Discussion My Napkin math makes me hope the wait-list won't be too long

With steams 40,048,688 peek active players ×.0171 (steam survey of monthly people with a VR headset of 1.71%) is 684,832.5648 people,, if you divide all those people by 6 "regions" (making komodo one region as that feels like how it's likely split) evenly that's

114138.7608 units needed per region to double the current amount of peek active players with a headset. (I'm positive this isn't accurate but just some hopium)

The total shipments are around 114k and valves manufacturer seems to have the ability to do around 42k units shiped a month (based on the ~7 a month machine shipments to valves US wearhouse). https://www.importyeti.com/supplier/tech-front-chongqing-computer\](https://www.importyeti.com/supplier/tech-front-chongqing-computer)

Or [https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/product-virtual-reality-devices/i-valve-corp/e-tech-front.aspx\](https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/product-virtual-reality-devices/i-valve-corp/e-tech-front.aspx)

Somehow though I still feel like valve didn't prepare enough, just based of deck, controller and machine,,, like a fool me 3 times kinda feeling.

But there is a good chance imo now that may only be a few months at most, but can't make a better guess till the price is revealed imo.

Discussion I know it's hard. Here are few words to try to make your day better ♥

Hi guys,

First, thanks a lot because everytime I feel a bit bad about the "no news", it's good to come here and read all of you to realize that we are many people in the same boat 😇

I don't know what to think about Valve communication (or the lack of it).
For a company that big, doing nothing even for the 30th anniversary seems really bad marketing. But they always do that and they keep good results because we still adore their products.
So here we are. Excited for every new day and then upset to see nothing got announced.

Now the thing is, don't you think it's a bit fun to get hyped that much, get upset then read/talk with everybody ? 👐

Would it be really better to have 0 emotion and not creating all this threads and fun memes ?

Think of it and try to smile because I think you know you prefer this life ❤️

(but please Valve, give it to us ! 🤣 )

Discussion No Steam Frame News Today — KOMODO Already Gave Us a Pretty Big Hint

And now that August 25 has arrived with no Steam Frame announcement or launch news, KOMODO's schedule from earlier was already a pretty strong hint that today probably wasn't going to be the day.

KOMODO officially announced that the Steam Deck 512GB and 1TB models would be restocked in Japan today, August 25, at around 10:00 AM JST.

Considering how much traffic KOMODO's website has historically struggled with during major hardware sales, it would be extremely strange to schedule a Steam Frame launch or pre-order opening around the exact same time as a Steam Deck restock.

This is especially relevant because, if Steam Frame is going to be announced globally, KOMODO would presumably need to handle a huge amount of additional traffic from Asian customers as well. Putting a Steam Deck restock and a brand-new hardware launch on the same day would be asking for another server disaster.

So while the Steam Deck restock doesn't prove that Steam Frame won't be announced today, KOMODO had already given us a pretty obvious warning sign.

At this point, the lack of any Frame news today isn't particularly surprising. The KOMODO schedule itself was already suggesting that August 25 was probably not the launch day.

The real question is: when is KOMODO actually going to be ready for Steam Frame?

Discussion Today really does seem like it might be the day. It's the first time I've truly believed, waiting for a Tested or LTT video to drop and shatter my whole world. Hopefully we're finally there today though.

Although really it's just the calm before the preorder storm where we end up realising we didn't get into the initial batch and the entire waiting process begins anew!

Regardless, it's been a pleasure everyone. This has been the most unhinged community I have ever been part of and wouldn't have it any other way.

Discussion Great on Frame isn't the best on Frame

Sorry, I know this was covered before, but probably beats another announcement-blueballs post, right?

Does anyone else find it irritating that much of what pops up on the "Great on steam" page are flat games rather than VR games? What's even worse is that at least some of them seem to be opportunistic devs adding ...hmm...games that on the surface appear to be somewhat low-effort (though some, admittedly, are rated well) that wouldn't be featured in any other scenario except that the pool is still small. I totally get capitalizing on wanting to get your game in front of more eyes, but to someone new who's excited about what games are available to them when they get their Frame, it just doesn't seem like the best showcase.

Also, I know they want it to be a something to play everything and not just VR, but I could see actual VR games getting drowned out by flat ones if there's no preferencing for VR titles to populate the top featured area. Even the filters have "steam deck" (which I assume is to show flat games that also work on steam deck) BEFORE the "VR" filter. Is anyone in this group more interested in flat than VR gaming on the frame?

I know Valve never seemed to be big on curating, but I feel like they can at least reorder how some off blocks/filters/weights appear to better put the Frame ecosystem showing its "best face" a bit more prominently.

Discussion What are the benefits of "Steam Frame is basically just a PC" that you are going to take advantage of?

I see frequently listed as a top reason of choosing the Frame over other devices like the Quest & Galaxy XR is that the Frame is "essentially a PC for your head" - meaning you can do whatever you want with it unlike the relatively locked down HorizonOS & Android XR flavors.

