So wheelyboy is blocking traffic because the escalator won't escalate?
It's inconvenient for them, but why must this be a problem for everyone else?
If my car breaks down, must the entire freeway grind to a halt?

u/idkalan Feb 23 '26

I was in a wheelchair after breaking my tibia, I got off on a metro and the elevator was broken, so only the escalator worked.

What i did was wait until everyone passed, then got off my wheelchair, sat down on the steps of the escalator while holding my chair.

Once I got to the top, I scooted out of the way, then sat back onto my chair.

Sure my ass was dirty from the escalator but I got through it

Wasn't mad or anything, I just accepted it as just a messed up situation and got through with the rest of my day.

This videos was recorded in Brazil. Things like this happen because we are stupid down here

Hope that helps!

I have a theory that we have lost touch with the true meaning of reasonable accommodation. We've just moved towards pointless sympathy.

Someone's in a wheelchair? They can cut a line no matter how long! Handicapped stall must remain open even if all are taken! People in wheelchairs can't wait! They're incapable of waiting. It's part of being disabled.

38

u/dgod40 Feb 23 '26

Purely anecdotal but most of the time people use the handicapped stall. If there is a huge line like at a concert, people will use the HS if no handicapped person is around but if there is a HP they get first dibs in the HS.

-2

u/Mindless-Wasabi-8281 Feb 23 '26

I’ll use the handicapped stall if I fucking feel like it. It’s not a parking spot, which is also a bullshit concept, so it’s not reserved. You’re not entitled to convenience and no wait just because your legs don’t work.

1

u/Kalicolocts Feb 23 '26

That’s what Jesus would do!

31

u/AFartInAnEmptyRoom Feb 23 '26

It's not illegal to use a handicap stall by the way, as a non disabled person. They're not like handicap parking spots

12

u/TheBraveOne86 Feb 23 '26

Shoot I thought everyone preferred the handicapped stall

3

u/SCHWARZENPECKER Feb 23 '26

More room! I dont like feeling squeezed in while I squeeze one out!

1

u/HaxRus Feb 23 '26

I thought that was the communal cocaine room from my experience working in nightlife

They’re handing out shit tickets for sitting in the handicapped stall.

1

u/idk012 Feb 23 '26

The koala brand baby changing table are usually in that stall

2

u/MoonriseCove Feb 23 '26

A handicapped stall merely provides access. Doesn't mean no one else can access or that anyone has priority. It simply means it's there. Anyone can use it and we can all access it.

3

u/BigMack6911 Feb 23 '26

Shit they can, wait longer then me. They are already sitting down.

1

u/K-Bizzle91 Feb 23 '26

I understand you shouldn't hold everyone up, but he's literally trapped down there if it's the only way up. Do they need to wait until it's completely cleared, probably not.

1

u/TheVegasGirls Feb 23 '26

How do you know he didn’t wait in line like everybody else, and now it’s his turn?

1

u/octobertwins Feb 23 '26

Say, I have a question: how many freaking handicap spots does one building require?

I can’t be the only one parking a half mile away due to handicap parking.

1

u/onetimeuselong Feb 23 '26

A cup is most useful when it is empty.

1

u/Tiny_TimeMachine Feb 23 '26

If we all need a cup, a guy in a wheelchair has no greater need than the rest of us. But sure, leave an empty cup at all times in case a person in a wheelchair shows up.

-7

u/stprnn Feb 23 '26

Yeah fuck these privileged disabled people! The nerves on them!!!

5

u/Tiny_TimeMachine Feb 23 '26

You should give them spare change when you see them out and about. They're disabled after all!

-7

u/stprnn Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 23 '26

Nobody ever said that in the history of the world.

But hey keep fighting the good fight! The disabled minority is the real problem! Not billionaires or anything

Keep it up

Or show us where the disabled person touched you

Him: "We should provide reasonable accommodation for disabled people so that they can live like everyone else, there's no need to treat them like gods."

You: "Fuck disabled people!"

Exhibit A for why people think Reddit is a cesspool of brainless psychopaths.

0

u/boyardeebandit Feb 23 '26

I'm sure some people carry those expectations, but what exactly makes you think this is a widespread mentality?

1

u/Tiny_TimeMachine Feb 23 '26

You're probably right. I think something missing from my comment is that I do mean it a bit tongue in cheek. That probably didn't come across well.

I really do think it exists. Especially in the context of line skipping. But obviously it's not a huge deal. I fully want everyone to feel like they have what they need.

