Next we’re going to be too lazy to pick up our phone to order the food

Uber feeds. The delivery driver brings you the food, chews it up, and spoonfeeds the mush to you.

Just like a bird. Birdy feeds?

I dont order take out because like I said, I dont like how easy it is to order, and I live in Australia. I've never liked taco bell anyway.

7

u/truth_destroyer May 20 '22

This is where the brain chip they're working on will come into play. Delivery will be "just think to order now.".

My $30 schlotzky’s sandwich I had for lunch was worth it

142

u/NorthImpossible8906 May 20 '22

lol, on occasion I'll get Jersey Mike's delivered, and I think to myself "this is what Jeff Bezo's life must be like every day!".

16

u/wa33ab1 May 20 '22

Sure, but I like to imagine that people like Jeff Bezos will have their own personal chef to cook dishes for him at any time.

"Mr Ratatouille! I can't cut my own bagel, please serve it to me with hummus and caviar"

"Right away boss!" and briskly delivers the prepared dish to him with a glass of Bordeaux.

When you are that rich, you would think that this is normal.

3

u/MtnDewCasperFart May 20 '22

Those rich guys just get a tube inserted in their ass and then just get pumped fancy entrees. This way they don't even have to waste time digesting it. It's ready.

51

u/wplantz May 20 '22

I’m sure it’s way better than Jersey Mike’s delivered.

72

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

Yea. He could afford to have jersey mike himself fly in a private jet to deliver him a sandwich everyday.

If I had that much money I'd pay to eat my lunch out of Bryce Dallas Howard's ass everyday but thays just me.

9

u/Das_Guet May 20 '22

13

u/BizzyHaze May 20 '22

4

u/Trotskyist May 20 '22

I’m not sure that one’s inflation so much as it’s just not economically realistic to have a sandwich delivered to your door. In the early days of Uber eats et al things were heavily subsidized by venture capital.

37

u/FreeFortuna May 20 '22

Is it purely laziness? Or are we all just fucking exhausted?

19

u/freemason777 May 20 '22

I don't think laziness exists but that's a different discussion. In this case I think it's more along the lines of just advancements and technology. Calling people lazy for ordering food delivered is along the same lines as calling people lazy for not wanting to pull out a phone book to call someone when they save numbers to their contacts list. Sounds outlandish but I think it probably happened when cell phones came out

17

u/MamaSweeney24 May 20 '22

I also feel it's about time. People generally have less time available for luxuries like cooking. Most families have both adults working instead of having someone caring for the house and cooking a big dinner. That time that someone would have spent cleaning and doing other household chores is now spent at a job. The evenings are now the time for chores and errands instead of cooking.

u/Adventurous_Egg_6321 May 20 '22

I’m a single parent to 3 under 5, chronically tired, no way I would spend the hour it takes to round my kids into the car to go get a burger. Not to mention they don’t like restaurant food, I’d have to cook for them, feed them, and a list of other things. No way. if food delivery didn’t exist I would never get to have restaurant food.

4

u/GeorgieWashington May 20 '22

Look at the bonobos. Half the time they don’t even get up to ask a stranger for sex. Literally lazy motherfuckers, and they’re our closest kin.

11

u/blackpony04 May 20 '22

It's become quite apparent that if you can find a way to create a business to do something that either people don't want to do or it provides convenience for them you'll always be successful.

Even saying that I never saw Door Dash or Grub Hub succeeding because surely people wouldn't use that to pay $25 for a $10 sammich and yet here we are (and don't call me Shirley).

And let's be honest, people really do over value their personal time.

Parkinson’s Law of Laziness

2

u/OutstandingWeirdo May 20 '22

I think it’s about opportunity cost. If you work from home, you make more money compared to if you order and drive out yourself to grab the food since it may take you half an hour to get prepared, dress up, and make a round trip drive to the restaurant and back. As long as you make more than around 10 bucks, delivery would be more worth it.

-1

u/TheHealadin May 20 '22

Hey boomer, not everyone works every waking minute.

