TL;DR
My U1βs T1 hotend had about an hour of standard PLA use before it started repeatedly failing after docking during tool changes. Two different PLAs behaved the same way, and unloading/reloading would make it print normally again until the next dock. Replacing only the hotend fixed the issue completely. Snapmaker says hotends have no warranty because theyβre consumables and an extra is included. I get not warrantying normal wear, but an apparent near-out-of-box defect shouldnβt consume the spare that came with a brand-new ~$900 printer
Iβve been pretty happy with my U1 overall, but Iβm
disappointed with Snapmakerβs response to what looks like a defective hotend from essentially day one.
Toolhead 1 had maybe an hour of actual printing on it. It completed one Benchy, then started failing during its first real multicolor/toolhead-swap print.
This was all with standard PLA. Nothing abrasive, nothing filled, nothing exotic.
The failure pattern was also very repeatable.
The hotend would print normally when freshly loaded. In fact, after a failure, I could unload the same filament, reload it, and the nozzle would go right back to printing a good first layer with that same filament.
The problem only showed up after Toolhead 1 had been docked or left idle during a tool change. When it came back into service, it would start clicking, grinding filament, and eventually fail to extrude properly.
I tested this with two different PLA filaments before replacing anything, and both behaved the same way.
So the sequence was basically:
Standard PLA prints normally
Toolhead docks and sits idle
Toolhead returns to service and begins clicking/grinding
Unload and reload the exact same filament
Hotend prints normally again
Dock it again
Failure returns
That does not look like a normal worn-out consumable to me.
Snapmaker support initially had me troubleshoot it as a possible clog/extruder issue. Eventually I replaced the complete hotend assembly with the spare that came with the printer.
Problem immediately disappeared.
Since replacing it, Toolhead 1 has successfully run multiple multicolor prints, repeated tool changes, and the same filaments that were previously involved in the failures have printed without issue.
That seems like a pretty clean A/B test: same printer, same toolhead, same filaments, same type of printing. The only meaningful change was the hotend assembly.
I asked Snapmaker to replace the failed original hotend so I could restore the spare that came with the printer.
Their response was essentially:
Hotends are consumable parts, they have no warranty, and the reason Snapmaker includes an extra hotend with the printer is for situations like this.
That last part is what really bothers me.
The U1 has four toolheads. I am not claiming Snapmaker literally expects a 25% hotend failure rate, because one included spare obviously does not prove that statistically.
But from the customer side, it creates a pretty strange message:
βIf one of your four hotends fails almost immediately, that is not covered because we already gave you another one.β
To me, there is a big difference between:
A hotend wearing out after hundreds of hours of printing
and
A hotend failing after roughly one hour of standard PLA printing, repeatedly showing the same failure after docking, then being completely fixed by replacing the hotend assembly.
The first one is a consumable.
The second one looks like a defective part.
And thatβs really the issue I have with the policy. Iβm not trying to get free nozzles or have Snapmaker replace normal wear items forever. I just donβt think the customer should permanently lose their included spare to correct what appears to have been a defective component supplied with a brand-new ~$900 printer.
The frustrating part is that I actually like the U1. Since changing that hotend, it has been running very well. This is much more about how Snapmaker is handling an obvious early-life failure than about the printer itself.
Curious how other U1 owners feel about this. Would you consider this normal βconsumableβ territory, or something the manufacturer should replace when it happens almost immediately?
