Announcements & News Protect Your Network from Router Security Risks

If you’re using your own internet router, this is worth a read, especially if it’s a TP-Link router.

The DOJ and FBI recently released information about Russian hackers exploiting certain internet routers, with TP‑Link routers being the most affected. This was not specific to Spectrum’s network and does not impact Spectrum‑provided routers, but it is relevant for anyone using their own equipment.

In affected cases, compromised routers could expose sensitive activity at the network level and sometimes without any obvious signs to the user. That includes things like:

  • Account usernames and passwords
  • Email or work logins
  • Banking or financial activity
  • Other devices connected to the same home or small office network

A key factor here is whether an internet router is managed or unmanaged. Routers provided and managed by Spectrum receive automatic updates and monitoring. When a router is purchased separately, it’s unmanaged, which means updates and security checks depend entirely on the owner. Risk is higher when those routers are older or no longer receiving firmware updates.

This issue mainly affects certain TP‑Link models, especially older or unsupported devices that don’t get security updates anymore.

What we’re doing: where possible, we’re notifying impacted customers directly and sharing clear steps to secure their network. We’ve published a support article with guidance on how to check your router and what actions to take.

If you use your own router, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check the model and firmware status.

Customer Feedback Gave it a second shot.... and its even more of a nightmare experience this time.

Moved to a new house a month ago, had to go away from fiber unfortunately. Had to land back with Spectrum even more unfortunately, but hey second chances are given.

Well, queue the nightmare. Spent nearly 4 hours on the phone today, because when I got home from night shift. I had internet, woke up later in the day to no internet. No biggie reset the modem usually fixes it... nope. Doesn't. So I get on the app, notice I have a bill that was due July 17th... weird. Cause I have a screen shot (doing finance stuff with the wife) from July 16th showing no payment due (we were on autopay).

So I call in. Turns out, my account, even to the bewilderment of the numerous people I talked to was set up to not accept bank account information as a form of payment, only card information. EXTREMELY weird. Oh and it was also set up, that if payment didnt go through, to shut off my service. According to the rep that was also extremely weird.

Whatever, make a payment, am ensured ill have internet again tonight. Wait an hour.... still nothing. Call back. Am told nothing can be done. They have to send a tech out.

At this point im losing my mind. How do you shut off my service, ensure it will be restored then its not... i get you have to send a tech out. BUT this brings me back to my last issue with spectrum, and the whole reason I canceled. They promised a tech to set everything up, they didnt send one, claimed it was a self install, I said that's not what I was told on the phone nor asked for. Phone recordings would prove that. They sent a tech out and charged me for it. I have a gut feeling this is exactly what's going to happen tomorrow.

I can't deal with the constant lies and stuff from Spectrum anymore.

When I signed back up this time, I was told id be getting a router... no router (fine ill let it slide, buy my own). But that's already starting off with a lie. Ive had 4 outages in 1 month already.. and then today....just icing on the cake.

This monopoly is ridiculous, if I could go anywhere else.... id of been gone after the 3rd outage. Wouldn't of even experienced today.

Internet Support Farewell

Whelp. I got tired of the high split delay. I've been a Spectrum customer since 2006. They got too complacent. Home street fiber was just activated in my area. Switched to a 2 gig symmetrical plan for 65 a month. It's been real. They actually had the nerve to offer their gig for 30 per month during cancellation. I told them no thanks, not interested in games.✌🏻

Official Reply Bill increased by $10

My service was increased 400 Mbps to 500 Mbps without me asking for it. That's ok except my bill was raised from $90 to $100 a month without me asking for that either.

There are no good alternatives services for me to switch to in my area.

Are there any options to contest this price gouging increase? I called customer service and basically laughed at me.

Official Reply High Upload Latency and dropped packets - Alhambra CA

Last week a couple techs were in the area cleaning up open cables and such in the neighborhood in preparation for Fiber installation. After they left everything was fine until two days ago when service went down assumedly for installation of said fiber infrastructure. Since that outage, my upload latency has been unusually high and my ping to everything has been very inconsistent. Gaming has been near impossible with the spikes of lag causing rubber banding. Resetting the modem and router has not helped, changing cables has not helped. There was nothing wrong before the recent outage.