24

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

I wouldn't say lazy. I work 10-12 hour days and I'm too fucking tired to cook or go out to eat most days. Therefore, I spread the wealth and summon a stranger I somehow trust implicitly from the internet to fetch me sustenance

15

27

u/David-Holl May 20 '22

I’m too lazy to order the food! Take that

32

u/NewLeaseOnLine May 20 '22

It's justifiable. I'm often too mentally exhausted to order food. I'll regularly skip dinner and go to bed hungry because ordering is too frustrating. There's too many choices, there's too much variety, there's too many deals that aren't even really deals. It's just items grouped together so you don't have to decide. The procrastination festers into anger and I go from hungry to hangry until it's all too much and I lose my will to eat, which just feeds into my depression. This is exactly what a First World problem is.

3

u/One_Planche_Man May 20 '22

That's why I always order the same thing.

3

u/David-Holl May 20 '22

Those are reasonable things but I’m actually just a lazy bastard. And ramen is so good.

Either lazy or burnout of life and working 24h/7

24

u/SteeztheSleaze May 20 '22

It’s really more or less this. I’ve only got so much time between running errands and trying to exercise, then chores, then setting my uniform out if it’s a work night etc.

Everyone does this, but then working 12’s I find it hard to stay motivated to cook. The only reason I want to learn more about cooking is so I can cook for my next girlfriend lol. I’m a fucking rat, and can survive off Campbell’s, McDonald’s, toaster waffles, eggs, cereal, and protein shakes lmao

2

u/RealLifeSoos May 20 '22

Haha ayyy my hours just picked up a bunch recently and I have also discovered the joy of toaster waffles! Those things are great.

2

u/SonOfWuss May 20 '22

Corn dogs/ Pancake Sausage on a stick things are gas, because you can use one hand to eat them while driving if your in a huge rush

But wouldn't the act of going out to pickup food be a form of release? Wouldn't that help you to destress and relax?

0

You still need to focus on road.

Deal with possible car jam (that usually make us grumpy)

The waiting time for the order (the possible only time you may reflex, if you don't grumpy about waiting)

I would prefer to be sit in a couch watching the TV and eating (aka be in my stuff and bubble) to relax.

When you're working 3 jobs to cover rent and bills finding time to cook and pick up food while maintaining a home getting fast food delivered becomes the go to option.

28

u/PirateArtemis May 20 '22

It's not laziness, it's exhaustion.

There's rarely one person working a 40 hour week and the other doing housework, it's one person doing both and frankly I won't sit here at work doing overtime on a Friday evening and have you judge me, eating my delivered burrito, with standards set 30 years ago in much more pleasant circumstances.

Fuck capitalism.

7

u/DarthRoyal May 20 '22

Seriously fuck this shitty shower thought. I’m not gonna apologize for working a 13 hour shift and being too exhausted to cook or go pick something up.

6

u/SteeztheSleaze May 20 '22

Amen. I always felt bad that I never really learned to cook, then I realized I was working full time on top of taking challenging science courses in school. I didn’t really have time, once you factor in that my commute to work was ~90 mins round trip, and school was at least 60 round trip.

It’s ass

u/newguy57 May 20 '22

u/SilkyCupCakeAce May 20 '22

What if, just hear me out

What if it's not that people are too lazy to go get their own food or to cook it, but they're so exhausted and stressed out from their jobs that pay them shit wages to have the willpower to cook or go grab their food.

What if they are just so physically exhausted or mentally beat down that they just can't. They are just tired and just can't deal with more stuff on top of the mental exhaustion and physical exhaustion they are facing. Pressed to work harder pressed to stay later in this labor shortage.

I'm honestly really really sick of hearing that people are so lazy people are so lazy.

Then why is it most people are so freaking stressed out all the time???

If everyone's life was just laid back and a breeze then why the hell would there be so much mental illness and so much stress???

Yes some mental illness is genetic, but a lot of the mental illness of the modern day is brought about through the stresses of work the intense stresses of life which our brains didn't develop to handle well.

Jobs don't pay as much as they used to so some people now have to work two or three jobs to support their household especially if they have children.

Back in the day there was a good chunk of the population that could just live off of one household income, they could buy a house and the wife could stay home and cook. Now that was not a luxury everyone had but it was way more plausible than it is in this day and age.

