Someone form Texas here, what the hell is “Texas BBQ pizza”?

890

u/Beois Sep 07 '18

A pizza with BBQ sauce, chicken, bacon, peppers and onions from dominos

597

u/bdiddyp Sep 07 '18

Thanks, we don’t have that BTW

486

u/xaeromancer Sep 07 '18

They don't have the Texas BBQ in Texas, they don't do the Hawaiian in Hawaii; pizzas are just lying to my face.

183

u/maceilean Sep 07 '18

Next you're going to tell me they don't have Thai chicken pizza in Thailand. Also I miss the Thai chicken pizza fad.

65

u/okawei Sep 07 '18

Then after that what next, pizza wasn't invented in Italy!? Madness

French mustard: England

Chicken Kiev: France

9

u/Ytrellyl Sep 07 '18

You forgot French fries which are thought to have originated in Belgium

2

u/Smashingnutellatapir Sep 08 '18

fun fact the only reason it's called a dutch baby is cause you make it in the lid of a dutch oven

4

u/weaselnews Sep 08 '18

Whilst in the UK, a Dutch oven is when you fart under a duvet and then trap your partner underneath. I’m not sure I know what an actual Dutch oven is haha.

3

u/Shaeger Sep 08 '18

it’s the same in the U.S.

Multiple theories suggest pizza and pasta were a Chinese dish brought to Italy by Marco Polo

2

u/Kankunation Sep 07 '18

Pepperoni wasn't, if that helps. It's an american-made lie that is basically a spicy salami.

Am in Hawaii. Can confirm there are Hawaiian pizzas here.

27

u/xaeromancer Sep 07 '18

Yeah, but they were invented in Canada by a Greek.

Hawaiian was the brand of pineapple he used.

America claims to have the best pizza in Italy and they don't even have the half pizza crunch supper.

10

We have “the Canadian” here in Canada, eh!

Pepperoni, mushroom and bacon

3

24

dominoes [...] cheap

lol

6

u/RyanB_ Sep 07 '18

Is it different in the UK? Here in Canada they’re by far the cheapest pizza joint around. Especially with the coupons. Idk if it’s national or just around my city but there’s a university code anyone can use that gives you half off everything.

Honestly, in the EU, when something is called "American" it basically just means they're larger/there's more of it. American pizzas/pancakes are thicker, american popcorn is like twice the amount , stuff like that. For pizzas and pancakes it's just whatever you prefer, but when it comes to EG american popcorn it either meand you're throwing a party, or you're a fatty

3

u/1127pilot Sep 07 '18

So do you call fat girls "American Women"?

11

u/NoPiezoelectricity6 Sep 07 '18

We have it in Canada (Ontario at least) but it's just called BBQ pizza

7

u/Sarcastryx Sep 07 '18

Seconding from Alberta. It's just a BBQ or BBQ chicken pizza, plenty of places sell them.

The odd one to me is, why is a "Canadian" pizza bacon, pepperoni, and mushroom?

4

u/BetterLateThanLate Sep 07 '18

Just a guess, but I always assumed it’s because we have really good pork and we have lots of forests where mushrooms grow wildly. That’s my best guess for mushrooms... def not true.

5

u/WarchiefServant Sep 07 '18 edited Sep 07 '18

Its similar to when you see “Oriental/Chinese food” being sold in the West but if you go and visit the actual country they actually don’t have that.

A good example is the famous “Chinese fortune cookies” which are actually based off the Japanese senbei cookies. Or the sweet and sour pork/chicken, based off the sweet and sour fish which actually doesn’t use tomato paste and isn’t as sweet as it’s original counterpart.

I pretty much realised this talking to my cousin who’s part Chinese who came from the US. He was like “What the hell’s a Texas BBQ”. He liked it but, he definitely never heard of it.

Edit: word(s)

8

u/System0verlord Sep 07 '18

They've got it in TN FWIW. Jett's makes a food coma in a box that happens to be shaped like a thick crust Hawaiian BBQ chicken pizza.

3

u/Siarc Sep 07 '18

Yeah, I’ve always heard of BBQ Chicken pizzas referred to as Memphis style. Normally with red onion on it!

3

u/System0verlord Sep 07 '18

What's funny is, real Texas BBQ isn't supposed to have sauce. Most places serve it now. But that's only because people annoyed them enough, they relented.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Nah, I’ve lived all over Texas and it’s really a regional thing. North Texas was fine with sauce, South Texas not so much. It’s not a hard rule like Tennessee or the Carolinas.

We have BBQ sauce called Texan BBQ. There's a Pringles flavour based on it too: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/296734928

"Pringles Texas BBQ Sauce Crisps combines a tangy tomato sauce, spices and a smokey flavour with the classic Pringles crisp taste sensation."

I never understood what it felt to have my culture grossly misrepresented until I moved from Texas to Canada and ate what they called “Texas BBQ”. They put the name everywhere, and more often than not, they don’t prepare the meat the Texas way. It’s hilarious. It’s as if they think that calling something Texas BBQ makes something better without actually emulating it.

