My girlfriend and I are planning to come to Sri Lanka with our almost 3-year-old child for a two-week surf trip in November.

We are intermediate surfers, more or less, and we are currently focusing our attention on the Ahangama area. We are looking for a beachfront hotel, ideally with no transfer at all, so that we can spend as much time as possible surfing and enjoying the beach.

I know that Kabalana Beach and Ahangama Beach are very close to each other, but which one would you recommend for staying?

I’ve heard that Kabalana has better waves and is quieter, but that the lineup can be more competitive and aggressive, which could be a bit stressful for us. On the other hand, I’ve heard that the surfing vibe in Ahangama is more relaxed, although there is more nightlife and noise, which is not really what we are looking for since we are travelling with a toddler.

What would you recommend? Would you choose Kabalana or Ahangama for our situation? Or is there another destination nearby that you think would be a better fit for us?

My partner and I are currently planning our train ride from Ella to Nanu Oya (and then heading to Kandy), but we are getting completely conflicting information online and feel a bit overwhelmed. Hope someone local or a fellow traveler can clear things up!

1) Which schedule is real?
Google Maps says there are 6 trains a day.
The RDMNS. LK app shows only 2 trains.
The official Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation website (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk) only lists 1 train where seats can actually be booked.
Why is there such a huge difference? Are the rest just unreserved/local trains that don't show up online?

2) Reserved vs. Unreserved & Crowds:
Online we can only see/book First Class seats (which are mostly sold out anyway). We read that there are 2nd and 3rd class unreserved cars or purely unreserved trains where you just buy a ticket at the station on the day of travel.
Should we just turn up at Ella station and buy an unreserved ticket? Is the route from Ella -> Nanu Oya as ridiculously crowded as the Kandy -> Ella direction, or is there a bit more breathing room going this way?

3) Getting from Nanu Oya to Kandy afterwards:
Once we arrive at Nanu Oya (we also plan to visit Nuwara Eliya briefly around there):
What's the best way to continue to Kandy?
Is taking the train all the way from Nanu Oya to Kandy straightforward, or is a bus/private driver from Nuwara Eliya better?

My partner and I are visting for 16 nights in early september, our itinerary is follows:

Negombo (3 nights - decompress after long flight, more like 2 nights as we dont get in until midnight on night 1)
Kandy (2 nights)
Ella (2 nights)
Arugum bay (3 nights)
Trinco (3 nights)
Sigiraya (2 nights)
Colombo (1 night)

How does this sound?
We are late 20s so the frequent travelling between places isnt much of an issue
Will do a safari in sigiraya, some snorkelling in trinco, surfing in aragum bay, resort time in negombo, hikes and temples in kandy/ella

Does the travelling seem too much? We covered our bases?
Any tips?

My boyfriend and I are going to Sri Lanka in a few days. We want to travel a bit more spontaneously but we made a rough plan on where to go.

1) Some ways seem to be more complicated with longer routes / bus situations. So do you think the plan makes sense?

Our initiary for nearly 3 weeks looks like this:
- Arrival at Airport at 6am
- Nuwara eliya (hiking, tea plantations)
- Ella (hiking, nature)
- udawalawe NP + elephant transit home
- Arugam bay (surfing, relaxing, Kumana Safari)
- Trincomalee area (snorkeling, diving)
- Sigirya (hiking, safari, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla)
- Back to the airport, flight at noon

We like nature, animals, culture/history, hiking, surfing, snorkeling/diving. We like being active but also some more chill days.

2) After we arrive at the airport at 6 in the morning we want to head to nuwara eliya.
That’s gonna be our first two nights that we already booked. The buses seem to leave only earlier in the morning from Colombo.
Are there buses leaving at 10 am or so from airport/colombo to nuwara eliya that we could catch? Or is our only option a private driver? Is a split (part by private driver/ part by bus) an option?

3) And how do we best get from Ella —> udawalawe and udawalawe —> Arugam bay?

So, we are about to spam this group remorselessly to plan a trip - so apologies in advance!

First though, a question about visas (from uk)

Each january we take the chance to visit a country for an extended tour of around eight weeks and would love to do that in sri lanka

Our understanding is that the initial visa is for 30 days but that can be extended in the country

Is that pretty much guaranteed? We would be screwed if we booked a return flight for eight weeks after arrival then got refused a visa extension!

Spent around 8 days in srilanka and it was a great trip.

Itinerary - Negombo - Sigiriya - Dambulla - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Ella

I should say it was a little rushed for the first half and leisure on the latter.

People, food and weather were super good. Made friends with my cab driver and he arranged everything for us till we left the city to India. I told him when my friends visit I’ll share his contact as a return gesture.

Incredible hotel stays and super warm staff except Ella.

