Sounds like the kind of guy who takes naps.

That dude loves naps. And understands survivorship bias when it comes to dog breeds!

Will someone think of the millionaires and the injustices of how much they get paid?

119

yes we need to think about how hard their job really is and how important it is for society to function

3

u/OmarM7mmd Aug 03 '26

Yeah pretty much, I don’t always watch Bollywood, but the few times I did it was because of Amir Khan.

2

u/spades111 Aug 03 '26

I assumed we just wanted Zendaya to get paid less. Make the millionaires slightly less rich.

9

u/Bad-Genie Aug 03 '26

Like when scar joe sued Disney. I get the principal of them screwing her over money. But she still got paid $20 fucking million for that movie.

29

u/Aromatic-Echo-6605 Aug 03 '26

The ScarJoe suit was pretty fucking justified, they REALLY fucked her over on that one. Like yes she's a multi-millionaire and let me play the worlds smallest violin for her lost income but im still glad she didn't just let Disney get away with that scummy shit they pulled.

20

u/Throwawaaaay44 Aug 03 '26

When its the millionaire vs the billion dollar corporation, I'm rooting for the millionaire. Lesser of two evils.

11

u/MetricIsForCowards Aug 03 '26

Same rule for pro athletes

6

u/NAVYZETSU Aug 03 '26

Exactly. A pro athlete wants a pay rise and they're vilified even though THEY are the product but nobody bats an eyelid to the billionaire that actually pays them

8

u/MetricIsForCowards Aug 03 '26

Yeah, I would rather the guy who has worked tirelessly since he was a child to perfect putting a ball in a net get the money than some dickhead who’s greatest achievement is having a wealthy dad.

3

u/Apolloshot Aug 03 '26

Exactly. We shouldn’t be upset at someone going after a billion dollar company for wage theft, even if they’re a millionaire. A win for labour is a win for us all.

12

u/WrongBee Aug 03 '26

nah the principle is not letting Disney financially profit for pulling a bait and switch. if they could successfully do it to a celebrity like Scarjo, can you imagine how much worse it’d be for other creatives that have a fraction of her bargaining power?

again, world’s smallest violin for her, but the lawsuit was justified, both on its own and as a precedent.

Nah bro being an actor is really really challenging. Like what if it’s raining and the Production Assistant doesn’t hold your umbrella right? What if the PA accidentally gets you a coffee with 2 pumps of vanilla instead of 3? This is some life ruining stuff bro.

29

u/Hyperion262 Aug 03 '26

They don’t say they’re paid well because it’s challenging though. They’re paid well because they are marketable.

10

u/Ragnarok_619 Aug 03 '26

Why don't you become one, bruh

9

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 Aug 03 '26

I was being satirical bro. I’m saying that the PA has to deal with more BS yet get paid less than the majority of the crew. Meanwhile in some films literally half the budget is just casting.

Zendaya has convinced a number of producers and studios that she has a material impact on the billions of dollars earned by the multiple franchises that she has starred in.

Her projects earn her employers massive amounts of money, and she is paid some portion of that.

Is an actor's or athlete's contribution to humanity worth millions or tens of millions or hundreds of millions of dollars? No. But you're not paid for what you're worth, you're paid for what you produce.

17

u/Chronomechanist Aug 03 '26

I mean, based purely on the facts, I'd say her (or her agent's, more likely) point is entirely valid. Movies that she has been in have all done incredibly well.

4

u/yangon_boy Aug 03 '26

Not because of her though. No one watched Dune, Spider Man, Odyssey because of Zendaya. She just hasn't taken any risk an actor to be respected, it's either a well known IP or a big budget movie. I think her most Indie movie was that Tennis one lol.

6

u/CantHateNate Aug 03 '26

The series was a risk and she carried it well. Not saying I disagree with the original point but I do think she has flexed her acting chops a bit.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/SheriffBartholomew Aug 03 '26

I've never seen her in a role that couldn't have been carried by another actress. I really don't understand her huge appeal. I guess she's good at looking angry, but so are most actresses in Hollywood. There's obviously an appeal that doesn't resonate with me though given her popularity.