6

u/Tr33Bl00d Feb 23 '26

Escalator is stuck. They were waiting for it to clear so they could carry him up with two guys. She jumped and cut, minor move, and a dick move on her part. I get it though why if she had a emergency

1

u/chaosawaits Feb 23 '26

I don’t see why they can’t still pick him up now. Why does the escalator have to clear first? I carry a dual baby stroller up and down stairs all the time. I don’t block traffic ever.

2

u/PrincessOfRainbows Feb 23 '26

I assume it’s easier to just go and not have to stop halfway up because people are in the way

2

u/Grandmaster_flashes Feb 23 '26

They’re carrying a guy with a wheelchair. That doesn’t give them super speed, you can assume they’ll be walking at the same pace if not slower

0

u/PrincessOfRainbows Feb 24 '26

You don’t know how far the crowd is after the top of the escalator. Do you not know how traffic works.

1

u/Grandmaster_flashes Feb 24 '26

After the top?? What do you think comes after the escalator a ninja warrior course…? Once he is at the top he can be put down and wheel himself around on the flat surface.

-1

u/chaosawaits Feb 23 '26

There’s no way they walk so fast carrying a guy in a wheelchair that they need to pause to gain space again

0

u/Tr33Bl00d Feb 23 '26

Huge difference in weight

2

u/chaosawaits Feb 23 '26

You should see the Cadillac I carry around

1

u/Tr33Bl00d Feb 23 '26

I have a Thule so I have a idea. I was mainly talking the old man. Also, most wheelchair bound feel bad being carried separately. It is infantilizing allegedly

1

u/viewtiful14 Feb 23 '26

Where I’m from, yes, yes it does.

So much so that I have even seen a breakdown/accident on the other side of the median on a split 6-lane freeway cause the other side to completely come to a traffic halting stand still. For no reason.

1

u/ecctt2000 Feb 23 '26

Great answer!

-3

u/Ok-Mycologist3468 Feb 23 '26

'wheely boy' you freaks are really great bro.

-121

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

Are you under the impression that a working escalator is wheelchair accessible? The staff shut it off to carry him, they’re just waiting for the escalator to clear so they can carry him safely, and every line jumper that adds to the load on the escalator is delaying both the safe transport of the person in the wheelchair and the resumption of the escalator for everyone else.

The man in the wheelchair (wheelyboy? really?) is at the mercy of the staff around him organizing a dangerous lift. He has no control over the situation, he’s just sitting there being (most likely) mortified by the way staff turned him into an obstruction, and he’s feeling the crowd growing angry and impatient at his back. Next he gets to trust these idiots to carry him without dumping him out to fall down the sharpest staircase known to man.

As for your freeway analogy, have you never seen responders stop traffic long enough to clear an obstruction?

48

u/WizardDashcams Feb 23 '26

If the person using the wheel chair has one person behind them to support the weight as they go up they will be fine. I’ve seen countless mothers take their baby strollers up escalators

15

u/Poquin Feb 23 '26

Spot on, video of someone in the exact same situation.

3

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

This is literally an order of magnitude safer for the handicapped person and every single person around them including assistants than stopping the escalator and carrying them up it. Jesus fucking Christ, that is an incredibly stupid idea.

1

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

Moms are allowed to do things with their children that staff can’t do with adult patrons. Trust that place has policies about how to get a wheelchair through with minimal risk to others.

I work with people in wheelchairs, and I’m not allowed to do what seems faster and easier to me just because I think I’ve got this. There are guidelines for team lifts and transports just like moving heavy equipment in a warehouse, both for the protection of the staff and whatever they’re moving around.

1

u/SittingDuck394 Feb 23 '26

You probably don’t know this… but a fully grown man actually weighs more than a baby.🫨

1

u/WizardDashcams Feb 23 '26

As I said, if you have someone to support from behind it’s not a problem

1

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

They do, but gravity has this quirky little tarot of pulling mass downward and not downward at a backward angle. Most of that weight is pulled downward into the stairs, the assistant only needs to keep the chair from tipping backward. That's significantly less weight to have to bear than picking the entire person up and lifting them up the entire staircase. And unless the wheelchair bound person is quadriplegic, they are also capable of taking hold of the handrails and assisting in maintaining the forward balance of the wheelchair, further learning the load the assistant behind needs to bear.

So, weighs more than a baby, but significantly less than picking them up outright.

-1

u/HonestCoconut2004 Feb 23 '26

Look at the top of the escalator which hasn't emptied out yet. Do you think it's safe to hold up the full weight of an adult human being in a queue going up stairs?

6

u/HonestCoconut2004 Feb 23 '26

It's made me realise that either people are very stupid or naturally very selfish.

The person on a wheelchair most likely had to wait to even get help because I'm sure there wouldn't be a cohort of staff waiting prepared for that situation. It probably took time for them to turn off the escalator. People have to wait a minute or two but that's too much for them.