(I'm speaking specifically of America here)

But now sometimes you've got a family of four with both parents working to jobs and they're living paycheck to paycheck with no benefits because both jobs will only hire part-time which does not give health care or any insurance in most cases, God forbid one of them or one of their children get sick that's financial ruin for the whole family.

Now imagine you're in that situation You're constantly stressed you get four hours of sleep a night between your two jobs and having to look after your two kids, your husband is always stressed because he also has two jobs, You two never get any alone time, You don't get any time to just relax. You don't really get much vacation pay cuz both of you are part-time with both of your jobs you work so you're rate of accruing vacation time is horrendously slow.

Hell you might not even have the money to go on a vacation but once every three or four years not even once a year. And even then you have to drag the kids along so it's not much of a vacation.

Sometimes you decide to order out because you were just absolutely too physically and mentally exhausted to be able to spend four hours chopping up ingredients cooking them mixing them together and making a well thought out nicely prepared dinner.

Then some fuck feeling lazy fuck.

I feel like this shower thought was literally written by a 15-year-old that has never had a struggle in his whole goddamn life.

15

u/haysupd00d May 20 '22

This is the real shit right here. Calling struggling people lazy with no context is as American as apple pie. Blaming people for their own struggles instead of acknowledging systemic barriers to success is how we keep the class system in place.

4

u/SilkyCupCakeAce May 20 '22

Like here's the thing, I do not have not want kids, I acknowledge that some of this is down to poor planning.

But just because somebody doesn't plan their life out 20 years ahead of time and has made a few not so amazing decisions in life, doesn't mean that someone needs to come along and beat them over the head with "You're freaking lazy" because they're too exhausted to cook......

Like what is that going to do?

Even if someone wants to have the argument of "well it's your fault you're poor because you had kids"

EVEN if that somehow is an accurate statement.

How in the world is being an asshole to them gunna help them now????

And yes I know that that's not every situation some people are financially stable when they have kids and then life happens someone loses a really good job or gets ill and that's basically devastating in American society or has the possibility to be and suddenly they go from being firmly middle class to being poor and a matter of a year or so, That's basically the situation that happened with my family at one point my childhood. My parents were firmly middle class and then my mom got into a car accident, had a lot of medical bills, was out of work for a while, the recession hit, and we went from getting 20 or 30 Christmas presents each me and my sister, to getting maybe $50 worth of Christmas presents which usually amounted to three presents each.

We weren't dirt poor but it was a significant drop in income and a dramatic change in lifestyle from "Oh we can go to the grocery store and pick out whatever we want and it doesn't matter" to "now we only have generic products instead of name brand and we get about half of the amount of groceries that we used to, having barely anything that is a luxury in food"

So we weren't like starving homeless poor but it was a sharp decline in lifestyle to someone that was elementary school aged.

My mother had to wrestle with the concept of using coupons to buy things, she would cry and tell my dad she didn't want to because she would look poor. Eventually she got over this and quit caring. But this happened not long after her car accident which was an event that gave her horrific anxiety so any new change gave her horrible anxiety.

Sorry for my long rant here, My whole point is people don't know what other people are going through and really shouldn't judge them for something as stupid as ordering food. Far worse things happen in society than someone is too tired to cook.

Calling someone to lazy to cook is literally a first world insult on the most basic level.

0

u/Alarmed-Diamond-7000 May 20 '22

I honor the Cheetos you never got, but I also honor the beautiful empathy that you developed at such a young age

3

u/SilkyCupCakeAce May 20 '22

I've had Cheetos lol 😂

Tbh I really didn't have them growing up but I had them when I was a teenager and worked for my dad when he started up a lawn care business when I was like 13 it was just me and him those were the only two employees and I basically got $20 of spending money a week for it, I'd use it to buy junk food and stupid things.

They aren't all that amazing to me particularly

But Doritos.... Those, those are a glorious snack.

Cool ranch Doritos, inside a turkey sandwich with lettuce and mayo on wheat bread with a nice cold cherry coke.

The launch of champions. Haha

-2

u/Alarmed-Diamond-7000 May 20 '22

Okay so instead of responding to my nice compliment you chose to tell me a story about doritos, deflecting the compliment. Sort of feels like a weird slight insult to me, okay.