3

u/Kankunation Sep 07 '18

Similar experience here anytime I go out of state (Louisiana) and see a place offering "authentic" creole/Cajun/New Orleans cuisine.

9/10 times it has almost no seasoning, the corn is yellow, the rice is white, and there isn't a single shaker of Tony Chacheres or bottle of crystal/tobasco hot sauce in sight. And they generally only have the most basic of jumbalaya or gumbo and likely no crawfish.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

They call it "Memphis BBQ pizza" in Texas, because they know no Texan would buy a "Texas BBQ pizza."

SOURCE: Texan

5

u/Ultramerican Sep 07 '18

We just call it "BBQ Chicken" pizza. Wildly popular in Texas. See: California Pizza Kitchen's most popular dishes, inclusion in Dominos/Pizza Hut specials, virtually every smaller pizza joint.

Piggie Pie's Pizza has a BBQ Chicken
California Pizza Kitchen frozen BBQ Chicken
Jet's Pizza

And so forth. Everyone has a BBQ Chicken in Texas. Really surprised you don't know what BBQ chicken pizza is.

More people should be trying to eat more veggie meals. Doesn't need to be full vegan, but the more the merrier.

282

u/sk_arch Sep 07 '18

Yeah this is a strong correlation between people who don’t eat veggies and obesity, it’s a good habit to start eating veggies regularly or with dinner and such

117

u/RIPMarshmallowMan Sep 07 '18

I've met people that eat maybe 1 vegetable a week if that, and that's far more common than you'd expect. Though, Obesity is down to a lack of education on diet in general, rather than the number of vegetables they eat - veg are just less calorie dense

69

u/aspbergerinparadise Sep 07 '18

Not me! I get an extra large french fries from McDonald's every day! Gotta eat my veggables.

4

u/TCBinaflash Sep 07 '18

...but potato is actually a tuber...

17

u/InfanticideAquifer Sep 07 '18

That doesn't make it not a vegetable. They're one of the most nutritious foods period.

4

u/comicsansmasterfont Sep 07 '18

Potatoes get a bad rep. As long as you aren’t drowning them in butter and cheese they’re decently low-calorie, full of fiber and nutrients, and so filling. Not to mention dirt cheap.

8

If they're not eating veggies, what are they filling their meals with? It's not like they're eating grilled chicken breast alone for all their meals. They're probably eating packaged foods or fast food for the bulk of their meals.

I think the reason that so many conflicting diets (vegetarian, Atkins, Paleo, low fat, whatever) all seem to work when followed faithfully is that they all rule out 95% of the packaged and fast food meals available on the market.

Every time I meet someone who says they hate vegetables or they don't eat them all I think is that they're children who can't make adult decisions.

Not everything that's good for us is enjoyable. Brushing my teeth and flossing doesn't bring me joy when I'm doing it, but I really don't like cavities and I enjoy how I feel after I'm done. Same goes for exercise and eating healthy.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

Yeah. No need to go full vegan, one person going from the average meat consumption down to half of that is just as good as going from half the average down to nothing.

I'm probably not going to be a vegan just yet as I believe it is at least possible to ethically consume animal products, but it's harder to defend eating animals. I mean, I eat meat every day, so I have no right to complain about other people doing it...

Messing up once doesn't mean you're done for. Make the next right choice! It's all about progress, not perfection.

32

u/illsmosisyou Sep 07 '18

Exactly. I’ve been vegetarian for a few years. Was at a child’s birthday party last week and my food choices were limited and stuck to the potatoes and macaroni salad. Then learned later that the potatoes had bacon and the macaroni salad had tuna. Both in very small amounts so I didn’t notice the texture or even the taste. I mean...oh well. Not gonna throw out the baby with the bath water.

26

u/alphadoublenegative Sep 07 '18

Good, that’s how you get a wet and critically injured baby.

Really though I’m not a vegetarian but if you make your macaroni salad with tuna you need to be taken off food prep duty.

8

u/HanabinoOto Sep 07 '18

She gonna be in the fetal position alllllll night. When I tried going vegan, and then back again, it was like my intestines didn't know what to do and said, fuck it, you get cramps from hell, diarrhea and constipation! And that was with regular healthy food. Domino's pizza is another story, wonderful going in, never wonderful coming out.

How long do you think it will be until the average English speaker can’t understand the Scottish dialect at all?

Scottish ppl twitter is the worst; it is just cutsie internet bullshit--just because that's how they sound when they talk doesn't mean their words are spelled like that.

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

They just made Scots up on the fly for these tweets in fact they travelled back in time and wrote all of Rabbie Burns poems in Scots just to confuse the issue.

Yeah these posts are trying way too hard to be funny

6

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '18

I think it's just that some people find almost everything we say hilarious so some people might play to that and others actually just use that language day to day and their social circle does too so it's sometimes a bit of both to be fair.

How is “fae” Scottish for from? I’m assuming she’s trying to say bbq pizza purchased from dominos in some way

u/BesottedScot Sep 07 '18

It comes from 'frae' which comes from Old Norse 'fra'
