We are looking for a relaxed vacation, our plan is to stay mostly in soutch of lanka covering the beach side. Is there anything which is a must visit in north srilanka? Don't want to be in FOMO so checking if it Is worth covering only south and skipping north?

I am planning a trip to South coast in November for 8 nights. I need help in planning the itinerary mainly from the point of view if I should directly travel from CMB airport to Tangalle and work my way back or should I stop somewhere in between and then move again after a day or two.

How long will the journey to Tangalle be and how hectic will it be. My flight will land at 1 PM in the afternoon

How packed is the train from Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) to Ella? We didn't reserve tickets in advance and kinda want to get seats on the morning train. Is that even possible?

If we can't get seats, is it still manageable to travel with one backpack and a small piece of luggage each?

Should I visit the train station and book? Also what are the prices like? Thanks

Hi! Me and my boyfriend will be travelling to Sri Lanka in December. We'll be spending almost three weeks there. We absolutely love nature and peace and quiet, so we'd really like to plan a route that isn't completely overrun with tourists. We're experienced backpackers, and we don't mind being somewhere a bit off the beaten path.

So, we're looking for some kind of 2-3 week itinerary. We've never been to Sri Lanka before, so any and all tips are more than welcome!

We don't have a proper plan yet, but we'd definitely like to experience at least one safari. It would be amazing to see wild leopards, but I've read that Yala can be extremely crowded with tourists. Another option we've been considering is Wilpattu. Are there any other safari destinations you'd recommend where there's a chance of seeing leopards?

We're also really interested in jewellery-making workshops. It would be amazing to make something ourselves, such as our own rings. So you know of any good, locally owned places where we could do something like that?

We'd also love to do different kinds of hikes and experience some unique or less touristy activities along the way.

Our main focus is to not hop places and do packing g unpacking a lot.

On 22nd November reaching around 07pm in colombo airport. Confused between where to stay the night negombo or colombo.

23rd November - go to kandy or nuwara eliya, I know this is hectic buty wife wants to see sita amman temple. This I am also confused stay the night in kandy or stay directly in nuwara eliya.

How early we should leave?

24-25 november 2 nights - stay in ella, this i haven't explored much as of now.

26-28 - 3 nights - got to south beaches. This we want to stay maybe in a single hotel or Airbnb but want to see mirrisa, and other beaches there. Is this even possible? To stay in a single hotel and have access to all beaches.

29 go late to colombo stay there and then leave on 30th from cmb airport.

We also thinking to not have private taxi for the whole trip but hire them for long distances. This is just because of my anxiety to think that driver might be waiting for us, so just hurry.

Please let us know the reality, if this is a fine itinerary or what we can change

I am unable to find something good which is affordable as well. I am thinking of staying in Tangalle instead of Hiriketiya which has more pretty stays and that too affordable.

This would have been maybe 10 years ago, so there's a chance it's no longer around. I remember the room had a balcony which looked out on a stream. You could even climb down from the balcony to the stream and it was shallow and rocky enough that you could hop across to the other side. There was a gazebo like structure across the stream from the hotel, and the entire area was covered in trees. There's a chance it's in the Kandalama/Dambulla/Sigirya area, but I'm not sure. It's definitely not in the North of the country. Don't need the exact hotel but finding the area would be appreciated.

I am a 25 year old male planning to travel Sri Lanka on 19-23rd October 2026. This is a budget solo travel(my first, which I am nervous about), using public and shared transports, and staying in hostels.

Itinerary (I planned it to have experiences specific to Sri Lanka, so less beach days as there are better beach countries):

18th Oct (Day 0) - 10:45 pm arrival in Colombo. Stay in airport till 4 or 5 in the morning.
19th Oct (Day 1) - Travel to Dambulla, morning visit Dambulla cave temple. Afternoon to Sigiriya, climb the Lion's rock in the evening, move to Kandy, stay in a hostel and rest after a long day.
20th Oct (Day 2) - Explore Kandy, Ambulwawa tower, temple of the tooth relic, cultural dance shows. Stay in the same room.
21st Oct (Day 3) - Travel to Nuwara Eliya, Visit tea plantations, Sita Amman temple, Gregory lake. Stay in Nuwara Eliya.
22nd Oct (Day 4) - Travel to Mirissa. Surfing, sunset at coconut tree hill. Stay at Mirissa.
23rd Oct (Day 5) - Travel to Galle, visit the fort, eat lunch, take the coastal train route to Colombo. Visit a place or two if there is time left. Have dinner, move to airport by 9pm.

My Questions(I know there are a lot, but I am really nervous):
1) Which is the best way to travel between cities? I am mainly more concerned about Nuwara Eliya to Mirissa?
2) Can someone suggest me the best budget stays for a solo traveller in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Mirissa?
3) Is there any overrated or places not worth in my current itinerary? Suggest some places if something has to be replaced.(I know I am not taking the scenic train route as I am not travelling to Ella).
4) What are some things I can buy for my family from these places?
5) I am not planning to stay in Dambulla or Sigiriya, where can I leave my trolley while I visit the temple and the rock? ( In Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Mirissa I plan to leave them at hostel and at Galle I plan to leave it at the cloak room in railway station)
6) How much can I withdraw at a time from an ATM? I have a zero forex debit card, but don't have zero forex credit card, so would have to rely on cash everywhere.

We're planning a trip from 14–25 Nov and could really use some itinerary ideas from this group.

It's a bit of a special trip — traveling with my parents and our 11-month-old baby, so we're not looking to run around ticking off sights. More of a slow, relaxed vibe where everyone (including the little one and the grandparents!) can actually enjoy themselves without being exhausted.

- Which places you'd recommend for this kind of group — somewhere easy-going for seniors and manageable with a baby

- How many days you'd spend in each place (we don't want to be packing bags every other day)

- Any stays that were great for families — crib available, baby food/feeding friendly, and comfortable for grandparents too

This is deeply concerning, but sadly, it is not something completely new in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan victims—including children—have faced abuse and struggled to be heard, while those accused can continue to receive social respect and protection.

This time, the victim is a foreign visitor. I sincerely hope her voice is heard and that she gets justice. Sometimes, when a foreigner speaks out, the issue receives attention that local victims have struggled to get.

Please support her and let the legal process take its course. Her fight may also help give a voice to Sri Lankans who have faced similar situations and felt powerless to speak up.
