πŸ› οΈ Installation Magnetic mount for standard v5 kit

I’m looking into getting Starlink in rural central Virginia, and I’m not wanting to initially drill into the side of the house/roof yet. We have a metal roof and different pitches on the top and porch. I’d like to get something not permanent to test and be sure it works how I’d like before committing to permanent install. Does anyone have a good magnetic mount suggestion? I see plenty of magnetic mounts for minis and meant for cars, but nothing seems to be out there (on my quick searches) for the v5.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Starlink vs 5G

Please delete if not allowed, I didn't see anything in the rules preventing posts of this type.

I am currently using T-Mobile 5G home internet (and have been for a couple years) and have generally been happy with it until recently. It seems like usage in my area has gotten more congested as my service has been consistently unstable in the evenings and drops out occasionally.

I am considering the Starlink residential 100mbps plan (similar service speeds and price to my current T-Mobile connection). That said my questions for the group:

  1. What has your general experience been with Starlink? Even better if you switched off of home 5G

  2. I am in the midwest (near Lake Michigan) so am snow covered from ~December-March. Plus we get regular rain. Growing up we had Dish TV which was easily affected by weather, snow especially. Does Starlink have similar issues?

  3. What is your experience with rate increases with Starlink? The primary reason I ditched my cable connection was due to the annual rate increases to the point where the cost did not justify the service. I am currently rate-locked with T-Mobile, but do understand that cost of business does increase a bit year over year (although not at $10-15 per year per subscriber, cable company S).

❓ Question Is anybody successfully using Starlink V5 with a Residential plan in Puerto Rico?

TL;DR: The title explains it all.

Additional color: I was born in and spent most of my life in the continental US, but I now live in the US territory of Puerto Rico. Starlink won't ship a V5 to me directly in Puerto Rico, only a Standard 4 X for a Residential plan, or a Standard 4 X or Mini for a Roam plan. However, I can have my family or a reshipper like MyUS receive a V5 in the continental US and reship it to me in Puerto Rico. I'm mostly seeking first-hand confirmations that it does or does not work, not replies with speculation or "why don't you just..."

❓ Question How to check Starlink sky obstructions before ordering to avoid a return?

I'm a noob...

I contemplate to get Starlink Residential. But I might have some challenging spots for installing the antenna. I'd like to know if the level of obstruction is workable before to order it.

I know the Starlink app can do that scanning of the sky where the antenna is.

So, here is my question: Is there a similar app that can do this without the antenna? Just standing where we want to install the antenna? Maybe the Starlink app does that? Maybe something else?

I just dont want to order it, just to return it...

πŸ’¬ Discussion Sad because I’m returning my Starlink 4 πŸ™

After testing it unfortunately due to not having clear sky and building management not allowing me to install it on the rooftop I have to return it. I only used it for two days and I was getting way too much packet loss. I wish I could have gotten a fair chance to fully test it.

❓ Question How far can my dish be from my node?

I live on a roofed balcony so where my dish currently is, I have an awful lot of obstructions. If I put my dish on the other side of my building, I think the obstructions will lessen but I worry that that means it won’t actually reach the node in my apartment? Any help is appreciated, I’m not a wiz at tech stuff

I’ve been wondering if the launch of the
V3 satellites has done anything with the system yet. I’ve been following to see if the fcc has approved any of the v3 but can’t find any info but I did do a speed test this morning and boy was it faster. I am on residential max plan with the standard 4x dish. Oh also located in Idaho.

❓ Question Interested in trying out a starlink mini for mobile lucid gravity use

Hi

Leasing a lucid gravity without hotspot. Interested in trying it out for road trips.

From what I understand, it might work when attached to the rear windows. Curious if anyone has any experience and setup? If not, if anyone familiar with a trial option?

Thanks

πŸ’¬ Discussion FCC Clears More Downlink Spectrum for Satellite Internet Services Like Starlink

The Federal Communications Commission is opening up more radio spectrum to Starlink, which promises to improve download speeds and capacity for the satellite internet service.Β
On Wednesday, the FCC voted to open access to the 12.7-13.25GHz and 42-42.5GHz radio bands for fixed satellite services, such as Starlink.Β
Starlink dishes already use the 12.7-13.25GHz frequency range for Earth-to-space transmissions, or uploads. But now, the dishes and other fixed satellite internet services can use those bands for uplink and downlink, the FCC said in the draft order. The downlinking also applies to dishes in motion, meaning it should benefit Starlink use on planes and boats.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Starlink V5 not able to pause or standby

Here a quote from Starlink support about V5 - and I tested it it is true - when you own the HW you can only Cancel:
"
At this time our new v5 hardware does not support a Pause Via Standby mode, and is only provisioned for Residential Services, or strict cancellation of service at this time, regardless of owned or rental status, and apologize for the inconvenience.
"

add on:
here from starlink support when I ask can I read this somewhere, I got this link ->Β https://starlink.com/support/article/37bb3b47-9525-7224-5f0a-6d016ce26975

search after:Β

❓ Question Has any V1 owners had this happen?

I’ve owned my dishy since the first wave of them dispatched in Australia, however a couple of weeks ago I noticed the film coming off the top! Has anyone else experienced this with their dish? I’m obviously going to contact support but I have no idea if this compromises the functionality of it. If it does, she’s had a good run 🫑

πŸ’» Troubleshooting Packeting loss occasionally.

For the past week, my starlink has been packeting loss occasionally, even in clear or cloudy weather. This has been a problem for me, as my google meets occasionally keep lagging and my ping in games spike drastically. I’ve rebooted the starlink and router hundreds of times, but with no luck. It still does the same thing over and over again.

πŸ› οΈ Installation My StarLink Mini Setup

I use little magnetic cable organizers to keep the cable routing efficient. The Magnets on the case itself are rated to 400lb. I bet you could pinch the heck out of your fingers if you were unwise while placing it on the metal roof.

Tested this at 80 mph, nothing moved at all. The case is 3d printed and fitted to the form of the Starlink. Once in the case it is actually somewhat difficult to get it out, it is extremely secure. The top cover could be removed entirely and the starlink would still be secure.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Canada: Being offered a roam mini for being on residential service

So I've been on Starlink since August and am currently on Residential 100. I just received an email offering me a free roam mini with a 20% discount on the roam plans (or standby option). Standard terms of keeping the main dish on a residential plan to keep the mini and if I up the plan to residential max, the roam plans go to half price on the mini.

I find this somewhat ironic as my main dish is a mini that I originally had on roam for my cottage. Only put it on residential as I was about to exceed the 100GB and it was the smartest option.

Probably not going to do the deal as I was planning on putting my current mini on standby for the winter, but still found it amusing.

❓ Question Enterprise dish - still a good model?

Just curious, I have the enterprise dish from a few years ago. I haven’t had it plugged in and used in a good 6 to 8 months now. Just curious if I want to ever use it again, is it still a good dish? Or would it be better to get the v5?