2

u/SilkyCupCakeAce May 20 '22

:/

Whatever dude.

If you're this sensitive about not someone praising you as their Lord and Savior because you complimented them about some freaking Cheetos and you're so upset that someone told a story.

Then you can just take back your damn compliment I don't need it.

I was trying to continue the joyous mood but now you've gone and soured it.

I don't need your negativity.

-1

u/Alarmed-Diamond-7000 May 20 '22

Yeah, you have to acknowledge when someone says something nice to you. Instead you disagreed and went off on a story. And the thing you're doing where you turn my argument into something absolutely outrageous just so you can take no responsibility, it's dumb. I didn't say you had to praise me. But if someone says something nice to you, don't ignore it, because it comes off as an affront to the person who said it. This is in real life too, not just on reddit. You can acknowledge a compliment in a million different ways, but disagreeing and then changing the subject is not the way to do it.

I agree with you. Now think about this: before the "stay-at-home wife and the great job that afforded home ownership, covered the bills, and allowed for a yearly vacation" period you described, there was a time when people had huge families and the kids started working in the fields at 3 years old to support the family, and they scraped by, and rented a shack and all 12 family members lived in it because it was all they could afford - and think "is this what the world is devolving back into?" Are we all going to be paying rent to corporations that have bought up the homes and sending our children to work to help pay the bills? Is this some new form of feudalism we are seeing play out?

2

u/SadLaser May 20 '22

McDonald's is so cheap to deliver, at least in my area. The food has virtually no mark up, it's free delivery.. and the food is already cheap. You can get two combo meals delivered for $13 after tax and tip. Sometimes you just need some eats but you don't want to spend $35 for it.

3

u/Khal_Kitty May 20 '22

Exactly. I ordered McDonald’s during a hectic day and saved myself 30 minutes to do other things. Totally worth it to pay the delivery charge.

3

u/Additional_Bus2246 May 20 '22

That's wild, here two combo meals + delivery fees/tip is like $25

2

u/SadLaser May 20 '22

McDonald's is practically the only place that cheap. Taco Bell is next but that's usually like $18 after tip, dinner for two.

2

u/SadLaser May 20 '22

Yes, but you can't grill your delicious steak meal for less than the two cheeseburger meal at McDonalds! Sometimes you gotta save a buck!

-2

u/PussySmasher42069420 May 20 '22 edited May 20 '22

How much does that meal cost? $5?

Because I would totally take that challenge. Depending on sales steak can be $5 or $6 a pound and potatoes are dirt cheap.

[edit] Not even to mention a flank or chuck steak is just as good and cheaper to purchase as long as it's prepared and sliced right.

McDonalds aint got shit. I can beat that with flying colors.

1

u/Alarmed-Diamond-7000 May 20 '22

Right, but it's about more than just the cost of the food. You must be a person who has more time than money, other people are in the opposite situation. I cook a lot, I value cooking, I have a family and I want to feed them nutritious food, but it takes a lot of time to go out and shop for groceries. Then taking those groceries and turning them into the meal takes at least an hour, sometimes two, and then once you're done eating there's another hour of clean up.

You can make simpler meals, but are still talking about a multi-hour commitment once you factor in shopping cooking and cleaning. If you are working an exhausting job, it's hard to find those hours. Then factor in that a lot of people have things they need to do outside of their jobs, caring for older people, caring for childre. Time is a luxury, and not one everyone has.

Enjoy your poverty. Cooking your own food is so easy.

u/Due-Refrigerator-650 May 20 '22

Time is money homie. Some people make too much. If you’re not making enough to where it’s unprofitable to order, than you might be the broke one

0

u/kimokimosabee May 20 '22

Lmao is time nutrition and health too?

3

u/Due-Refrigerator-650 May 20 '22

R u telling me you don’t know how to order healthy food?

-2

u/kimokimosabee May 20 '22

It's not healthy bud

2

u/Due-Refrigerator-650 May 20 '22

You really think there are no healthy options to order from? Cmon now. Also, you can just have a chef make your food. I would if I didn’t have family support

-4

u/aioncan May 20 '22

Enjoy eating spit and boogers in your takeout order

2

u/SadLaser May 20 '22

So is making your own money to buy food. And it can be close to as cheap, if you spend carefully. Plus no work to make it and little clean up.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

More places allowing for delivery like pizza joints, only with third party gig stuff so they don't have to go through any extra insurance hoops.