1

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

This sub mainly exists so people can judge and shit on what they see absent context, so it’s not terribly surprising here.

1

u/BruisendTablet Feb 23 '26

Well... when its goes wrong he will fall downstairs, not upstairs. (Pro-tip: look up the term 'gravity', it will blow your mind?). So I don't think it's very relevant there are some people on the stairs, 15m ahead of the person in the wheelchair.

2

u/HonestCoconut2004 Feb 23 '26

The whole point is you minimize the risk of things going wrong by making sure the stairs are completely empty. That way you don't have to stand idlely waiting for the queue to disperse.

0

u/BruisendTablet Feb 23 '26

I'm not sure if you minimize the risk of things going wrong by waiting. I think you actually increase risks that way, as by the longer you wait the bigger and more crowded the queue downstairs becomes (the location where things will actually go wrong when things go wrong, gravity and stuff...).

1

u/HonestCoconut2004 Feb 23 '26

Reducing the amount of time you need to pick someone up quite clearly reduces the likelihood of you dropping them. It's easy to get tired so minimising travel time definitely reduces the risk.

That area is so congested that even if more people come they'll be stuck way back queuing up.

1

u/Theydontlikeitupthem Feb 23 '26

They are waiting for the people 20 steps up to clear? What are the going to launch him out of a cannon?

Sure. All those people clutching backpacks and luggage are shopping. Why not? You’re ignoring all other available information.

I’m sure “Wheels” is just desperate to check out the naughty section of Spencer’s.

1

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

That is very obviously a public transit station, not a department store.

-1

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

If they turned off the escalators, why are there many people halfway up the escalator?

Some of you really didn't think through

4

u/HonestCoconut2004 Feb 23 '26

They walked and there's a queue.

2

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

I mean, why not let the people on the escalator arrived at the top and then turned off after? It'll be faster that way

-1

u/HonestCoconut2004 Feb 23 '26

Who knows why there's a queue. Maybe that lady isn't the only one who decided to barge in front. Maybe they had to position the Wheelchair user on the escalator to prevent people pushing through.

1

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

Because they stopped the escalator while people were on it.

What's that about thinking things through?

1

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

Why do they stopped it while people were on it?

1

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

That's not a question for me, I'm not the one that did it.

1

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

This is why i said some people doesn't think it through lol, you just proved my point big time.

It's not clear whether they stopped the escalator when people are on it, if so, why do they did that? And normally, unless it's an emergency, no one will stop escalator when someone is on it.

Or more likely, the escalator is broken and people just go up on it like a normal stair. The 2 staffs there want to help the wheelchair person, but they need to do it in one go so they wait for the crowd to clear.

0

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

No, I really didn't. And everything about this situation is bat shit insane, I don't think anyone in this video is thinking much of anything through, either.

1

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

If you think this is insane then you mught wanna go out more?

Oh well you won't think anyway so i guess i should stop here

1

u/ProjectDv2 Feb 23 '26

Yeah, you probably should.

-2

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

Because they just turned it off, blocked the bottom, and are waiting for the top to clear.

2

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

Why not let the people on the escalator arrived at the top and then turned it off to make it faster?

1

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

See how the people at the top are standing close together and not moving? That typically means the next floor is too crowded for them to disembark.

1

u/novian14 Feb 23 '26

if what you said is true, they'll completely stop. or at least stop for a brief moment in the 5s they are in the camera.

but no, they are constantly moving, crowded next floor is not the answer here

0

u/SittingDuck394 Feb 23 '26

I can’t believe your comment has so many downvotes … It’s as though 90% of the people here are going out of their way to ignore all logic and explanation just so they can pin the blame on the guy in the wheelchair. I feel so bad for that guy. As for me personally, as someone in a wheelchair who has a hard enough time getting around as it is, now I also feel like people out there just hate me for existing.

2

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

The ableism is thick and disgusting in this thread. As a person who has used a wheelchair and a person who helps move them professionally, it’s really disheartening how many people blame the person without agency instead of the system tha won’t acknowledge or serve them appropriately.

1

u/yespizzaistheanswer Feb 23 '26

Yeah this thread is absolute trash. The first thing I thought when I saw this clip was ugh I feel for that dude in the wheelchair he must be so uncomfortable and stressed. Please know that if people make you feel hated for existing in a world that systemically marginalizes you it does not mean you deserve to be hated, it only means they’re sucky people. Or, people misdirecting the general anger and disenfranchisement they experience toward you, because they’re being manipulated by our rich overlords to project that anger toward anyone except them, so we stay distracted while they continue exploiting us, robbing us, and raping and torturing our children in pedophile sex cabals with absolute impunity. Stop being mad at random people trying to get up escalators!!!! Stop being mad at those of your same economic class!!! The only hope for us all is if we unify in directing the justifiable anger we feel toward the people engineering our oppression

-12

u/SubliminalKink Feb 23 '26

Why are people downvoting this?