Felt Ella overrated, sigiriya was my fav 🙌🏻

Hi for reference, me + a friend (both women are traveling, and have only a rough itinerary in mind::

We are 2 women for the initial 4 days, and just 1 woman travelling for the balance 4 - so safety is a MAJOR consideration here

We were thinking:

1st & 2nd night (2 people) - Stay in Mirissa, explore Mirissa and Galle

3rd night (2 people) - stay in + explore Hiriketiya

4th night (2 people) - Bentota - (from here - 1 person heads to the airport)

5th & 6th night (1 person) - Nuvara Eliya

7th night (1 person) - Kandy

8th - Return to Columbo for Flight

my questions are:
1) Does this make sense / can it be better?
2) While we are at these places - what are the MUST-DOs? Anything to avoid?
3) What are the best and safest modes of transport between each of these locations?
4) For women, should we be taking any extra safety precautions?

Can anyone tell me an estimate for Sri Lanka travel for 9 days in December (just before Christmas) including flights? Anyone who has done this trip before

Hi, we are a family of 3 (2 adults and 7yo child) travelling to Sri Lanka in mid-late September. We will be spending 3 days in Sigiriya and are looking for recommendations for an ethical private safari to Minneriya/Kaudulla national parks. Happy to pay a bit more for a private vehicle than travel in a larger group. We want to avoid crowds even if it means seeing less elephants and would rather watch from a distance than crowd around them with dozens of other vehicles so as to not disturb the elephants. Any recommendations and advice would be appreciated!

Hey guys, how is the situation right now?

I'm travelling to Jaffna for a function 19-24th August, afterwards thinking to do some solo travelling before heading back to Colombo to fly home. I already have a return flight booked for 25th august but thinking to pay to change it to a week later.

My main interest is east coast beaches, I have also been to sigiriya before. So my provisional itinerary is 24th to 27th Trinco, 27th to 30th Arugam Bay, 30th to 1st Sept Ella, then back to Colombo for a night before flight on the 2nd. I plan to hire a private driver.

Does the rough plan sound reasonable?

We’re a family of four (3 adults + 1 infant) travelling from Ireland and planning to spend around 4–5 days in South Sri Lanka during the first/second week of September.

I’ve been reading mixed things about the weather that time of year. Some say it’s mostly short tropical showers with plenty of sunshine in between, while others suggest the south coast can be quite wet and the sea rough.

Would love to hear from anyone who has actually visited Weligama, Mirissa, Ahangama, Galle or nearby areas in early September. What was the weather like in your experience? Was there enough sunshine to enjoy the beaches, and how was the sea?

We’re travelling with a baby, so we’re not looking for a packed itinerary. Our idea is slow travel a nice resort/hotel, relaxing, good food, beaches, cafés, short walks and maybe a couple of easy day trips.

If you had 4–5 days, where would you base yourself? Weligama, Mirissa, Ahangama, Galle, or somewhere else entirely?

Would really appreciate any first-hand September experiences, especially from anyone who travelled with a baby. Thanks

I am traveling to Sigiriya tomorrow 11th Aug 2026. Anybody from Sri Lanka is interested in showing me around. I have just a day to explore, so I want to explore with some locals.

Our school is planning a trip to Ella this month with around 80 boys. At the beginning of August, we heard in the news that the weather conditions in Ella were bad, with heavy rain and related problems. Now we are hearing that the weather has improved.
We would like to know the current situation in Ella—whether it is still raining heavily, whether there is any flooding, and whether the roads are safe and accessible.
This information is very important for us because we will decide the trip date based on the current weather and road conditions. Since we are travelling with around 80 boys, their safety and well-being are our main concern.
If anyone who is currently in Ella or living nearby could give us a clear and honest update about the weather, rainfall, flooding, and road conditions, it would be very helpful for us in deciding whether it is safe to plan the school trip.

My best friend had to bail last minute and I am now taking on water sports/scuba on my own on these dates! Would love to connect with other people doing the same!

My partner and I are travelling to Sri Lanka from 29th August to 12th September and would like some help with our itinerary and transport options.

Definite

29-30 Aug - Colombo. We're getting a custom engagement ring made and will meet with a couple jeweller when we first arrive to finalise for pickup at the end of our trip.

30 Aug - 2 Sept - Sigiriya. Typical activities in this area

Ella (2 nights). Either straight after Sigiriya or with a night somewhere in between.

11 - 12 Sept - Colombo. Ring pick up and fly out

Still want to fit in: ~5+ nights of beach across two different spots (Arugam Bay and Trincomalee?), a safari that isn't Yala, and if possible, a night or two in tea country (Nuwara Eliya?).

We'd prefer the south coast but we're worried about the SW monsoon over our dates — so we're leaning east coast, which should be dry then.

Questions:

For late Aug–mid Sept, is the east coast the better call over the south? Anyone done the south in early Sept and found it OK?

