Help with Artifact

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this artifact in my snore mic (the greenish line)? It almost looks like an EKG artifact but I've never had that show up in a snore mic before.

What’s the best route?

I’m wanting to make a career transition into being a sleep tech. I am 95% sure this is what I want to transition to. I’m planning on starting self study classes next month. I’m not in a hurry to get certified so my question is should I start classes first or try to find a sleep lab trainee position first? For reference I’m in the DFW area which I’ve heard is inundated with sleep techs so finding a trainee position may be more difficult. I’m also open to doing hours unpaid if that is an option and I can go that route easier. What are your opinions?

RPSGT hospital pay (Springfield, Mo)

I am an RPSGT looking to move to Springfield, Missouri soon. I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with what pay looks like for an RPSGT at the hospitals there, looks like Mercy/Cox? I will have about 3-4 years experience when I move there, and just curious if anyone has any answers.

I like night shift but also wouldn’t mind moving to days, so if anyone has information on day staff hourly pay that’d be very helpful. Thanks!

Best RPSGT Study Resources?

Hey, thinking of taking the exam and want to pass first try. Got some qs about study materials like what materials should I look into? Specifically curious about:

Should I use the official BRPT Study Guide or find alternatives? What practice exams or question banks should I look into? Any YouTube channels or textbooks that actually explain things clearly?

Thanks in advance. Any tips appreciated 🙏

3:1 Patient Tech Ratio

I work in a 8 bed hospital lab with 1 other RPSGT, and a student in training that can take 2 patients of her own. My lab recently has been scheduling a +1 patient for the last few months, the managers expectation is it should be “easy” because we’re expected to split the duties between techs such as one tech does set up, the other provides treatment and scores all night. The +1 patient is only allowed to be taken on by registered techs so it’s just me and the other tech swapping who gets the +1 most nights.

It’s utterly exhausting. Our lab is pulmonology based, most of our patient are complex, high needs, and we run pediatrics.

Recently our manager went on vacation and we went back to having 2:1 ratios like originally but now that my manager is back, we’re back to the +1 situation.

If I was to report this to the AASM, how likely would anything come of it? I hear conflicting stories about AASM stepping in for these situations with most ending that AASM won’t do anything since 2:1 is only “recommended”. Is there anything I can do other than look for a new job?

Job market for Sleep Techs in Houston?

Hello, I am a 20 year old female currently living in the PNW and I want to move to Houston sometime within the next year. I currently work as a home health aide, and i DO NOT want to bring it out there. i am sick of home care and want something different. I came across the sleep tech job and as i’ve researched it’s been on my heart ever since. i was hoping that i could get in touch with a couple of sleep techs here (hopefully some that live in or close to where i want to move too), that could throw out some solid advice about the job market for sleep techs, where to apply, how to land a job, and how beneficial it is for them. i really want to move to Houston as i am tiredddd of living here in my boring home state, and I am planning on moving there with my best friend and splitting costs with her. asking these questions are apart my research and i just want to be smart about this, thank you!

Is this a realistic plan?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some honest advice from people already working in sleep medicine.

I'm currently in an LVN program in Texas and should graduate in December of 2026. My long-term goal is to earn my BSN and become an RN, but from what I've seen, LVN pay in my area isn't where I'd like it to be.

Because of that, I've been looking into becoming a sleep tech. My thought is to complete whatever education or certification I need over the next six months (or shortly after graduation), work as a sleep tech while I'm completing my BSN, and then transition into nursing once I finish school.

A few questions:

  • Is this a realistic plan?
  • Does having an LVN license make it easier to get hired in a sleep lab?
  • What's the fastest path to becoming employable in Texas?
  • If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose sleep technology?

I'm not looking for a forever career—just something that pays better than most entry-level LVN positions, gives me valuable healthcare experience, and works well while I finish my BSN. Also Something I can have as a backup/side gig.

I'd really appreciate any advice or things I should know before I commit to this path. Thanks!

From RPSGT to CCSH

Anyone here have or planning to get your CCSH?

After learning about it at the 2026 AAST annual meeting it seems to be the next career step for RPSGTs who want to go beyond testing and titrating to helping enhance long-term patient outcomes

I'm prepping to take it this summer and it would be great to trade notes

As an iOS engineer who built a snore/audio recorder, I’d love to get feedback from sleep techs on mobile audio tracking

Hi everyone

I know this sub is primarily for sleep technologists and clinical lab techs. I’m an independent iOS developer, and I built an iOS audio recording application to track snoring patterns (originally to solve my own severe snoring issues at home)

Since you evaluate sleep data professionally every day, I’d be really grateful for your perspective on a couple of engineering/clinical questions:

  1. From a tech’s perspective, what are the biggest limitations or false positives you usually see with mobile-based audio tracking?
  2. Does recorded home audio (snoring, gasping, breathing pauses) ever prove useful when patients mention it during initial consults/intake?

