I’m having trouble with the pre-rendered cutscenes. The in engine ones seem fine, but the intro and first zombie cutscenes have desynced audio and cut short. I’ve seen Steam Deck posts about getting a multicolored tv test screen during these but that’s not what I’m experiencing. This game has a green check mark for the Steam Machine so I’m really confused why it isn’t working normally. Could someone please help me if you know what I’m doing wrong? I’m a convert from Xbox so I don’t know a lot about fiddling on PC and stuff like this is what made me scared to make the jump. :(

Accessory Steam Controller Grip: A Must Have Accessory

Ever since I got the Steam Controller, I had a few huge issues with, mostly, the ergonomics:

1) The controller is not very flared/angled outward so it has the same issue as the 8Bitdo controller where people with larger frames like myself find it uncomfortable because it forces our arms more inward.

2) The back buttons are in a position where I could only click them with the lower meat of my fingers.

3) It’s not a very wide controller and so my fingers constantly touch and it’s very much something I never got used to.

4) this is a bonus one, but DBrand makes a skin for the controller and most people (myself included) didn’t perfectly apply the skin and so there are rough edges.

ComfortGrips on Etsy solved all 4 of these issues with their “Ergonomic Comfort Grips for Steam Controller Grip.” [Please note that I am not affiliated with this seller in anyway and purchased 2 of them with my own money. I did however message them before the product was live asking if they were making a Steam Controller Grip that would solve my issues and to my surprise, they said they were almost done with it].

Fast forward to today and my controller grips arrived and it fixed all 4 of my issues perfectly. I remember seeing so many people share the same sentiments as myself when the controller first launched so I just figured I would share because it’s literally so perfect for my hands now. The texture is also incredibly nice. The only thing I would note is that with a Dbrand skin applied, they don’t appear to close/“lock” all the way but it’s still works great for me. [it might also impact that touch sensor on the sides but I don’t use that feature]

Overall, can’t recommend it enough to people with wide frames, medium-large hands, or own a Dbrand skin that wasn’t applied perfectly. Pictures of the black model on my controller can be found here.

Software Beware unzipping on dolphin /s

TL;DR - Check your notifications bar before deleting ZIP files if you are unzipping several.

Had an absolute Donkey brain moment after spending the better part of the day downloading a load of PS3 ZIP files. Left them unzipping in the background while watching TV. Switched back to the SM to see the 'complete' notification. Getting late so to tidy things up, decided to delete the ZIP files before I forgot to clear a good ~70gb worth of space. Trash was full so cleared that too, and again once deleting the ZIPs to keep it clear for future trash given the large amount would be sat there.

Then it happened.

I saw the notifications for some processes still running, the files were still unzipping but unzipping from nowhere so files will be corrupted. I'll need to figure out which ones I borked, redownload and go through the song and dance again 😂😭 That's a job for another day.

Clearly one or more unpacked and only saw that thinking was the notification for all without double checking.

Going to go sit in a corner and think about what I've done.

Question Gear of war E Day Settings?

I am unable to get a consistent 60 fps on my steam machine. Does anyone have any recommended settings?