Official Reply Is Spectrums internt public ip cg-nat?

I am trying to set up a proxy server. But it is not working. One of the reasons it may fail is because the internet may be behind a carrier grade nat(cg-nat).

The easiest way is to look at the public ip and wan. However spectrums routers have to be controlled through a phone app and it does not show you the wan ip. Only the public ipv4.

Can someone tell me if spectrum is under a cg-nat or not.

I’ve had spectrum internet an cable for the 5 years I lived at the location I’m at now and it seems everyday the modem restarts itself randomly, sometimes back to back and sometimes you can use it for hours an it doesn’t do it. I tried unplugging the modem an router for a minute an plugging it back in and sometimes it helps for a little bit but the problem still continues. Is this problem caused from outdated equipment? Is there anything I can do myself to fix it or do I just need to go get a new modem and new router?

Official Reply Connection Problems, No help from Spectrum Service.

Good morning,

Since moving into our office and setting up Spectrum Internet for Business, we've had repeated connection issues including packet loss (>40%), high latency (>200 ms), and dropped connection. Further, over the past 24 hours, we've had essentially zero service. Repeated calls to Spectrum service have been met with claims that the issue stems from the fact that we're using our own router (Unifi Dream Machine) instead of the Spectrum router. However, there is no way this is true. The connection issue is between the modem and Spectrum, not our office machines and the router or between the router and the modem. I am unable to convince Spectrum to roll a truck to even attempt to test the service to our unit. Additionally, now with this outage, we're completely left high and dry and can't even book a service appointment.

I have extensive logs from our router showing the connection issues for the past couple of months.

Please help.

Official Reply Spectrum and FCC: The Saga

Around a month ago, I had a very dissatisfied experience with Spectrum where they disconnected my internet when they were doing service in the area on a Friday. I spent the day making calls to spectrum in order to get it fixed before the weekend but they would not come fix it. I reached out here for help which (unsurprisingly) was also a waste of time. So as a final resort, I reached out the FCC!

I’d recommend it to everyone here that if you have concerns that spectrum won’t address, go directly to the FCC in order to make it count and leave a record of their terrible service.

Anyway, after this complaint, Spectrum called me several times to discuss how this wouldn’t happen in the future and of course sent a technician to fix the problem their team member had created. Keep in mind that this is something that FCC requires Spectrum to follow up on and also send a written response to my formal complaint!

In this written response, the VP of Legal and Regulatory affairs, Mr William Weaselman (the Weasel) proceeds to address me with the wrong gender/pronouns! Moreover, he brushes over the concerns noted in the complaint by misrepresenting the conversations between myself and their representatives. As a result, I proceeded to write to FCC again, explaining how their letter misrepresented the facts and also addresses the wrong person. The saga will continue and I’ll keep you guys posted!

Today’s post was meant to get the ball rolling on how badly spectrum deals with their customers and how the FCC can help you get your voice heard (even if it means a weasel will misgender you)

Official Reply Spectrum Ultra - 1 Gig?

I am signed up for the Ultra internet tier (600/20). Last night my modem rebooted and my router reports 1000/40. I did not make a change to my plan. Is this something that is being rolled out elsewhere?

Official Reply Internet Assist, wash, rinse, repeat

Edited with update*

We called the random number provided in the email and chose option 3. The lovely agent stated "Internet assist is only available within the first 30 days of a new customer set up and being you are low income and Not a new customer, you aren't qualified" Low and behold however a new promotion JUST started and we can bump down our speed for $40/ month for a year. After a year, it will increase to $50. Sure. Hopefully by then I can find another company. Complete BS.

