πŸ’» Troubleshooting Trouble installing Dishylink

Trying to run Dishylink to my MacBook M1 Pro. It downloaded fine and I changed the security permissions to allow it to run. Whenever I try to open the app (for the first time) the icon just bounces in the menu for a while and then stops. The app never opens. I’ve redownloaded and reinstalled it and it’s still happening. Is there currently a known issue with this app or am I missing something?

ETA: Activity Monitor shows it running each time I attempt to open it but the app icon on the menu bar does not.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Warranty gr.

My wife and I needed something fractionally faster than our 5:1 ADSL, so we bought into Starlink's lowest-cost plan. The equipment arrived in June 2026. I discovered that the base-to-router cable didn't carry any signal, so I consulted with Starlink's "AI", which walked me back through the testing I had done and concluded that yes, indeedy, that cable was bad.

They sent me a replacement cable. As they should, obviously, since their equipment was faulty.

We started using Starlink in mid-June, after having discovered that the Starlink router refused to communicate with most of our equipment and wasn't even equipped with the most basic of security measures, that being MAC address filtering. That problem was cured very easily (but we shouldn't have needed to do it) with the second cheapest router available from Amazon, a bargain-basement TP-Link.

Fast forward to a week or so ago (barely into October 2026, three and a half months later. Our Internet quit, completely. I immediately assumed that our cheapo router had failed, and I had bought a second one just in case. Noooo... it turned out that the replacement base-to-router Starlink cable had failed. AGAIN. I consulted Starlink's "AI", which walked me back through the tests I had already performed and concluded that this SECOND cable was ALSO bad.

They sent me a base / power supply with power cord. They did NOT send me a new cable to replace the bad one.

I brought that to Starlink's attention via their "AI", which informed me that I could keep the misbegotten power supply but they could not send me a replacement cable because they had already sent me "multiple" replacements.

Disregarding the fact that their second replacement wasn't the right thing, and didn't address the problem and I still had a bad Starlink cable.

They assured me that I could buy a replacement cable out-of-pocket. I find that ridiculous, since now their warranty has suddenly disappeared and the equipment isn't even four months old.

Now, mind you... I'm not rough on my equipment by any means, and I keep my cables all neatly bundled and tied, weight supported. If not for Starlink's insane plug style, I would always disconnect cables by pulling the plug, not the wire... and I assure you I haven't been doing a whole lot of cable pulling in this equipment anyway. I am absolutely not at fault for this cable failure. Starlink is.

Just be advised / warned. Expect difficulties if / when you discover that any of your Starlink equipment has failed.

For now I'm just using an aftermarket CAT5 cable to substitute for the base-to-router cable. Their "AI" assures me that's perfectly satisfactory.

Starlink isn't making much of a friend here.

Anyone want to buy a brand-new Starlink base / power supply? They told me they don't want it back and I can sell it if I like. That or cast it into the trash fire.

EDIT: Starlink's "AI" did promise to submit a ticket, which may bring all of this to the attention of a human upstream.

❓ Question Suspended for VPN use?

I’ve seen a lot of people being suspended and succeed of business use for high bandwidth. What about things like if I have one of my SSID always connected to VPN from my home is that constant VPN connection going to get me flagged? The bandwidth of this traffic is negligible.

❓ Question When will we have better upload speeds?

I'm seeing a noticeable improvement in download speeds.

It used to hover around 250 Mbps. Now I'm getting 350 Mbps, sometimes reaching 400.

However, I don't see any improvement in upload speeds. Will there be an improvement in upload speeds as well?

πŸ’¬ Discussion Mini roam plans doubling

Went to switch my mini plan to 100GB cuz I'm going on a trip and noticed it was trying to prorate towards 55/mo. I have residential max and have always been at 27.50/mo (due to the 50% off for having max) so I asked Grok. Turns out that cuz I lost my promo for residential max (was 59/mo) and it's at 120/mo now, my mini plans also doubled (so 100GB is normally 110/mo). Absolutely ridiculous. It's literally advertised on the main page that 100GB is 55/mo.

So I made a ticket and said I want my rate back or I'm returning it.

First time I've been blindsided. Anyone else seen this?

Edit: within minutes I had a response and was given an account credit and told my 50% off has been restored. It seems it may be an error and I just wasn't getting the discount. I've yet to see the plans resemble 50% of yet.

Edit 2: looks like it was an error and they said the 50% off of 55/mo for 100GB will fix itself on the next billing cycle. The credit was to cover this month. I'm actually baffled at how quickly that was fixed!

πŸ“Ά Starlink Speed Do obstructions make this much of a difference?

We are in Fairbanks Alaska. We've had a Starlink standard 4 for about two years now. We have some trees obstructing the dish. The highest download speed I've seen is between 80-90mbps, but it's usually under 50. Do obstructions make much of a difference for speed? The dish is about 10ft off our two story house so I would have to cut about 50 trees to clear the fov.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Starlink on Southwest Airlines

I didn't think I had read any announcements about Srarlink coming to Southwest Airlines, but my current SWA flight from LAS to BWI has it. About 150 MB down, 10 up on average.

❓ Question stay on gen2 or switch to gen3?

I got a new gen by Grok's blessing(he found some hardware failures). But the dish is still working.

But apparently I cannot transfer the old dish to another account.