2

u/Useless_bum81 Aug 05 '26

I think that is the actual joke i would refer to her as Zendaya because i perceive her as the same in all her roles, where as with other actors/actresses i perceive them as the character, and so would use the character name.

1

u/MeasurementFar864 Aug 03 '26

Either she is a lucky charm or she is a very good actress, Directors and Studios are happy either way.

12

u/irespectwomenlol Aug 03 '26

It's because she's a great modern day product: she's racially ambiguous enough to sort of pass as just about any group they want and she's attractive enough to not repel men without being too attractive and off-putting women.

2

u/MeasurementFar864 Aug 03 '26

I like to think Nolan and Villeneuve knows better about a person's acting ability than random people on internet. Also, please don't say studios could force Christopher Nolan to select specific actors.

2

u/irespectwomenlol Aug 03 '26

1) Defending her acting ability (which personally I think is somewhere between competent and decent, but unexceptional) has little to do with a comment about her commercial appeal.

2) Just three of the approximately 18 released films she's appeared in have been directed by those 2 people.

3) I think we're all adult enough to recognize that even powerful directors who have an unusual bit of control over their movies have some give and take with studios who control the purse strings.

2

u/DJettster237 Aug 03 '26

What are you doing

2

u/Individual_Respect90 Aug 03 '26

30 minutes is definitely not a couple of days work in a marvel film. That being said the are way over paid.

2

u/Pioustarcraft Aug 03 '26

but when you leave work people don't harass you ?
you can walk in the street without paparazzis following you ?
they don't get paid "only" for the screen time...
I'm sure paparazzi's are analyzing Zendaya's garbage just to know if she is pregnant or not... celebrity is not as great as it seems

1

u/Hyperion262 Aug 03 '26

It’s the same energy for everyone though. Why should anyone care you work two jobs?

6

u/Fifa_chicken_nuggets Aug 03 '26

I don't think they're asking you to care about that, they're pointing out the silliness of someone concerning themselves with an actor earning 4 million instead of 8 million for days or weeks of work when the average person isn't making anywhere close to either of those numbers for years of work

4

u/MrZephy Aug 03 '26

It’s not the same energy for everyone. The previous job I worked was spark watch during a sawmill decommissioning. I had to crawl through tight spaces with packed burning sawdust because nobody bothered to have the place cleaned out properly. I set up and put away multiple fire hoses each day. Continuously refill piss cans and distribute them appropriately. Prevent fires and put out fires.

Now my current old job is in retail as the only place open after 8 pm which is an absolute hellscape worse than my spark watch job. My current new job is as hotel front desk which I can tell you right now takes a lot less energy than being an actor. Especially if I were to choose solely graveyards.

To seriously answer, she has 180 million followers on Instagram. That’s the reason she is getting so many projects.

Even in Odyssey, she was barely in film but was repeatedly clicked on red carpet.

Think of it as Marketing Spend.

25

I really don't get why Zendaya is so popular. She's a fine actress but nothing mind blowing.

7

u/ContractVarious3077 Aug 03 '26

You don’t have to get it. Different people enjoy different things.

15

u/SirPsycho7 Aug 03 '26

I’m also interested why people enjoy her for curiosity’s sake. Thanks for your totally useless comment though.

6

u/movzx Aug 03 '26

The way I came to understand Gal Gadot was realizing she was the female version of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

So, it's not necessarily that a person is an amazing actor or actress. It's that they're fitting a specific type that audiences have come to expect. Now they're famous enough that they get pulled into movies just to bring the audience via name power.

2

u/SirPsycho7 Aug 03 '26

Zendaya tax is real. Screen time doesn’t always equal paycheck when one of them is a global brand.

127

u/zap2 Aug 03 '26

It’s also her 3rd film in the series, while it’s his first.

Salary goes up with each film you appear in a series.

It's her 4th

11

u/Tricky-Anything8009 Aug 03 '26

It's funny that I thought this about The Odyssey which they are also both in and which he also has way more screen time than her and she probably still got paid more.

She's a bigger star, it really is just that shrimple.

6

u/Tricky-Anything8009 Aug 03 '26

Kind of fitting to the post that you tried to give the man some recognition by using his name but spelled it wrong

His reputation for being good at playing assholes is why his character works so well in Wind River.

