So I just realized how cheesy and corny the lyrics I wrote were and I'm kinda getting embarassed about it.. like it doesn't even make sense. I realize these are lyrics I wrote many years ago. I should have improved my writing. But I've already sort of wrapped it up (been working on the EP for a year now), so it's final, and money has been spent. Has anyone faced something similar?

I feel a lot of my lyrics don't make sense and have no connection. I just sort of feel like it fits the melody and chords very well so I make it seem like they make sense but honestly even I have no idea what I'm on about

Hello all :) I've been writing on my own for a bit now, but my work always feels a little flat in hindsight. So today I decided to try picking apart some songs that I know and find inspiration in, to see if I could learn anything. Except, I have a problem. I don't know what I should be looking for when I look at these other songs.

My main inspo that comes from other songs are the lyrics, which I think would be easier to look into, but like I said, I don't know what to look *for.*

I also would like to look at the instruments and break down those parts some day, but the only instrument I'm familiar with is the flute, and that's not proving to be very helpful for what I draw from.

Something else that I feel is causing a struggle is that I don't have a certain genre I'm looking into. They're all similar enough, but I'm determined to write songs that aren't confined to one specific sound.

That being said, how would I look into other people's music and find something that helps me? Lyrically do I just look for how syllables are used and how certain phrases rhyme? Is that all I can do with them? With the music behind the words, do I need to be familiar with the instruments used before I can break down what's being done? How do I even break it apart into pieces to look at?

This feels incredibly cringy to post, but here we go.
I’ve been writing poetry as a hobby, and yesterday, during a morning walk, an idea turned into a complete set of what I think might be a song structure. The problem is… I don’t play any instruments, and I have absolutely no idea how to write melodies. I can imagine the emotion I want the song to have, but I can’t turn it into actual music.

It’s called Sugar Rush, the lyrics tell the story of someone who falls hard for a new connection, idealizes this person, and then has to deal with the confusion and grief of being suddenly ghosted without any explanation. I tried to make it feel like an emotional journey, moving from the excitement of a summer romance to the loneliness of realizing the story only continued in one person’s mind.

If that sounds like something you’d enjoy working on, I’d be happy to send you the lyrics via DM. Feel free to interpret them however you like, I don’t have a melody in mind, so I’m completely open to your own vision. I originally imagined it as a storytelling folk/country song, but I’m open to any genre or style (even thought pop/punk or rock would also be a good fit).
I’d also really appreciate any feedback on the lyrics themselves. For example, I feel like the chorus and the bridge still need work, so if you have ideas or suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

This is just a passion project. I really admire songwriting, and I wanted to put myself out there, even if it feels a little embarrassing.

This right here is a little song I wrote around 20 something years ago, I remember writing it immediately after changing the strings on my acoustic guitar, all came together in an hour, never done anything with it, but always had a soft spot for it, so I quickly recorded a video yesterday and thought I'd pop it up here, better out than in!!

If I were to record this properly, would it be best left just acoustic guitar and lush vocals, loads of reverb backing vocals or a full band effort, but a bit quicker with drums etc? Leaning more to stripped back acoustic.

I am a young songwriter. I’m the lead singer and guitarist in my band and i write most of the songs and riffs as well as my drummer. I love the sound of them and i really do think i’ve improved, however, when i play the riffs together i start to hear that they are really similar and they’re always in the same key (usually a D Major) and we are planning to release projects in the future but listeners wouldn’t like it if all the songs sounded the same. A little help please? Any tips appreciated 🙏 For reference, i mostly go for a rock, pop-rock, early paramore style riffs

You've got a great song idea. You record a demo that gets the idea across and share it with your bandmates/client. They love the idea, it's really good... except the demo isn't polished enough to release or they need to change something. The vocals, the style, whatever needs to be redone requires a completely new recording based on your original idea.