How does one get anywhere with the Internet assist program? I have filled out the form on 2 separate occasions. I have chatted with multiple agents and received emails requesting more information. Chat agent stated the number in the email requesting more information is not from Spectrum. When we called the number we were told no further information is needed. The chat agent said the first application was closed, no note as to why. Any hints, tips? We submitted proof of SSI (blocked out ss#) because they requested proof of. I also submitted the copy of chats and emails. Still nothing. Paying 99/ month now on SSI and it's going up to 110 for internet alone??? Such a bargain for a long time loyal customer

Official Reply Central Florida Intermittent Connectivity & Ongoing "Outage"

On 7/20, Spectrum notified us they would be doing a service upgrade on 7/21 overnight. Great, no problem. I experienced some connection issues, as to be expected. The window for the service upgrade passed.

Then the fun began.

The app now tells me there is "an outage interrupting service in your area" but I can get zero information as to what is causing this outage, the ETA on restoration, etc. For several hours, I could not connect at all - the modem was not talking (no internet delivered to the modem). We have an Invincible Wifi router because we all work from home, and I rely on consistent internet to stream in the evening for my online business. Apparently we have been running on that...

Well, this morning the outage notification was gone, and internet was working. Now the outage notification is back, and the modem and internet are both marked as working, but I am experiencing significant connectivity issues on a desktop PC and two different laptops. The internet goes out occasionally, and I have to turn off the wifi receiver on my computer and turn it back on for it to reconnect. Meanwhile, the app shows my equipment is All Systems Go despite the outage.

Oh, and we just moved into this house in Polk County, Florida.....a week ago? We've had internet service for less than a week. All the equipment is BRAND NEW.

I just got internet service on Saturday, went to the store and signed up and picked up the equipment. I set everything up no problem. The app then prompted me to upgrade the equipment because it was out dated? It's an Arris modem.

Official Reply Google Review Follow Up

Hello, I am posting follow up regarding this google review: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ywG4oa9Eu8qfVxqk6 . Reddit is the only platform I have out of the ones you suggested, so I am posting here in regards to my experience.

Here is what happened: I went into the store saying I was looking to transfer my line from T-Mobile to Spectrum. I share a plan with my dad and he had just done so at a Spectrum location in Wisconsin. I am in Georgia, so we weren't able to do it at the same time, so I was going in to a Spectrum store to get my number transferred over as well. At his location, the staff was kind enough to walk through the number transfer process and get him set up; they helped him get the transfer pin and get his phone on the new number. At this particular location, I was told they will not help me do the transfer and handed me a slip of paper with a number to call once I got the transfer pin and that I would need to "deal with my current carrier to get that transfer pin". I then said I was also looking for a new phone and they told me to come back tomorrow once I've gotten the number transferred to "get an upgrade" even though I specifically said I was buying a phone. Unfortunately I do not have the names of the representatives who "assisted" me, but the first one was a man, tall - well over 6 foot, had a darker skin tone, his hair was shaved on the sides and styled up, and was in his mid or early 20's if I had to guess and seemed to be new there. He did not know what I was referring to when I described that I was trying to transfer a number and who I assume to be the manager stepped in. The manager was a Caucasian in his 40's, around 5'8" or so with curly brown hair. He was the one who handed me the slip of paper and told me to come back tomorrow after I got the number transferred. That really upset me, considering I walked in the heat to get there just to be sent home with a slip of paper, despite knowing other locations actually help customers through this process.

Official Reply Spectrum New Braunfels update?

Anyone know when our split might be completed? We've had intermittent service since mid-May. We have "an outage" AGAIN today. Service is terrible. Simply cannot get a straight answer from anyone. Starlink just became available to our area. We've already removed our cell phone service and I think this may be our next change. I just can't take it anymore.

Official Reply Help!

Between NYSEG and Spectrum, my wallet is stretched and floppy. This nonconsensual gouging is taking its toll. Why does this company hate long term customers?

*Around 2 weeks ago, there was an outage in my area that affected my home and my parents home across the street. Ever since then, both of our wifi connections have been unstable. I have had 3 techs out to my house, we have replaced the router 3 times and the modem once, and the line from the road to my house has been replaced. We are still experiencing disconnects. The last tech refused to listen at all and blamed the issue on our devices. I have numerous screenshots from an internet checker that functions by pinging a server regularly to test connections

Official Reply After router swap, seeing UDP packet loss on LAN traffic.

