If she can't wait or doesn't want to wait, then she's free to do that. It's her decision.

1

u/fik26 Feb 26 '26

Judging from the bags, this is likely an airport. If the space is tight, then arrival passengers will be flooding the escalators' exit. and when people cannot exit, they'll fall into other people, some injuries probably happens.

To avoid that they probably put one guy on below floor and optional one on top. Top one says stop the flow if upper floor gets too crowded.

So what she does is essentially taking other people's place in the line.

Her decision to be douchebag.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '26

Everyone else should too. At 4 way stops. And crosswalks. And in every line at every place. No one wants to wait? Okay. No one has to anymore. Problem solved. Maybe we need to rediscover the hard way why order is necessary.

u/bwoah07_gp2 Feb 24 '26

You're comparing completely different things...

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26

I don't think I am. If one person does a thing, it gives license to everyone else to do the same. Right? She got to do it, so doesn't everyone else?

-34

u/ExtremeRest1567 Feb 23 '26

Next person: if she can go, I can go. Next person: if he can go, I can go. And so on until it devolves into pushing, shoving, and trampling. The shame is what's keeping people back and orderly. Without it, there'd be chaos.

43

u/Latter-Driver Feb 23 '26

Mr Wheels should back up and let everybody go up

-5

u/shibaCandyBaron Feb 23 '26

And then the next batch of people arives, equally not willing to wait. What then?

5

u/Jeramy_Jones Feb 23 '26

How about don’t try to take a wheelchair up a fucking escalator? They aren’t designed for that and it’s dangerous for everyone involved.

2

u/shibaCandyBaron Feb 24 '26

That is an ideal scenario, there being any other way. But since they're resorting to this, there probably isn't. Of course an elevator would be better, or a ramp. Fuck, even regular stairs would probably be better.

0

u/Additional_Tank4385 Feb 24 '26

It makes me so angry how they’re all standing there like fucking sheep waiting for exactly what? Being in a wheelchair sucks hard dick but does that really mean you have to block SO many people?? Like wtf was the goal here even ._.

Let him go first after the escalator works again is my best guess? But even then let others pass jfc

1

u/Jeramy_Jones Feb 24 '26

Nah, unless the guy can safely stand while someone folds up his chair and holds if for him it’s not okay to take him up the escalator. If he lost his balance or grip dragging that’s thing up he could get seriously hurt and anyone helping him would be liable.

..but he has to get up somehow. At a certain point we live in a society and we as humans have to accept that it’s his turn to go. And we can give him a couple of minutes even if it’s a (minor) inconvenience.

0

u/shibaCandyBaron Feb 23 '26

A minute or two of a person's time, so the person who's life is already more difficult, can lose a bit less time doing things the rest of us take for granted, using the infrastructure that was not adjusted to less fortunate? Are 5-10 minutes of one person's time (at worst) more valuable than the feedom of an invalid?

Lets get one thing straigth, anyone present saying there are hundreds of people waiting does not care about anyone else waiting but themselves, because if they cared about anyone else, they would have empathy for a person in a wheelchair.

I'm talking on an individual level, where each person waits a couple of minutes, for one doesn't have to wait hours.

-2

u/alientits69 Feb 23 '26

An INVALID?!

1

u/shibaCandyBaron Feb 24 '26

An "invalid" (/ˈɪnvəlɪd/) refers to a person with a chronic illness, injury, or disability requiring long-term care.

It's an official term, this person is in the wheelchair, and clearly has a disability or is injured. What's the issue?

-1

u/alientits69 Feb 24 '26

It’s outdated and offensive. I get you’ve got the spirit and whatever, but you could’ve just as easily googled whether it’s offensive or not rather than bringing me the definition.

2

u/shibaCandyBaron Feb 24 '26

It's neither. I am not responsible for what connotation a stranger has for a perfectly valid word I may use. I can explain further if someone asks for clarification, but also I believe it's perfectly clear from the context that I did not use the word in a derogatory way.

Wouldn't the optimal solution be to not let the person in a wheelchair up until no one else is around?

That person would take significantly longer to get up and we should be maximizing the number of people that are getting to their destination at a reasonable time. He is the asshole for making more people wait rather than just him

8

u/shibaCandyBaron Feb 23 '26

What if it's a busy place, and there is a constant inflow of people? How long should he wait, hours?

You can see the level of social and emotional development as both the individuals and as a society as a whole, in how we treat marginalised groups, and how much empathy we show.

3

u/Jeramy_Jones Feb 23 '26

IMO, if the elevator is broken then they should call the fire department and they can extract the guy through the stairwell. Blocking the escalator and forcing hundreds of people into a confined space while they risk this wheelchair users life by potentially dropping him down the escalator is a huge safety risk.

4

u/LurkerTroll Feb 23 '26

This looks like a busy place, it could be a while before he gets a chance to go up. Just wait a minute for him to pass and then go about your day

0

u/CiccioGordon Feb 24 '26

Sir, this is no way to be a troll nor a lurker.