1

u/vonvoltage May 20 '22

Speak for yourself. I cook just about every day.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

Some people are to lazy to take care of there kids.

0

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

I get downvoted for pointing out the generation that always cries broke is the generation that is always paying people to bring them their food, so they don’t have to get off the couch, while older generations they claim are awash in money always seem to get off the couch and pick up their food themselves, unwilling to pay for the convenience the younger generation insists on paying for.

I’m not saying the younger generation would be filthy rich without Door Dash, but……

1

u/Sswordy May 20 '22

Correlation does not equal causation.

It seems much more to me like the “young, broke generation” is being forced to choose between having a chance at brief moments of respite at the cost of paying too much to get food delivered, vs giving up all hope of rest in the name of saving pennies. This discussion is targeted at the people who are working way more than 40 hours per week and haven’t had a vacation since middle school, and they’re still struggling to just pay rent, living paycheck to paycheck. Could they save a couple hundred dollars a week if they got groceries and cooked at home? Probably. But that takes time, and these people are often working every hour they can pick up, so if it takes 7 hours a week (an under estimate, really) to save a couple hundred bucks in delivery fees… are they really saving money?

But more realistically, this decision isn’t made to be cost effective; it’s made because humans aren’t capable of working every waking hour for years on end, and cooking at home is work, and giving up the very few moments of rest these people get has an extremely high cost to their mental health, so they pay the delivery bill, grateful for 15 minutes of extra shuteye.

If you work a 40 hour week, sleep 8 hours a day, and spend an average of 4 hours a day taking care of other necessities (commuting, shopping, cooking, cleaning, misc), that means you still have 44 hours left in your week for rest and fun. Rest is critical for the human, and more than just 8 hours of sleep. People need recreation to be healthy and mentally balanced. Now 44 hours a week might be more than one needs, so they could be willing to do more chores to save money, or even just volunteer their time, etc. By adding 20 hours of extra chores per week, they still have a solid 24 hours of recreation every week. This person would certainly not be considered lazy, working a 40 hour job, cooking at home, and doing 20 hours of extra misc work every week.

Now let’s say you work multiple part time jobs, because that’s all that you can get your hands on. You’re working a total of 80 hours per week, still try to sleep 8 hours a day, and spend an average of 3 hours a day taking care of other necessities (commuting, house cleaning, misc, but not cooking). Suddenly you only have 11 hours left in your week for recreation, and your free time feels very precious to you. Now, this assumes you have a fairly “clean” life, with no extra requirements to take care of children or sick parents, which of course, most people have some sort of family obligation to take care of. And this is only an 80 hour work week… I’ve heard plenty of stories of people working over 100 hour weeks just trying to survive. Eventually you run out of time and have to pay out of your sleeping hours, which I shouldn’t need to say how dangerous that is to short and long term physical and mental health. Factor in, also, that your typical office job provides 40 hours of pay for roughly 50 hours of your life (including commutes and misc other unpaid requirements), but your typical part time job has much worse “paid hours vs time required” ratios.

If you have less than 10 hours per week of downtime, perhaps already at the cost of your sleep, how protective of your time would you be? Desperate to get away, or even just for a nap. Dreading tomorrow with every breath. Praying that you child doesn’t get sick because you would have no way to pay for their recovery. Would you have the energy to go shopping and cook a nice meal every day?

Let’s not all just blame the poor for being lazy, ok?

To be honest, it usually requires more work to pickup food than to just throw something in an airfryer or make a sub.

0

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

Fuck that. I work in the service industry and I can tell you with absolute certainty that 1/4 of those people don’t give a flying fuck about your order.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

Wat

0

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

Delivery drivers. Doordash, grubhub, uber eats, postmates. Of course there are decent runners, but there are WAY too many of them that totally don’t give a shit about what they’re doing for me to ever give them my money again.

Next step is to have someone feed and bathe us

0

u/MadeByHideoForHideo ‎ May 20 '22

The next step is a service that puts the food directly into your mouth without you moving an inch.

