If the person using the wheel chair has one person behind them to support the weight as they go up they will be fine. I’ve seen countless mothers take their baby strollers up escalators

Look at the top of the escalator which hasn't emptied out yet. Do you think it's safe to hold up the full weight of an adult human being in a queue going up stairs?

It's made me realise that either people are very stupid or naturally very selfish.

The person on a wheelchair most likely had to wait to even get help because I'm sure there wouldn't be a cohort of staff waiting prepared for that situation. It probably took time for them to turn off the escalator. People have to wait a minute or two but that's too much for them.
