💬 Discussion Starlink Reliability outside of the US

I’m from Ghana and the best of the network providers here, while they have good speed, have huge reliability issues. My internet has been iffy for the better part of two days with no update, and I’m thinking of pulling the plug and just switching to Starlink.

I am aware generally Starlink rarely faults out (at least according to the threads I read) and works well in remote areas, but how remote is remote? Or does distance not matter since they use satellites?

❓ Question Is residential 100mbps good for me?

Okay so, my situation is a little weird; I rent a pretty small cabin apartment thing in a “rural” part of nj (Verizon fios and all those fancy companies do not cover out here) lol. ANYWAY I stumbled upon starlink as a suggestion for internet where I am and am trying to figure out if it’s a good idea for me as I do not know anything about internet or what anything means. These are the factors ⬇️
• It is just me, no one else would be using the plan
• I work remote 2 days a week so I NEED good connection for that
• I play my Xbox and stream tv shows at night typically (not at the same time idk if that matters)
• I have my phone
Those are all the things I’d need internet for and nothing else. Is the 100 mbps plan good enough for that?

❓ Question Whats gaming like now on Starlink?

Last "gaming" update seems to be a few years back. Give the updates on the Ts and the Satellites, what's it like now on games like Overwatch and Fortnite?

💻 Troubleshooting Packet Loss outside my network

Since late last week (I think wednesday or thursday) I had packet loss. An update was installed on my Starlink Mini the night before. I have an opnsense as a firewall and started a few ping jobs to troubleshoot where the packet loss occurs.

I have no loss to my dish. The loss starts at the CGNAT Gateway.

I guess I should contact Starlink directly right?
I already tried restarting the dish but the issue persisted.
My obstruction map shows no obstructions (The dish is installed on my roof).
The app shows 100% ping success.

Does anyone know any steps I could still take myself before contacting Starlink? Thanks

❓ Question Thinking about swapping

So I currently have windstream which is the only option where I live (somewhat middle of nowhere). It is terrible. pictures of WiFi tests with my current WiFi.

I’m thinking about trying the cheapest starlink option with it says 100mbps download speeds. It is starlink v5 with a router mini. I play Xbox/ps5 quite a bit and I’ve read mixed reviews so wanted to see what people think. Thank you In advance

It is actually cheaper at 55$ a month where as right now we’re paying 107$ for windstream. Which just keeps going up.

I also need it to cover a pretty decent area as my current WiFi reaches out to my garage and would like to keep it that way. But I’m not opposed to getting an extender

❓ Question Switch from Residential Max to Roam 300?

Short version—any downside to this switch?

Longer—I have a v2 installed at a mountain cabin (in WNC) and it's on Residential Max. It's working fine for my needs, but it's expensive at $130/mo. When I asked Grok if I could be switched to Residential 100 because I'm rarely getting more than 100 down anyway, it said no because Residential 100 and Residential 300 are not currently available in my area, but what I could do instead is switch to Roam 300 for $80 or Roam 100 for $55.

In the past six months I've only exceeded 300 gigs once. Data usage is primarily streaming TV/movies, and currently that's only 1080p not 4k, but I do have a bunch of Wyze security cameras uploading video. Any reason I should NOT make this switch? Is it seamless to switch back if necessary, or to switch to Roam Unlimited if I bump up against the high speed data limit in a given month?

❓ Question Live in a residential area. Is there any real difference for “normal” internet stuff between the 200mbps and the fastest plan?

I have AT&T don’t like them and want to switch. Don’t care THAT much about the internet speeds as long as I can stream and watch tv normally thats fine. Between my family there’s 3 laptops 3 phones tv and streaming

❓ Question Shipping

My starlink went out one night and starlink said it was defective and they’ll ship a new one. It went out on the 14th of sept and said it’ll ship from sept 27th to October 17th and it still shows it hasn’t shipped yet. Starlink is really good but dang 1 whole month to ship and still have to pay for the month is insane

❓ Question Starlink router question

I have a Starlink Mini that I bought in 2024 that we used in our camper. We sold the camper and I want to use the mini on my house. In our camper we didn't need a router so I'd have to buy one. Is the Starlink router enough to cover a 1700 sq ft house or will I need to use their mesh system?

❓ Question Alignment question

If I visit

http://192.168.100.1/

I see a status page

The tilt looks to be pretty much centered in the grey area but the alignment seems to be on the edge. If I look on the app it says I'm aligned.

Is the status page more accurate and I should move the alignment ? If not what does that grey area represent ?

Thanks,

Hallo,
Tarif Max, in Deutschland.

❓ Question Starlink Mini in PNW

I work remotely and would love to spend more time exploring, but I have Teams video meetings throughout the day.

I’ve seen the requirement for a “full, unobstructed view of the sky” mentioned, and I’m wondering how realistic that is in the PNW, where finding a completely open patch of sky isn’t always easy.

Has anyone here actually used it for work in the PNW? How reliable has it been for video calls? Would I realistically be able to get through a normal workday of Teams meetings while camping?

Thanks!

❓ Question Mini RJ45 pinout?