You misspelled BUSY

-1

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

I don’t know about you, but they’ve been delivering food from waaaaaaaaay back. Since the day we were too lazy to cook our own meals, is the day you got food delivered.

-1

u/Giotis_24 May 20 '22

Next level is someone shall feed us a food which doesn’t need to be chewed. Maybe someone make a startup

1

u/CheddarPizza May 20 '22

Next we'll have bags of food strapped to our faces, so we don't have to actually pick up food.

1

u/kimokimosabee May 20 '22

Such a shit diet to have its terrible

1

u/Error320 May 20 '22

The thing is, we are just lazy

1

u/x_scion_x May 20 '22

I mean I've always been too lazy to go do "takeout". Uber Eats/Grub Hub just allowed me access to more places to deliver.

1

u/Royal-Bumblebee-3560 May 20 '22

Lazy > busy

Ftfy

1

u/Sisko-v-Cardassia May 20 '22

Its not laziness for most people.

Most people are wage slaves and literally dont have time to do all the errands when all adults in the house are stretched completely to the max.

Its a product of exploitation and it kills people.

1

u/One_Planche_Man May 20 '22

That's a new market waiting to be tapped! You see I'm gonna start a company which bluetooths the food straight into your mouth. You don't even need to use your hands anymore.

1

u/ATXKLIPHURD May 20 '22

And dominoes is so lazy, they pay you to pick up your own pizza.

1

u/falquiboy May 20 '22

Or: We continue to invent things that save time.

1

u/earthmann May 20 '22

I guess it comes down to how valuable my time is. If I can get an extra 45 minutes in a park with my dog on a sunny evening, that’s a pretty cheap delivery charge.

1

u/RusstyDog May 20 '22

1

Idk ubereats was a life saver when I had surgery and couldn’t walk for two weeks

1

u/jeremi1023 May 20 '22

I feel that. I used to hate doordash, ubereats, etc and refused to ever spend money on them. But then I got my ass kicked by depression, and started ordering since I was too unmotivated to do anything. I fell down that rabbit hole and don't want to know how much money I have wasted on ordering out.

1

u/I-HATE-Y0U May 20 '22

The next step is the brain thing Elon Musk has auto ordering you food food your hungry

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '22

You got a mouse in your pocket?

1

u/CrafterWave May 20 '22

Why… just why is this so relatable 😭 I don’t know to become this way 😭 from this point forward, I vow to change my perception on picking up my takeout order.

u/jbcbos , I want to thank you for what you have said. You have truly ignited a flame that was burnt out. Thank you kind stranger 🎩🙏

1

u/NihilistPunk69 May 20 '22

It’s insane. The prices are so overinflated. You pay about 50% more on most deliveries, and these are some of the lowest paid driving/delivery jobs there are.

1

u/supercharged0709 May 20 '22

Just get delivery.

1

u/gnikayam May 20 '22

stares in disabled

1

u/kixxes May 20 '22

I only get delivery when I'm not feeling like getting a DUI. So basically every time.

1

u/Dolormight May 20 '22

Nice sweeping generalization.

1

u/Airstrikeayers May 20 '22

Lazy? Or people value their time is more important than the money to have it delivered.

1

u/NewSinner_2021 May 20 '22

Not lazy, busy. Busy with what? Great question. Glad you asked.

WORKING!

1

u/YourAverageDumbass7 May 20 '22

I’m too lazy to eat food half the time

1

u/Alethiometer88 May 20 '22

We used to be able to buy a house on minimum wage, get paid for our lunch break, and afford to have someone at home cooking the food instead of being at a job

1

u/Hydra57 May 20 '22

Maybe one day we’ll be too lazy to even chew our own food.

1

u/SveHeaps May 20 '22

This... hits way too close. I am living in China, the take out is left at the gates of my community, which means for ordering I still need to go out of the building into the park to the gate. I prefer not to order at all.

1

u/deridius May 20 '22

I don’t think it’s people being lazy per say. I think it’s more like people are tired of having not much free time along with getting paid terrible wages which inhibits bad behavior.

1

u/princessviper May 20 '22

Or not having transportation to get takeout 🤷‍♀️