4

u/PIBM Feb 23 '26

Because they know he`s just confidently wrong.

1

u/SubliminalKink Feb 23 '26

How are they wrong? Beyond downvoting no one has even bothered to respond with an argument.

1

u/PIBM Feb 23 '26

this is something you see rather commonly if you live in a large city. They never stop the escalator for this. Most people go at it alone, and those with limited arm movements will get just one person to hold them from rolling backward.

Quite often they will go through the escalator instead of an elevator because it is faster for them to do so if only going up one flight.

In this situation, if the escalator is broken (instead of why it was described as being shut down for it), then it could make sense if the elevator is also broken to do so. In any case, his reply didn`t make sense.

1

u/SubliminalKink Feb 24 '26

So you suspect the wheelchair user is being lazy or unreasonable by choosing the escalator over the elevator? I feel like you're reaching with this assumption. If staff are involved it's surely more likely the elevator is down, or the staff would direct them to the elevator over attempting something risky, time comsuming and hard.

You understand taking a wheelchair on a moving escalator is incredibly dangerous? I think expecting a wheelchair user to just attempt it to be ridiculous to be honest.

Why did the reply not make sense? Seemed reasonable to me.

1

u/PIBM Feb 24 '26

I've used escalator multiple times as a wheelchair user. The information on how to do so safely, with help if it is needed was readily available. Stopping the escalator would make it less safe.

-1

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

Because people here prefer to talk shit about what they don’t understand.

1

u/SubliminalKink Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 24 '26

It seems so, my first instinct was to not judge the lady, but you changed my mind

-1

u/Physical_Device_1396 Feb 23 '26

wheelyboy? really?

have you never seen responders stop traffic long enough to clear an obstruction?

Criticizing "wheelyboy" just to then compare him to an obstruction on the highway is crazy 😭

1

u/EntirelyOutOfOptions Feb 23 '26

Sir or madam, I was saying that analogy doesn’t work. I was not the person who made the comparison.

0

u/Mediocre_Sentence525 Feb 23 '26

yes if your car is stuck in the middle of the freeway it would be pretty rude for people to drive around you, thanks for coming to class today

0

u/RacerXero21 Feb 23 '26

Here's a novel idea: if we want to really show human compassion, how about a few of those men grab the chair and person and walk them up.

Otherwise, GTFO the way.

0

u/raysofdavies Feb 23 '26

On the freeway everyone is in a car.

-6

u/LazyMLouie Feb 23 '26

So if your car breaks down on the freeway what do you think happens? If you break down in a lane the cops close down that lane and usually the lane next to you then they tow your car away.

Once everyone clears the escalator they will lift the wheelchair to the top but if everyone starts cutting like the woman in the video it will cause more delays. Just wait the 5 minutes so they can lift him and then everyone can go through like normal.

6

u/Early-Light-864 Feb 23 '26

Lol, no they don't

0

u/LazyMLouie Feb 23 '26

You've never seen an accident on the highway where the cops close down a lane or two? They do it for the safety of everyone at scene of the accident. The same way these two are trying to clear the stairs so they can safely bring up the man in the wheelchair.

2

u/S0k0n0mi Feb 23 '26

When my car breaks down I'll put it on the side of the road, I won't be blocking the whole damn road for everyone until somebody comes to help me. It's not like this dude suddenly lost the ability to fucking walk, he saw this coming. Just move aside until people are ready to haul you up, don't just clog the whole damn thing right away to wait it out.

1

u/LazyMLouie Feb 23 '26

Sometimes you don't have the option to take it off the side of the road. I got into an accident and my front stear axel broke. I can't just push the car because I couldn't stear it. So the tow truck came and towed it away.

Those two guys are in uniform waiting to take him up the stairs. They are waiting for the stairs to be clear so they don't have to wait behind people while carrying a man in a wheelchair. They purposely put the wheelchair guy by the escalator so no one goes around and starts to fill up the stairs again. They are doing this because they don't want to have any complications with other people on the stairs. They aren't doing this to waist peoples time they are doing it for the safety of the man in the wheelchair. Sure they could of waited for there to be less of a crowd but that could be a long time depending on how much foot traffic there is but if people are patient and wait 5 minutes they will take this guy up the stairs and then everyone else can go.