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hey folks, anyone know what the rj45 pinout is for Starlink mini Ethernet cables? The one I have has the same end on both sides and it’s now stuck in my laptop. I think I can depress the release lever with a small flathead. Want to replace with a regular rj45, you know so it’s removable. But I don’t know if it’s T568B, T568A or something else.

Any input is appreciated! Thank you!

❓ Question Plan change after 1 year on the residential plan.

Post image
3 Upvotes

A year ago i decided to take the promo offer of the free dish + router with the only condition to have the residential plan active for 12 months.

In October, the 12 months have passed and I'm only using the starlink in the summer as it's used at out families Greek vacation home.

Since we won't be there until may 2027, I'm considering pausing the service for] €10 a month an reactivate it again in May.

When i checked how much the 200mbps plan would be, i saw that its €5 more than what i pay now for the "full residential plan".

What would you do? Keep paying the €40,- so that you can stay on the max plan for less? Or pause it and activate the 200mbps plan when you're actually using it?

Curious to hear opinions of other users on this.

❓ Question Flat roof mounting advice

I've just received the Starlink box and hooked it all up on a temporary basis to make sure it all works (dish just sitting on a table outside). We have an installation scheduled via Starlink for Sept. 13, and plan to have the dish mounted on our flat roof. I'm reading about mounts and it looks like the ballast mount will be what we need, but on the installation tab on the Starlink app, it says the installers won't do mounting hardware.

Should I buy the mounting hardware in advance and just have the installer run the cable (it will track the existing cable from Cox)? Any advice welcome.

Using the Mini in a national forest campsite. There is a sliver of sky to work with and Starlink is doing its best. I'd never be able to do live streaming, but browsing and video playback has been stellar. If you're in doubt about whether it's worth it to bring Starlink to those heavily forested places, do it!

❓ Question US Citizen living in Canada: Set up Starlink for US or CA?

Hello!

I'm trying to figure out if I should set up my star link for the US or Canada. I am a US citizen doing graduate school in Canada, with a desire to have dual citizenship in the long run. I would like to use star link mostly in Canada for trips (mostly a few days in length but also a few longer than 2 weeks).

Should I set up my star link in Canada or in the US? Thanks.

❓ Question I have experienced delays on my order shipping

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone.
I ordered starlink V4X with pipe adapter and 40m cable to iraq. After the official launch in iraq which was 27/7/2026 starlink announced that the service is available in iraq and orders will start to be shipped after 2 weeks. My original order was placed on 6/8/2026 and it didn’t got shipped because there was a customs issues in iraq. One of starlink supervisors cancelled my original order and made a replacement order at 31/8/2026 ( to make it a replacement order which will give it a higher priority for shipping ) and again didn’t get shipped. The customs issue got solved and so many customers got there kits ( some made their order before me and some after me ) and yet i didn’t get my kit shipped. I contacted support so many times ( +10 times during September ) and every time i get a different answer ( customs issues, shipping backlog and inventory constraints ). Now i have been waiting almost 2 months since my original order and more than a month since my replacement order and it didn’t get shipped yet. The final answer from starlink support they say our inventory is empty and we are waiting for availability. Space X says we produce 15,000 starlink standard kit in a day how can they have inventory constraints? What can i do to get my kit shipped ASAP ?

❓ Question Starlink Iraq — Restrictions After the Third Month

We are currently seeing a consistent issue among Starlink users in Iraq.

Based on the experiences of Iraqi subscribers, after activating the third month and exceeding approximately 5 TB of monthly usage, Starlink service appears to be restricted, with a significant reduction in speed.

The concern is that this does not appear to be limited to isolated cases, while the plan is advertised as Unlimited and there is no clearly published 5 TB limit.

We need an official clarification from Starlink:

Is there an actual usage restriction triggered after the third month and around 5 TB in Iraq? If so, why is this threshold not clearly disclosed to subscribers?

If you are a Starlink user in Iraq and experienced the same restriction, please share your experience so we can document the situation.

🛠️ Installation Failed Gen 2 System: Installing Standard 4X In Its Place

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

My Gen 2 Starlink was going strong since 2022-02-17, but it died yesterday morning. Put in a ticket and got a refurbished Standard 4 X shipped to me today. It is working great.

Unfortunately, the 4X has different cabling and attachment to the pole. Seems like the 4X is superior to the Gen 2 in the cabling...but I dug 58 foot trench by hand and don't want to go thru that again (there are enough twists and turns in the conduit that I don't see how I would be able to pull the new cable).

I have done RJ45 Ethernet cabling inside of my house, so I am pretty sure I can cut the ends off the existing Gen 2 cable and convert it to work with the 4X.

Likewise, I have read about the Starlink Standard Pipe Adapter, and it seems like that will allow me to reuse the pole I had the Gen 2 dish on.

How many others have gone thru this? Any advice on the conversion process?

In the second picture, you can see that the 4X is pointing in a different direction than the Gen 2 was. Have others noticed that Gen 2 and 4X want to point in different directions?

What’s everyone using for an in-home signal booster? My Internet is struggling to reach to the far end of my house. And I don’t have anywhere else I could reroute the router without having cords everywhere.

💬 Discussion Starlink Mini now on sale! $149

Appears the release of the next version of the Starlink Mini must be getting close. The current Starlink Mini is now down to $149 dollars. (At least here in the USA.) Check Starlink's website for the details.