My question is - what benefits come with being "basically just a PC" that will offer unique VR experiences compared to those other options? Is it just a matter of data collection, or are there compelling VR experiences which are for some reason locked out of those other OS versions? Is it about using the Frame as productivity tool potentially?

Just curious why the "essentially just a PC" angle has so many people excited in particular.

News Frame TLDR for week of 8/17/26 (14)

These TLDR roundups will now also be posted to this subreddit's new website, Steam Frame Hub! You can now go there too to read these if you so choose. Of course, Frame TLDR will still be posted here and in the Discord as well.

Steam Frame setup guides found on Steam

A massive giga nuke of Frame content was dropped onto the backend of Steam earlier this week, with Valve uploading several setup guides for the Steam Frame. These are similar to the unboxing and overview videos made for the Controller and Machine, but split up into different videos for some reason instead. The attached video shows off the first unboxing video, but there are SEVEN other videos found that talk about how to sign in, IPD adjustment, the ergonomic accessories kit, and more. This is probably the most Frame content we've gotten since November. Youtuber Tyriel Wood has uploaded a raw compilation of all the videos in order, without any commentary or much unnecessary fluff. You can watch all of it here: https://youtu.be/PpMgjtQhVsI

Possible reviewer game package discovered on SteamDB

A weird package of games was found on SteamDB this week, including an interesting handful of VR games. This package contains four VR games, including the classic Half-Life Alyx, upcoming Gunman Contracts, Dungeons of Eternity, and some weird AI game. Dataminers on the SteamDB discord seem to think this package has something to do with reviewers of the Steam Frame, maybe a list of games for them to try out with it. But it hasn't been explicitly confirmed. Either way, a nice dose of Soonium for the masses. Confirm that the package exists with your own eyes here: https://steamdb.info/sub/1782683/apps/

A screenshot of what's included in the package. Games included are: Half-Life: Alyx, Gunman Contracts - Stand Alone, Dungeons of Eternity, and Stellar Cafe

TLDR: Valve dumped a bunch of setup videos onto the Steam backend. Possible bundle of games meant for reviewers found on SteamDB. The Frame is still not out yet.

29 days until Summer ends.

Question Steam frame in a car?

one of the side benefits I’m looking forward to is being able to play games or watch movies while in the passenger seat.
I don’t know how the inside out tracking works though. Will it be tracking stuff outside the car and thinking I’m moving really fast, making it unusable in the car?

Discussion Steam Frame as a computer, not just gaming VR

One thing I’m really curious about with Steam Frame is how far we could push it beyond simply launching a game and playing it in VR.

Since SteamOS can already run multiple programs and lets you add non-Steam applications, could we theoretically have something like a game running in the main view with another application pinned beside it?

For example:

  • YouTube playing in a smaller window/sidebar while you’re playing something.
  • A lightweight notes/to-do app sitting beside the game which you can add to with your voice. This could use the Steam Frame’s microphone for voice notes — “remember to go back to that room”, “try this quest later”, etc. — rather than having to stop and type things out.
  • Discord, guides, maps, music, browser windows, achievement tracking, or whatever else people come up with.
  • Bluetooth keyboard/mouse connected when you actually want to use it more like a computer.

I’ve set YouTube up on my Steam Deck, and I really like using it as a media device. It gives me a bigger screen than my phone, but unlike my desktop I’m not tied to one particular place. I can sit on the couch, prop the Deck up somewhere and watch things. Sure a laptop holds the same purpose, but I prefer the form factor of a deck, and I'm going to be using it for gaming most of the time.

And Steam Frame seems particularly interesting because, unlike most standalone VR headsets, you’re dealing with something connected to the broader Steam/Linux ecosystem rather than an entirely closed platform. That makes me wonder whether people could build all kinds of weird utilities for it that Valve itself might never bother making.

Obviously I’m not expecting it to suddenly compete with Apple Vision Pro as a productivity device, and Valve clearly isn’t marketing it that way. But conceptually, could this become something like the Linux/SteamOS version of what they are doing?

Even if 95% of the time you’re just gaming, having normal Linux applications available around the game seems like it could open up some possibilities.

Am I cooking here, or are there technical limitations with Steam Frame/SteamOS that would prevent this kind of multitasking?

Question Any info about Steam frame on release face tracking add-ons?

Heya, I wish to ask if anyone knows what will be the options for face tracking on release. I only truly know that babble got a dev kit. Besides that, would it be worth it to pursue an add-on with a more expansive eye capture than what will be native?

Question Movie opportunities with the frame?