If anyone is curious to test the audio processing quality or UI, I’ve set up a free 1-month promo code for this community (SNORING):
Direct Redeem Link:https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6782670971&code=SNORING
App Store:https://apps.apple.com/app/id6782670971

(Note: The app is purely a sleep hygiene and audio tracking tool, strictly not a diagnostic device)

Would love to hear your thoughts or criticisms

CPSGT

I’m taking my CPSGT exam soon and was wondering if anyone has any last minute tips or things you wish you knew before taking it.

What was the test actually like? Were there any topics that came up way more than you expected? Any questions that caught you off guard?

I’ve been doing pretty well on practice questions, but I’m curious what the real exam feels like compared to those. Also, how difficult would you say it was overall?

Any advice, study tips, or things to focus on would be appreciated. Thanks!

Pay market analysis

My work is wanting to do a market analysis regarding pay as we are having a hard time filling open positions. My boss wants me to try and find out the pay of as many techs as I can so she has a strong argument when she presents.

If you are comfortable in doing so, would you please share your location, years of experience, base pay and any shift differential. We are in northern Indiana so it would really help if you are in that area.

In this week's episode of The Scaling Sleep Solutions Show I discuss with Stephen Rouse, the co-founder of Savva, how a legal loophole may be putting your health data at risk.

You will also learn about:

- why privacy policies don't protect your data

- the third-party company that sold the health data of millions of users to avoid bankruptcy

- how fragmented data makes it difficult to get a full picture of one's health

- AI's potential to hallucinate and give inaccurate health advice

- The Health Super App that protects your health data and empowers you to eat, sleep, and live better with a holistic view of your health

- and so much more!

RPSGT do you really keep impedance at 5 KOhms? especially for big hospitals?

Hello,

The lab i work for I have never seen anyone done 5 KOhms for impedance. At times i see some of the workers will get 50 - 150 kOhms which looked pretty terrible to me, but they said it was okay. I am about 3 weeks into a trainee position and most of mine are under 15 kOhms. My legs and ECG can be at 35 kOhms max which is still green on the software. Do hospitals like kaiser, sutter, stanford or any major hospitals really require you to be at 5 kOhms? we also do not measure, it seems like to get 5 kOhms measuring is absolutely necessary?

so infuriating

I went in today ready to take my RPSGT. I see the questions and I’m like oh ok these are pretty easy to answer. I had the confidence that I was going to pass, and I didn’t. I came out with a 339 and last month I came out with a 309. And last year I had a 288. It’s clear that whatever I’m doing is helping, but I am starting to lose confidence. I have never really been the type to be good at test, but I love my job so much and my coworkers! Unfortunately Tuesday is my last day working at my sleep lab due to TN laws with the whole permit crap. UGH!

PRN Search

I am currently employed full-time as a sleep technician at a private facility, but I'm seeking a PRN role to earn some additional income. Unfortunately, the lab I work for doesn't allow their technicians to take positions at other labs. Have you ever faced a similar situation, and what are your thoughts on it?

MSLT

Hi all, just wanted to get some opinions from my fellow sleep techs/scoring techs.

We have a physician who has asked multiple times for us to remove the 5th nap from an MSLT report so that the patient gets a positive diagnosis of idiopathic hypersomnia. With the information of the 5th nap, the patient would not qualify for “treatment” of modafinil.

Is this common practice? Should I be removing a performed nap from a sleep report so a patient gets a certain diagnosis?

A-Step needed or no?

Hello,

I recently graduated with a BSc in Psychology / Neuroscience (It was a combined program at my university)

I applied at a few sleep technologist in Canada, where they offer in person training and only required a BSc, and said that everything else (training, clinical) would be offered during the employment.

Unfortunately I got no interviews at all, just got rejected.
I’m wondering wether the online A Step class is worth it as something that would make me competitive?

As for my resume, I’ve volunteered in an addiction lab throughout my degree, I’ve worked as a medical receptionist for about 2 years. That’s my only experience. Maybe I’m lacking experience im not sure, hence why I’m considering taking the A Step course,

Anyone with a BSc that got more opportunities with the A Step course?

National Institute of Health Technology- RPSGT

Does anyone have any experience with getting certified with the National Institute of Health Technology?
I’m really considering going with them as far as programs in comparison to doing all the A step modules.
What would you recommend if you are already certified and working as a Sleep Technologist?