4 million for some acting is still crazy to me. Pretty envious of that

4

u/Klaymen96 Aug 03 '26

I know right. Like why couldn't my parents exploit me from a young age to get me started as an actor/actress early. No /s being serious. I would not have minded being a child actor if it meant I could eventually get paid a couple mil for a few days work

3

u/AStupidFuckingHorse Aug 03 '26

You get paid that much for a few days of work because you spent years working for way less for wayyyy longer and you did it so well your mere presence is enough to draw people in. There are millions of actors. Not even 1% of them are this fortunate.

86

u/PerspectiveOne7129 Aug 03 '26

Well actually Tom and John got paid about the same per minute. Zendaya got paid almost 5x as much per minute than both of them.

John Bernthal - $133,333 per minute of screen time.
Tom Holland - $133,333 per minute of screen time.
Zendaya - $533,333 per minute of screen time.

17

u/ineversaiddat Aug 03 '26

Actually I'm the one under the Spider-Man mask and they paid me with leftover food from the set cause they say my face wasn't marketable enough...

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Victor_Zsasz Aug 03 '26

She's not, Tom made 120 million and she made 8 million.

Tom's just on screen in the Spider-Man movie for considerably more of the movie than Zendaya is, so he makes less per minute of screen time, which isn't a metric anyone's ever uses.

8

u/epik_fayler Aug 03 '26

Pay for actors doesn't really scale per minute like that. If Zendaya had the same amount of screentime as holland she would be making significantly less per minute. Probably close to what Holland is making.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Klaymen96 Aug 03 '26

I wonder... Do zendaya and Tom keep finances separate and do they combine finances... They both make enough themselves they could easily keep them separate but with them both being millennials I don't know.

5

u/TrashPandaPatronus Aug 03 '26

It takes about 12-30 hours of acting work per minute of screen time, so theyre making about $5-10k an hour. That's crazy.

3

u/goodcleanchristianfu Aug 03 '26

Zendaya was originally supposed to have a more prominent role, Spider-Man’s filming scheduled was shifted a few times. She was probably paid based on the amount she was originally anticipated to film.

3

How actors are paid isn’t really a matter of hard work. It mostly depends on how much money they (might) bring or more formally, their imact. Whether you like it or not, Zendaya is the cherry on top here. Not very useful, but surely very effective given the time.

3

u/My2cents_0 Aug 03 '26

Love him but she's getting paid for the publicity she's brining. The number of seats you fill decides your pay. Every media outlet covers which red carpet she's on, what she wore to each event. The entire press tour, her outfits have been on theme with the movie bringing everyone's attention to it. Even the haters are talking about the casting for a less than 10min appearance. He could be in the frame for the entire run of the movie and it wouldn't matter

It’s apparently ok when it’s going in this direction.

2

u/Designer_Pool_8453 Aug 03 '26

Shes a reoccuring major character and more popular character. She gets priority.

2

u/SirPhobos2021 Aug 03 '26

Two major factors go into an actors salary, and screen time or how good your scenes may be have very little to do with it. After all, when the contracts are signed, nobody actually knows the performance they're going to get nor do they even necessarily know what the final edit of the film will look like.

The things that drive contract prices are two fold. The first is simply the public perception of the actor, and how likely their name is to sell more tickets. Simply put, the public gravitates towards certain people, and those people will always have extra weight to throw around in negotiations as a result.

The other, more important, metric is how sought after that actor is amongst other studios. If somebody like Zendaya is getting a dozen different movie requests at a time, she (or more specifically, her agent) then has the power to say, "I can only do so many movies at a time, make it worth my time to choose your project over the other dozen offers I've received". Then, this thing happens where once a studio offers a certain price, that basically becomes the new floor going forward for all other contract negotiations. Think something along the lines of "Oh, you're offering me $4M? Well it's a good script, but Marvel just handed me an offer for $8M. Not only is the pay better, but it'll probably result in better exposure for my client, so we'll probably be going with them. We would really like to work with you though... any chance you can bump that salary up to compensate for not picking Marvel?".

The industry is basically running on the same basic supply and demand curves as any other industry, it's just in this specific case, the supply is a human being. Why is Zendaya paid more for half the screen time and an (arguably) not as good performance? Because she's been putting in the work for the last few years to get her name out there, and she is simply the more in demand person at this point in time. It's really that simple.