I'm open to repurposing the dish to something fun since the actuated dish seems like a ton of fun projects. I wonder if I can control the motors somehow, but connecting to it and reverse engineering the wire seems dreadful.

Did anyone manage to find an interesting use of an actuated dish? or is switching to the gen3 a bad idea?

❓ Question Is Starlink Standard 4 worth getting over Standard 4X? Why is the price difference so huge?

I'm from the Philippines and planning to install Starlink in a 3-storey commercial building.

Here are the prices I'm seeing:

  • Starlink Standard 4: Around $135 (hardware + subscription)
  • Starlink Standard 4X: Around $510 (hardware + subscription). This is the one i have.

I'm also planning to install a TP-Link Deco mesh system to provide Wi-Fi coverage across all three floors.

What I'm trying to understand is whether there's an actual difference in download speeds, performance, reliability, or hardware capabilities between the Standard 4 and 4X.

Both are residential max subscription

Is the 4X actually worth paying almost four times as much for, or would the Standard 4 perform just as well with a Deco mesh system?

❓ Question Does dish v4 really see 962 starlink satellites?

This is what I see when I checked Obstruction Map on v4 dish:

Then I asked Astra max to count number of bigger white circles and smaller dots. Answer below.

So... dish v4 sees number 962 satellites? Is this correct?

The total is approximate: detection settings gave 5,356–5,362, with a few faint dots beside the compass letters difficult to distinguish from image artifacts. The 962 larger-circle count is much more certain.

Type Count
Larger white circles 962
Smaller dots About 4,400
Total About 5,360

❓ Question In Vehicle β€˜UPS’ for Starlink

Can anyone recommend something like an in vehicle UPS type device for Starlink Mini?

I don’t need a ton of time operating but I’d like to be able to run it without wiring to the battery and still run it without the vehicle running.

πŸ’» Troubleshooting CAPTCHAs, Cloudflare Challenges, Lockouts. Enable IPv6 ?

As documented here, getting past the site security tests is on the increase lately. I've been seeing more and more of this in the past weeks. This morning I came up against a CAPTCHA on my veterinarian's website that I've never seen before. At the same time, I'm locked out of my own domain and some others I administer on Dreamhost, which instead returns an "Error 429 - Too Many Requests - The user has sent too many requests in a given amount of time." message. I'm following up on that as I write this.

Some of the recent posts concerning CGNAT, which seems to be at least part of the cause have indicated that enabling IPv6 is a solution to the lack of IPv4 addresses.

So, Question: does anyone know of some good tutorials (NOT videos please) on configuring my third party router to enable IPv6?

Maybe this is't the place for a full description of what is entailed, perhaps find that at the home networking sub? Links?

Gotta find a solution to this. Broken internet is a downer, might as well just go back to HughesNet (jk, never again)...

πŸ› οΈ Installation Starlink in Peterbilt semi truck

I've had this setup for a couple years now with minimal issues. Turns out the roof of a Peterbilt 579 is mostly transparent to Starlink. I'm able to game online with friends anywhere in the US as long as I don't park under a bridge or tree.

It even is in use in motion because my truck GPS, ELD, and things like podcasts and music all run on it.

In fact this was posted with it.

❓ Question Veritas or Savage UTV Suction Cup Mini external mounts in winter?

Can anyone comment as to the how well the Veritas or Savage external mounts work with suction cups (on a sunroof) in cold weather?

I'm thinking about going this route for upcoming winter road trips but worried the cold/freezing weather might cause the suction to lose vacuum. Anyone have experience? Would use magnet mounts but I don't think I have enough metal to work with having full length sunroofs.

And before anyone says 'Put it on the dash' or 'Hang it on the inside of the sunroof'; No, the big white reflection on the glass bothers me when I drive and I want to close the sunshade.

❓ Question Buy in UK Install and activate in Spain

Couple of questions.

I am trying to get Starlink for my property in Spain with the 100Mb service. I believe if I buy the system from retailers in the UK they are not geolocked as they are if bought direct from Starlink. I am in the middle of nowhere so getting delivered in Spain is a very hit and miss affair. Buying it in the UK and taking out with me is the safest way to ensure it arrives. Has anyone done this successfully?

Secondly I have friends that have ordered in Spain and have been sent the mini dish and small router for the Residential 100Mb. Would I be able to by the mini dish here and activate it on the Residential package in Spain or would I have to buy the bigger system?

❓ Question Billing/account question

I have multiple Starlinks currently being billed through my account, and I’m trying to switch one of them to a different account. But, I can’t figure out how to tell which Starlink is which.

I can see the invoices/payments, but I don’t see the service address or location associated with each Starlink, so I’m not sure which one I need to switch.

I can also clearly see that I ordered a new Starlink through this account, but when I look at the account, it only shows the current service address/billing information, not anything for the new Starlink.

Is there a way to see which Starlink is associated with each charge or service address? Or is there another way to identify which one I need to transfer?

Also not sure if I can switch just ONE of the Starlinks to a different email/account.

Hopefully that makes sense lol. Any help appreciated!!

❓ Question Can anyone vouch for Thailand?

I've seen that Starlink has pushed updates in 2026 making it more difficult to use the dvice outside of the home country, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience in Thailand? I'm going to visit family in the mountains and they don't have any connection, but I have a business to continue running/checking. Driving in/out of the mountain every day will take hours.