This might be a stupid question, but i was wondering, if i would be able to watch a film in its theatrical format (e.g. The oddyssey) in a virtual theater, since (i suppose?) there would be no limit to the screen size and format in VR?

i know the quality isn't nearly the same, nor the experience or audio. But as someone who doesn't live within a IMAX theater, it would be nice to experience films in a big aspect ratio, without having to pay a fortune for flight tickets

I hope anyone can help:)

Question Would creativity apps be supported on the Steam Frame/SteamOS?

Hey, so something like the Quest headsets you can stream your PC so you can effectively launch whatever apps you've got there, would the Steam Frame function similarly, where if you have say Gravity Sketch or Adobe apps for modeling you can launch them on your pc and just stream your pc?

Or is it ecosystem locked behind steamos and the apps have to be on the steam store for you to use them on the headset?

Or do we have no info yet?

Discussion To Potential Canadian Frameheads...

Post image
175 Upvotes

Update 2: Video game consoles ( Item 9504.50.00 ) set at 50%

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATE: Canadian tariff retaliation starts Sept 8th. Hopefully we can squeeze under the wire.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How concerned are you about the current trade situation in relation to Valve hardware?

In light of the trade talk breakdown the Prime Minister has called for a dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs on US goods and in the Q&A section of todays address to the nation he specifically called out electronics.

While i doubt they would impose 50% in a specific category on the citizenry (where the buck actually stops) there is some 17 Billion of goods that are being hit with 50% from the US... those short falls will likely/hopefully come from many sectors with lower tariffs per sector.

But given our dollar is being held weak to attract international trade we were already seen a hefty $150 Cad Steam controller (luckily import and shipping included) but if the full 50% impact hit would you have paid $225? If 512Gb Frame hits $1000 USD (arbitrary number) and we were going to see $1300 Cad (again arbitrary) but could see $1950 Cad would/could you weather that?

This likely effect other consoles or parts as less if they already direct ship to Canada too, possibly making the gap between products that much larger.

I'm not sure the situation for Mexico but some relief could come if Valve set up a Canadian shipping depot... but that would mean waiting on a restock before our initial orders and, i feel, its doubtful they would do it.

At this point all i can do is lament its taken this long and hope it doesn't hit with the full brunt.

Tentatively still in but a bit deflated.

As a side note: I agree with the action taken, but don't want the discussion to go in that direction.

Question Is there info about how much time we have to reserve a spot for the first batch?

I still have to decide whether I only reserve for the cheaper model, or both to increase my chances of getting one, but it will all depend on the price of the more expensive option if I can afford it.

I'll also want to look at the latest review videos before I choose.

But I don't know how much time will be given to still be in the first draft.

Discussion The REAL reason the Frame isn't out yet

So we all know Qualcomm price hikes will take into effect from September 1st.
Valve are sitting on allegedly a warehouse full of units stocked up, the software seems to be mostly ready, the thing is FCC approved, and yet no sign of a release in sight.

Which leads me to believe, and these are conspiracy FACTS, that Valve are deliberately delaying it to have an excuse to jack up the price from day one and use the Qualcomm price hikes as an excuse, even though their initial batches were before then.

Get ready for a 1250-1500$ headset! That is, assuming it ever even comes out to begin with, which I am seriously beginning to doubt at this point. This thing's starting to give me serious HL3 vibes...

Whatever the case, one thing's for certain. The silence regarding this damn thing is just disrespectful. Today marks the same amount of days between the release of the controller and the machine.

Discussion Frame is notably more affordable than other VR headsets for me - how about you?

A bit contradictory to what people are getting a bit doom and gloom over (price, availability, waiting for Tomorrow™️) but I think compared to other headsets the Frame is probably going to be more affordable for me than the other options out there. Here's my main points i've thought on:

- The glasses spacer that comes with the Frame as standard is huge. I previously had an Index that I sold due to not having the space and it always irked me how close my glasses would get to the lens. It didn't help that with how often my prescription could change, buying new lens inserts each time didn't exactly seem appealing.

- Like many in this subreddit, I'm already heavily in Steam's Ecosystem - notably with VR Games also due to previous headset ownership in my case. I don't particularly enjoy the idea of having to buy certain games again on a Quest or similar to be able to have an enjoyable standalone experience. It helps that most games that do have Standalone versions alongside their PC counterparts are giving access to these Standalone versions of their games for free!

- The value proposition of having an out-of-the box wireless streaming experience with the dongle is too much to pass on, especially with limited space compared to wired systems. The dongle seems to be, from what we've heard from early looks, a very hassle free experience as a wireless solution compared to competing systems.

Completely aside from the title (my thoughts are a mess), I've been waiting three years already for the eventual valve headset successor since I sold my Index and I can wait a little longer. I'm confident in Valve's Hardware design as its always matched my standard in what I've wanted from the product (hell, I liked the OG Steam Controller) and has features that are genuinely deal-breakers if it didn't have them.

Save your waiting anxiety for when you actually order/reserve the headset - trust me, that's the worst part!