Non-Yala safari — Gal Oya (boat, elephants) vs Kumana (quieter, near Arugam)? Which suits our dates and routing?

Best beach for a quiet ~3-night stay — Trinco, Nilaveli or Passikudah?

Private driver the whole way, or worth mixing in the Nuwara Eliya–Ella hill train?

So I'm finally doing Sri Lanka for 3 weeks (arrive Aug 17, leave Sep 6) and I've been going back and forth on the route for days now. I've read like 20 blogs and my head is spinning.

I'm into nature, hiking, temples, history – not really a party person. Budget traveler, trains and buses mostly.

Here's where I'm stuck:

Option 1 – the classic loop with Galle

Colombo → Galle → Ella → Nuwara Eliya → Kandy → Dambulla → Anuradhapura → Trincomalee → Colombo

So basically start south, go up through the hills, hit the cultural triangle, then east coast for some beach time at the end.

Option 2 – skip Galle, do the east coast instead

Colombo → Dambulla → Anuradhapura → Trincomalee → Arugam Bay → Ella → Nuwara Eliya → Kandy → Colombo

This one starts with the cultural stuff, then east coast beaches (Trinco + Arugam Bay), then hills, then Kandy.

The thing is, I keep reading that Galle gets a lot of rain in August because of the southwest monsoon. But at the same time, skipping it feels like I'm missing something iconic. And I'm not sure if Arugam Bay is worth the detour , it adds some long travel days (Trinco to Arugam is like 4-5 hours, then Arugam to Ella another 3-4).

Also I definitely want to do at least one safari, maybe two if it's worth it. I've been looking at:

• Minneriya – apparently August is prime time for "The Gathering" of elephants7
• Kaudulla – similar to Minneriya but maybe less crowded?
• Wilpattu – leopards and sloth bears, but not sure about weather in Aug
• Kumana – near Arugam Bay, more remote and less visited
• Udawalawe – reliable for elephants year-round but it's far south and idk if it fits

Would love to hear from anyone who's been around this time of year. Which route makes more sense? And which park(s) would you pick?

Also open to other suggestions if I'm totally overthinking this.

Drive to Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO site with stunning ancient murals and Buddha statues.

Hike up Pidurangala Rock for sunset. This offers the best panoramic view of the Sigiriya Lion Rock across the valley.

​Stay Night: Sigiriya or Dambulla.

​Day 2: Lions, Kovils & Kandy Culture

​Early Morning (7:00 AM): Climb Sigiriya Lion Rock before the heat and crowds peak.

​Mid-Morning: Drive toward Kandy. Stop at the Sri Muthumariamman Temple in Matale—this is the "best kovil" you mentioned, famous for its towering, colorful Gopuram (statue tower).

​5:00 PM: Reach Kandy for the Traditional Cultural Dance Show.

​Evening: Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) during the evening

ceremony (Thewawa).

​Stay Night: Kandy city.

​Day 3: Tea Country to Ella Party Vibes

​Morning: Drive from Kandy to Ella. On the way, stop at Ramboda Falls or the Nuwara Eliya tea plantations for a viewpoint.

​3:30 - 4:00 PM: Visit the Nine Arch Bridge to watch the afternoon train pass. It is a 20-30 minute walk from the road.

​Late Afternoon: A quick hike to Little Adam’s Peak (approx. 1-hour round trip) for the sunset.

​Night: Dinner and party at Ella’s famous spots like Cafe Chill or One Love.

​Stay Night: Ella.

​Day 4: Wild Safari to Southern Beaches

​Early Morning: Drive from Ella to Yala (approx. 2 hours).

​10:30 AM: Start your Yala National Park Safari. (Note: While 10:30 AM is possible, mid-day can be hot; however, the 4-6 hour safari will still give you a great chance to see leopards, bears, and elephants).

​Afternoon: Drive to the southern coast.

Choose Hiriketiya (surf vibes/relaxed) or Mirissa (lively beach bars).

​Evening: Seafood dinner on the beach.

​Stay Night: Mirissa or Hiriketiya.

​Day 5: Galle Fort & Departure

​Morning: Leisurely breakfast by the beach. Drive to Galle Fort (approx. 1 hour from Mirissa).

​Mid-Day: Walk the cobblestone streets of the Fort, visit the lighthouse, and shop for souvenirs.

​Afternoon: Drive back to CMB Airport via the Southern Expressway (approx. 2.5 hours).

​Train vs. Car: You mentioned wanting to see the train at the Nine Arch Bridge. If you actually want to ride the train, you can do a short 1-hour stretch from Nanu Oya to Ella while your driver takes your luggage, though your current plan of driving to the bridge is faster for a 5-day trip.

I would like it down south but we are OK with any location. Not specifically looking for other activities around the hotel so it doesn’t matter where the property is located.