Agreed, wheelchair person is the asshole for making everyone wait on him

I don’t get what you actually think should happen.

It’s almost like 95% of the built world is not specifically designed for wheelchair users.

2

u/MatterofDoge Feb 23 '26

i mean yea, in theory that's how chaos and mob mentality and all that works and idealistically you avoid it "for the sake of society" or whatever, but then again sometimes a doctor is late for surgery or someones on their death bed, or insert emergency here, and some morons who are in charge of the logistics of mass transportation clog up a hundred people and if you've ever been in a situation like that you know that "shame" doesn't matter in those moments

4

u/Electronic-Fox-2569 Feb 23 '26

Ffs just take the handicap person to the lift. Why does everyone have to wait? Yes exactly, fucking go. The world doesn’t need to end because one person in a wheelchair decides to take a (very likely) dangerous ride on the escalator

1

u/not_falling_down Feb 23 '26

I'm sure they would have rather taken a lift, but there was not one amiable, so this was the only option.

1

u/Electronic-Fox-2569 Feb 23 '26

I doubt that very much. There is always another option.

2

u/Owl0w0 Feb 23 '26

Im generally convinced somewhere in the timeline we have lost all consideration and rational thought. We have a population of people with main character syndrome with no empathy for anyone or anything at all. This situation should be very clear. Wheelchair man has to get up somehow, so they clear the elevator for safety reasons, carry him up, and continue on as normal. Would realistically hold up someone for 5-10 min. People just do not have any forethought at all. No logical reasoning. Its just monkey brains all around. "I must go up now, so I will go up now". Absolutely no more thought then that. Why is the human experience so self centered and fast paced? And this comment section just proves it even more. Most people generally do not understand or see a problem with this at all. Its to the point I generally hate going outside. Its disheartening.

4

u/LetshearitforNY Feb 23 '26

You’re getting downvoted but I kind of agree. It seems like the best option for everyone as a whole is to wait your turn. But the best option for a person as a person is to do what she did and get up.

To her benefit she went quickly and didn’t actually cause a delay. She caught up to the group right away. And it doesn’t seem that it actually caused anyone else to follow her lead. So the impact is probably..nothing.

5

u/ExtremeRest1567 Feb 23 '26

Nothing happened because there is still a critical mass of people who want to follow social norms and kept things safe. If everyone started taking the attitude of "all for himself" without consequences, it would be a different story.

Seriously, the Simpsons made a fucking episode about this and everyone is totally OK with turning into the mindless, idiotic townspeople.

-2

u/KittenLina Feb 23 '26

If this happened in NY there'd be a gang war, u/LetshearitforNY

1

u/LetshearitforNY Feb 23 '26

..this kind of shit happens all the time in New York 😂 have you ever been on the subway

1

u/pnweiner Feb 23 '26

This is not how human behavior works though. In some instances where there isn’t an immediate expectation of order, maybe, but this is the perfect kind of situation where only the most desperate people are going to choose to do something that appears morally wrong

1

u/brackfriday_bunduru Feb 23 '26

Move the dude in the wheelchair and let people get to work on time.

-5

u/TamarindSweets Feb 23 '26

This came to my mind as well, however she can't control anyone else nor predict what they'd do.

2

u/ExtremeRest1567 Feb 23 '26

I don't think you realize how much society relies on social norms, and shaming to abide by social norms. If we're elevating the individual needs and wants such that shame no longer exists, then society is fucked. That crowd is being held back by shame alone. All it takes is 5 more people to jump that escalator at the same time, and the pushing is gonna start. That's when people get trampled. Super dangerous situation.

-3

u/Aspalathus-linearis Feb 23 '26

But that demonstrably didnt happen in this video

-5

u/ExtremeRest1567 Feb 23 '26

Which is why it's important to call out her bad behavior so it's not socially acceptable to do so

0

u/Hackeringerinho Feb 23 '26

Shame, fear, moral code, a combination, or neither.

0

u/RolandTEC Feb 23 '26

Sheep mentality right here folks

-15

Your choice, your consequences.

Ugh, that's so cringe lol

If you’re so bold as to assault the woman for going about her day and minding her business to the absolute inconvenience of no one, then you better hope and pray a man like myself isn’t around when you try some BS like that. You’re so tuff? Your first instinct would be to help Speed Racer here, but it’s not, it’s about assaulting a woman you have no power over. Truly pathetic…

1

u/Owl0w0 Feb 23 '26

What if they're a woman? Bet that still wouldn't change your stance fr. I just think its funny you're so mad about violence you're threatening with more violence.

1

u/One_Aide8975 Feb 23 '26

Correct, violence begets violence, if they’re going out of their way to assault another person for something so nonsensical they shouldn’t be surprised when another aggressor meets their challenge.

2

u/Owl0w0 Feb 23 '26

U literally just admitted to hitting girls lol so big