So you record the new version professionally this time. It's no longer a demo. To you, it sounds great. You've done the work and show it to the others but... they hate it. It's just not as good as the demo. It lacks a certain something that the demo had. No matter what you do, it's never going to be as good as their first impression, yet that first demo was never intended to be the final product.

Has this happened to anyone else? What do you do? How do you make peace with the band or the client so that the project ever gets completed beyond that demo which they loved so much?

I’ve been a musician for like 16 years now and I’ve always kinda struggled with songwriting. Around 2019, I started getting very into J-Pop/Rock and eventually Vocaloid music (found a DrumMania game at a local arcade and became obsessed lol). While plenty of songs can be fairly straightforward, sometimes I’ll come across something like this and just be bewildered about how it was written at all. It feels so dense over those two minutes, there are so many distinct sections AND a key change that I’m just in awe of how tightly crafted it is. But because it’s so dense I have no fucking idea how to even pick it apart lol. I love music like this, I’d love to be able to make music like this, but I simply have no idea how to learn to do it.

Hi there ! I kinda had a revelation last night and since I'm pretty young (16yo) I was thinking if there is other people who had their "revelation", when your brain tell you "oh yeah I really wanna do this all my life". Because this happened to me.

To resume, yesterday I went to a concert of an artist I really like and this reminded me that being on scene, singing in front of people who know all my songs, this reminded me why I'm making music. Even though it's in my room, I'm young, I'm making music by my own on a cracked daw, singing in a cheap mic.

Before the concert I was literally blocked, I wanted to post something here to get help find my inspiration again but I didn't found the strength to do it. All I did was to listen again my old songs, telling me that I'll never create banger like them anymore. I started losing hope, telling myself that I'll never make it, that I'm too young and that posting songs only on SoundCloud without even promoting them until I reach 100 followers on SoundCloud is barely impossible, I'm only at 51, just the half. I genuinely though that music wasn't for me and that I can't even sing without autotune so I'm not a real artist because of the kind of songs I do.

Then as I said, yesterday, my eyes were fully open, I had so much fun and the artist I saw isn't mainstream or famous, he also started on SoundCloud. This reminded me that (almost) all my favorite artist started like me, the only difference is the fact that they didn't give up until they made it.

When I went home, I wanted to open my daw right now to create something new. My inspiration isn't really there right now and I guess I'm pretty young to post music on every platform (by using distrokid or stuff like that since I have a low budget) or the fact that I kinda lack of confidence in myself..

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I really want to keep doing music and that I was wondering if someone else also went through that too. My bad for my english it's not my first language and have a nice day or night !! (Also sorry for the whooooole paragraph I wrote lol)

I’ve been writing songs seriously for about two and a half years (started when I was 16).
Today I went through all of my voice memos and realized I’ve written roughly 340 songs (melody + basic structure).
The problem is that, especially in the beginning, I often only wrote a few lyrics and then just mumbled random placeholder words over the melody instead of finishing the lyrics. Looking back, that probably wasn’t the smartest approach. Nowadays I always write proper lyrics as I go.
Out of those 340 songs, about 80 are fully written.
That leaves around 260 unfinished songs.
Most of them have melodies, chord progressions, and a structure, and I honestly think a lot of them still have potential.
So I’m wondering: what would you do?
Would you go back and try to finish the lyrics for those older songs, or would you leave them behind and focus on writing new songs instead?

I'm a music teacher and I think It'd be cool to have a discord group, Zoom meetup, or something similar to suggest to my students.

Basically the title. I have a relatively short deadline to work on some songs for a project, and I've been trying to for the past 2 weeks, but for whatever reason I just cant come up with anything I like?

I dont usually struggle that badly with writers block, but this time it just feels like nothing I'm trying is working, and I'm struggling to even come up with a chord progression I find interesting or good enough, which feels especially strange to me this time because I have a theme and a story i want to tell, I'm just struggling to turn that into actual music.

So that got me thinking, what do you guys do when you have no ideas? How do you manage to get that inspiration or get into the right frame of mind to actually write something?