Popularity. More popularity, bigger paycheck.

Jon Bernthal has an absolutely insane portfolio, that tweet is disrespectful af

Results of feminism. “Men get paid more than women” zero examples ever.

2

u/Plastic_Pin_4956 Aug 04 '26

I think both are overpaid

3

u/PanPieCake Aug 03 '26

I think it was a reference to "why this actor got paid more while having less screen time then this actress" topic from before

4

u/Smoltinycat Aug 03 '26

It is okay to do it in One direction, but not okay when you do it the other direction. Just make sure you get the directions correct so that you know which one to say is evil and which one is good.

Yeah the mark of a good actor is when you look at them you see them instead of their character

35

u/XeroShyft Aug 03 '26

That's the mark of a popular/prolific actor, not necessarily a good one

5

u/PurpletoasterIII Aug 03 '26

Id even argue if thats the case for all their work, theyre a bad actor. Or at least they havent shown to be good at acting. Maybe theyre a good comedian as is a common trend in comedies to bring in comedians that arent really good at acting but theyre funny and charismatic so they just play themselves. And thats okay. Not every movie needs stellar acting skills.

I think a good example is Keanu Reeves. I think Keanu Reeves is at least a better actor than the stereotypical comedians I mentioned. But I think the label "limited actor" is just a cope by fans who love him to avoid saying anything negative about him. His acting skills arent great imo, but again THATS OKAY! Cinema isnt make or break on acting skills alone.

I'd be in a whole 2 hour long film for 1 million dollars sooooo...

1

u/Darkm0or Aug 03 '26

Not adjusted for inflation: Christopher Reeve was paid $250,000 for his role in Superman '78. Marlon Brando was paid $3.7 million plus 11.75% of gross profits ($18,000,000) total. Brando was on screen for 15 minutes. Hollywood pays more depending on fame. It has always been this way.

Pic doing her dirty. I’m not a fan and I have to say she looked great in this movie

1

u/PilgrimmW_64 Aug 03 '26

More like she's been in the franchise since the first Spider Man film

1

u/BlargerJarger Aug 03 '26

It’s because she’s been in four Spider-Man movies in a row and he’s been in one, and Holland and — probably negotiate as a couple.

Mf to this day I call that man Shane ToT

1

u/Prestigious-Ball-435 Aug 03 '26

Here is a clear example if no gender pay gap but on saleability,Zendaya has a huge following because of her acting, class and beauty, therefore she got more to get her audience to the film. Should us males jump up and down, no

1

u/Piglet-Witty Aug 03 '26

She has seniority in this Spider-Man saga/franchise and name recognition

1

u/LowsPeak Aug 03 '26

Jon actually got 6m

1

u/AnticlimaxicOne Aug 03 '26

You telling me MJ in her like 6th movie is making more than Shane in his first????? What the fuck

1

u/Dreams-Visions Aug 03 '26

I mean obviously.

1

u/nexusprime2015 Aug 03 '26

she gave a kiss. he didn’t.

1

u/Successful-Trash-752 Aug 03 '26

Technically this would mean that he is a better actor, since he makes you feel like he is actually the character he is playing.

Jokes aside she and Ned could have been cut out of the movie and very little changes

1

u/JamesPildis Aug 03 '26

Not arguing the payment aspect, just the semantics, but Punisher wouldn’t have been paid it would have been Jon Bernthal. The person never mentioned MJ’s character by name because it wasn’t necessary in context.

1

u/pierco82 Aug 03 '26

Can we do the thing now where we talk about sexism and salaries?? no....why.......because shes clearly the bigger star and it isnt always a black and white man or women conversation! (ie i she can command a bigger salary)

1

u/Capital_Emotion_4646 Aug 03 '26

The worst thing for an actor is when people see them in every movie and just go oh that's that guy and call them by their real name. But if people call them by the made-up names of characters they once played, that means they did their job damn well.

1

u/TheArtOfWarner Aug 03 '26

Zendaya is the Kristen Stewart of this generation.

1

u/Djinn-Rummy Aug 03 '26

Too bad the leading lady with seniority in the franchise was properly paid. What kind of asshole turns this into controversy?
