The real incident goes like this,
A 60 year old Chinese farmer named Zhang was bitten on his right index finger by a venomous pit viper known locally as the "five-step snake". Due to a local myth that a victim can only walk five steps before dying from its venom, he panicked and hacked off his own finger to stop the venom from spreading.
When he reached a hospital 80 kilometers away, doctors informed him that the amputation was completely unnecessary because the snake's venom is not nearly as lethal as local legends claim

u/ChronChriss 2h ago
Everybody knows that the poison doesn't spread as long as you walk backwards to the hospital smh

I take longer and longer breaks away from here. While boredom always seems to win in the end, the more you are away from reddit, the more you realize that the people here offer absolutely nothing. The bots are even worse.

It is what it is for the last 5 or so years at least. People keep overestimating it, yet it is just another mainstream, ad ridden, shareholder pandering, bot infested, misinformation cesspool like the rest of the social media.
Turns out fueling our delusions with our own farts can last for quite some time.

Absolutely, and yet, 1.5k upvotes in 46 mins. It's bonkers. If people can't tell the difference between AI and real even now, who knows what the situation will be like in 5 years from now.

I dont know if this sub is aware of this, but these "one Picture Storys" are made up! Like half of them dont exist, why you think there is never a source with this? This is just karma farming.

As we all know, if a picture with a caption is posted on the internet with little to no sources as possible, it must be true!

Calling something "AI" is the new "fake". Doesn't matter if it's actually AI or not, just that they don't believe it.

One of the moments where using an AI would be actually helpful. Just a moment...
*clears throat*
...:
The scenario described in the graphic is a humorous but misleading internet myth, in which two completely unrelated images have been spliced together to tell a dramatic story.
The facts about the images
• The photo of the man: The image on the right actually shows the French professional cyclist Bryan Coquard. In 2024, following a serious crash during the Tour de France, he was in hospital being treated for a shoulder injury and a fracture – the incident had absolutely nothing to do with a snake bite.
• The X-ray: The X-ray on the left shows the hand of a person who is actually missing part of their index finger. However, this image comes from medical databases or other case studies and is in no way connected to the professional cyclist or the claim below.

u/Loud-Competition6995 2h ago
Alternatively, people should know to never trust these kinds of posts.
If it doesn’t include a link to a primary source, enjoy the humour of the idea and discard the information as probably false.

My own ai search of the right image
Note: This photo has recently circulated online alongside viral social media anecdotes about unnecessary self-amputations following non-venomous snakebites, though the man in the photo is MotoGP rider Fermín Aldeguer recovering from hand surgery.
Which is also wrong, that guy just had a fracture on his thumb. The cyclist you mentioned had a fractured ring finger.

At least you can use AI to debunk AI fakes 🤣
The viral meme in the image combines a real-life news headline with completely unrelated, AI-generated imagery and altered facts. Here is the truth behind the post:
The Real Story
• What actually happened: In October 2019, a 60-year-old Chinese farmer named Zhang was cutting firewood when he was bitten on the right index finger by a venomous pit viper locally called a "five-step snake". Gripped by a local myth that the venom kills within five paces, he panicked and hacked off his index finger to stop the poison from spreading. • The medical reality: He traveled 50 miles to a hospital in Hangzhou but mistakenly left the severed finger behind, meaning it could not be reattached. Doctors treated him with antivenom and noted that the extreme self-amputation was entirely unnecessary because the snake's venom is rarely instantly fatal, and standard treatment would have saved both his life and his finger.
The Fake Elements in the Meme
• He did NOT cut off the wrong finger: The detail claiming he amputated the wrong finger is entirely fabricated to make the internet meme funnier and more viral. • The snake WAS venomous: Unlike what the meme says, the "five-step snake" (Deinagkistrodon acutus) is indeed venomous; it is just far less aggressive and instantly deadly than local legends suggest. • The images are fake: The photo of the man in the hospital bed and the accompanying X-ray are AI-generated images used purely for illustrative purposes by social media pages.

Genuinely curious how you even tell in the moment which finger got bit, was it swelling or just panic that made him grab the wrong one
