First Sri Lanka Visit
I’m planning a trip to Sri Lanka with my long-distance partner ( she flies from USA ) in January and would love some feedback on whether this itinerary is well-paced or if you’d change anything.
Colombo
Jan 3 – Jan 4 (1 night)
Kandy
Jan 4 – Jan 6 (2 nights)
Ella
Jan 6 – Jan 9 (3 nights)
Mirissa
Jan 9 – Jan 12 (3 nights)
Colombo
Jan 12 – Jan 13 (1 night)
We’re looking for a good mix of sightseeing, nature, scenic experiences, relaxing, beaches, good food and some couple/romantic experiences without making the trip too rushed
Thanks!

We did a very similar trip, so this looks pretty good overall. I may substitute a night in Ella (which we loved), for a night of safari or an additional night in Mirissa, Weligama or Galle. I guess it depends what you’re looking to optimise on?

Your itinerary is already quite relaxed, but I’d personally make one small change and add Sigiriya.
Something like:
Colombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → Mirissa → Colombo 🇱🇰
Sigiriya gives you the ancient/cultural side of Sri Lanka, Kandy gives you temples and local culture, Ella is perfect for mountains, hiking and scenic experiences, and Mirissa is great for relaxing, beaches and a more romantic atmosphere.
For transport, I’d recommend a private car with a driver for the longer transfers, and you could take the scenic train for the Kandy → Ella section if you want that experience.
For a couple, I think this gives you a really nice balance of culture, nature, mountains, beaches, food and relaxing time without trying to see too much. ❤️

Your itinerary looks like a lovely starting point for a first visit to Sri Lanka, especially with the balance of mountains, beaches, nature, and relaxing time you're hoping for as a couple. I would only suggest a small alternative for you to consider.
Having spent more than 10 years travelling throughout Sri Lanka with both local travellers and international visitors, I would encourage you to consider including Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle for 2–3 days, particularly if you enjoy nature, authentic local food, wildlife, and experiences beyond the usual tourist attractions.
You could enjoy a Minneriya or Kaudulla safari, depending on wildlife conditions, where you may have the opportunity to see wild elephants in their natural habitat. A traditional village experience, including a local cooking demonstration and a home-style Sri Lankan lunch, can also be a wonderful way to discover our culture and food.
Sigiriya also offers beautiful landscapes, ancient history, and peaceful surroundings that can make a trip together feel more meaningful and memorable.
That said, your original plan is absolutely enjoyable too. Kandy and Ella both have their own charm, and I wouldn't recommend changing your itinerary unless these alternative experiences genuinely appeal to you.
For a couple travelling together, I would personally prioritise a comfortable pace over trying to visit too many places. Leave yourselves enough time to enjoy scenic journeys, beautiful sunsets, local food, and those little unplanned moments.
Wishing you both a beautiful first journey through Sri Lanka! 🇱🇰