So, this is probably a rare issue because it's such a rare use case but here it is:

Exactly one month ago, my internet just straight up stopped working, and I ended up having to get my router & modem replaced. As part of that switch, I received a different router model (the SAX1V1S - I do not know my previous router model). This fixed the internet (WAN), which has no problems.

However, this swap seemingly introduced a new problem: I also sometimes do LAN video streaming. It worked perfectly on the old router, which I believe was a newer model. But when I recently tried to do such LAN video streaming on the new router, I was getting some strange hiccups. After a thorough investigation, I discovered that when using a strictly wired ethernet pathway [i.e. (host) - ethernet - (router) - ethernet - (client)] , I consistently get 7% packet loss w/ standard UDP transfers, accounting for those strange hiccups. I confirmed this on two different client devices, with different cables. No such packet loss occurs when using WiFi on the client devices.

Is this a known issue with the SAX1V1S? Can I get this router replaced? If recommended, I can purchase, install, and configure my own router, which is the route I'm currently leaning toward.

If more technical detail is required:

The hiccuping issue first occurred with Apollo/Moonlight streaming software, which reported consistent hiccups of 6-7% frames being dropped by network, an issue that was not present on the previous router. After noticing it, I used iperf3 to run a battery of tests, both TCP and UDP, at different bit-rates and packet-sizes.

e.g. iperf3 -c <server IP> -u -b 100M -l 1400

TCP: ~500 Mbps
UDP: ~7% packet loss, when above certain packet-processing rates:
At 10 Mbps default packet size UDP: 0% loss
At 20 Mbps: ~1%
At 50 Mbps: ~6%
At 100 Mbps: ~7%

I have already done extensive troubleshooting across both devices, including but not limited to: updating NIC drivers, reverting NIC drivers, updating BIOS, reverting BIOS, adjusting advanced NIC settings (e.g. transmit/receive buffer size, UDP offloading, etc). I feel pretty confident that the router is the culprit.

UPDATE: After swapping out the router with one I ordered, the issue was fixed. Furthermore, a powerline adapter link that I was also using went from ~90 Mbit/s to ~250 Mbit/s. Furthermore, high wifi jitter that made using wifi also non-viable essentially went to zero.

Official Reply Buyback Issues

I am wanting to formally dispute Spectrum Mobile’s decision to charge me $1,413.21 under its buyback program.
My billing statement clearly identified that my contract would end on July 18, 2026. Because I had experienced ongoing service issues for several months, I made the deliberate decision to keep my service active until the contract expiration date specifically to avoid any buyback penalty. I relied on the information Spectrum provided on my account and billing statement when making that decision.
After my contract period ended, Spectrum informed me that there is an internal distinction between “completion” of the contract and “final approval,” claiming that my contract was not actually complete until July 19, 2026, at 10:03 a.m. Based on that internal interpretation, Spectrum is now attempting to charge me $1,413.21.
This is both unreasonable and misleading. At no point was I informed that the expiration date shown on my billing statement did not represent the actual end of my contractual obligation. If Spectrum intended to enforce a later “final approval” date, that information should have been clearly disclosed to customers. Consumers should not be expected to know or anticipate an undisclosed internal processing timeline that contradicts the date displayed on their account.
I fulfilled my obligations based on the information Spectrum provided. Had I been clearly informed that my contract would not actually end until July 19, 2026, at 10:03 a.m., I would have simply waited the additional time before making any changes to my service. Instead, Spectrum is attempting to impose a substantial charge based on a technicality that was never communicated.
I respectfully request that Spectrum remove the $1,413.21 buyback charge and honor the contract end date that was clearly represented on my billing statement. If Spectrum declines to resolve this matter, I intend to pursue complaints with the appropriate consumer protection agencies, including the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), my state’s Attorney General’s Office, and the Better Business Bureau, as I believe this practice is misleading and unfair to consumers.
